Alliance of the jailbreakers: Cydia acquires Rock

It’s official: the two largest jailbreak app stores for the iOS platform, Cydia and Rock, are getting together.

ModMyi is reporting that Jay Freeman (AKA Saurik) and Mario Ciabarra (AKA psuskeels) have been working through an acquisition of Rock Your Phone, Inc. by SaurikIT, LLC for several months now. That deal became official last night, and over the next 10 days there will be a transition from Rock to Cydia where users can continue to purchase and download apps from the Rock app. After that time, users will need a Cydia store login to continue buying apps. Many of the themes and apps on Rock are already found on Cydia; the remainder will be transferred to Cydia as soon as possible.

According to the post, Ciabarra will continue producing the Intelliborn line of jailbreak apps, which includes such big titles as MyWi, Tlert, MyProfiles, My3G, and Intelliscreen. At a recent “geek lunch” in Denver that Erica Sadun and I attended, Ciabarra noted that Rock Your Phone has been quite successful, with total revenues from startup in March of 2009 accumulating to over US$3 million in August of 2010. Ciabarra’s comments in the post indicate that he prefers doing app development to enhancing platform functionality, so the acquisition will let him get back to doing what he does best and loves the most.

Although the two stores have both had their supporters and detractors, the merging of Cydia and Rock should be a win for the two companies and for the jailbreak community as well.

Namco talks Game Center

It’s funny — right in the middle of all of the fervor during the Game Center launch this week, the first company to the fore didn’t happen to be one of these big new startups that’s making headway in iPhone gaming. It turned out to be Namco, as one of the oldest brands around, Ms. Pac-Man, became the first title on the App Store to support Game Center. Now, of course, there are a few more games that support Apple’s service (and more every day), but Macworld has a great look at what’s coming next from Namco.

Turns out Namco’s planning to go all-in on both iPhone and Game Center — in addition to bringing a sequel to the Time Crisis on-rails shooter, it will bring a hidden object, ghost-catching game called Mishap; Gaijin Games’ great Bit Trip HD (already a hit on Nintendo’s WiiWare); and of course Puzzle Quest 2 very soon. There’s no official release dates or prices yet, but all of those should be out in the next few weeks.

With full Game Center integration, there will be plenty of achievement-chasing and leaderboard competition to be had, no doubt. We’ll look forward to all of those releases soon.

Reminder: Get your free iPhone case by September 30th

Apple’s iPhone 4 case program page reminds you that if you haven’t jumped on the free case they’re offering for the Antennagate issue, you’re running out of time. The free case program will expire on September 30th, so if you haven’t yet, run on over there, download the app to your iPhone, and choose a case for Apple to send off to you.

Or, if you are planning to buy an iPhone 4 but haven’t yet, you might want to jump on it before the month ends — some of the cases can sell for up to $30, so essentially you’re getting a nice discount if it was something you would have bought anyway. There are certainly plenty of other cases to buy, and I’ve been using my iPhone for the past week or so without a case at all and it’s worked just fine, but September 30 is the cutoff, so make a decision by then for sure.

A better question might be when we’re actually going to get the cases ordered from the app — of course it’s going to take a while to ship all of these free cases out to all of Apple’s customers, but at this point I’m wondering how long after the program actually expires before Apple has sent out cases to everyone who applied for one.

Open Source Project For Sophisticated iOS Game User Interfaces

Creating high quality in game user interfaces in OpenGL ES can be a challenge, I’ve even seen things taken so far as to integrate Cocos2D with the SIO2Engine by one developer who was trying to add a sophisticated interface into their game.

A friend of mine pointed out a library that enables the development of user interfaces which has just gone open source, and has also added support for the iOS and MacOSX.  What really makes this library interesting is that it allows you to use HTML/CSS to design your interfaces with a few extras added for real-time interactivity.

The project is known as libRocket and you can visit the homepage with documentation and a support forum here:
http://librocket.com/

The Github project including iOS targets and samples that run on Mac OS X can be found here:
http://github.com/lloydw/libRocket

Overall this looks like an interesting project for those looking to create highly interactive in-game interfaces.

Learning iOS Game Programming Book – Coming Monday

It is difficult to find material that goes through the creation of a game using OpenGL ES and without using a pre-built iPhone game engine.  Some time ago I created a page to promote the excellent iPhone game tutorial from Mike Daley which did just that with some excellent video presentations.  I believe that even if you are using a game engine it makes it so much easier if you already understand the basics.

Since then Mike has taken it a step further and written the Learning iOS Game Programming book for which the hardcover version will be available on Monday, Sept. 13, 2010.  I’ve had access to the rough cut version of this book for some time, and I can tell you that it definitely stands out, and is an excellent step-by-step introduction to game programming on the iOS platform.

In the book you go through the creation of creating a real 2D tile map based dungeon game using OpenGL ES 1.1.  This includes coverage of topics such as particles, audio, high score tables, testing, fonts, rendering, animation and more.

What I really like about the book though isthat while these are all complex topics they are presented in a very accessible way.

You can find the book and do a more thorough search inside it’s contents through the Amazon page (aff).

Something else that Mike is doing that is very cool is that he is promoting his students games on the 71 squared programming blog which you may want to check out.

How to Downgrade iPhone iOS 4.1 to 4.0.1-4.0.2

There is one prerequisite to downgrade your iPhone 4.1. You must have your SHSH blobs saved on Saurik’s servers. If you don’t have your SHSH blobs backed up, then you’re stuck at iOS 4.1. There is absolutely nothing you can do.

Downgrade iOS 4.1 iPhone
Again, this method will help you downgrade your iPhone from iOS 4.1 to any earlier iOS. This will work for the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and iPhone 3G.

There are 2 methods to downgrade your iPhone. I choose to go with what I think is an easier method for those with limited technical skills.

Step 1: First we have to download your SHSH blobs from Saurik’s server to your computer. To do so, download TinyUmbrella and plug your iPhone in.

Step 2: Check the “Advanced Options” box. Under “Device/Version”, select the firmware version to which you wish to downgrade (ie iOS 4.0.1). Finally, select “Cydia” under “Request From”. Then hit “Save My SHSH”. This will grab your SHSH files from Saurik’s servers and save them to your computer.

Step 3: Go to our iPhone Downloads section and download the firmware you want to downgrade to from your iPhone model (ie. iOS 4.0.1 for iPhone 4). Make sure to download this firmware to your computer’s desktop.

Step 4: Put your iPhone in DFU Mode. To do so, launch iTunes and plug your iPhone in. Press and hold the Home and Power button together for 10 seconds. After 10 seconds, release the Power button while still holding the Home button until iTunes pops up and says it has found an iPhone in recovery Mode.

Step 5: Run TinyUmbrella and click the “Display SHSHs” button to make sure your SHSH blobs were downloaded to your computer. Once done, click “Start TSS Server”.

Step 6: The hardest part of the job is done. We are now going to restore your iPhone by downgrading it to the iOS version you want. Launch iTunes and plug your iPhone in. Hold the SHIFT key (Windows only) or ALT/Option key (Mac only) while clicking on Restore. Make sure you hold the key while clicking Restore. A window will open. Simply select the firmware you downloaded in step 3.

Step 7: Your iPhone will be downgraded/restored to the iOS version you chose. iTunes might give you error messages (error 1011, 1013, and 1015). Don’t worry about them.

Step 8: We now need to get your iPhone out of recovery mode. To do so, open TinyUmbrella and click “Kick Device Out of Recovery”.

FIX iPhone Stuck in Constant Reboot After Jailbreak.

Although I can’t and don’t guarantee this will work 100% of the time, if you’ve tried to jailbreak your iPhone and your phone gets stuck at the Apple Logo and reboots every 5-10 minutes, you need to follow these steps:

Setting the iPhone to recovery mode allows you to perform firmware restore using iTunes.

1) Power off the iPhone by depressing both the sleep/wake button on the top of the iPhone and the home button. Wait for the iPhone screen to turn black aka screen-off.

2) Depress the home button and connect the iPhone/iPod sync cable into the docking port on the bottom of the iPhone at the sametime without removing pressure on the home button.

3) You should be able to see the Apple logo coming up on the iPhone and then the recovery screen with be shown after the Apple logo:

4) iTunes will start and inform you that it has detected an iPhone in recovery mode and you should restore your iPhone to start using it.

5) Perform your firmware restore.

6) Exit iTunes and Re-jailbreak.

7) Don’t restore from a backup, just set up your phone as a new phone, then re-sync to add back all your data and apps.

8) DONE!
