iOS 8 Jailbreak Status Update [8.0 – 8.0.2]

So, iOS 8 is out, and many are looking to jailbreak iOS 8 and iOS 8.0.2 already on their iPhones, iPads and iPod touches. Below, we look at the current state of play in an attempt to assess when one might come about.

With iOS 7, we were somewhat spoilt, with Evad3rs covering the earlier builds before Chinese team Pangu came through to jailbreak iOS 7.1 and up. But essentially, we’re back to square one, and as millions flock to download iOS 8, where do we stand?

iOS-8-Jailbreak-untethered

i0n1c, the German security researcher and perpetual jailbreaker, suggested that Apple hadn’t quite patched all of the exploits found in iOS 7.1.1 with the iOS 8 betas. What this means is, while Pangu won’t work for iOS 8, the jailbreak scene has a potential building block from which to produce yet another miracle. It all boils down to whether Apple has plugged the remainder of the holes with the final release of iOS 8, though, and until those in the know have had the chance to scrutinize it, we couldn’t possibly say either way.

The take-home here, folks, is that until the major forces in the jailbreak world have had a chance to assess the public release and henceforth offer their takes on the changes, we don’t really know the ifs, the hows or the whens of an iOS 8 untethered jailbreak.

Neither Evad3rs nor Pangu has been particularly vocal at this point, but given that the former includes several trusted, long-standing members of the community including Pod2g and MuscleNerd, here’s to hoping that we’ll have more information very soon.

It is important to note that if you update to iOS 8 today, you will lose your jailbreak that you have on iOS 7.x, and once signing window is closed for iOS 7.1.2, downgrading wont be possible. MuscleNerd also confirmed this a while ago:

post

So if you like your jailbreak, DO NOT update to iOS 8 yet as there is no jailbreak available for it.

With all the controversies that have afflicted jailbreakers in recent months — the latest of which was revealed only two days ago — it’s likely that many will have been scared off, but even though there’ll always be an element of risk in opening up what is essentially root access, there are also plenty of benefits to be reaped via Cydia.

Jailbreak untethered iOS 8.0 – 8.0.1 – 8.0.2 – 8.1

A long time to jailbreak iOS 8: the risk is there and it depends on Apple and its errors on the last firmware.

I fear that the jailbreak iOS 8 will have a long time: my rating comes from the observation of the activities of hackers post release of the first iOS 8 and as a counterpart, the moves fielding just from Cupertino to improve their firmware.

ios8-unlockcode

It is no coincidence that after compromising iOS 8.0.1 (now retired) and the disappointing iOS 8.0.2 is already talk of the launch of iOS 8.1 expected for October 20 to put an end to bugs and system errors recorded by many users and damaging to the reputation of the brand itself. The firmware is evolving and hackers are watching.

Probably, experts in the hunt for future jailbreak have decided not to put his hand in a serious way to iOS 8 for a very simple reason: in addition to the forthcoming iOS 8.1 have already been spotted traces of iOS 8.2 and 8.3 in the works at developers Cupertino. In short, the next firmware will be neither definitive nor lasting, thus better to wait for better times.

One thing to emphasize is: in any case, the future protagonists of jailbreak iOS will always be 8 or Evad3trs the group consisting of Pod2g, MuscleNerd, and Planetbeing Pimskeks or the Chinese team Pangu, the protagonist of the last jailbreak iOS 7.1.2. all the rest is nothing new or better behind so-called hacker at work you can conceal the numerous false experts, all eager for easy money.
Especially the United States, proliferate tool to jailbreak iOS 8: too bad they’re all paid with a per capita expenditure that goes from 20 to 30 dollars. for those approaching for the first time to the unlock procedure, note that downloading the tool has always been free thanks to the work of volunteer hackers. Things will not change at all now, then keep your eyes open.

How to saving battery Life On iOS 8

1. Turn Wi-Fi Auto-Search To Off

As something of an extension to the first tip, you can also prevent your device from searching for networks all the time, which is not only unnecessary – you can toggle it on via the Control Center when you do wish to connect to a hotspot – but also a strain on the battery.

Go to Settings > Wi-Fi > Ask to Join Networks and toggle to OFF.

2. See Which Apps Are Using The Most Battery

In iOS 8, Apple has made it possible for users to check battery use on an app-by-app basis. Thus, by navigating through Settings > General > Usage > Battery Usage, you can quickly determine which apps are using your battery up the most, and either use them less, or even delete them altogether.

3. Turn off Parallax

The Parallax feature first rolled out with iOS 7, and as well as proving a bit of a headache in the literal sense for some users initially, also warrants additional battery. To disable it, go Settings > General > Accessibility > Reduce Motion, and toggle to ON.

ios-8-battery-tips

4. Disable Background App Updates

Apps automatically updating to the latest version is seamless and all, but if you’re out and about and worried about keeping your device alive, having the latest version of Facebook installed becomes somewhat less important. To save battery, go to Settings > iTunes & App Store, and at the bottom, simply toggle Updates to OFF under Automatic Downloads.

5. Stop Backgrounded Apps From Refreshing

The great thing about disabling Background App Refresh is that it’s not all or nothing, so by going to Settings > General > Background App Refresh, you can pick and choose which you want to continue refreshing and which you’d like to kill off.

6. Location Services

Many apps unjustifiably ask to see your location, which is not only quite invasive, but when an app uses location services, it also dips into your battery life.

If you’re using, say, a navigation app, then obviously, Location Services are a must, but if not, Settings > Privacy > Location Services and remove those that you don’t feel need to know where you are.

7. Turn Off 4G LTE

It may be lightning quick, but 4G LTE is a battery hog, and if it’s not especially critical that you’re running a super-snappy connection, consider disabling 4G by going to Settings > Cellular > Enable LTE.

8. Disable Auto-Brightness & Dim Your Display

Auto-Brightness is self-explanatory in that it automatically brightens up your display, but the trade-off, as with many useful iOS 8 features, is that more battery is used than necessary.

In Settings > Display & Brightness, you can disable auto-brightness, and if you also turn the brightness down lower – as low as you can manage without it adversely affecting the experience – then you’ll save even more battery.

9. Disable Push Notifications For Certain Apps

Sure, being notified of that @mention or Facebook ‘Like’ is the be-all and end-all, but if you get any apps sending you push notifications that you tend to ignore, then head to Settings > Notifications, and under Include, toggle away.

10. Use Airplane Mode More

Although its probably critical that your iPhone is kept online at all times for obvious reasons, your iPad or iPod touch doesn’t need to be online when you’re, say, reading a book or watching a movie already downloaded to your device.

Airplane Mode is easily accessible from the Settings app or Control Center, and if you get yourself into the habit of utilizing it, you’ll be amazed by the additional time that your device remains powered up.

11. Disable System Services For Location

There are some background location services which take a toll on battery life without the user being known about it. Navigate to Settings > Privacy > Location Services > System Services and toggle off Location-Based Alerts, Location-Based iAds, Spotlight Suggestions, Wi-Fi Networking and Frequent Locations.

Note: you can toggle other services off too, but that might disable features for some apps, like Share My Location for Messages.

12. Disable Automatic Time Update

iOS keeps the device’s clock updated at all times, and in doing so, it uses your location, and hence takes its toll on battery life. To disable this feature, go to Settings > General > Date & Time and turn Set Automatically to OFF.

13. Turn Off Bluetooth

Bluetooth is turned on by default in iOS 8, and it’s a feature which can take its toll on battery life if kept on for no good reason. Simply slide up Control Center, and tap the Bluetooth icon to turn it off.

14. Disable Handoff & Suggested Apps

A killer iOS feature by a long shot, but a battery drainer nonetheless. Simply navigate to Settings > General > Handoff & Suggested Apps and turn every toggle OFF in the resulting page.

15. Disable AirDrop

It sounds like an awesome feature for quickly sharing stuff between iOS users, but it can be a battery hog when left running in the background.

Simply drag up from the bottom of the display to bring up Control Center and then tap on AirDrop and then tap on Off.

iOS 8.0.1 to Address Bugs With Phone, Keyboard, Videos in Safari, and More

Earlier this month, it was reported that Apple was preparing to seed carrier partners with iOS 8.0.1 even before the media event officially announcing launch dates for iOS 8 and the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. Details on the update were unknown at the time, but we noted that we’d seen a significant uptick in activity from devices running iOS 8.0.1 in recent weeks.

Web traffic from devices running iOS 8.0.1 on Apple’s networks peaked around the time of Apple’s media event before tailing off a bit, but Apple does indeed appear to have provided the update to carrier partners and MacRumors has received word from a source that the updates addresses several bugs present in the iOS 8 golden master version released to the public last week. Among the issues:

ios_8_icon

– Phone: Addresses bugs with call forwarding and freezing when accessing visual voicemail
– Keyboard: Fixes an issue with keypad not appearing to enter iCloud Keychain verification codes
– Safari: Fixes a problem with videos occasionally not playing
– Sharing: Fixes AirDrop support for Passbook passes
– VPN: Addresses an issue with installing VPN profiles

Beyond the documented fixes, iOS 8.0.1 will undoubtedly fix a number of other early users have been experiencing although it will likely still be several more minor updates before most of them can be addressed. A release date for iOS 8.0.1 is not yet known, but it could appear fairly soon given that it is already in the hands of partners for testing and approval.

Encryption in iOS 8 for iPhone and iPad Unlock Code

Apple is making it impossible for the company to turn over data from most iPhones or iPads to police — even when they have a search warrant — taking a hard new line as tech companies attempt to blunt allegations that they have too readily participated in government efforts to collect user data.

The move, announced with the publication of a new privacy policy tied to the release of Apple’s latest mobile operating system, iOS 8, amounts to an engineering solution to a legal quandary: Rather than comply with binding court orders, Apple has reworked its latest encryption in a way that makes it almost impossible for the company — or anyone but the device’s owner — to gain access to the vast troves of user data typically stored on smartphones or tablet computers.

ios8-unlockcode

The key is the encryption that Apple mobile devices automatically put in place when a user selects a passcode, making it difficult for anyone who lacks that passcode to access the information within, including photos, emails and recordings. Apple once kept possession of encryption keys that unlocked devices for legally binding police requests, but will no longer do so for iOS 8, it said in a new guide for law enforcement.

“Unlike our competitors, Apple cannot bypass your passcode and therefore cannot access this data,” Apple said on its website. “So it’s not technically feasible for us to respond to government warrants for the extraction of this data from devices in their possession running iOS 8.”

As the new operating system becomes widely deployed over the next several weeks, the number of iPhones and iPads that Apple is capable of breaking into for police will steadily dwindle to the point when only devices several years old — and incapable of running iOS 8 — can be cracked by Apple.

Apple will still have the ability — and the legal responsibility — to turn over user data stored elsewhere, such as in its iCloud service, which typically includes backups of photos, videos, email communications, music collections and more. Users who want to prevent all forms of police access to their information will have to adjust settings in a way that blocks data from flowing to iCloud.

Apple’s action comes less than five months after the Supreme Court ruled that police in most circumstances need a search warrant to collect to information stored on phones. Apple’s action makes that distinction largely moot by depriving itself of the power to comply with search warrants for the contents of many of the phones it sells.

The move is the latest in a series in which Apple has sought to distinguish itself from competitors through more rigorous security, especially in the aftermath of revelations about government spying made by former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden last year.

Though the company’s security took a publicity hit with the leak of intimate photos of celebrities from their Apple accounts in recent weeks, the move to block police access to the latest iPhones and iPads will thrill privacy activists and frustrate law enforcement officials, who have come to rely on the extensive evidence often found on personal electronic devices.

“This is a great move,” said Christopher Soghoian, principal technologist for the American Civil Liberties Union. “This seems to be the result of pressure because of the Snowden revelations. Apple seems to be putting user privacy ahead of many other things …There are going to be a lot of unhappy law enforcement officials.”

Ronald Hosko, the former head of the FBI’s criminal investigations division, called the move by Apple “problematic,” saying it will contribute to the steady decrease of law enforcement’s ability to collect key evidence, to solve crimes and prevent them. The agency long has publicly worried about the “going dark” problem, in which the rising use of encryption across a range of services has undermined government’s ability to conduct surveillance, even when it is legally authorised.

“Our ability to act on data that does exist … is critical to our success,” Hosko said. He suggested that it would take a major event, such as a terrorist attack, to cause the pendulum to swing back toward giving authorities access to a broad range of digital information.

Many security experts have blamed security weaknesses in iCloud — some of which have since been fixed — for the recent leak of celebrity photos. Several companies also make systems designed to crack the encryption of devices, including the iPhone and iPad. Security experts generally consider Apple’s devices to be better protected against such attacks than some rivals’, though people with short passcodes — of four digits, for example — are in greater danger of what are called “brute force attacks” that relentlessly try all possible combinations.

Adding more security can make it harder for users to operate a mobile device. People who forgets their passcodes with iOS 8 will not be able to recover them by contacting Apple. However, most users will have the bulk of their data automatically backed up on iCloud and would be able to restore their phones, though not before wiping them of all user data.
