RedSn0w 0.9.6b4 is capable of jailbreaking all iDevices on iOS 4.2.1 however, newer devices are tethered jailbreak only. A tethered jailbreak means that each time your device loses battery power or needs to be rebooted, you must attach it to a PC or Mac to boot into the jailbroken state.

Untethered Jailbreak: iPhone 3GS (old bootrom), iPhone 3G, iPod touch 2G (Non-MC)

Step 1

Connect your iDevice to the iTunes 10.1 and restore iOS 4.2.1.
ATTENTION iPhone Users: iOS 4.2.1 will update your baseband which is not unlockable ATM.

Step 3

Once your iPhone / iPod Touch / iPad is running iOS 4.2.1, execute the downloaded RedSn0w 0.9.6b4.

Step 4

Hit the Browse button and select the downloaded iOS 4.2.1 firmware. RedSn0w will recognize the firmware, now hit the Next button.

Now select your desired options. Make sure that atleast Install Cydia is selected. Now hit Next button.

Step 6

RedSn0w will ask you to turn off your device. When it’s off and plugged in, hit the next button.

Jailbreak iPhone 3G iOS 4.0.2 with RedSn0w

Step 1

Download the the required stuff linked at the bottom. Download both the firmware 4.0 and 4.0.2.

Step 2

Restore iOS 4.0.2 on your iPhone 3G. you need iTunes 9.2.1 to do that. (Links below)

Step 3

  1. Run the downloaded redsn0w 0.9.5 beta.
  2. Hit the Browser button. Select the iOS 4.0 IPSW file. (Yes iOS 4.0 NOT 4.0.1, that’s the tricky part)
  3. Check mark Cydia and hit next button.
  4. Check mark Enable Multitasking and Wallpaper (uncheck if you don’t want to enable these options because these slow down the iPhone)
  5. You’ll be instructed to put your iPhone into DFU Mode to install jailbreak.
  6. When your iPhone 3G comes back up, you’ll notice Cydia has a blank white icon. Allow Cydia to reorganize, then accept the update it offers. When Cydia restarts, you should see its real logo now.

that’s it. You’ve successfully jailbroken iPhone 3G iOS 4.0.2 firmware with RedSn0w.
