Note: As a tradeoff for the very affordable price, ATHENA’s brain module (AKA, central logic engine) will be obfuscated PHP code because it incorporates algorithms that are copyrighted by us. Again, the core engine itself is a slimmed down version of an A.I. system we will license to large companies. But it is all you will ever need. PERFORMANCE NOTES

ATHENA has been fully tested to work on the cheapest shared hosting providers. We do recommend, though, that you use a VPS, a Dedicated Server, or professional PaaS like AppFog (although their MySQL setup is slightly different). Cheap shared hosting is sufficient but in our tests, things got sluggish when there were more than 8,000 database rows and more than 20-50 users using it concurrently. Remember, this bot is more geared towards specialized conversations and virtual assisting. If you plan to unload the entire English dictionary into its databases, well, you better have a very expensive server for that! Hopefully by then you’ll be making so much money, it wouldn’t matter

There were a few commenters who had concerns about the practicality of teaching the bot many lines of phrases and words and if it can really clone the functions of the popular apps like Siri. I copy/paste my response here:

At this point in the industry, ALL conversational bots have lots of lines stored in their databases. It is impossible at this current stage of NLP, machine learning, and AI research for any bot to be able to really “understand” meanings of words like us humans do and form their own sentences. Many advanced bots have had to data mine and process millions of phrases, some have had to remember the entire dictionary.

This script was not made for someone who is doing advanced research or create the next great NLP algorithm. It was not made for scientists or even typical academics. It was made for developers/entrepreneurs/start up founders who just want the basic functionality of 1) Having a bot that can hold a conversation in the way the developer wants it to and 2) Have the bot execute custom code when the user shouts commands.

According to this wikipedia page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siri_%28Software%29), Siri has relied external services such as: OpenTable, Gayot, CitySearch, BooRah, Yelp, Yahoo Local, Yandex, ReserveTravel, Localeze, Eventful, StubHub, and LiveKick, MovieTickets, Rotten Tomatoes, Bing Answers, Wolfram Alph, Evi, Bing, Yahoo, and Google.

You can easily clone that functionality with this script.

For example, in the file /inc/custom.php, you can easily add a trigger such as “reserve my table at Restaurant ABC..” and in that block, you would add custom code that triggers OpenTable API, and then echo out the response. You would need to add custom parsing functions to it though.
