Joomla Template Design & Banner Design

I am upgrading from Mambo to Joomla 1.5 and am looking to redesign the template.

I’m after a crisp fresh design, use the attached image as a guide, I’m no expert so please ask any questions you may have.

I also need a new banner, that will fit in with the template design to go across the top, feel free to use your design flair, as I have none! You can see the existing banner at the top of www.avprojectorlamps.com. The Main products we sell are Projector Lamps, Projectors and Projector Mounts, feel free to add images to the banner if you think it requires it. I would like my logo included (top left of existing banner).

I would be open to suggestions and happy to see any examples/mock ups you may want to show me.

Thanks

Unlock iOS 4.2.1 on iPhone 3G/3GS with Ultrasn0w 1.2

iPhone Dev Team has just released a new version of Ultrasnow to unlock iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS, still there is no news about iphone 4 user and its looks like that they have to wait for some more times. If you are using iPhone 4 and using ultrasn0w for unlock then you should just stay away from iOS 4.2.1 update from iTunes because this version of ultrsn0w will not unlock iPhone 4?s baseband.

Here are the complete instructions posted by iPhone Dev Team:
Today we’re pleased to announce our free carrier unlock for iPhone3G/3GS owners with a baseband later than 05.13.04. The unlock for that baseband exploited the AT+XAPP command, thanks to a crash initially discovered by @sherif_hashim (@Oranav also found this crash). So what hole are we exploiting today, since Apple closed that AT+XAPP hole? Well, we’re exploiting the exact same hole!
It turns out that the very first iPad firmware 3.2.2 has baseband version 06.15.00 still vulnerable to AT+XAPP. The iPad baseband is built for the exact same baseband chip as the iPhone3G/3GS — they’re fully compatible! Some of us have been running 06.15 for weeks now on our iPhones in preparation for this release.
Since 06.15 is a higher version than 05.14 or 05.15 (where AT+XAPP is gone), anyone stuck at those versions can simply upgrade to 06.15 to unlock again! Luckily for us, Apple *still* provides the iPad FW 3.2.2 with this vulnerable baseband right from their own servers. (Grab it now, before they take it down!)
We’ve been busy updating both PwnageTool and redsn0w to make the baseband update as seamless as possible.
1. First up is “PwnageTool 4.1.3 Unlock Edition”. It has a special dialog box which will ask you if you want to update to the iPad baseband. You must already have the iPad 3.2.2 IPSW on your computer (see the above link)….so just point PwnageTool at it (or let it find it on its own if you’re in “simple” mode).
2. Directly after PwnageTool 4.1.3 is available, the official ultrasn0w repo http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com will be updated with ultrasn0w 1.2, which covers iPhone 4 baseband 01.59.00 and iPhone 3G/3GS basebands 04.26.08, 05.11.07, 05.12.01, 05.13.04 and now 06.15.00.
3. Finally, we’ll release an update to redsn0w today for those without Macs and can’t run PwnageTool. The new redsn0w will give you the option to update your baseband to 06.15 too.
WARNING — YOU DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK! PLEASE UNDERSTAND THE CONSEQUENCES OF UPDATING TO 06.15.
1. There is no way to come back down from 06.15, and there’s no hiding the baseband version from Apple. You’ll be voiding your warranty in a very obvious way.
2. If some future baseband comes out with a critical fix, you won’t be able to update to it if it remains down in the 05.xx sequence (then again, you wouldn’t update to it if you wanted to keep your unlock anyway).
3. Starting with FW 4.2.1 if you have 06.15 on your iPhone you won’t ever be able to restore to stock firmware (it will fail). You’ll need to only restore to custom IPSWs (then again, if you’re unlocker you should already be doing that).
Certainly don’t update to 06.15 if you don’t need to! Only do this if you need the unlock and you’re stuck on 05.14 or 05.15, and you’re willing to assume the above risks.
This PwnageTool also contains a 4.2.1 bundle for iPhone3G owners…for all else, it’s still only 4.1. If you have an iPhone3GS with an old bootrom, the new redsn0w will handle 4.2.1 for you (in fact it covers 4.2.1 for all devices, even though some of them are still tethered at 4.2.1 until @comex can work some untethering magic). iPhone3GS users with old bootroms who want to go to 4.2.1 should not use this PwnageTool! Update to stock 4.2.1 first, then use the upcoming redsn0w to update your baseband.
Please feel free to use our comments section for questions. We have some very knowledgeable and helpful moderators: angiepangie, Confucious, dhlizard, and Frank55!

Intelligently Browse RSS Feeds With NewsBlur

Are you overwhelmed with all the feeds you’ve subscribed to in your favorite RSS app such as Google Reader? Need a better way to keep up with the news and updates that are most important to you? There’s not enough time in the day to read all the new articles that are published across the net, but it can be hard to sort out the great from the forgettable articles.

Most RSS feed readers work just like an email subscription, and all new posts will automatically show up in your unread list. Today we’re going to look at NewsBlur, a new feed reader webapp that brings an intelligent approach to RSS feeds. It automatically shows the articles you’ll be interest in based on articles you’ve previously liked, and makes it easy to browse the original site or the RSS feed itself.

Getting Started

Similar to Google Reader and other feed apps, NewsBlur lists feeds in folders on the left, and then displays the feed contents in the main content section of the page. Just browse to their site and you can automatically try it out without creating an account, simply by browsing the feeds that are already added to NewsBlur. This is a great way to get a feel for the interface before taking the time to create an account and add your own feeds. You can also install it as a webapp in Chrome directly if you wish.

Try NewsBlur out without signing up

Try NewsBlur out without signing up

Once you’re ready to signup, click the top black bar on the left to get back to the main screen. Here you can get more info about the app or signup for your own account. You don’t need to enter much info; just import your Google Reader account or add a new username and optionally add a password. One click later, you’ll be ready to start managing your own feeds with NewsBlur.

Signup directly with your Google account, or enter a new username

Signup directly with your Google account, or enter a new username

Using NewsBlur

Your new account will be sparse at first, but not for long. If you signed in with your Google Account, you’ll be prompted to select the feeds you want to keep; otherwise, you’ll have no feeds by default. Just click the green plus in the bottom left to start adding feeds.

NewsBlur helps you get started with info bubbles

NewsBlur helps you get started with info bubbles

Here you can add a feed from a URL or RSS feed directly, import your Google Reader account or add new folders to keep you feeds organized. Alternately, if you’ve been using a desktop RSS program such as NetNewsWire or FeedDemon, you can import your feeds from an OPML file. Check your current RSS app’s help if you’re unsure about how to export the OPML file.

Add feeds directly, or import from Google Reader or an OPML file

Free NewsBlur accounts let you add up to 64 feeds, so if your Google Reader account or OPML file included more feeds you’ll need to select some feeds to disable. NewsBlur will automatically select the feeds in your list that are most popular, but you can adjust it as you want. Alternately, for $12 per year you can upgrade to a Premium account which lets you add unlimited feeds and access premium features when they’re added.

Training NewsBlur

Now that you’ve added your feeds, you could just start using NewsBlur, but that’d take away the best part. NewsBlur can automatically highlight the posts in your feeds that you’re most likely to find interesting, but you’ll have to train it to know what you like first. To do this, click the Launch Intelligent Trainer button on your NewsBlur dashboard after importing your feeds. This will present a page for each of your feeds, listing the top authors and tags on the site.

Teach NewsBlur what you're interested in

See if you'll like articles before you read a feed

See if you'll like articles before you read a feed

You’ll need to do this for each feed, but once you’ve done it, you’ll find your RSS experience much more personalized and less time consuming. Articles NewsBlur thinks you’ll like based on info you’ve added will be listed in green, while unrated articles will be yellow and red articles cover topics you’ve downvoted in the past.

Read Feeds the Way You Like

While Google Reader and other RSS apps usually only let you read feeds in RSS view, NewsBlur includes a unique interface that shows the original site with the RSS feed listed underneath. This way you can still take advantage of each site’s unique design with the convenience of seeing which articles you haven’t read yet. It’s also nice for reading sites that include a truncated RSS feed without the full article content.

Alternately, you can view articles in a traditional feed mode. Here NewsBlur’s design shines with a clean, elegant interface that makes articles nice to read.

Like or Dislike Articles

You can keep training NewsBlur as you read articles so it’ll get better at knowing what feeds you like. If you like or dislike an article, click the thumb symbol on the left of the feed name. Alternately, if you just want to save the article to read later, click the star and you’ll be able to quickly find it in the Saved Stories entry on the top of the feed list.

Like or save articles to keep training NewsBlur and make it easier to use

If you pressed the thumb icon, you can now mark what you liked or disliked about an article. NewsBlur will use this info to keep your feeds focused on what you want to read. Over time, you should find yourself able to quickly read the news most important to you and let NewsBlur help you ignore the rest.

Or, if you’d like to read something out of your ordinary readings, you can always turn down NewsBlur’s filtering to let you see articles you otherwise might miss. Your choice!

Conclusion

While many people have switched to only reading links shared on networks such as Twitter or Facebook, NewsBlur shows how you can have a curated and personalized news experience from the sites you love. It does a great job surfacing the articles you’ll find most interesting, and seemed to run faster than Google Reader. At the very least, you should spend less time using it since you’ll only see the most important items.

You also have much more control over your experience than you do in Google Reader, and can even run it on your own server if you wish as NewsBlur is fully open source and can be downloaded from GitHub.

Do you use Google Reader, NewsBlur, or another RSS reader app? We’d love to hear what you’re using, so let us know in the comments. While you’re at it, don’t forget to give NewsBlur a try!

10 Great Chrome Web Apps Built For Chrome

By now I’m sure you’ve heard of Google’s new Chrome Web Store and some of the great apps you can find there. What you might not have heard or found out for yourself yet is that many of the apps in the Web Store are actually just links to existing web apps. Lots of people were expecting more apps to be optimized to take advantage of Chrome’s capabilities, and they’re not.

We’ve dug through the Chrome Web Store to find 10 really great Chrome apps that aren’t just links to existing apps, they’re either specifically a Chrome app or optimized for Chrome. Take a look and let us know what you’ve found.

Are They Really Chrome Apps?

While some of these apps certainly are Chrome apps, which require Chrome to work, several of them are simply highly optimized web apps that take advantage of Chrome’s new web capabilities (HTML5, etc). Some of the apps that are optimized for Chrome will actually work in Safari as well, which is actually pretty nice.

The most common complaint I see on the Chrome Web Store is that most apps are simply bookmarks for exisiting web apps, which is disappointing for many. The following list of apps aren’t app bookmarks and I’ve tried each one (some for longer than I should have, but you know how that goes).

Using and Managing Apps From the Chrome Web Store

If you’re new to the Chrome Web Store and installing Chrome apps, be sure to give our how-to covering installing, tweaking and managing Chrome apps.

TweetDeck

TweetDeck

TweetDeck

TweetDeck is one of the most popular Chrome apps available at the moment and rightly so—they actually built the app like it should’ve been built for Chrome, unlike so many other apps. The app brings the greatness of TweetDeck into the browser with real-time streaming, a simplified interface and multiple social network support.

NYTimes

NYTimes

NYTimes

With the NYTimes app, you’ll be able to read your news and enjoy the minimalistic interface it offers. Your able to customize the look and feel to fit your taste and if you loose your internet connection, don’t worry, you’ll be able to continue reading offline. You’ll also get breaking news alerts in-app so you won’t miss a beat. Although it’s optimized for Chrome, you can also use it in Safari.

Sports Illustrated Snapshot

Sports Illustrated Snapshot

Sports Illustrated Snapshot

This is a neat app for some visual good-ness offering ten great photos from the sports world, all selected by Sports Illustrated editors and published every morning. It doesn’t stop there though, you can get sports scores, access your SI account and get in-app extras (for a price). It works great but the interface isn’t quite as fluid as I’d expect—nonetheless a great app.

Stickies

Stickies

Stickies

It’s simple, but useful. Stickies, just like it’s name suggests, lets you keep a “board” of sticky notes in four different colors. It’s lacking in features at the moment but Google Tasks integration is on the way and, hopefully, other methods of note syncing.

Super Mario Bros

Super Mario Bros

Super Mario Bros

Does it get much better than Super Mario Bros? Classic gaming meets advanced web (sort of). It’s a fun little addition to Chrome for taking a break from work or to get your Super Mario Bros fill. The developer also offers another fun game, Canabalt, where your character tries to escape a crumbling city. Simple, but fun!

HuffingtonPost NewsGlide

HuffingtonPost NewsGlide

HuffingtonPost NewsGlide

If you’re a Huffington Post reader, you’ll want to snag this app. In fact, I’d recommend giving this app a try whether you’re a HP reader or not. It’s still in Beta, but it’s a great example of the kind of interfaces we have on the way (similar to what you’d find on the iPad). The app needs more work, however, before it’s navigation will be as fluid as it should be.

NPR

NPR

NPR

Another app for news, NPR rocks a sexy sliding interface that looks a lot like an iPad web app made for the desktop. The app lets you easily create a playlist of NPR audio, even while reading stories and supports offline reading. Although it’s optimized for Chrome, it seems to function great in Safari as well. In fact, it’s far smoother operating in Safari than in Chrome! (Uh… Google?)

Amazon Windowshop

Although it’s Flash based, Amazon Windowshop is definitely an app you should try if you’re an Amazon.com shopper. The app is smooth to navigate around but probably won’t be your choice method for finding things to buy on Amazon, although it is nice just for browsing around (aka. window shopping).

You can also add multiple locations so they’re only a click away.

The Fancy Pants Adventure: World 2

At first glance I thought this was just another silly attempt at a fun game, but I discovered it was strangely addicting. It’s developed by EA2D and is also being developed for the Xbox and Playstation. If you want to take a break from work, definitely give this game a try.
