Cosmic Bump
Another fine physics puzzler, Cosmic Bump combines a familiar flinging mechanic with traditional pinball action in a satisfying blend.
Your goal is to collect alien fuel cells to help restart your crashed saucer, and the levels typically require a smart combination between alien flinging and pinball finesse to achieve the 3-star scores. The game covers six chapters, meaning there’s a lot of ground to cover and many different puzzle arrangements to decipher.
A universal build, Cosmic Bump’s fine physics and simple controls make it an ideal candidate for its genre, and the lack of IAP in the game is a breath of fresh air, allowing you to buy once and focus on playing instead of paying.
Apocalypse Max: Better Dead Than Undead
Probably among the top 5 finest side-scrolling shooters on the App Store, Wandake’s Apocalypse Max: Better Dead Than Undead, packs fun, speed and mind-blowing visuals into a tightly tuned package.
Hellthroat Island needs a new name. It also needs someone to rid it of its zombie infestation, and you — Max, lone survivor — are totally up for the job. The game’s levels are diverse, colourful and extremely vibrant, with the hand-drawn artwork helping to bring to life an extremely rich gameworld. An action game is only as good as its gameplay though, which is why it’s so awesome to be able to say that Apocalypse Max succeeds here too. Gunplay feels satisfying, and the variety of weapons includes blades and explosives and makes for a tremendous anti-undead arsenal.
The cringe-worthy presence of IAP are the only thing holding this fantastic shooter back from perfection. It is a true refinement of its genre and a testament to the quality that we continue to expect in iOS games.
Soldier vs. Aliens
Bulkypix, a well known iOS developer, recently put out another freebie in the form of Solider vs. Aliens.
This game could be easily described as every hallway scene from the Alien series of films condensed into a very focused game about holding off an encroaching horde of aliens. In a hallway. You have the freedom to move your lone soldier up or down vertically along the left edge of the screen as you blast away at the oncoming nasties. Weapons and armour can be upgraded — via IAP if you’re inclined — and while there is some loose structure to the levels, the basic gameplay remains consistent: strafe vertically and obliterate aliens.
Paying tribute to many sci-fi inspirations, Soldier vs. Aliens is a streamlined action game that seeks to do one thing and one thing only: portray the blasting of aliens as well as possible. And sometimes, that’s all you’re really after for a quick gaming session.
My Singing Monsters
If you’re like me, you’ll have started chuckling as soon as you saw My Singing Monsters’ dorky icon, and the laughter continues as you begin to play the game, finding yourself quickly drawn in by the wacky game.
If you imagine a sort of Jurassic Park for falsetto Pokémon fuzzballs, you’ll have a basic idea of what My Singing Monsters is like. Instead of a typical monster collecting game where the monsters only interact with the world around them and each other via some sort of conflict, these little fellows interact by singing. Their unique voices combine to form interesting and surprisingly full pieces of music as you collect more to dwell on your island.
The game offers more depth in the form of landscape elements that can be placed, along with decorations and the ability to feed and play with the individual monsters to keep them happy. My Singing Monsters is entirely unique, amazingly funny and hopelessly charming.

The Last Driver
You think your day was bad? Imagine a day where a nuclear holocaust, a zombie apocalypse and an alien invasion all happen together. That, my friends, is the world of The Last Driver.
An endless runner at heart, you control an upgradeable vehicle across the wasteland of old cities and shattered countrysides. Besides shooting and squishing zombies that stand in your way, you’ll have to dodge obstacles, avoid dinosaurs (oh yeah, there’s dinosaurs in this apocalypse too) and fend off aliens. In short, it’s pretty ridiculous, and offers quite a bit of challenge by combining such a variety of hazards.
Free with IAP, The Last Driver is a manic and entertaining vision of the apocalypse.
