Open Source Cocos2D Based Framework For Creating Highly Interactive iPad Books

Often I receive questions about creating interactive books, and in the past I’ve pointed to some open source libraries for simple ebooks by taking PDF files or images and turning them into eBook apps.

Apple has also released iBook author tool which is a terrific iPad book creation tool, but requires you to sell your books through the iBooks platform rather than as apps in the App Store.

Today I came across an excellent library called iDiary from the Inka Research Group that utilizes the Cocos2D platform, and makes it easier to create interactive books with a number of features including the ability to include video, audio, moveable text, quizzes, physical objects, action games and more within your book.

Here’s a video demonstrating some of the functionality using the included sample application:

You can download the library from Github here, and documentation can be found in the Wiki.

A discussion about the framework can be found in the Cocos2D forum.

I’m really looking forward to giving this framework a more in-depth look.
