SBSwitcher – Put SBSettings Toggles in The App Switcher (Multitasking bar)

SBSwitcher is a new jailbreak tweak available in the Cydia store. SBSwitcher places SBSettings toggles in the App Switcher. Simply scroll the App Switcher bar to the left to access SBSettings toggles.

“SBSwitcher brings the power of SBSettings to the simplicity of the app switcher bar – just scroll left! With SBSwitcher, you can also access the switcher bar and all of your SBSettings toggles from the convenience of the lock screen.”

SBSwitcher is compatible with the iPhone and iPod Touch on iOS 4.0 and later, and works well when combined with various other app switcher tweaks!

SBSwitcher adds no new icons to your homescreen. You can configure SBSwitcher from the Settings app. It makes SBSettings feel more like a native part of the iPhone.

Download SBSwitcher

You can purchase and download SBSwitcher from the Cydia Store for $2.99 via BigBoss repo.

Indeed $2.99 is quite the hefty price for a tweak that offers the same functionality that you’ve been enjoying all of this time for free. Let us know your views in the comments section below.

360|iDev is the premiere iPhone, iPod touch developer conference in the world. Every year prior to the show they have a call for papers, if you want to make a debut as a conference speaker.

iPhoneDevCamp is the brainchild of Raven and Dom. The event format is “unconference” or Barcamp-style, featuring content from the participants themselves. There are satellite events held all over the country. The next one is this August.

Popularly know to all as GDC – this conference is for all game developers, and there’s an increasing number of mobile app game developers. If you’re a game developer or want to be one, this is the one game developer conference to go to. When the boom in the mobile sector happened they branced out and now have a separate 3 day event called GDC Mobile, that contains separate tracks and events related purely to the mobile gaming space.

This is more of a general developer conference and is not just for iPhone developers. The good part aobut this conference is that it’s in multiple venues and dates, and it will set you back by only $99.

It’s been a while!

Well, it’s been a while since I posted anything constructive about Web Development, what with work and various other projects I have flying around in my head. I was chatting with Mike the other day about the fact that at the agency where I work we are moving over to Drupal, so any new project […]

2.8 million downloads for Gun Bros, 7.8 million for Zombie Farm

I am anxiously awaiting some stats on this past week’s releases in the App Store — over the past two weeks, we’ve seen some gigantic games released for iOS, and yet familiar names like Cut the Rope, Angry Birds, and Fruit Ninja are still topping the charts (along with some big EA titles benefiting from that price drop). But even if it takes a while for all of those releases to find their place on the App Store, here’s news of a few more recent titles that have done well. First up, freemium shooter Gun Bros (featured as our Daily App choice a while back) has picked up 2.8 million downloads so far, and claims 175,000 daily active users so far. That’s not huge, but it’s a nice sizable audience for a freemium title, especially one that tends a little more towards the hardcore gamer. Glu is also supporting the app with updates, including a new planet to play on, special Christmas-themed gear, and some extra in-game currency rewards for users who update the app.

Zombie Farm is doing even better than that — the wacky cross between zombies and Farmville has earned 7.3 million downloads since launch, and is still growing at about 25% a month. Currently, the app’s reviews section is full of complaints about some bugs, but nevertheless, Playforge has claimed 2.76 billion minutes of playtime, and while it hasn’t shared actual revenue numbers, there’s no question that players have probably spent plenty of money on the game’s in-app purchases.

I would call both of those solid hits for sure. We’ll have to see what other big games rise to the top after this raucous holiday season on the App Store continues.

Sony announces official PlayStation app for iPhone

The European PlayStation site today announced an upcoming official PlayStation app for the iPhone and Android platforms. The first version of this app will allow you to check your PlayStation trophies, read your friends’ status updates, and keep up with news about the PlayStation console and its games. You’ll even be able to share your favorite products with your friends via social networks like Twitter and Facebook.

We don’t have word on a US version of the app yet, unfortunately, so until then, this is just for you folks in Europe. The app’s initial release will only be available in France, UK, Germany, Spain, Italy, and the Netherlands. Sony is already working on expanding the app to other countries; we’re obviously hopeful that it will reach the US.

iPad hits 50,000 apps in eight months

MacStories points out that according to the listings in the iTunes App Store, the iPad has reached an unofficial total of 50,000 apps in just the eight months since software started selling for the device. For comparison’s sake, the iPhone (which basically means the App Store in general, since that was the first device that could run Apple’s apps) hit that total right around the year mark, between July 2008 and 2009. iPad apps first went live in the App Store back in April of this year, and at the time, I noted that it was the best selection of original software for a hardware launch that I’d ever seen on any device — console manufacturers would love to have had the support that the iPad did when it launched. And that developer interest has continued — while I think we have seen the price drops that a lot of developers expected (though probably slower than was predicted), developers are still extremely interested in developing for the iPad itself, even inside of the iOS environment.

And as MacStories notes, this makes you wonder what the response will be to the Mac App Store when it launches early next year. In that case, we’ve got an established platform (remember, no one, not even most developers, had held an iPad in their hands when the apps on the App Store went live in April) with an existing software library that’s moving into a new venue, so it’ll be extremely interesting to see what happens, both from a developer perspective and as a consumer of Mac software. Maybe next May we’ll be talking about an even faster run to 50,000 apps for sale.

Apple, Microsoft, others acquire Novell patents for $450 million

Software company Novell recently had to reorganize after an acquisition by Attachmate, and as a result, a number of patents held by the company went up the air for grabs. Apple has decided to team with Microsoft, and picked up the patents along with a few other partners for $450 million. It’s not quite known what will happen with these, but the company formed by the partnership, CPTN Holdings LLC, now owns 882 patents originally filed by Novell. Filing papers show that this company was “a consortium organized by Microsoft,” so presumably the patents will simply be held by the company to protect certain technologies if necessary, or Microsoft and its partners (including Apple) will split them up according to some agreement.

This isn’t the only chunk of patents that Apple is looking to pick up — the bankrupt Nortel Networks is also trying to sell off a swath of 4,000 patents worth over $1 billion all together, and Apple is reportedly interested in buying at least a few of those. Microsoft and Google are also aiming to pick up some of Nortel’s patents.

And all of these patents are just more ammo in a few different ongoing lawsuits, between Apple and other cell phone manufacturers. At this point, we’re getting into a level of abstraction that seems pretty far removed from the reason patents were invented in the first place. But as long as Apple can gain an advantage by patenting as many technologies as possible and buying as many patents as it can, it’ll play the system as much as is legal.

Online Apple Store adds one-click "popular configurations" option

Just in time for those holiday orders, there’s been a small change in the online Apple Store’s build-to-order pages for the MacBook, MacBook Pro and MacBook Air. Dave “Eagle-Eye” Caolo spotted the addition of new one-click BTO configurations, which include free express shipping.

The new one-click buttons let you prefill the most popular options for your custom config, including such favorites as “more RAM,” “faster hard drive,” the matte screen for the 15″ MBP and pre-installed versions of iWork or Microsoft Office. Of course, you can still custom-configure from all the available options if you prefer.

You’ll see the new options in the US store after clicking Select on the laptop product page of your choice.

Apple patents CoverFlow-like spiral interface

Patently Apple has unearthed a new patent that shows off a CoverFlow-like interface for browsing icons or album covers, only instead of CoverFlow’s linear layout, this one organizes content in a spiral. We’ve seen rotating menus in Apple’s patents before, but this looks more involved. It’s described as a “receding spiral in a virtual 3D space,” and you would use your finger (so probably in an iOS interface) to spin the spiral around and browse through whatever you were looking for. There’s also a “V” shaped display listed, and users might even be able to reorganize icons or art in the display (while creating or sorting a playlist, for example).

A finger is explicitly shown in the patent, but presumably this would work with a mouse, or even a scrollwheel, as in the case of the non-touchscreen iPods. It’s definitely an intriguing idea, and adds a little more visual variety to browsing through various media or icons. As with all of these patents, there’s no guarantee that Apple will actually use this plan in a future product, but clearly someone in Cupertino is thinking about how to put a new spin on the CoverFlow interface.

Opera 11 for Mac debuts with tab stacking, gestures, extensions and more

Opera 11 for Mac is finally available with all sorts of cool features for you to play with, like “tab stacking,” mouse gesture support and extensions. Here’s an initial run-down of the major features available in Opera 11 for Mac.

Tab stacking is pretty cool. I’m “one of those” people who typically has a huge number of tabs open at once. Opera reinforces my bad habit by allowing me to drag tabs on top of one another, creating a pop-up window of all the tabs in a stack. Each window displays a thumbnail of its pages’ contents, and a click brings it forward.

The mouse gestures will take some getting used to. Click the right mouse button to bring up the gesture UI, a large circle featuring icons for common functions, like back, forward, stop and open in a new tab. Not having used it, I’ll guess that keyboard shortcuts are faster. Of course, I keep dozens of tabs open so what do I know?

Extensions work as you’d expect, adding additional functionality to your browsing experience. There’s more, of course, which you can read about here. We’ll have a more detailed look at Opera 11 for Mac soon. Until then, check out the brief promo video after the break.

Apple reportedly adds touch screen suppliers for iPad 2

To add to our growing stockpile of iPad 2 rumors, DigiTimes is reporting that Apple has added two new touch screen suppliers,
Chimei Innolux and Cando, with those shipments to begin in January or February. The article says that expected orders of the iPad 2 will be more than 6 million per month. This follows up the rumor that backlighting units were shipped to Chimei Innolux and LG Display.

DigiTimes brought us other iPad 2 rumors including additional parts suppliers and a camera supplier. Keep in mind that DigiTimes’ track record is hit-or-miss at times, but with the growing number of iPad 2 rumors, their spot-on record when it came to the iPhone 4 hardware and Apple’s normal updating pattern when it comes to the iPhone, it’s safe to say that some sort of hardware update will be announced in early 2011 — maybe in time to pre-order the perfect (but slightly late) Valentine’s Day gift.
