In this tutorial you will learn how to create 3D phone model by combining most popular 3D techniques that exist inside After Effects.
Since it’s a real 3D object you’re able to rotate it 360 degrees in all directions, move it around in 3D space and make it interact with lights and camera to create shadows and achieve Depth Of Field (DOF) effect. We will also create separate placeholder comp for screen so you can easily replace it with your media and use the screen to display whatever you want – photos, videos, logo and so on.
No third party images are used. All elements are created inside After Effects. In this tutorial you’ll learn how to build them all. This include cameras, mic, speaker, connection sockets, buttons, plastic and metal parts.
We will use Expressions and Expression controls to link it all together and make it easy to adjust the parameters later for extrusion, light amount and light direction.
After Effects CS3 Project file is included. If you find it hard to follow or lost at some point – you can explore the project file that I created. This is a universal project that can be reused again and again in your own projects.
Tutorial consists of 5 parts. Over one hour (1:20:00) total learning time.
- 1: Create the phone elements
- 2: Set Up Expressions and build the 3D phone
- 3: Create side buttons and connection sockets
- 4: Set up 3D environment
- 5: Create Animation example

I tried to make this tutorial as simple as possible so even a beginner could follow. However those techniques can achieve a high quality result. If you’re a professional Motion Graphics artist – this tutorial might teach you some new techniques as well.
