Create a Bulletin Board With Realistic Shadows, Part II – Basix

“Shadows and lights can make or break a composition. Bulletin boards (or corkboards) are popular types of graphics to use in web and print designs but often times they look unrealistic due to the way they are lit and shadowed. In today’s tutorial we will demonstrate how to create a wooden texture and then how to create authentic-looking shadows and light using the still life objects that we will include on our board. Let’s continue this series (or jump over to Part I to get started), and place more elements on our board and finalize this design.”

Client: ”I want a flash on the tub saying 100% free.”

Me: “Err, you can’t say that. That means you’d have to give it away.”

Client: ”Look –  It’s twice the size, so you’re getting 100% free.”

Acc handler: ”No, you see if you say 100% free—”

Client: “--look, I haven’t got time to explain this to you, just put it on.”

Six Things I Think About When I’m Mutating a Rabbit

“Hi, I’m Chris and I’m addicted to creating bizarre characters. I’ve got a real soft spot for strange and surreal beasts, hybridized creatures, and mutated animals. Some people might call what I do “random,” but there’s actually a good deal of thought and sometimes even planning that goes into designing the characters that end up in my artwork. Let’s take a peek inside my twisted character design methodology.”

How to Create a Cubist Masterpiece in Illustrator

“Cubism is one of the most outstanding movements in abstract art. Geometric shapes, vivid colors, simple figures, and textures are all distinctive features of this style. Let’s try to recreate the cubist painting in Illustrator inspired by works of Pablo Picasso – after learning some simple techniques you’ll be able to easily paint your own cubist composition.”

“This session has seen a mix of character illustration articles that cover theory, techniques, and in depth case studies. You’ve learned how to come up with character concepts, develop a character’s backstory, sketch character ideas like a pro, the process of taking that sketch to a final solution, and more. While this session has posted mostly on Vectortuts+, future sessions will post on other Tuts+ sites and across our network. We’ll continue to expand with each session we release.”

Creating Personal Character Designs with Precision

“Designing a character can apply to both personal and professional projects. The character can be a mascot that works in the context of a multi-national brand, or it can simply be inspired by a well-known character within pop culture. The later is usually referred to as “Fan Art.” The character “Mickey Rat” first appeared in the early 1970’s as a subversive underground comic that I enjoyed as a kid. Many artists over the years have taken their own approach with the character, and this article goes over my creation of this vectorized vermin.”
