Here’s an excellent free tool called Shoebox from Hendrik-Jan Schoenmaker for game developers that makes 2D game development easier providing a number of game and user interface tools.
My favorite tool in the Shoebox is one that lets you easily create Bitmap fonts within Photoshop with the accompanying fnt file that works with Cocos2D, Sparrow and Starling frameworks iOS game engines.
Here’s a video showing how it works (it’s actually a bit easier than that as you can just hit image->reveal all in Photoshop to extend the canvas size to hold all the letters):
Some of the other excellent tools include:
– A spritesheet creator that can turn gifs, SWF files or PNGs into a texture atlas or spritesheet with the Cocos2d, Starling Sparrow, or Unity3D UIToolkit and NGUI defintions
– A tool that can turn a sprite sheet into a set of separate images
– A tool that can turn a game screenshot to a set of tiles that can be used wthin the Tiled editor
– A tool to turn your UI images into Slice 9 images
You can download Shoebox and find full instructions on the homepage here.
An excellent free tool for 2D iOS game development you’ll find videos outlining how to use all the features on the home page.
