Need to optimize existing code.

The code is written in 2006. I need it to be optimized; the code must follow standards of all modern browsers (IE7+, FF.. [no support for IE6 is required]).
The code must be as possible clean.
The other thing to change is to replace the ugly dots, etc with canvas. I am not very well familiarized with how canvas work, though as far as I understand, we can create <canvas> container where we would draw all lines and circles and on top of that put a div that would hold text data, hyperlinks, etc.
