I’d like to say thanks to you, dear reader, for your continued interest in my writing over the past year. I posted a blog retrospective in late 2011, giving traffic stats and listing the most popular posts of the year, and I thought it would be interesting to (slightly belatedly) do so again, for 2012.
Readership, whilst still modest, has been growing healthily since the last time I shared statistics, and I’m grateful that people are continuing to find value in the words I publish here. Here’s the latest graph of visitors, unique visitors, and pageviews for the years 2007-2012 inclusive.
(The graph is clickable to visit the original on Flickr, which includes a textual summary of the data for those who can’t see the graph itself.)
This blog isn’t the only place you’ll find my writing: I regularly write guest pieces for tech-industry magazines, and I’ve had a monthly column in Tap! magazine since the very first issue two and a half years ago.
I’ve also had the privilege of having pieces published in each of the first two issues of The Loop Magazine, and I’m very keen to write more in the future.
Here are some of the most successful articles I wrote during 2012, in no particular order.
- Augmented Paper – A discussion of an increasingly-prevalent UX aesthetic that appeals to me on touch-screen devices.
- API Design – My years of experience in creating reusable code-components distilled into 25 rules.
- Closed for Business – Open platforms don’t work for commercial success. Closed is where the smart developer money is.
- Managing Email Realistically – Your fancy email-filing system won’t work. Be ruthless instead.
- Morality and Persecution – A response to Pope Benedict XVI’s appalling condemnation of homosexuality.
- Replying to App Store reviews – Why it would be a bad idea for Apple to let developers reply to App Store reviews.
- Releasing Outside the App Store – How to release Mac apps outside the App Store, complete with updates, licenses and payments.
- Familiar is not a design – Thoughts on a misguided concept for layered window management on iPad.
- Misogyny – A condemnation of our continuing discrimination and sexism towards women.
- How Designers Can Help Developers – Tips on how designers can help app and web developers, including practising good Photoshop hygiene. (I also wrote a piece from the opposite perspective: How Developers Can Help Designers.)
I’m just a few months away from this blog’s ninth anniversary, which is quite a milestone. I get a great deal of satisfaction from writing here, and I hope to continue for a long time to come.
