How to Do a Drop Cap in InDesign

Final product image
What You’ll Be Creating

In this tutorial, we’ll take a look at how to do a drop cap in InDesign. We’ll start with the basics, and then explore ways you could expand your drop cap design. Whether you’re designing for a magazine spread, a book, or another document, these concepts will help you create a beautiful drop cap.

What You Will Need

This tutorial uses the following assets:

Feel free to download these assets as your work along. Or you can work with a different drop cap font, illustrations, and other assets of your own if you prefer.

Follow along with us over on our Envato Tuts+ YouTube channel:

What Is a Drop Cap?

So, what is drop cap text? Let’s begin with a drop cap definition and example.

A drop cap is the first letter of a sentence or paragraph that’s been made larger than the rest of the text. It spans more than one line of your paragraph and is usually included for visual interest.

drop cap
What is drop cap text? This image is an example of our drop cap definition.

Drop caps can be a fun idea for the beginning of an article, the start of a chapter, or other design scenarios. Thankfully, it’s easy to create a drop cap in Adobe InDesign. Let’s dig right in.

How to Do a Drop Cap in InDesign

Step 1

Begin in a New Document, by going File > New. I’ll be working at US Letter size, or 8.5 inches wide by 11 inches tall.

InDesign new document

Step 2

Then, select the Type Tool in your Tools panel.

Click and drag on your document to create a large, paragraph-sized text box. It doesn’t have to be perfect. You can click and drag on the resize handles at any time to resize it.

InDesign text box

Step 3

Next, Paste a paragraph’s worth of content into your text box. This could be body copy from your project. Or, if you don’t have any text to experiment with, you can use Lorem Ipsum.

You can also go to the Properties panel and select Fill with Placeholder Text. This will also use lorem ipsum dummy copy. Choose whichever option you prefer.

InDesign paste text

Step 4

Next, open up the Paragraph panel. You can find it by going to Window > Type & Tables > Paragraph. Here’s a preview of what the Paragraph panel looks like.

InDesign Paragraph panel

Step 5

With the Type Tool active, select the first letter of your paragraph. It should be highlighted, as shown in the example below.

Tip: You can zoom in with Zoom tool, in your Tools panel, if you need a closer look!

InDesign zoom tool

Step 6

With your first letter selected, return to the Paragraph panel.

Edit the Drop Cap Number of Lines value, highlighted below. I went with a value of 10. Choose whatever best suits the look and feel you prefer.

indesign drop cap

Step 7

We’ve created a basic drop cap InDesign example here, but we could push our drop cap design further.

Let’s start by changing the drop cap font. Open the Character panel by going to Window > Type & Tables > Character

Then, select the Type Tool. Use it to select and highlight your drop cap. We can then turn to the font dropdown in the Character panel to change the font.

I’ll use Grantmouth Vol.2 Typeface in this example. It’s a vintage display font, and it’ll command a lot of attention against a neutral sans serif.

InDesign character panel

Step 8

We can also change the font color. Again, you’ll need to select the drop cap character with your Type Tool.

Then, turn to your Tools panel. Click the T symbol beneath your Stroke and Fill Color. This makes your color selections apply to text. We can then choose a new color by clicking on the Fill Color

indesign font color

Step 9

Using the Color Picker, I selected a light green color. Once you’re happy with your selection, click OK.

indesign color picker

Step 10

But the drop cap isn’t sitting quite right on the paragraph. We can adjust this in the Character panel.

With the drop cap selected, raise the baseline 50 points using the Baseline Shift. It’s highlighted in the screenshot below.

indesign baseline shift

Step 11

Let’s also adjust the Tracking in the Character panel. Select the drop cap, and then set the Tracking to 40. Notice how this moves the body copy away from the drop cap.

indesign tracking

Step 12

We can also scale the drop cap from the Character Panel. For example, I adjusted the Horizontal Scale to 120%, making it a little wider. Experiment with these values, but don’t distort the type too much.

indesign scaling

Step 13

The following paragraphs don’t quite line up with the drop cap the way I’d like them to. We can adjust this in the Paragraph panel.

Select the extra paragraphs using the Type Tool. Then, we can adjust the Left Indent. I went with 0.5 points here to better align the left indent with the drop cap.

InDesign Left Indent

Step 14

Next, let’s dress things up with some imagery. I’m going to use watercolor graphics from this pretty watercolor illustration set

Import your imagery by going to File > Place. Select the file from your computer, and then click OK. We can then click and drag to place our image into our document.

indesign place image

Step 15

Resize this image and place it near your drop cap.

You can also crop the image by resizing the rectangle frame holding it. In this example, I adjusted the frame so that any content overlapping the drop cap is no longer visible.

InDesign resize and crop images

Step 16

Repeat these steps to dress up your layout. I placed two more images here: some leaves and a watercolor brush stroke

Dress up your drop cap design any way you like! This is just one possible drop cap InDesign example.

Tip: Want to preview your work without seeing any guides or rectangular frames? Go to View > Overprint Preview. Then, go to View > Grids & Guides > Hide Guides. This will give you a preview with these visual guides hidden, like the preview below.

What Kind of Drop Cap Design Would You Create?

Now that we’ve looked at how to do a drop cap in InDesign, what kind of drop cap design would you make? There are so many possibilities here.

How to Use Affinity Designer to Design a Logo

Final product image
What You’ll Be Creating

Wondering how to set up an Affinity Designer logo? Then you’re in the right place! In this Affinity Designer logo tutorial, we’ll create a logo in Affinity Designer. Then we’ll go over the best practices of how to export and use logos and vector art created in Affinity Designer. You’ll be able to apply this knowledge to all sorts of design projects!

What You’ll Learn in This Affinity Designer Logo Tutorial

  • How to use the type tools in Affinity Designer to create a logo
  • How to use the shape tools in Affinity Designer to create a logo
  • How to organize and prepare a logo in Affinity Designer for web or print
  • How to export a logo in Affinity Designer

What You Will Need

For the purposes of this Affinity Designer logo tutorial, I’ll be using the Moon Impact typeface from Envato Elements for the font. We’ll be making the shapes from scratch using Affinity Designer’s vector shape tools.

Need to Tune Up Your Skills?

If you’re looking for a crash course on how to use Affinity Designer, check out this amazing introductory Affinity Designer video from our YouTube channel. It’s a great place to start brushing up your skills so that you can take on all kinds of projects, including this logo design tutorial.

1. How to Create a Logo in Affinity Designer

Step 1

First, let’s create our logo! We’re going to create this logo entirely out of vector components to ensure that it will be scalable at any size. Generally, this means using the shape and drawing tools within Affinity Designer, as well as the type tools. Any graphics such as images or textures would be considered raster imagery that does not scale well and so is not suitable for logos.

Start a new document in Affinity Designer by going to File > New.

Affinity Designer Logo Make New Document

Step 2

Don’t worry too much about the settings; the defaults are fine in this case. We’ll be going with an 8.5 x 11 inch canvas for this logo design tutorial.

Go ahead and click Create.

Affinity Designer Logo Create New Document

Step 3

Next, select the Artistic Text Tool!

Affinity Designer Select Artistic Text Tool

Step 4

Now with the Artistic Text Tool selected, click somewhere on the canvas and type out the name of your logo We’re using “goodloot” for a loot box concept!

Now, highlight the text and use the Moon Impact font with a Size of 90 pt.

Affinity Designer Type Text

Step 5

Now, let’s add some colors that will be suitable for this logo. Highlight the word “good” and add a yellow color and for the word “loot” a green color.

Tip: If you want the exact colors, you can add some color swatches with the hex codes #F9C52C and #48CB7B.

Affinity Designer Logo Select Colors

Step 6

Let’s create a shape to finish up this logo! Select the Rectangle Tool from the toolbar.

Tip: You may need to click and hold in order to select the square.

Affinity Designer Logo Select Rectangle

Step 7

For the fill color, select none, and pick a green color for the stroke. Make the stroke around 10 pt.

Affinity Logo Designer Square

Step 8

Using the Move Tool, hold an anchor point and then drag to rotate the shape. Turn the square until it creates a diamond shape.

Tip: Hold Shift as you rotate so that it snaps into place.

Affinity Rotate Square

Step 9

Now repeat the same process by creating another shape, except with different settings.

This time, we’ll use the yellow color as a fill and use no stroke. Rotate and place the square on the inside of the green square, as shown below!

Affinity Designer Logo Finished

2. How to Prepare a Logo in Affinity Designer

Step 1

First, you’ll want your layers to be nice and organized. This will help out a lot when we export to file types which retain information, and for our own purposes when we use this logo in our designs.

Luckily, our design isn’t too complicated, with only three layers! With the Affinity Designer Layers panel open, click the top layer and then hold Shift as you click the bottom layer. This will highlight all the layers.

Affinity Designer Layer Select

Step 2

Now right-click the selected layers and Group.

Affinity Designer Group Layers

Step 3

Now all your elements have been added to a group. The great thing about groups is that now the logo will act as a single object. So if you use the Move Tool, it will all move as a single unit. This is extremely useful when using the logo in our designs as the logo will be something we will want to use many times!

Tip: Click the small arrow to the side of the group in the Affinity Designer Layers panel. You can still have access to the individual layers if you need to edit the design.

Affinity Designer Grouped Layers

Step 4

You may want to adjust and edit your canvas size to better match the dimensions of our finished logo. To do this, go to File > Document Setup.

Affinity Logo Design Prepare Document Setup

Step 5

From here, you can adjust the size of the document dimensions to better suit the proportions of the logo. Once you’re satisfied with your chosen dimensions, go ahead and select OK.

Affinity Logo Design Change Dimensions

Step 6

Now we can save our work by going to File > Save As…

By default, this will be a .afdesign type project. This means that it’s a project file specifically designed to be opened by Affinity Designer. You can now use this project file in all of your designs simply by copying the grouped object and pasting it into other projects.

Affinity Designer Logo Save As

3. How Do I Export My Affinity Designer Logo?

Step 1

There are a lot of options when it comes to formats you can export your logo to. The format you choose will largely depend on what you need to use it for. The main difference, however, will be whether you are exporting a raster image or a vector type format.

You will find all the exporting options under File > Export.

affinity Designer Logo Export

Step 2

To save a raster image which would be suitable for the web or for sharing as an image document, use the PNG, JPEG, GIF, or TIFF options. This image won’t be suitable for design work, but it’s a great way to show off your logo quickly.

I would suggest going with PNG for logos as it does a great job of keeping flat colors crisp with a relatively low file size.

Affinity Designer Export PNG

Step 3

Let’s review the general settings! The size will determine the dimensions of the images. This dimension can be as small or as high as you want, and the quality will be retained! If you’re sharing online, I would suggest about 1000 x 1000 px.

Affinity Designer Export PNG Dimensions

Step 4

The Area setting is also important! As your canvas will often be larger than your imagery, you can choose to only export the selection so it won’t include all of the white space.

Once you are happy with your settings here, you can click Export on the bottom right. That’s all there is to exporting as a raster image!

Affinity Designer Logo Export PNG Area

Step 5

You will often find that people want your document in the PDF format. This is great for printing and is an easily accessible format to share.

Go ahead and click on the PDF icon.

Affinity Designer Logo Export PDF

Step 6

As you can see, the settings are fairly similar to that of the raster images. You can select a variety of presets here, but I would suggest the PDF (for print) option as this retains a high quality.

Affinity Logo Export PDF Settings

Step 7

So what if you need vector file types? Well, they are here too! Vector file types will allow people to expand and use the logo at any size. These file types will even keep some of your project information such as the different layers. This is great for sharing your logo with other programs. You will often find that printing jobs which require very large sizes will ask for EPS files!

To export as SVG, click the SVG icon!

Affinity Designer Logo Export SVG

Step 8

As you can see, there are some familiar settings. The one you will want to pay special attention to, however, is the Raster DPI. You will want to leave this blank to ensure that nothing is rasterized. If our logo contained any photos or textures, we would apply the quality of this here. Luckily, our logo is all vector based!

Go ahead and select Export if you need to save in this file format.

Affinity Designer Logo Export SVG

Step 9

Next, we’ll look at the EPS file format. This is a great format as it will allow us to open up our logo in other programs such as Adobe Illustrator with most of the project information intact. This is also a great format for printing very large files such as billboards.

Affinity Designer Export EPS

Step 10

As you can see, the settings are once again similar. EPS (for export) is a great setting to use here. Raster DPI should remain blank for our purposes.

Go ahead and click Export if you need this logo in the EPS format.

Affinity Designer Export EPS

And there you have it! Thanks for following this logo design tutorial. You should now have a good grasp on the basics of how to use Affinity Designer to create and use a logo. You also learned how to manage a vector logo in Affinity Designer and how to export it for use in a large variety of design projects.

5 Quick Infographic Design Tips for 2021

An infographic should be engaging and take the substance of your research and make it appealing to your audience. That way you can drive traffic to your website or reach another goal.

A well-designed infographic makes a complicated subject easy to understand. It transforms a dense topic into an interesting interaction.

Learn how to design an infographic. Discover the process. From research to laying it out in Illustrator or Photoshop with style and clarity. Here are five quick-fire tips to designing a great infographic:

1. Research and Collect Your Data

Collecting and sorting through data is where an infographic begins. Data is raw and messy to begin with. You may need to work with Excel spreadsheets, or statistical data that you pull together from a credible source.

Now you need to read through everything, so you understand the data before you start pulling out compelling facts. Find the through line that connects the dots, then pinpoint those statistics that’ll highlight your message best.

Remember: the facts need to support the story you plan to tell.

2. Discover Your Narrative

Data gets exciting once you start to see a compelling story you can tell. It’s important to define your goal with this infographic. Is it to explain a complex process, highlight an emerging trend, or support an initiative? A great story can be found if you spend time with your data looking for what will electrify your audience.

Flat Elements Infographics Design Inspiration

It’s challenging to find a narrative that’ll achieve your unique intent and is a great story that’ll engage your audience. Solving that challenge though, that’s where awesome infographics come from. Ask yourself if the data supports your story? Is it interesting? Does it meet your goals? Is it a story that needs to be told?

3. Choose Your Infographic Template

Once you’ve selected the data you want to highlight, then it’s time to consider the format you’ll use to visualize it. There are many choices with how to present your data, from bar charts to process diagrams.

Look through the templates we’ve got above. Or jump over to Envato Elements or GraphicRiver to explore hundreds of infographics design templates. Look through the options and select one that fits your data and story you want to tell best. Also, consider supporting assets. Illustrations and icons can help you put together a more engaging infographic.

There are a couple of camps about designing infographics. One believes in displaying data cleanly, with a minimal focus on typography, white space, and focus. The other infographic design camp believes in combining your data with illustrations. Either approach can work. Plan that you’ve got the assets to achieve the look and results you’re aiming for.

Learn more about how to illustrate and not decorate your data:

4. Customize Your Infographic Design Templates

Now it’s finally time to fire up Photoshop or Illustrator, open your infographic template file, and start customizing it. You can make the design customizations yourself or hire a professional infographic designer to assist you. We’ve got many handpicked designers you can work with through Envato Studio.

Now begin by considering your hierarchy. What’s the most important data you want to feature? Your template will have a spot where you can insert your highlighted numbers. Then add the rest of your information. It should support your main points and the story you’re crafting in this infographic.

Then select your fonts, fit your colors to your brand, and polish your infographic. We’ve got tutorials that’ll help you with styling infographics in Illustrator. Creating bar charts, designing a 3D pie chart, and the process of vectorizing maps.

5. Refine, Test, and Release

Now take your finished infographic and share it with your team (or client). If you work in a studio, or office, get feedback from your whole group. You want to make sure that it’s readable and easy to understand. Show it to people that haven’t seen the infographic yet, so you’re getting feedback based on fresh eyes.

Now refine it based on the feedback you collect. And iterate until it reads clearly. Then you’re ready to put your infographic to use. Share it on your website, publish it on your social channels, or insert it into your final project!

5 Inspiring Infographic Design Trends For 2021

We’ve reviewed some of the best infographic page templates and infographic layout ideas and tips. Now, I’ll share some cool infographic design trends for 2021:

1. Isometric Illustrations and Icons

Isometric design is definitely the hottest design trend of 2021. Isometric illustration is a type of 3D design in which there are no converging perspective lines. It’s like a trendy mix of flat design and 3D design. And it looks awesome in infographics since it makes them pop out instantly.

Check this example for some infographic design inspiration. This pie chart features an isometric design and neon colors, another trend we’ll explore further below.

This infographic format is a great example of isometric illustrations.

2. Flat and Simple Character Design

This one is another big infographic design trend. Flat design and oversimplified characters are conquering infographics all over the world. This character design style has evolved so much that in most cases, the character won’t have facial features.

Why is it trending? Remember that these characters in infographics are supportive elements. The simplification is meant to keep the viewer’s attention on the essential information of the graph, and not in the characters.

3. Play With Fonts

Nowadays, infographics use a variety of different fonts. And this trend isn’t going anywhere. The rule: be as creative as you can, as long as is readable.

Do you need a bold san-serif font? Or perhaps an attractive handwritten font to catch the eye? In Envato Elements we’ve got thousands of fonts you can choose from and download as many as you need with your subscription.

4. Bright and Neon Colors

Bright and neon color are trending this year in infographic design for a very simple reason: they attract attention. These colors are a fast way to get your infographic noticed.

Neon is trending because it looks fantastic on dark backgrounds, like in the infographic format below.

Neon infographics shine on black backgrounds, a nice infographic layout idea.

5. Muted Palettes and Monochrome Schemes

Now, on the other side of the coin, muted palettes are trending as well. And this is because bright colors might not suit all types of infographic’s purposes.

Go for a muted or monochrome palette if you need a clean, more elegant infographic page. If you need it for your work, or for a formal or serious topic, a muted palette is the best way to go.
