How to Create a Beer Text Effect in Adobe Photoshop

In this tutorial I will show you how to create a beer text effect in Adobe Photoshop using layer styles, brushes, filters, and clipping masks. 

For this tutorial, I chose the word “PROSIT!”, a German word which means “Cheers!” in English.

Tutorial Assets

The following assets were used during the production of this tutorial:

1. How to Set the Background

Step 1

Open Photoshop, go to File > New and set these preset details:

  • Width: 850 px
  • Height: 500 px
  • Resolution: 72 px/inch
  • Color mode: RGB Color 8 bit

Click on Create.

Go to File > Place Embedded…, and choose wooden-floor-with-blurred-cafe-background.jpg. Check Maintain aspect ratio and Set horizontal scale to 90%. Then move this image with your mouse so that its right and bottom edges intersect with the right and bottom edges of the document. Hit Enter to place the image.

Step 3

Go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Curves and hit OK. In the layer Properties window, check Edit points to modify the curve and then click anywhere near the diagonal white line to create a new point. For this point, set Input: 78 and Output: 12. Then click inside there again to create the second point. Set the second point to Input: 216 and Output: 163.

Step 4

Go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Hue/Saturation… and then hit OK. In the layer Properties window set these values:

  • Hue: +3
  • Saturation: -56
  • Lightness: +5

Select the Hue/Saturation 1 layer, hold Shift and click the wooden-floor-with-blurred-cafe layer to select all three layers, and then hit Control-G to make a group of these layers.

2. How to Install the Brushes and Pattern

Step 1

Go to Edit > Presets > Preset Manager… In the Preset Type, select Brushes, click Load…, and choose bubbles-and-foam-brushes.abr.

Go to Edit > Presets > Preset Manager… In the Preset Type, select Patterns, click Load…, and choose the foam-noise.pat.

3. How to Create Text Layers

Step 1

Pick the Type Tool (T) and write “PROSIT!” Choose the Poetsen One font, and then go to Window > Character and set the font Size to 240 pt and Tracking to -60.

Go to Layer > Duplicate Layer…,name it Shadow, and hit OK. To move this layer under the PROSIT! layer, go to Layer > Arrange > Send Backward.

4. How to Style a Text Layer

Step 1

Select the “PROSIT!” layer and go to Layer > Layer Style > Blending Options… to apply the following layer style.

Add a Bevel and Emboss with these settings:

  • Style: Inner Bevel
  • Technique: Smooth
  • Depth: 55%
  • Direction: Down
  • Size: 13 px
  • Uncheck the Use Global Light box
  • Angle: -170
  • Altitude: 32
  • Gloss Contour: Rolling Slope – Descending
  • Check the Anti-aliased box
  • Highlight Mode: Screen #ffffff and Opacity: 69%
  • Shadow Mode: Screen #ffffff and Opacity: 85%

Step 2

Add a Contour with these settings:

  • Gloss Contour: Rolling Slope – Descending
  • Check the Anti-aliased box
  • Range: 100%

Add an Inner Shadow with these settings:

  • Blend Mode: Color Burn #000000 
  • Opacity: 50%
  • Uncheck the Use Global Light box
  • Angle: -90
  • Distance: 0 px
  • Choke: 0 px
  • Size: 32 px
  • Check the Anti-aliased box

Step 4

Add an Inner Glow with these settings:

  • Blending Mode: Color Dodge #ffc600
  • Opacity: 21%
  • Technique: Precise
  • Source: Center
  • Choke: 0 %
  • Size: 27 px
  • Check the Anti-aliased box
  • Range: 49%

Add a Gradient Overlay with these settings:

  • Blend Mode: Normal
  • Opacity: 100%
  • Style: Linear
  • Angle: 90
  • Scale: 100%
  • Click on the Gradient and set these color stops:
  • Color stop 1 – Color: #b2710b Location: 0%
  • Color stop 2 – Color: #dca010 Location: 25%
  • Color stop 3 – Color: #dfb031 Location: 53%
  • Color stop 4 – Color: #c77f0d Location: 80%

Hit the OK button.

Step 6

Go to Layer > Smart Object > Convert to Smart Object and then go to Layer > Layer Style > Blending Options… In the Blending Options, set the Fill Opacity to 90% and hit the OK button.

This will create the main beer text effect layer.

5. How to Create a Cast Shadow

Step 1

Select “Shadow” layer and go to Layer > Layer Style > Blending Options… to apply the following layer style.

In Blending Options, set the Fill Opacity to 0%.

Add a Gradient Overlay with these settings:

  • Blend Mode: Normal
  • Check the Dither box
  • Opacity: 100%
  • Style: Linear
  • Angle: -90
  • Scale: 100%
  • Click on the Gradient and set these color and opacity stops:
  • Color stop 1 – Color: #000000 Location: 0%
  • Opacity stop 1 – Opacity: 0% Location: 0%
  • Color stop 2 – Color: #000000 Location: 100%
  • Opacity stop 2 – Opacity: 100% Location: 100%

Hit the OK button.

Step 3

Right-click the “Shadow” layer and choose Convert to Smart Object. Then go to Edit > Transform > Skew and Set vertical scale to 50%. Drag the top center anchor point to around -40° and hit Enter

Select the Move Tool (V) and then use your arrow keys to move the shadow as shown in the picture below.

Go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur…, set the Radius to 2.6 px, and then hit OK.

Go to Layer > Layer Style > Blending Options… and set the Fill Opacity to 75%. Hit OK.

This will create a cast shadow for your text.

6. How to Create the First Texture of the Beer

Step 1

Select the “PROSIT!” layer and go to Layer > New Fill Layer > Solid Color…. Name the layer Texture 1 and check the Use Previous Layer to Create Clipping Mask box, and then hit OK and select black color. Hit OK again.

Go to Filter > Pixelate > Pointillize…, select Convert To Smart Object, and then set the Cell Size to 9. Hit OK.

Go to Layer > Layer Style > Blending Options…, set the Blend Mode to Lighten and Fill Opacity to 10%, and then hit OK.

This will create the first subtle texture of the beer.

7. How to Create the Second Texture of the Beer

Step 1

Select the “Texture 1” layer and go to Layer > New Fill Layer > Solid Color…. Name the layer Texture 2 and check the Use Previous Layer to Create Clipping Mask box, and then hit OK and select black color. Hit OK again.

Go to Filter > Pixelate > Mezzotint…, select Convert To Smart Object, and then set the Type to Coarse Dots. Hit OK.

Go to Layer > Layer Style > Blending Options…, set the Blend Mode to Soft Light and Fill Opacity to 20%, and then hit OK.

This will create the second subtle texture of the beer.

8. How to Create the Third Texture of the Beer

Step 1

Select the “Texture 2” layer and go to Layer > New Fill Layer > Solid Color…. Name the layer Texture 3 and check the Use Previous Layer to Create Clipping Mask box, and then hit OK and select black color. Hit OK again.

Go to Filter > Pixelate > Mezzotint…, select Convert To Smart Object and then set the Type to Fine Dots. Hit OK.

Go to Layer > Layer Style > Blending Options…, set the Blend Mode to Soft Light and Fill Opacity to 20%, and then hit OK.

This will create the third subtle texture of the beer.

9. How to Create Big Bubbles With a Custom Brush

Step 1

Select the “Texture 3” layer and go to Layer > New > Layer…. Name the layer Big Bubbles and check the Use Previous Layer to Create Clipping Mask box, and then hit OK.

Go to your brushes (Window > Brushes) and select the Bubbles – big brush.

Brush over the text to create a similar density of bubbles as in the picture below. You can come back to this layer and add more bubbles at any time.

Go to Layer > Layer Style > Blending Options… to apply the following layer styles.

In Blending Options, set the Fill Opacity to 0%.

Add a Bevel and Emboss with these settings:

  • Style: Inner Bevel
  • Technique: Smooth
  • Depth: 240%
  • Direction: Up
  • Size: 6 px
  • Uncheck the Use Global Light box
  • Angle: -90
  • Altitude: 60
  • Gloss Contour: Cone – Inverted
  • Check the Anti-aliased box
  • Highlight Mode: Screen with white color
  • Highlight Opacity: 43%
  • Shadow Mode: Soft Light with black color
  • Shadow Opacity: 32%

Add a Contour with these settings:

  • Gloss Contour: Cone – Inverted
  • Check the Anti-aliased box
  • Range: 100%

  • Blend Mode: Color Dodge
  • Opacity: 50%
  • Color: white
  • Technique: Softer
  • Source: Center
  • Size: 13 px

Hit OK to apply the layer style.

10. How to Create Small Bubbles With a Custom Brush

Step 1

Select the “Big Bubbles” layer and go to Layer > New > Layer…. Name the layer Small Bubbles and check the Use Previous Layer to Create Clipping Mask box, and then hit OK.

Go to your brushes (Window > Brushes) and select the Bubbles – small brush.

Brush over the text to create a similar density of
bubbles as in the picture below. You can come back to this layer and add
more bubbles at any time.

Go to Layer > Layer Style > Blending Options… to apply the following layer styles.

In Blending Options, set the Fill Opacity to 0%.

  • Style: Inner Bevel

  • Direction: Up
  • Size: 7 px
  • Uncheck the Use Global Light box
  • Angle: 90
  • Altitude: 30
  • Gloss Contour: Cone – Inverted
  • Check the Anti-aliased box
  • Highlight Mode: Screen with white color
  • Highlight Opacity: 43%
  • Shadow Mode: Soft Light with black color
  • Shadow Opacity: 32%

Add a Contour with these settings:

  • Gloss Contour: Cone – Inverted
  • Check the Anti-aliased box
  • Range: 100%

11. How to Create a Beer Foam

Step 1

Pick the Rectangle Tool, set the Fill to white color, and draw a rectangle over the top part of the text. I have lowered the opacity of the rectangle to show you how much of the text I covered. Your rectangle should be solid white.

Go to Filter > Distort > Wave…, select the Convert To Smart Object button, and use these settings:

  • Number of Generators: 5
  • Wavelength: Min. 10 Max. 60
  • Amplitude: Min. 2 Max. 6
  • Scale: H. 100% V. 100%
  • Type: Sine
  • Undefined Areas: Repeat Edge Pixels

Hit OK.

Step 3

While the rectangle layer is selected, Control-click the “PROSIT!” layer to make a selection, and then go to Layer > Layer Mask > Reveal Selection.

Right-click the rectangle layer and choose Convert to Smart Object.

Go to Layer > New > Layer…, name the layer Foam, and then hit OK.

While the “Foam” layer is selected, Control-click the Rectangle layer to make a selection, and then go to Paths panel (Window > Paths) and click on the Make workpath from selection icon.

Go to your brushes (Window > Brushes) and select the Foam brush.

Right-click on the Work Path and select Stroke Path…. Select Tool: Brush and hit OK.

Hold Control and select the Foam and the Rectangle layer, and then Right-click the Foam layer and choose Convert to Smart Object.

Go to Layer > Duplicate Layer… and duplicate the Foam layer as Foam shadow. Hit OK.

While the “Foam shadow” layer is selected, Control-click the “PROSIT!” layer to make a selection, and then go to Layer > Layer Mask > Reveal Selection.

Send the “Foam shadow” layer backward. To do so, go to Layer > Arrange > Send Backward.

12. How to Style the Beer Foam

Step 1

Select the “Foam shadow” layer and go to Layer > Layer Style > Blending Options… to apply the following layer styles.

In Blending Options, set the Fill Opacity to 0% and check the Layer Mask Hides Effects box.

Add a Drop Shadow with these settings:

  • Blend Mode: Linear Burn with black color
  • Opacity: 8%
  • Uncheck the Use Global Light box
  • Angle: 90
  • Distance: 2 px
  • Size: 4 px
  • Contour: Gaussian
  • Check the Anti-aliased box

Hit OK to apply the layer style.

Step 3

Select the “Foam” layer and go to Layer > Layer Style > Blending Options… to apply the following layer styles.

Add a Bevel and Emboss with these settings:

  • Style: Inner Bevel
  • Technique: Smooth
  • Depth: 150%
  • Direction: Up
  • Size: 29 px
  • Soften: 4 px
  • Uncheck the Use Global Light box
  • Angle: 90
  • Altitude: 30
  • Check the Anti-aliased box
  • Highlight Mode: Screen with white color
  • Highlight Opacity: 100%
  • Shadow Mode: Linear Burn with black color
  • Shadow Opacity: 10%

  • Blend Mode: Linear Burn with black color
  • Opacity: 15%
  • Uncheck the Use Global Light box
  • Angle: -90
  • Distance: 5 px
  • Size: 7 px

  • Pattern: Foam noise

Right-click on the “Foam” layer and choose Convert to Smart Object. This will create the texture and the shadow of the foam.

13. How to Create the Beer Foam Bubbles

Step 1

Select the “Foam” layer and go to Layer > New > Layer…. Name the layer Foam bubbles and check the Use Previous Layer to Create Clipping Mask box, and then hit OK.
