Twitter client Weet for Mac now available in beta

Weet for MacTwitter client Weet for iPhone (US $0.99) has been available on the App Store for a while now, but fans of the mobile interface can now give it a try on their Macs, too. MacStories has announced that Weet for Mac is available as a free “beta” download right here, giving users all the expected features of a Twitter client in a sleek, minimalist style that looks right at home on OS X. The top of the app features separate tabs for your timelines, mentions, direct messages, lists, and search/trending topics, but my favorite feature? The ability to mute certain users or hashtags, which is vital if you are trying to avoid finding out what happened on your favorite TV show before having a chance to watch it.

I gave it a workout on my Mac and it worked rather well. The interface reminded me of the way Adium looks on my machine and there didn’t seem to be a way to alter the appearance yet, but maybe that will change when it comes out of beta. (No word yet on final pricing or date.) For now I will stick to the recently reviewed Kiwi 2 and my current favorite Nambu, but Weet for Mac could certainly become a big player among Twitter clients on the Mac desktop.

iFlash adds a flash to your iPhone or iPod touch

iFlash

Of course, it kind of takes away from the idea that a mobile phone should be sleek and easy to carry, but I’m guessing that is beside the point. The iFlash is a self-powered flash module that plugs directly into the docking port of your iPhone 3G/3GS or iPod touch and allows owners to take pictures in badly lit areas. It will also work with your iPhone 4 but there’s not a lot of point in having two flashes, especially since the extra one hangs off your otherwise thin and lightweight iPhone. As an added bonus, the iFlash fits under most cases and can also be used as an LED flashlight. We have seen an add-on flash for the iPhone before but this integration looks a little nicer, even if still a bit bulky.

Available now for US $29.95 (regularly $39.95) over at Gadgets and Gear, when not in use the “small and compact iFlash can be attached to the iPhone through a plastic 3.5mm jack and left dangling from the iPhone like a phone charm.” I’m not sure a dangling charm is a big selling point, but to each their own. I would rather put that $30 or $40 towards a new iPhone that already comes with a flash — and without a charm. If I wanted to carry an accessory for my iPhone I think I would prefer a new lens choice over a flash. But if you’re stuck with an older phone and take a lot of pictures in dark places, there you go.

Back in 2007, reader Joe let us know about a DIY hack he did using LEDs and a broken iPod car charger, creating what he called the iFlash. This solution might be pricier, but it’s a little more tidy, and you won’t have to break a car charger to make it!

Image Framer creates digital frames for all your holiday pictures

Actually, you can create great looking frames for all your digital images, not just your holiday snapshots. I’ve spent part of the day playing with ImageFramer 3 from Apparent Software, a Mac utility that allows you to create frames and mats to give you just about any style you can imagine. If you don’t want to choose from the more than 400 that come with the program, you can create your own using patterns you make in a photo editor like Photoshop. Or you can modify any of the frames that are already in the library.

There are some really thoughtful features, like allowing you to change the color of the workspace you you can visualize what the image would look like hanging on a wall. You can also create shadow effects that make the frame look like a physical object interacting with directional light.

I tested the pro version, which sells for US $69.95. It’s not priced for the casual user. but it is very powerful. I was able to create a variety of compelling frames and mats without ever having to consult the help file. Once your frame is created you can save it out as a JPG, TIF, or PNG file.

Apple employees love Steve Jobs

Silicon Alley Insider has put together a chart that shows the approval ratings employees have for various CEOs at major tech companies. The chart is based on data from Glassdoor.com and reveals that Steve Jobs is the most-favored CEO, ranked by his own employees, followed closely by Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook and Eric Schmidt of Google.

Employees at struggling Yahoo give their CEO, Carol Bartz, a high-50s point rating, while outspoken Microsoft CEO, Steve Ballmer, comes in last place out of the companies listed in the chart.

Earlier this year Barron’s published a list of tech’s most-respected CEOs which put Steve Jobs in the number one spot and called him “the world’s most valuable CEO.”

Fake iPhones at JC Penney let you text away your dignity

fake iphonesThere’s little to say about these “iPhones” except that they are obviously NOT iPhones. Instead, you can “message a friend up to 50 feet away” for those times when 50 feet is too far to walk or shout. Other features on this texting device include “touch screen technology” and a calculator. Pretty awesome, eh? All on sale at just $29.99 from J.C. Penney, America’s top retailer of fake Chinese Apple products (just kidding, they sell pants there too). Batteries not included.

If you want to see a pic of a very similar fake iPhone in my personal collection, one that makes phone calls on a land line, check the next page. If you want to see a bunch of fake Apple products from Engadget, check out the highly entertaining KiRF series here.

Thanks to tipster Aaron M.

iPad, schmipad, give me a MacBook Air on the road

This morning Erica asked me to take a look at a post she had written about how well the iPad works as a laptop replacement. Although I agree with many of the points she makes in the post, I have to vehemently disagree with the entire idea that an iPad can be a true laptop replacement in times of need.

On another vacation last week (yeah, I know it seems like I’m always on vacation), I found myself really wishing for a MacBook Air or even my old white plastic MacBook so I could get some real work done (yeah, I know I shouldn’t work on vacation). Here are my counterpoints to Erica’s points, and yes, we’re still friends.

Getting Back To Your Mac: Sure, LogMeIn Ignition and iTeleport are great, and I have them on my iPad. But I try to use them as sparingly as possible and never to do work on my office iMac. Why? Most of the time, I find that even on a fast network, the scrolling required to move around the 27″ screen on the iMac is ridiculously slow.

Trying to type into our content management system here at TUAW over a screen sharing connection is an exercise in frustration; it’s slow and there’s a lag between typing and seeing the text appear on the screen (and the system doesn’t support direct editing in Mobile Safari). My only use for either of these apps is for supporting users when I’m on the road or for administering a “headless” server.

TUAW’s Holiday Gift Guide: Interactive books for children

Welcome to the TUAW Holiday Gift Guide! We’ve sorted the treasure from the junk and are serving up suggestions to make your holiday gift-giving a little easier.

Looking for an inexpensive gift for that special child in a home with an iPad, iPhone or iPod touch? You really can’t do better than an interactive children’s book or two (or three or four — maybe a series of them!). Over the past year or so, the market for these new and exciting books has blown wide open. A quick check of the iTunes store shows hundreds of such books, and last April it was reported that a full 81 percent of top selling book apps on the iPad store were for kids.

In this quickly emerging market, you’ll find many of your old favorites, as well as a huge number of new books especially made for iOS devices. Interactive books allow children to jump into the story by interacting with the pages. Not only do they give you the option of having the book read by a professional narrator, but objects seem to come alive when touched, providing animations, sounds and many other surprises, including the ability to touch a word and have it spoken, highlighted or both. In a real sense, these books seem to come alive.

This guide is far from comprehensive, since there are new books hitting the App Store every day, and I have only seen a small fraction of them. I will only recommend ones that I’ve read. With series like Dr. Seuss, I haven’t read them all, but since they mostly work the same way, I feel comfortable recommending them as a series. Read on to find some great books for kids this holiday season.

Apple compact wired keyboard gets discontinued

AppleInsider notes that Apple has quietly discontinued its compact wired keyboard. The keyboard, which has the part number MB869LL/A, has been removed from Apple’s online store, yet is still available (presumably, while supplies last) on Amazon for US$46.99.

Apple originally introduced the compact wired keyboard in early 2009 alongside iMac revisions. The wired keyboard was identical to the Apple wireless keyboard with the addition of two USB ports on either side.

For now, it appears that Apple is still selling its wired Apple Keyboard with Numeric Keypad for US$49 in the Apple online store. Apple also offers a compact Apple Wireless Keyboard for US$69 — the same Bluetooth keyboard ships with existing desktop Mac models.

Ping gets exclusive posthumous Michael Jackson song

While some people think Ping is a flop (including me), Apple did score one little victory with its iTunes-centric social media network: its secured the exclusive rights to stream a new Michael Jackson song for the next week. Visitors to Ping’s Michael Jackson page can listen to the song, titled “Much Too Soon” for free until next Thursday. As noted on Michael Jackson’s Ping page:

“Much Too Soon” was written at the time of Thriller. Michael always liked the song but never found the right home for it; here it finds its place as the bittersweet closing to the stellar collection.

“Much Too Soon” is the tenth song on the upcoming Michael Jackson album, Michael, which goes on sale on iTunes on December 14th.

Old Navy pilots iPod-based point-of-sale system, still has creepy mannequins

Old Navy, the retail clothing store chain that owned by another retail clothing store chain (The Gap, former employer of onetime Apple retail exec George Blankenship), is reportedly piloting an iPod touch-based point-of-sale (POS) system like that used in Apple Stores.

The system, known as EasyPay in the Apple retail world, uses a Linea-Pro barcode scanner and card reader sled from Infinite Peripherals to capture product and payment information and allow Apple Store customers to complete purchases from anywhere in the store.

9 to 5 Mac reports that Old Navy is now running a limited pilot of the same POS system at several of their stores. Apple has been marketing the EasyPay POS to third parties as “ZipCheck”, and it appears that Old Navy is the first to give it a try. Some of the employees using the system wear small printers attached to their belts to provide receipts on-the-go.

There is no word from Old Navy on whether or not the creepy “Supermodelquins” used in the chain’s TV spots will be equipped with ZipCheck devices to haunt your nightmares and check you out at your local store.

Rock Band Reloaded out now on App Store, Puzzle Quest 2 out soon

Two big sequels have hit the App Store in the past day or so — as the holidays are here, more big name titles will be forthcoming for sure. First up, EA has released Rock Band Reloaded, a new version of the popular Rock Band music game series for iOS. This one plays generally the same as the first game as you have to tap certain notes on the screen as they slide down the board, but there are quite a few new options, including new songs (15 now, more free tracks coming soon, and more available via in-app purchase) and a new vocal mode that allows you to sing into the iPhone’s microphone. The game is also updated for Retina Display, and it has awards and achievements to earn, though strangely, EA hasn’t embraced Game Center quite yet. The iPhone version is $4.99, and the iPad HD version is $9.99.

And Namco should have Puzzle Quest 2 on the App Store, though at the moment I can’t find it out there. The puzzler/RPG title is terrific (I really enjoyed it on Xbox Live Arcade), and it looks like Namco has decided to go with a full release for $9.99 rather than going episodic as they did with the first title. Either way, the game is great — hopefully it’ll be back out on the App Store soon.

Zynga buys Newtoy, studio rebranded as Zynga With Friends

Well how about this — Facebook and social game giant Zynga has bought up iPhone developer Newtoy, makers of the popular Games with Friends apps, including Words with Friends and Chess with Friends. Newtoy has now been rebranded as Zynga With Friends, and will apparently be working on new titles for Zynga in their own style. There’s no word on what kind of money changed hands, unfortunately, but Zynga is worth around $5.6 billion, so it has plenty to spend. This is that company’s seventh such deal in as many months.

As deals for iPhone devs go, this is a big one — Newtoy previously also worked on the We Rule title for Ngmoco, so the studio has extensive experience in social mobile gaming and monetizing those experiences. Zynga is the company behind Farmville, the most successful social game out there, with its own deep roots in the social gaming field. So this will be an interesting combination to be sure.

We just chatted with Newtoy’s David Bettner at the Austin GDC a little while ago, and he’ll be stepping into the position of studio director, with his brother Paul Bettner becoming a Zynga VP and GM of the new studio. Bettner also told us that the company was working on “at least three prototypes that were up and playable,” but it’s not clear whether those titles will continue to be made or whether Zynga will have their own products for the former Newtoy devs to work on. If nothing else, this is a big vote of confidence in the App Store yet again — Words with Friends has been a runaway hit for Newtoy, and clearly Zynga sees potential in the “with Friends” brand.
