New Higher Envato Marketplace Rates!

For four years the Envato Marketplaces have helped authors around the world earn an income selling their digital wares. Along the way we’ve grown from one marketplace to seven, with more on the way. We’ve gone from hundreds of members to hundreds of thousands. Items from our marketplaces have appeared in projects for companies big and small, all around the world. And most importantly of all, we’ve had thousands of authors cash out earnings, ranging from a bit of money for a big weekend to sums in the tens of thousands of dollars a month!

It’s been an amazing ride, and here at Envato along with our commitment to growing Tuts+, we are completely committed to making our marketplaces the best around. That’s why I’m very excited today to announce that as of the end of September we are rolling out some dramatically improved rates for all our exclusive authors!

As the sites have grown, so has our revenue. As we increase in volume and size we’re able to push back more and more to the authors. This is in fact our third rates increase now, and it’s always a really happy day when we get to make the changeover and start putting more money in author’s hands.

50-70% with a $75k scale

The new rates, which go into effect at the very end of September, will see new exclusive authors get 50% of every sale out of the gate, with their commission rising up to 70% as they sell more. The volume of sales needed to get to 70% has been dramatically reduced from the old $300,000 mark, down to just $75,000. While that’s still a lot of money, it will mean dozens of our existing authors will suddenly catapult up to the highest rate and every author will see a big increase to their earnings.

If you’re wondering just how much people sell on our marketplaces, perhaps a stat will help. Our top seller across the marketplaces has sold just shy of a whoppingly huge half a million dollars in gross sales! That’s an enormous amount of money, most of which happened in under a year.

Lest you think that’s just for the biggest marketplaces, in fact on every single one of the seven marketplaces, we have authors whose take home earnings are in the four figures each month! So that’s authors selling not just on ThemeForest, our marketplace for websites, but also the marketplaces for graphics, video, audio, 3D, Flash and code and scripts.

How much could you make selling your work?

Workshop #112: Electric Funk by DJ Dost

At Audiotuts+ we regularly put up a reader track for workshopping and critique (find out how to submit a track). This is how it works: you upload your song, and every week or so we’ll publish one here and step away from the podium. The floor is yours to talk about the track and how the artist can fix problems in and improve upon the mix and the song.

This track has been submitted for your friendly, constructive criticism. They have put their track (and their heart and soul) in your hands to learn and get useful feedback.

  • Do you enjoy the song or track itself? Does it have potential?
  • Can the arrangement be improved?
  • How did you find the mix? What would you do differently?
  • What do you enjoy about the rhythm track? What can be done to improve it?
  • Is the choice of instruments relevant and effective for the style/song?
  • Are the lyrics (if any) effective? Does the style, arrangement and genre of the song suit them?
  • Can you suggest any specific techniques that might improve the track?
  • Do you have any other constructive feedback?

Silverlight and XAML

XAML is a key part of Silverlight development – it allows you to declaratively define your user interface and it makes it easy for tools such as Visual Studio and Expression Blend to share that UI definition. In this video we take a look at some of the key features of XAML that you’ll encounter whilst working with Silverlight and also a little around how XAML ‘works’ in your Silverlight applications.

What’s Covered?

Here’s a quick breakdown of what’s covered in this screencast:

  • The alternative to XAML
  • Anatomy of a XAML document
  • Visual Studio design and code views
  • Naming and accessing elements
  • Element properties
  • XML namespaces
  • Custom types within XAML

Stumped By a Buzzword? Demystify Office Jargon At Unsuck It

I have a love/hate relationship with buzzwords: I’m greatly amused when I hear a burst of buzzwords come out of a competent colleague’s mouth, but it’s infuriating to watch them used to wiggle out of responsibility or cover up a coworker’s underwhelming skill set. Sometimes I wonder if so-called “business acumen” is nothing more than the frequent use of buzzwords and glittery business jargon.

So, I decided to learn a new sub-dialect of English: buzzword.

I was previously using Buzzwhack as my buzzword dictionary of choice, but I was recently shown Unsuck It, a buzzword haven where you can view their collection of carefully curated buzzwords, submit new entries and even take a shot at “unsucking” one of the undefined terms with a concise, sensible translation. It’s really pushing the envelope of bleeding edge, web 2.0 crowdsourcing! Just kidding, it’s an interesting project, and it will obviously grow as it gains momentum from submissions and definitions. Maybe Unsuck It will become the Merriam-Webster of buzzwords. So, if you wonder what “solutioneering” might mean, or are puzzled by the term “bucketize,” this is the place where you can learn it, submit it or define it.

Why I Stick to Pen and Paper for Goals and Tasks

Technology is great…but I sure do like pen and paper – as I mentioned to one of our readers who asked me what I use to keep track of things.  For one thing, I remember things better when I write them down by hand; it’s as if my hand keeps memories of each of its motions and my mind is better able to recall these motions later as the words sink deeper in my brain.  I must think of each item I write down before setting my pen to paper and so I make better decisions using this increasingly old-fashioned way.  On a computer screen everything can be erased, so my brain doesn’t retain the words the same way – it’s all temporary and it all sits in shallower spots in my mind.

And so it is that I write down my tasks and to-do items on my small notebook, which I have with me at all times in addition to my light weight paper organizer.  My boyfriend, who does graphic design for all things digital, gave me his old iPhone when he got a new one and he showed me the world of apps for everything productivity: timers, to do lists, calendars and a variety of other apps I could use to track, measure and schedule my time.  At first I used the phone to play Angry Birds (and sometimes as an mp3 player), but eventually I gave in to my boyfriend’s pleas to take advantage of the features of the wonderful invention that would make my life so much easier – and my purse so much lighter.  I put aside my flip phone, my boxy mp3 player and my paper aids, and switched to the iPhone.

I brought back the small notebook and pen after dealing with the tiny letter buttons involved with using the Notes app (and for any typing in the iPhone), which did come in handy when I ran out of ink I must confess.  The notifications and reminders don’t always work so instead of missing more appointments I brought back my 2-buck paper organizer.  I lost contacts in the process of syncing, which for me overall a nightmare, and using all these time-enhacing features made the phone run out of battery faster than an obese asthmatic runs out of air up 8 flights of stairs.  So I stuck to paper and pen.

At some point I tried Gmail Tasks, which I thought was the coolest task “thingy” ever!  I could add emails to my task list, which really uncluttered my inbox but to get to my task list I had to go to Gmail and – hey, look!  My friends sent me a couple of messages, let me just read a little.  Two hours later my tasks were still unfinished and I was on Gtalk discussing authentic French croissants.  If I were out eating said croissants I had no access to my tasks either since they were online and so quickly I was off Gmail tasks and back to paper and pen.

But for my long term goals I surely wanted something more high-tech and precise.  I started with 43things.com, where I can write the things I want to do and make entries as to how I’m accomplishing them.  I can also see how other people who are or have done the same things have done them, which is pretty cool, though it becomes time consuming.  Sharing my goals with others made me feel a little more responsible for accomplishing them but it just wasn’t as organized as my sheet of paper behind my door.  I needed some charts, some lines criss-crossing my page or something and so I tried a mind-map.  The tutorial made the mind-map look awesome and I was good for several days at growing my map, putting together lines, drawings, arrows and all sorts of things.  But just to get to my map I had to turn on my computer and sometimes my thoughts would have passed by the time I was ready to start mapping so I went back to a sheet of paper behind my door.  It’s always there when I want to write something down or just have a look at how things are going with my plans.

Timing my tasks and activities is something I have no problem doing electronically since I accomplish many of my tasks – like writing – on the computer.  I tried a few different software till I settled on Klok, a free program by Rob McKeown from mcgraphix.  There are a few things that could be improved but overall it does what I need it to do and that’s fine.  Sometimes I forget Klok though but I’m getting much better at remembering both to open it and to start its timer since I started adding these tasks to the list in my small notebook.

Please comment to let us know what you use for keeping track of your long and short term goals as well as your daily tasks!

Airlight: Photographing the Edge of Darkness

Today we’re on location in St Ives, trying something different with very long coastal exposures. You’ll see the afterglow of the sunset illuminating the sea, movement in the waves, and a beautiful final image!

Video Overview

In this digital photography tutorial we explore shooting long exposures at the edge of the day using only the remnants of light remaining in the sky.

We’ll start off with a few night photography tips and explains the camera setup before a brief tour of the location. Following on, we are then shown some stunning samples of images shot using Airlight or “at the edge of darkness” as Simon likes to refer to it.

We finish off with some Adobe Photoshop training where we are given some tips and techniques for directing your viewers attention toward parts of the image you want them to focus on.

Quick Tip: Quick and Easy JavaScript Testing with “Assert”

Years ago, I learned a deceptively simple “assert” function from John Resig, for testing your JavaScript. Amazingly, at barely five or six lines, this code provides a great level of power and control over your code, when testing. I’ll show you how to use it in today’s video quick tip.

Screencast

“Assert” Code

<!DOCTYPE HTML>
<html lang="en-US">
<head>
	<meta charset="UTF-8">
	<title>Easy JavaScript Testing </title>
	<style>
		.pass:before {
			content: 'PASS: ';
			color:  blue;
			font-weight: bold;
		}

		.fail:before {
			content: 'FAIL: ';
			color: red;
			font-weight: bold;

		}
	</style>
</head>
<body>

<ul id="output"></ul>

<script>
var output = document.getElementById('output');

function assert( outcome, description ) {
	var li = document.createElement('li');
	li.className = outcome ? 'pass' : 'fail';
	li.appendChild( document.createTextNode( description ) );

	output.appendChild(li);
};
</script>

That’s all you need for most basic testing! The assert function accepts two parameters:

  1. outcome: A boolean, which references whether your test passed or failed
  2. description: A short description of your test.

The assert function then simply creates a list item, applies a class of either “pass” or “fail,” dependent upon whether your test returned true or false, and then appends the description to the list item. Finally, that block of coded is added to the page. It’s crazy simple, but works perfectly.

Test 1: Your First Example

function add(num1, num2) {
	return num1 + num2;
}

var result = add(5, 20);
assert( result == 24, 'Checking the add function');

// OR
assert( add( 5, 20 ) == 24, 'Checking the add function');
JavaScript Testing Example

Test 2: Closures

var someArray = [1,2,3,4,5],
	len = someArray.length,
	i = 0;

var count = 0;

for ( ; i < len; i++ ) {
	setTimeout(function() {
		assert( count++ === i, 'Checking the value of: ' + i );
	}, i * 300);
}
JavaScript Testing Example

Uh oh! What happened?

This is a common issue, and the answer is to implement a closure, so that we can remember the value of “i.” Otherwise, as we noticed above, the code will only render the final value in the sequence: 5.

var someArray = [1,2,3,4,5],
	len = someArray.length,
	i = 0;

var count = 0;

for ( ; i < len; i++ ) (function(i) {
	setTimeout(function() {
		assert( count++ === i, 'Checking the value of: ' + i );
	}, i * 300);
})(i);
JavaScript Testing Example

Conclusion

At first, it might appear as if only huge JavaScript libraries and such require some form of testing; however, that’s far from the truth. As we’ve demonstrated, even a simple function, like Resig’s “assert”, can potentially save us from hours of debugging! So what do you personally use to test your code?

Envato Notes – new Community Blog!

You can get the full details of the big Envato Rate Increase on our brand new Envato Community blog – Envato Notes.

Notes, which launched just last week, is going to be the hub of the entire Envato / Tuts+ community with news about our sites, interviews of people who work on our sites, tips, giveaways, competitions and much more.

Happy Birthday Authors!

So on the fourth anniversary since our first marketplace FlashDen first hit the web, I’d like to take a moment and say Happy 4th Birthday to all our authors. Thank you so much for choosing to sell with us. Thank you so much for being a part of our amazing community. Thank you for helping us make the Envato Marketplaces what they are.

One More Thing …

With the Birthday Bundle now finished, our massive rates change announced, well … to borrow a line from Mr Jobs, there’s just one more thing. Next week, I’ll be back with a very exciting announcement – a whole new Envato Marketplace! Yep it’s one heck of an August for us here at Envato, so stay tuned for even more big news!

Woohoo!!!
