Open Source iOS Library For Creating A Zoomable Interactive 3D Globe

Globe components are useful within all kinds of apps, and some time ago I mentioned the open source WhirlyGlobe 3D interactive globe component that provides an interactive 3D globe along with the ability to add overlays to specific areas.

Recently I came across a different type of globe component known as Earth View that allows you to create a full 3D height mapped globe that uses Tile Map Service standard tiles and uses GLKit to render the map.

There were a few major issues when I initially found this library, but it looks like the components creator, Ross Anderson, has already cleared them up.

Included is a sample application in which you can zoom around.

Here’s a screenshot from the included example application showing the mountainous area around Vancouver, BC Canada:Shot Of Vancouver Using Earth View Library On iPad

Here’s a quick video of Earth View in action on the iPad:

Note: I’ve sped up the video considerably.

You can download the library and more details on Github here.

An interesting component – there are a few issues, but with some performance tweaking this could turn out to be a very useful library.
