The result of this tutorial will be a product design catalogue that contains multiple master pages templates to easily incorporate your images.

Tips for Catalogue Design Templates

Designing a product catalogue template can get complicated if it’s your first time. There are tips and tricks that can save you time and that will allow you to edit your product catalogue template easily and fast. Here are a few things to consider when you create a product catalogue:

  1. Set up Master Pages: these pages are non-printing pages that you can use as templates to make your product catalogue design. You can design several of these templates and mix and match your final publication.
  2. Edit your images to look the same: make sure all of the images on your catalogue have the same editing style to create a cohesive look.
  3. Apply standard page numbers: use Master Pages to set up automatic page numbers that can change as you add extra pages to your design.
  4. If printed, make the number of pages divisible by four: publications can only be printed if the final page count is divisible by four. That’s because there are four pages in a spread.
  5. Set up Bleeds: if you’re planning on printing a product catalogue template with images that extend to the edge of the page, make sure the images touch the bleeds to avoid undesired white edges.
  6. Use guides to organize products: use columns and guides as grids to organize product images on the page and ensure that they’re evenly spaced.

What Pages Should Your Product Catalogue Template Include?

There are certain pages to consider when you make a product catalogue template. These pages can help you organize your content effectively and convey a clear idea. The following pages are standard in every product catalogue template because they have proven to be successful at displaying products in a cohesive manner. Let’s take a look:

  • Cover and back cover: like any publication, make sure you include a cover that fits the content inside the template design.
  • Table of Contents: if you’re working with many different products, consider dividing the content into sections so it’s easier for readers to find products.
  • Product pages: lay out different product pages. For instance, set up pages that show a different number of products so the catalogue doesn’t seem monotone and repetitive.
  • Content pages: while a product catalogue’s main purpose is to showcase products, content pages are useful to give details of the brand or even inspiration for seasonal products or services.
  • Dividers: these pages are to separate different sections on a catalogue. These also provide a nice clean break for readers to reset their attention.

What You’ll Be Creating

Would you like to see how you’d look with eyes of a different color? In this tutorial I’ll show you how to change eye color in Photoshop. With my method, you’ll be able to make the eyes brighter, darker, and change their hue, no matter how bright or dark they currently are. You won’t only learn how to recolor the eyes drastically, but also how to enhance eye color in Photoshop, if this is your preference!

But if you want to save time, a subscription to Envato Elements gives you access to thousands of Photoshop actions, including this eye coloring action:

What You’ll Learn in This Tutorial on Changing Eye Color in Photoshop

  • How to edit eye color in Photoshop
  • How to enhance eye color in Photoshop
  • How to brighten eyes in Photoshop
  • How to make eyes pop in Photoshop
  • How to change eye color in a photo

What You’ll Need

To learn how to edit eye color in Photoshop, first you need a photo. It should be a high-quality photo, high resolution and sharp. If your eyes are really dark, make sure you choose a photo where you can still see some detail of the iris. Here is the photo I used to present the effect:

Follow along with us over on our Envato Tuts+ YouTube channel:

How to Change Eye Color in Photoshop

Step 1

Open your photo. Press W, move to the upper bar, and click Select and Mask.

Step 2

Take the Brush Tool (B), adjust the brush size to the size of the iris, and paint over them.

Step 3

Then hold the Alt key and paint over the areas that shouldn’t be a part of the selection, like the eyelids and eyelashes. This selection doesn’t have to be perfect—we’ll get a chance to adjust it later.

Step 4

Make the brush smaller and paint over the pupils while holding the Alt key. If you can’t see the pupils, try to guess where they are.

Step 6

Add a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer. It will automatically use the selection as its mask. Name the layer Color.

Step 7

Check Colorize and give the eyes a bright, intense color. Check if the color reaches too far or doesn’t cover the whole iris. If this is the case, paint on the Layer Mask to fix it—paint with black to remove the effect, and with white to add it. Experiment with different colors—some are less forgiving than others.

Step 8

The eyes may lack detail now, especially if you’re trying to brighten them. To fix this, double-click the layer and go to the Blend If section. Grab the lower dark marker and drag it to the right—this will remove the effect from the dark parts of the photo.

Hold the Alt key when dragging to split the marker and make the effect more gradual. The brighter the intended color, the farther you can move the marker. You can adjust this setting later as well.

Step 9

If you try to make the eyes darker, you’ll notice that the shine over the iris gets darker too. To fix this, hold the Control key and click the Layer Mask to create a selection.

What You Will Learn in This Affinity Designer Text Tutorial

  • How to add text in Affinity Designer
  • How to add text on a path in Affinity Designer
  • How to make text curve in Affinity Designer

Follow along with us over on our Envato Tuts+ YouTube channel:

What You Will Need

You can use any fonts as you learn how to make curved text in Affinity Designer, but these are the ones I used in this tutorial:

1. How to Add Text on a Path in Affinity Designer

Step 1

First of all, you will need a shape on which you can add the text. For this example we’ll use a circle, but keep in mind that you can apply text on any type of shape or path.

Select the Ellipse Tool (M) from your Tools and click and drag on your canvas to create a 250 px circle. Make sure that you’re holding down the Shift key as you click and drag to easily create a perfect circle.

To move this circle to the center of the canvas, click the Alignment button from the context toolbar, and just click the Align Center and Align Middle buttons. Now that you have your shape, let’s learn how to add text in Affinity Designer.

circle centercircle centercircle center

Step 2

Make sure that your circle is still selected and select the Artistic Text Tool (T) from your Tools.

Hover the cursor over the edge of your circle and, once your cursor icon changes, you can click to add text on that path. Keep the cursor slightly outside the path if you wish to add text on the outside of that path or on the inside when you wish to add the text inside that path.

For this example, we’ll add it on the outside, and let’s type in “SUPERIOR QUALITY”.

2. How to Make Text Curve in Affinity Designer

Step 1

Now that you’ve learned how to curve text in Affinity Designer, let’s see how you can adjust the position.

Take a closer at your path, and you’ll notice a green handle which indicates the starting point of the text and an orange handle which indicates the ending point of your text. Simply click and drag any of these two handles whenever you wish to adjust the position of your text on the path.

text on path handletext on path handletext on path handle

Step 2

You might have noticed that your text starts exactly from that green handle. This happens because the text alignment is set to Left.

To move your text in the center, at an equal distance between the green and orange handles, just click the Align Centre button from the context toolbar.

text on path centretext on path centretext on path centre

Step 3

In some cases, you might want to move your text from one side of the path to the other. To easily make this change, all you have to do is click the Reverse Text Path button from the context toolbar.

reverse text pathreverse text pathreverse text path

Step 4

Once you add your text, you’ll most probably want to stylize it. In order to make changes to your text, first you need to select it. Double-click when you wish to select only one word, or triple-click when you need to select more than one word.

Focus on the Character studio panel (View > Studio > Character) and replace the font with the Richson font from Envato Elements. Set the size to 55 pt, click the Font Colour wheel, and replace it with R=58 G=69 B=91, and then move to the Positioning and Transform section and increase the Tracking to 100%.

Affinity Designer text on pathAffinity Designer text on pathAffinity Designer text on path

Step 5

Make sure that you deselect the text and click at the end of it, and then simply press Enter to add a second piece of text, but this time on the inside of that same circle.

Type “MADE IN GERMANY”, and now you have another two handles (darker green and red) that can be used to adjust the position of this new text.

text inside a pathtext inside a pathtext inside a path

Step 6

Even though you added the text on the inside of the path, there’s a neat technique that you can use to move it to the outside of the path.

Make sure that you have it selected or simply click on it, move to the context toolbar, and just adjust the position of that Baseline slider.

text on path baselinetext on path baselinetext on path baseline

Step 7

Finally, triple-click this text to select it, replace the font with Robinson Regular, and lower the tracking to 50%.

Verizon modified a Ford F650 to provide first-responders with mobile 5G access

When Texas was hit by an extreme cold snap earlier this year and the state’s independent power grid failed, many people couldn’t use their phones to access the internet and get information about the situation as it developed. Climate change is making those types of previously once in a lifetime weather events a more frequent occurrence and it’s forcing carriers to adapt.

On Tuesday, Verizon (Engadget’s parent company) introduced the Tactical Humanitarian Operations Response (THOR) vehicle. The carrier built THOR using a modified Ford F650 truck. The front of the vehicle has seats for a driver and five passengers, while the “command center” you see at the back has room for three individuals. THOR can bring 5G and satellite connectivity to an area where a natural disaster may have knocked network access out or there wasn’t any connectivity in the first place.

Verizon envisions THOR assisting first-responders and the military “under nearly any conditions,” be that wildfires out in California or following a hurricane in Florida, as just some examples. The company developed the prototype with help from the Pentagon’s NavalX and the SoCal TechBridge. Outside of connecting first-responders and military personnel, it also comes with a tethered drone that can be used for search and rescue operations and collecting information on a disaster.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen a US carrier trot out an initiative like this. Back in 2019, AT&T showed off FirstNet One, a 55-foot aerostat the carrier said could float above disaster sites and provide wireless communication for first responders.

President Biden will order the FTC to draft ‘right to repair’ rules

After years of advocacy work, the right to repair movement in the US could soon see a significant breakthrough. According to Bloomberg, President Joe Biden will “in the coming days” direct the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to draft new regulations to empower consumers to repair their devices on their own and at independent shops.

While there aren’t many details on the executive order just yet, it will reportedly mention phone companies as a possible target of regulation. However, farmers are expected be the primary beneficiary. During Tuesday's White House briefing, Press Secretary Jen Psaki said the order would give them "the right to repair their own equipment how they like.” White House economic adviser Brian Deese said on Friday that the order is broadly designed to drive “greater competition in the economy, in service of lower prices for American families and higher wages for American workers.”

Over the years, states across the US have tried to pass right to repair legislation. However, companies like Caterpillar, John Deere, and Apple have consistently lobbied against those efforts, claiming they would put consumers at risk by compromising the security and safety of their devices. And to date, no state has passed legislation that makes it easier for consumers to repair their products independently. As Motherboard notes, Biden’s order will mark the first time a president has weighed in on the issue.

"Big tech has been taking advantage of consumers for too long, at the expense of local small businesses. We're very encouraged that the Biden administration is planning to use the rulemaking power of the FTC to restore competition," a spokesperson for iFixit told Engadget when we reached out to the company to ask about the order.

The move comes as support for the right to repair movement builds in other parts of the world. In 2020, the European Commission said it would introduce legislation to push manufacturers to create products that are easier to repair and reuse. That same year, the European Parliament voted to direct the Commission to develop and introduce a mandatory labeling system that assigns a reparability score to products.

We’ve reached out to the Consumer Technology Association, which represents electronics manufacturers, for comment.

Update 6:00PM ET: Added comment from iFixit.

Animal Crossing Edition Monopoly arrives in August

Tom Nook apparently isn't content to sell houses to millions of Animal Crossing: New Horizons players. It seems he wants Monopoly players to fork over their bells as well. That's right, as leaks suggested in recent days, Animal Crossing Edition Monopoly is on the way.

Rather than the traditional Monopoly format of buying properties and charging other players rent when they land on one of them, you'll be collecting bugs, fish, fossils and fruit. You'll also meet some other characters and carry out island tasks. When you stop by Nook's Cranny, you can use bells to buy decorations, which are worth Nook Miles. Whoever collects the most Nook Miles is the winner.

You'll need to be careful, though. If you're unlucky, you might go right to jail.

Monopoly Animal Crossing New Horizons Edition
Hasbro

The crossover follows previous collaborations between Hasbro and game publishers. Along with Fortnite and Pac-Man versions of Monopoly, there have been severalMario-based editions. ACNH is one of the biggest games of the past year or so, and it wouldn't be surprising to see Animal Crossing fans snap this up.

Animal Crossing Edition Monopoly costs $25 and it'll be available in August. You can pre-order the board game now.

Twitter wants your help developing new privacy features

Twitter has shared concepts for four features that could give users more control over who can see, read and find their accounts, and it wants feedback from the public on what it showed off. The first of those features would make it easier for those with protected accounts to make their tweets publicly viewable in instances where they want to reply to non-followers. “If you have a protected account and reply to someone who isn’t following you, you may not know they can’t see your reply,” Lena Emara, Twitter people experience designer, wrote in a thread. So one idea is to include a prompt that reminds people of that fact, as well as give them the option to easily switch their tweets to public.

Another potential feature would help those with multiple accounts. A mockup Emara shared shows an interface element that would allow you to switch to a different account directly from Twitter’s main composition window. What’s more, the new interface would allow you to see, at a glance, the name, handle and privacy status of your accounts all in one place.

The two other concepts Emara shared focus more on privacy. One of those details a feature that would periodically touch base with users to see if they’re happy with their current discoverability and conversation settings and make it easy to tweak them as needed without visiting the app’s settings menu. Lastly, the second one would create a system for notifying you when people search for your username and give you more control over whether your account is discoverable that way. That’s something that could be significant for limiting online harassment.

As with the last time Twitter showed off several concept features, everything you see above “are just ideas and not being built (yet?).” They may never mature into features the company ships. That said, the feedback Twitter collects could inform other tools the company builds in the future.
