While you can’t change the default keyboard shown on iOS devices there are a number of apps that extend the keyboard by adding a row of custom keys.
Recently I came across a very clever open source iPad control that allows you to implement a row of custom keys at the top of the keyboard adding a number of “gesture keys” that allow a single key to be used for 5 different characters or symbols.
Also included are a tab key, and my favorite key an extremely useful navigation key that you can press that allows you to easily and accurately slide the cursor around.
Here’s an image of the custom keys in place:
You can find the open source component on Github here.
This component is part of the Kodiak PHP editor app. You can find the Kodiak PHP app on the App store here.
A very useful extension for the iPad keyboard great for any apps where you expect the user to do a lot of typing.
