Snapheal
Taking perfect photos can be difficult, especially with scenes that are constantly changing. Sometimes the picture is filled with people or objects in the background. If you have Photoshop, removing this clutter is easy using the clone stamping or healing brush tools. But if you didn’t want to spend that much on a piece of fancy software, there’s always Snapheal. It makes removing objects easy and doubles as a full image editor with less complication, making it a great user-friendly alternative to Photoshop, Pixelmator, Gimp, and other software. Our own Julia Altermann reviewed it at the beginning of the year, giving it 9/10. For $7.99, it’s a must-have.

Air Hockey
Once an iOS game, this computer version of air hockey is controlled by the mouse moving about and hitting the puck. It’s a quality game with lots of difficulty levels and challenges. If you’re one for old arcade games or like air hockey, this is definitely worth picking up while it’s free.

Carousel
Instagram has been a mobile-centered service ever since its launch in 2010. There is a way to browse and comment on photos using the Web app on a computer, but it’s not native. For Mac users, Mobelux developed Carousel, an aesthetically fine way to browse Instagram. It was $4.99 at first, then it went to $2.99, and now it’s on sale for only $1.99. If you’re skeptical, consider reading Jorge Rodriguez’s review, published in June 2011, for a deeper look at the app. He gave it 9/10 which should tell you that it’s nothing short of a great app, especially at less than half the price it was then.

Recipes
Ever wanted to organize all your digital recipes, from Microsoft Word documents to plain text files? Michael Göbel’s Recipes is the perfect piece of software for the job. It lets you add images, difficulty, ratings, and a lot of other information to your recipes that are synced to iCloud. There’s also an iOS app set to release sometime soon. I reviewed this app a month back and gave it 8/10. It was great, but the price was steep for what it offered at the time. For 99 cents though, I’d highly recommend it to all chefs (and wannabe chefs).

Writa
Minimal writing apps have become ubiquitous lately. The best ones are Byword and iA Writer, depending on personal preference, and anything else is typically pushed aside. But there is one interesting app called Writa. It includes backgrounds for writing (several themes are available and they all have a smooth appearance), shows the word and character count in the bottom right of the window, and has a few layout options available. There’s nothing special about this app — others offer backgrounds as well — but it’s worth looking at if you haven’t yet invested in a distraction-free writing system.
