iPhone Game Friday: New Releases

Can you believe it’s March already? With any luck, we can wave farewell to winter again soon, but in the meantime we’ve got another round of games to recommend from the App Store.

Get your game on after the jump…

Lume

Lume

Though it’s new to the iOS App Store, Lume was actually first launched on PC. Now, one year later, Lume debuts on our favourite phones to the delight of its fans and newcomers alike.

Distinctive art sets it apart immediately, but there’s more than visual candy on offer. Lume is a puzzle game, and a fine one at that. Since this is only the first of several forthcoming episodes, you’ll probably find that you can blaze through the game quickly, but the design encourages patience, and the point-and-click adventure style navigation gives you plenty of opportunity to appreciate the wonderful little world in which the story takes place.

Playing as Lume on your phone is rewarding and frustrating in equal measure. Not because of any flaw in the port, but because of the decision to make this first installment so short. As it stands, future episodes may or may not be paid updates, so we’ll have to wait and see, but in the meantime the experience of Lume — however brief — is one worth having.

Munch Time

Munch Time

In case you’ve been lacking sufficient doses of cuteness lately, I’m happy to alleviate your condition with a game called Munch Time. There are flowers and a chameleon, so you can expect plenty of “awwwws.”

Gameplay is surprisingly clever in this puzzler though; you play as a chameleon who must swing around various flowers to grab stars on your way to the slug at the end. The catch is that different coloured flowers respond differently to your tongue, so you’ll have to master the various effects over the course of the game’s current 40 levels. Oh, and you can’t control colour changes yourself: you’ll need to snatch the appropriately coloured fly out of the air before you can progress.

Munch Time is effortlessly adorable and represents a fine entry alongside other colourful, kid-oriented puzzle games that have been so popular on the App Store. An easy recommendation, and one we hope will see many updates over the coming weeks!

Ironworm

Ironworm

Ironworm is an odd little beastie, and that’s a compliment. Taking place at the culmination of a long-time war between bugs, you play as Ironworm and you must beat some serious bug butt as you advance on your evil nemesis.

Gameplay is an interesting blend of action and puzzle, with many enemies that you need to find clever ways of dispatching with your spiked tail. There’s a charming comic book vibe to the whole affair, right down to the amusing text pop-ups when you hit things (“PWN,” “THOOM,” etc.)

10tons have done a terrific job polishing this title, and there is a lot of potential built in for seriously cool expansions once we all beat the initial levels. Don’t miss Ironworm, it’s a quirky diversion.

Mighty Mouse My Hero

MIGHTY MOUSE My Hero

If you’re up for some nostalgia, then you might want to have a look at MIGHTY MOUSE My Hero, from CBS Interactive. This familiar character from the cartoon days of yore now has his very own iOS game, and it happens to be a very fun one!

Somewhere between Jetpack Joyride and a more typical level-based endless runner, this game has you flying through three worlds punching enemies and soaring nimbly around obstacles while you seek your kidnapped love, Pearl. Earning cheese rewards gives you a chance to collect useful power-ups and unlock some fun extra costumes, and while cheese is available as an in-app purchase, the game is fair enough that you won’t feel it’s required.

By no means a pushover game, MIGHTY MOUSE My Hero is a vibrant and addictive game that will usher your imagination back to a younger time.

Requiem: Unleashed

Requiem: Unleashed

Originally developed and distributed solely by Tribase Studios, Requiem has always been a benchmark for good running games. This refreshed version, Requiem: Unleashed, is an overhaul featuring improved graphics, controls and some new level design work.

Whether you’re approaching the game as a fan or a newcomer, it’s easy to find yourself gripped by this chilling nightmare simulator. You play as a young boy, fleeing from a demon bull in what must be a very tiring dream. Each level forces you to chase desperately through otherworldly environments toward a unicorn at the end that takes you to safety.

The levels themselves are notable because of the profusion of items, obstacles, and falling walls that will impede your progress. It’s a true test of reflexes as you get further in, and you may be forced to decide between dipping to the side to collect a special item that may unlock a bonus level, or staying the course and winning yourself some breathing space from the angry bull. Either way, it’s a tense and rewarding game that’s benefited tremendously from this reboot.
