Large iAds Profit Growth And Top Rankings After Open Sourcing App

I found a very interesting story of how the developer of iStrobe, Nick Vellios, featured on the open source iphone apps list has seen terrific growth in iAds profits (going from $6-$30+ in a day) for a free app.  Even now reaching reaching #25 on the most downloaded utilities list in the app store.

Is open sourcing an app a viable way to promote an app?

Well if you think about it, it could be – see this former post about how Nick was able to reach 1,000 downloads in a day after open sourcing a simple game that had previously only been receiving 40 downloads in a day.

Once an app is open sourced new opportunities for promotion arise, you could put the source code, and link to the app in the app store (developers will want to check out the completed app) on sites like Github, mention it on forums as source code for learning iPhone development, and have it listed in the open source iphone apps listing here on ManiacDev.Com and on other open source apps listings.  You could even write a tutorial about it, and post it around the web.

Anyone reading the tutorial, or thinking about downloading your app would likely download a finished copy of the app.

These extra downloads could mean valuable positions in the app store, and an increase in organic downloads.

If you have a free app, or even a paid app that is not earning you the profits you would like, what do you really have to lose?

You can check out iStrobe in the app store here and you can find the source code here.

Animations In The Sparrow Framework Game Engine Explained

For those that are unfamiliar with the Sparrow Framework, this is the framework used in my iOS programming tutorial on how to create an action game as a beginner.  Designed to be as intuitive as possible, especially for those who have used Flash/Flex I think it’s the easiest open source game framework to get started with.

One of the more complicated aspects of the framework though is handling animations.  The pre-constructed animations built into Sparrow are known as “Tweens” and they are controlled by the “Juggler” (don’t worry if this all sounds odd, once you get into it things become much clearer).

There are 16 of these pre-made animations available, and you can find providing details on the available animations and how to start and stop the animations in a new guide here:
Tweens & Jugglers: Animating Your Stage

I am really a fan of how Sparrow handles animations, and this guide explains things very well.

Open Source iPhone Project Enables Easy Settings View Creation

Users want customization, but adding in those small details like a custom view to modify the settings in a simple app can be a pain, and might not be worth the time to lay out all the interface elements and set everything up.  Apple has stated that they would like us to place these settings in a centralized location, Settings.app, but this can be confusing to many users who look to change settings within the apps and then can’t find them (seems like a small thing, but I know that this does happen often with those new to the iOS platform).

A very useful Open Source project has been released allowing you to create a Settings.bundle, and set up your settings page in Settings.app the way Apple likes it, but it also mimics that same page within your app so now any issues a consumer might have in using your app’s settings are removed.

The project can be found here:
InAppSettingsKit

If you’d like to know more about how to set up your settings  bundle you can check the Apple documentation here:
Settings Application Schema Reference

What I like about this project is that you can set up this page without taking up any extra time, you just set up your Settings.bundle as you normally would, add in the InAppSettingsKit files, and you now have a settings view that can be attached in your app.

Readness: The Social News Service

In this digital age we are used to reading personal statuses from friends whom we are following via several social media mediums, but sometimes we don’t really care if they are eating, on their way to the office, etc. However, we might be interested in the content they read or browse through the web. When you follow friends using social media it is because you share a common interest, thus, you would like to browse suggested content based on their readings. Perfect timing, here is when Readness comes up.

Let’s find out more about privacy and Readness features.

Overview

Readness is a free extension for the Google Chrome browser that allows us to get recommendations about what our friends have read, and also allows us to send suggestions to friends about content based on what we browse the web so far.

This extension is very helpful for discovering new authors and topics based on what you read the most, the install is easy and offers many nice features.

Readness

Overview

Extensions are little apps which you can customize in your browser and add extra features that you like. You just need to visit the extensions gallery from Google Chrome, find one that suit your needs, download it, make a couple of clicks in dialogs, and you are done.

Features

Readness is simple, once you have installed the extension in your browser you will be able to start sharing the content you read. Every time you are reading an article or news story you will see a little disk icon on the top right of your browser’s toolbar, when this icon is blue in color means that the extension is remembering the content you are actually reading; when the icon is faded out (gray color) the article you are reading is not being remembered and the Readness servers won’t record the url in its database. However, what if you don’t want an article to be remembered?

You will have 15 minutes to press “Do not remember Article” before your friends read it.

Readness

Features

Readness only remembers the articles that match with its white list, if any site is black listed and you try to add it, the extension wouldn’t record the url. You are able to consult the sites within the white list in the following link: http://readness.com/sources/whitelist

You are only allowed to add friends from Facebook, once you add them you will be able to see their readings (of course if they are using the extension as well). In fact, you don’t need to register yourself on any Readness form because you log into your profile using your existing Facebook details.

Starring articles is another great feature in this nice extension, the articles you are interested in can be starred, then they are saved in a favorites tabs inside your application profile. When an article is already saved you can read it by yourself going to the History tab within your profile, articles are sortered by the date and time they were saved. When reaching the end of each article you find a slider suggesting you related and popular articles that you might like.

Readness

Features

Readness is more than just reading and getting suggestions, you can find a pretty cool feature called “Quests”; these are challenges to make things in your profile more exciting, you get badges and titles by completing the quests. An example quest might be to research and explore “The Most Useful Mac Tools and Utilities”, then if you read 6 articles about this topic you will earn a new badge or title.

Privacy

Privacy is one the things that really concerns us when we expose our data in Internet. You might be asking yourself how Readness takes care about your privacy?

The first thing we have found is that Readness doesn’t show off your readings to people who are not your friends and they only remember articles from websites than you have read within the white list of news sites.

The app doesn’t remember HTTPS sites, this protocol is ignored by servers, then you can be quiet about secure data being exposed.

privacy

Privacy Features

In addition to privacy, Readness doesn’t share your data with third parties, your details wouldn’t be sold or shared to anyone. Also, you are able to hide your articles from friends by just clicking an icon at the browser’s toolbar.

Social Media

We all are huge fans of Social Media, we are always looking forward to see if our favorites applications are fully integrated with Facebook, Twitter, etc. If you would like to add friends on Readness then you are just allowed to do it through Facebook, also you are just allowed to invite friends from Facebook.

Readness Facebook

Social Media Integration (Facebook)

You would love to set up your Twitter account to connect with Readness events, application offers the possibility to tweet things that are just happening inside your profile like getting new titles, earning new badges or new articles.

Readness Twitter

Social Media Integration (Twitter)

Final Thoughts

Overall, I find Readness is a great social application for those who are interested on reading content in serious environment. Though its interface is simple and clean which is really good because we don’t really need too much advanced features for just reading and sharing articles or content.

I think the application could integrate more social media sites, perhaps this would allows us to find more people to follow and read interesting content from them; in my case I couldn’t find a single contact in Facebook from my friends list using Readness then it would be great trying to find them in Twitter, most of the people who I would like to read content from are at Twitter.

Also, I don’t know how easy is to develop this extension for other browsers, but it would be definitely a nice improvement since Firefox for example is more popular than Google Chrome, which means that Readness could get more users to use the extension.

MindMeister: Collaborative Mind Mapping That’s Free

Imagine it now. You’ve come up with the best idea ever and a great way of executing it but you need somewhere to quickly lay down your ideas. Pen and paper’s fine but what if you need to digitise this and send it to your team later? Why not just kill two birds with one stone?

That’s where MindMeister comes in. It offers a unique way to create digital mind maps through the use of various nodes that comprise your idea. Fast and with a free plan, it’s definitely for you.

Overview

MindMeister is a web app that allows anyone to create their own visual text-based mind maps that can be collaborated on with team members easily. It can become especially useful during the beginning planning process of projects as its nice web interface minimises distraction and maximises productivity.

Overview

Overview

With support for various different external formats and several offline features, it can be a lifesaver when you need to get your projects planned on the go.

Pricing

MindMeister offers the freemium pricing plan so that users can try the app for free with basic features to see if it is right for them before committing. One of the downsides of the basic plan is the limit on the number of mind maps allowed. While the premium plans bother offer an unlimited number of these, it is only possible to create a maximum of 3 with the free plan.

Pricing

Pricing

The paid plans are quite generously priced and come loaded with a few more features than the basic package; including more security, the ability to upload files and images, and it’s even possible to edit your mind maps online.

User-Interface

MindMeister’s interface isn’t particularly special (apart from the actual mind map designer), but I’ve seen a lot worse. The design is quite clean and simple, which is something that you want with an app like this. The less clutter, the less distracted the user is likely to get, thus sometimes decreasing productivity somewhat.

User Interface

User Interface

I’ve found various mind mapping web apps and some of the designs have been hideous. However, this isn’t the case with MindMeister. It isn’t that cluttered but still gives you everything you need to create rich mind maps for your best ideas. And a bonus is that it doesn’t appear to be built with Flash so it could probably be viewed on any platform.

Getting Started

It only takes a few seconds to create your MindMeister account and once you’ve chosen your package and entered a few basic details, you will be sent an email with instructions on activating your account. You are also given a free 30-day trial of the premium account.

Registration

Registration

After activation, you’ll find a nice little welcome page that introduces you to the app and then you are ready to begin.

When you create a basic account, you are also placed on a free 30-day trial of MindMeister. On this page you may also find a promotion that allows you 10% off the MindMeister PRO license providing you upgrade within the first 30 days.

Creating Mind Maps

It’s a really simple process to create mind maps using MindMeister. From the main dashboard, you can choose the “New Mind Map” option to create a fresh node from scratch or you can import a pre-existing one from many popular formats or even from plain (indented where appropriate) text. You will then be taken to the Mind Map designer.

Importing a Mind Map

Importing a Mind Map

Creating a Mind Map

Creating a Mind Map

Each map comprises several nodes that can be connected to show important relationships between each idea. Child nodes can be collapsed to save room and then expanded when it is necessary to examine the contents. To add text to a node, simply click it and you will be able to create and format the text. There is plenty of room to add hundreds of nodes and as far as I’m aware, there doesn’t appear to be a limit. Once you’re done, you can close the map to save it or choose an export option.

Offline Mode

With MindMeister, your location need not be an issue. Whether you’re traveling and have no internet connection or you’d simply rather work without a connection to minimise distraction, there’s a handy offline feature for that.

Offline Mode

Offline Mode

Using Google Gears offline technology, you can access and edit your mind maps when you’re away from home. It’s also a possibility to export your mind map in the format of another mind mapping desktop application so you can use that to edit and import it back into MindMeister when you’re done.

Sharing

With the flick of a switch (or rather a button), you can make your mind map public so everyone can access your brilliant ideas. This could come in handy if you’re working on a project and have a blog and would love to keep your fans updated. You can simply embed the mind map into your website and instantly inform your viewers of the progress.

Browsing Public Maps

Service Integration

Another nice little feature is the ability to link your account with your Twitter profile and perform various actions through the new capability provided in the link. One example of this is that when you publish a new mind map, you can also broadcast an update to your followers to inform them of this.

Twitter Integration

Twitter Integration

It’s also possible to take advantage of Twitter’s direct messaging feature to aid you in a couple of things. You will be able to set up notifications so that whenever a mind map you are a part of is updated, you instantly receive either an email or a direct message through Twitter. One action I’m particularly intrigued by is where you can send direct messages to MindMeister’s official Twitter account when you have a sudden idea and they will be added as nodes in your default map. This is great for those who have ideas when they’re out and about, but by the time they get home, they’re already forgotten.

Final Thoughts

When you’re looking to ditch traditional paper-based mind maps where your team sits around a table and comes up with ideas, MindMeister is definitely the next best thing. For a start, a whole team can collaborate without having to be in the same room at the same time – which can prove to be really useful if you’re experiencing scheduling issues and need a permanent fix.

Overall, the app brings just about everything you’d expect to be delivered in app like this and a bit more. Some of the innovative features, such as the Twitter account linking, really make it unique. I can’t really find much to fault, which is a good sign, and I’d definitely recommend the app if you’re looking for a cheap solution to your productivity needs.

iMockups: Easily Sketch Mockups On-The-Go

All designers among us have most likely been in this situation: you’re on the road, but you don’t carry a paper and pen with you when an idea strikes. Or a customer needs a basic layout mailed, but you can’t get that piece of paper into his virtual inbox.

With iMockups for the iPad, moments like these are a thing of the past. Now you can create incredible mockups quickly and easily – and in the next release even post process and share them with other iMockups users!

Target Audience

iMockups is geared mainly towards web designers who need to visualize an idea quickly, either for themselves or for a client. The app offers a wide range of elements used in layouts (image, video & text placeholders, containers to block space, lines to separate content etc).

It now also offers GUI elements used for interface design, specifically the iPhone and iPad. It’s less geared towards visual app development, but more towards how a website could look on the mobile device.

Getting Started

When first loading iMockups, the app doesn’t look like much. Only after creating a new project will you see where the magic happens. The canvas in the middle is framed by the project view on the left where you can see all the pages associated with a project (eg. Home, Services, Portfolio, Contact) and the tools palette on the right.

In the current version the tools for web, iPhone and markup are handily divided into separate sliders, making it much easier to find what you’re looking for.

Canvas, project pane and tool palettes

Canvas, project pane and tool palettes

Before you start your mockup, spend a second to decide whether you want your content to be distributed mainly horizontally or vertically on your website. You can easily adjust the size and orientation of the canvas by tapping the respective preview page on the left pane and then choosing canvas size. You can choose from three templates (small, medium, large) or set your own size.

Setting up your canvas size and orientation

Starting on a Blank Screen

Now that you’ve set up your project, you simply start by dragging and dropping elements (tools) from the right onto your canvas or by tapping them once in the tools palette. By tapping and holding an element on the canvas you can move it around.

Conveniently, iMockups presents you with orange guides that pop up when elements align (and for some reason they are impossible to capture in a screenshot). Sometimes it can get a bit tricky to place an element just right. That’s where the inspector comes in: double tap an element and then use the X/Y coordinates for placement or the W/H (width/height) fields for adjusting size.

Using the inspector for fine tuning

You need to use two fingers to move the canvas. Using one finger will move only the element that was selected last.

Ease of Use

In case you need to select multiple elements, for example to group them, just tap and hold down two fingers until a blue area appear between your fingertips. By moving your fingers around, you can adjust the size of the area and which elements it includes.

That way you can easily group elements that belong together. That comes in very handy when you need to move a group of elements around or if you want to replicate them quickly. Once you find the perfect spot for an element, lock it, thereby avoiding moving it accidentally.

Quick commands

Quick commands

There are also a number of other commands easily accessible by tapping on an element. One of the best time savers is the clone command which replicates an element instantly. If you copy an element, you can paste it onto a different page, which is especially helpful if there are design elements which repeat on multiple pages.

Another time saver is the built-in “lorem ipsum” generator. Most designers will rely on filler text to test layouts, and it’s incredibly helpful to have it in iMockups. It takes a couple of tries to figure out what the difference between the text options is, but once you’ve mastered them, you can quickly create headings and paragraphs to fill your layout.

Headings do not have line breaks while paragraphs do; lorem ipsum is pre-made text which expands when the containing field is enlarged, but you can’t change any of the text; links are the only underlined text.

Importing Images

A new feature to iMockup is the ability to import images into your designs. I use this feature in one of two ways. On the one hand, some images in a layout can help the client to better understand what you are trying to show. In my experience, clients can rarely think in the abstract shapes we designers can and have trouble to visualize the final look.

On the other hand, you can also use a screenshot as a blueprint for a layout (if you want to analyze the elements used or build on top of an existing site). Unfortunately, iMockup can’t properly scale images up to their original size during import (they start to pixel), but it’s ok for basic guidelines.

Once You’re Done

After having created your mockup, you can admire it full screen by making both the right and left pane disappear. If you’re satisfied with your work, you can choose between two export options: export page or export project.

Both options give you the choice of either saving your layout as an image to your photo gallery or emailing a PNG. The difference with exporting a project is that it automatically saves all the different pages without forcing you to do so manually.

Verdict

iMockups is an incredibly useful tool for people who often need to layout web sites and share their mockups. It is easy to use once some of the app’s peculiarities are understood, and there’s always the help section to guide you.

The developers are very active and responsive to the community of users, pushing out regular updates and implementing requested features like the ability to import photos. The next release will feature even more icons (shapes like arrows, stars, etc) to give diversity to layouts, and it will enable you to share your mockups among other iMockups users and edit them.

Overall, the app delivers great value for the price!

6 Rules for Asking Great Interview Questions

Conducting interviews with experts is one of the best ways to create quality online content that’s highly profitable. But once you get an expert on the phone (or face-to-face), it’s crucial that you know how to ask great questions that will bring out the best answers possible. Otherwise your guest will go into “speaker mode,” just regurgitating what she’s said thousands of times before — that is, if you’re lucky.

You also might end up with sub-par content, because the interviewee is only answering your questions instead of volunteering more information.

In any case, you won’t be inspiring your expert’s imagination, or revealing anything that people can’t get in his latest book. That will likely result in a higher proportion of refunds from people who buy your product because they like that expert, and want something new.

A poorly-conducted interview will also make your guest reluctant to recommend you to any of her peers, or provide a testimonial, so you’ll have to work harder to convince the next person to be interviewed.

Luckily, by following a few simple rules, you can make sure that you get the best content out of your interview. That in turn leads to more expert interviews, more sales, and fewer refunds.

Here are my 6 Rules for Asking Great Interview Questions:

1. Don’t Ask Limiting Questions

Beginning interviewers almost always seem to fall back on asking limiting questions, which take the form of a multiple choice (either/or) or closed-ended (yes/no) question. These encourage your guest to give short answers, and to focus simply on the parameters you’ve set rather than thinking “outside the box” of your question.

As a result, he’ll feel stifled, or that you’re on a cold fact-finding mission instead of in an engaging discussion. The content will suffer, and so will your profitability.

To avoid limiting questions, make sure the first word out of your mouth is not Is, Are, Were, Do, or Does.

2. Ask Open-Ended Questions

When you avoid limiting questions, you’ll be able to ask the best types of questions: open-ended. These inspire your guests to think and use their imaginations, which result in unique, thoughtful answers that are chock-full of valuable information.

The easiest way to know that your questions are open-ended is to start them with Who, What, Where, When, Why, or How.

3. Don’t Ask Loaded Questions

Another common mistake is putting too much into a question, resulting in an overloaded, long-winded, or double-barreled question. If you do that, your guests will be forced to put less into their answers.

To avoid loaded questions, make sure you only ask one thing at a time, and don’t tack on rambling information or commentary before or after you ask the question.

4. Ask Simple Questions

When your questions aren’t loaded, they can be simple. And you know what they say: KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid… or, if you prefer, Keep It Short and Simple).

Remember, an interview isn’t about you showing off how much you know; it’s about inspiring your guest to reveal how much they know, so your audience can benefit.

5. Don’t Ask Leading Questions

Leading questions are those that try to get someone to give a specific answer rather than the true answer. They’re manipulative, and they greatly impact your ability to uncover gold in an interview.

If you find yourself making assumptions, trying to get a guest to agree with your opinion or observation, or using emotionally-charged words that are biased or could trigger a reaction, then you’re asking a leading question. There’s nothing wrong with an interview that’s full of emotion, but it should come from the thoughtful answers, not from a poorly-worded question.

6. Ask Neutral Questions

When you avoid leading questions, you can ask neutral questions instead. There will be times when you can express your opinion, or ask about something you’ve noticed — even something that doesn’t necessarily agree with what your guest has just said — but it shouldn’t take the forefront.

Remember, the person in the spotlight is your guest, not you. Let his personality and knowledge shine, and not only will he want to share more, but you’ll be creating a compelling and attractive piece for your audience.

Summary

In case you’re wondering, yes, I do break all these rules sometimes in my interviews. However, after asking questions for years to hundreds of interviewees, I know when I’m doing it, and it’s always for a specific reason.

If you’re just starting out, it’s all too easy to break the rules, and many beginners do so on almost every question without even realizing it. That’s why I recommend you follow these rules as closely as possible at all times until they become the new habit; this will give your interviews better, higher-quality content right away, and you’ll see your bottom line increase as a result.

Using WordPress for Project Bidding with WPBids

Your project bid can make or break your chances when it comes to landing a particular client. However, investing too much time in a project bid doesn’t make good business sense: you don’t get paid for the time that goes into creating your proposal. So any tool that can streamline the proposal process and help you turn out a high-quality proposal is worthwhile. And if it’s built on a system that you may already be familiar with — like WordPress — that’s even better.

WPBids is exactly that: a specialized WordPress theme that generates a clean proposal. You don’t have to learn any new software or even build templates of your own, although WPBids has many customization options. All you have to do is add the information for your current project, publish it, and send your prospective client the URL.

Managing the Proposal Process

WordPress offers several benefits for managing the proposal process that may not be obvious. More often than not, proposals these days are handled online. You may be used to emailing PDFs, but offering your client the ability to easily look over a proposal on a web page and comment right there is convenient. It’s also a far easier format to work with if your client depends on a mobile browser for handling email and other communication. And if you’re presenting your proposal in person, you only have to worry about internet access — not having all the necessary files.

Hopefully, you need to manage multiple proposals at the same time. WPBids creates a home page for your proposals, so you can take a look at everything you have on your hands at the moment. Because you’ll likely build up an archive of older proposals, you can sort by the date, client name, and other criteria, so you can quickly find old proposals.

One of the major concerns with putting proposals online is how secure they are, both from your competition and your other clients. WPBids has built in the ability to password protect bids. You also have the ability to print out a version of each bid formatted for the printer if you come across a client who wants you to mail or fax a proposal.

Taking Your Proposals to the Next Level

The truth of the matter is that most proposals are built off of templates: no matter what sort of services you provide to clients, there are many similarities between what you’ll do for a client tomorrow and what you’ll offer next week. That means that you can rely on a template that you simply customize to each prospective client. WPBids makes it easy to turn an existing proposal into a template that you can rely on. It’s also very easy to go back and edit an existing template — as easy as editing a post in WordPress.

Within WPBids’ tools, you have many options for customization. The theme comes with four different color options for your proposals. But modifying WPBids beyond a simple color change is easy. By using WordPress’ built-in ability to use child themes, you can quickly roll out even more customized versions. With WPBids comes the Photoshop PSD originally used to build it, so that you can modify the graphics in the design quickly. The developers even include a stripped down child theme so that, if you’re inclined, you can recreate the theme in your own style.

Making Use of WPBids

To use WPBids, you do have to have your own domain name and hosting — but if you have an existing domain name, you certainly won’t need to buy another just to run WPBids.

WPBids is available for $59. For that price, you can use it as many times as you like, on as many different domains as you need to. And if proposals are important to your business, that’s a bargain.
