Create a Chemistry Tubes Text Effect in Adobe Illustrator

In the following steps you will learn how to create a chemistry tubes text effect in Adobe Illustrator. For starters you will learn how to setup a grid and how to create a simply piece of text. Using basic tools and effects along with the Snap to Grid feature you will learn how to create the main shape. Moving on you will learn how to add subtle shading and highlights using the Appearance panel, build-in patterns plus some basic blending and vector shape building techniques. Finally, you will learn how to create a nice, textured background.


1. Create a New Document and Set Up a Grid

Hit Control-N to create a new document. Select Pixels from the Units drop-down menu, enter 925 in the width box and 335 in the height box then click on the Advanced button. Select RGB, Screen (72ppi) and make sure that the Align New Objects to Pixel Grid box is unchecked before you click OK.

Enable the Grid (View > Show Grid) and the Snap to Grid (View > Snap to Grid). For starters you will need a grid every 5px, so simply go to Edit > Preferences > Guides > Grid, enter 5 in the Gridline every box and 1 in the Subdivisions box. You should also open the Info panel (Window > Info) for a live preview with the size and position of your shapes. Do not forget to set the unit of measurement to pixels from Edit > Preferences > Units > General. All these options will significantly increase your work speed.

2. Create the Main Shape

Step 1

Focus on your Toolbar, remove the color from the stroke then select the fill and set its color at black (R=0 G=0 B=0). Grab the Type Tool (T), simply click on your artboard and add the "EXPERIMENT" piece of text. Make sure that it stays selected, open the Character panel (Window > Type > Character), select the Agency FB font, set the size at 150pt and the tracking at 100.

Move to the Transparency panel (Window > Transparency) and simply lower the Opacity of your text to 30%. Switch to the Selection Tool (V) and move your piece of text a little, just so it snaps to the grid as shown in the following image. Finally, go to the Layers panel (Window > Layers) and simply lock your text to make sure that you won’t accidentally select/move it..

Step 2

Pick the Pen Tool (P) and create a simple path as shown in the following image. This will make up the first letter from your "EXPERIMENT". Keep focusing on this new path, make sure that there is no color set for the fill then add a 10pt Stroke Weight and set its color at R=38 G=34 B=98.

Keep focusing on your little path and extend it as shown in the following image. Simply add the rest of the letters. You might have to use your imagination if you choose to use a different word, but keep in mind that there should be a 30px gap between each letter and a 10px gap between the adjacent paths that make up a certain letter. Also, try to use the locked text in the back as a rough reference. The grid and the Snap to Grid feature will also ease your work.

Move to the Layers panel and simply remove that locked piece of text. Keep focusing on your path and add several new anchor points as shown in the first image. Once again, the Snap to Grid will ease your work. Make sure that your path is still selected and go to Effect > Stylize > Rounded Corners. Enter a 10px Radius, click OK and go to Object > Path > Outline Stroke.

Using the Ellipse Tool (L), create a 45px circle, set the fill color at R=38 G=34 B=98 and place it as shown in the first image. Continue with the Ellipse Tool (L), create two, 50px circles, use the same fill color and place them as shown in the second image.

Select all the shapes made so far, open the Pathfinder panel (Window > Pathfinder) and click the Unite button. Move to the Layers panel, simply double-click on the existing shape and name it "main". This should make it easier for you to find later.

3. Create the Blue and the Orange Liquid

Step 1

Select your "main" shape and go to Object > Path > Offset Path. Enter a -1px Offset and click OK. Make sure that the resulting shape is selected and replace the existing fill color with R=57 G=181 B=74.

Using the Pen Tool (P), create a vertical path and three horizontal paths as shown in the following image. Add a 1pt, red stroke for these little paths to make them easier to notice.

Reselect the four paths with the red stroke along with the green shape and click the Divide button from the Pathfinder panel. Make sure that the resulting group of shapes is selected and simply hit Shift-Control-G to Ungroup it.

Moving to the Layers panel and among the green shapes you will find a path with no color set for the fill or the stroke. Select it and simply hit the Delete button from your keyboard to get rid of it.

Select the green shape highlighted in the first image and simply replace the existing fill color with R=40 G=170 B=225.

Select the green shape highlighted in the first image and simply replace the existing fill color with R=255 G=148 B=0.

Select the remaining green shapes and simply remove them using the Delete button from your keyboard.

Select your blue shape and open the Appearance panel (Window > Appearance). Make sure that the existing fill is selected and go to Effect > Stylize > Inner Glow. Enter the properties shown in the following image, click OK and go to Effect > Stylize > Outer Glow. Enter the attributes shown below and click OK.

Make sure that your blue shape is still selected, focus on the Appearance panel and add a second fill using the Add New Fill button (pointed by the little, blue arrow in the following image). You will need a built-in pattern for this new fill.

Go to the Swatches panel (Window > Swatches), open the fly-out menu and go to Open Swatch Library > Patterns > Basic Graphics > Basic Graphics_Textures. A new window with a set of built-in patterns should open. Make sure that your second fill is still selected, add the “USGS 22 Gravel Beach” pattern, change the Blending Mode to Color Dodge and go to Effect > Path > Offset Path. Enter a -3px Offset and click OK.

Makes sure that your blue shape is still selected and focus on the Appearance panel. Select the fill with the pattern and simply duplicate it using the Duplicate Selected Item button (pointed by the little, blue arrow in the following image).

For this step you will need a grid every 1px, so go to Edit > Preferences > Guides & Grid and enter 1 in the Gridline every box. Using the Ellipse Tool (L), create a 46 x 6 px shape and place it as shown in the following image. Make sure that this squeezed circle stays selected, open the Gradient panel (Window > Gradient) and simply click on the gradient thumbnail to add the default black to white linear gradient.

Keep focusing on your Gradient panel, set the Angle at 90 degrees then move to the gradient colors. Select the right slider and set the color at R=22 G=134 B=212 then select the left slider and set the color at R=40 G=170 B=225. Make sure that the shape made in this step is still selected and go to Effect > Stylize > Drop Shadow. Enter the properties shown in the following image and click OK.

Using the Ellipse Tool (L), create a 2 x 8px shape, set the fill color at R=22 G=134 B=212, place it as shown in the following image and go to Effect > Stylize > Drop Shadow. Enter the properties shown below and click OK.

Using the Ellipse Tool (L), create a bunch of 3px, 2px and 1px circles, set their fill color at R=119 G=229 B=255 and place them roughly as shown in the following images.

Make sure that the Ellipse Tool (L) is still active and create some new tiny circles as shown in the following image. Use the same fill color (R=119 G=229 B=255). Reselect all the shapes that make up the blue liquid and simply hit Control-G to Group them. Move to the Layers panel, double-click on this new group and simply name it "blueLiquid".

Return to “gridline every 5px “, so simply go to Edit > Preferences > Guides & Grid and enter 5 in the Gridline every box. Select your orange shape and focus on the Appearance panel. Make sure that the existing fill is selected and go to Effect > Stylize > Inner Glow. Enter the properties shown in the following image, click OK and go to Effect > Stylize > Outer Glow. Enter the attributes shown below and click OK.

Make sure that your orange shape is still selected, focus on the Appearance panel and add a second fill using that same Add New Fill button. Select this new fill, change its Blending Mode to Color Dodge, add that "USGS 22 Gravel Beach" pattern and go to Effect > Path > Offset Path. Enter a -3px Offset and click OK. Return to the Appearance panel, make sure that your patterned fill is selected then duplicate it using that same Duplicate Selected Item button.

Switch to “gridline every 1px“, so go to Edit > Preferences > Guides & Grid and enter 1 in the Gridline every box. Using the Ellipse Tool (L), create a 43 x 6px shape, fill it with the linear gradient shown below, place it as shown in the following image and go to Effect > Stylize > Drop Shadow. Enter the properties shown below and click OK.

Using the Ellipse Tool (L), create an 8 x 2px shape, set the fill color at R=255 G=103 B=0, place it as shown in the following image and go to Effect > Stylize > Drop Shadow. Enter the properties shown below and click OK.

Using the Ellipse Tool (L), create a bunch of 3px, 2px and 1px circles, set their fill color at R=255 G=193 B=45 and spread them roughly as shown in the following images.

Make sure that the Ellipse Tool (L) is still active and create some new tiny circles as shown in the following image. Use the same fill color (R=255 G=193 B=45). Reselect all the shapes that make up the orange liquid and Group them (Control-G). Go to the Layers panel and simply name this new group "orangeLiquid".

4. Add the Front Highlights

Step 1

Select your "main" shape and simply replace the existing fill color with R=180 G=179 B=201.

Disable the Snap to Grid (View > Snap to Grid) then go to Edit > Preferences > General and make sure that the Keyboard Increment is set at 1px. Reselect your "main" shape and make two copies in front (Control-C > Control-F > Control-F). Select the top copy and move it 2px up and 2px to the left using the arrow buttons from your keyboard. Reselect both copies and click the Minus Front button from the Pathfinder panel.

Make sure that the resulting group of shapes is selected, bring it to front (Shift-Control-] ), hit Control-8 to turn it into a simple Compound Path then set the fill color at black. Finally, lower its Opacity to 5% and change the Blending Mode to Overlay.

Reselect your "main" shape and make two copies in front (Control-C > Control-F > Control-F). Select the top copy and move it 1px up and 1px to the left using the arrow buttons from your keyboard. Reselect both copies and click the Minus Front button from the Pathfinder panel.

Make sure that the resulting group of shapes is selected, bring it to front (Shift-Control-] ), turn it into a Compound Path (Control-8) and set the fill color at black. Finally, lower its Opacity to 10% and change the Blending Mode to Overlay.

Reselect your "main" shape and go to Object > Path > Offset Path. Enter a -1px Offset and click OK. Make sure that the resulting shape is selected and make a copy in front (Control-C > Control-F). Select this copy and move it 1px down and 1px to the right. Reselect both shapes made in this step and click the Minus Front button from the Pathfinder panel.

Bring the resulting group of shapes to front (Shift-Control-] ) then fill those thin shapes with the linear gradient shown in the following image. The yellow zero from the Gradient image stands for Opacity percentage. This means that you need to select that gradient slider, focus on the Opacity box (from the Gradient panel) and lower it to 0%.

Make sure that the group of thin shapes made in the previous step is still selected, lower its Opacity to 85% and change the Blending Mode to Soft Light.

Reselect your "main" shape and go to Object > Path > Offset Path. Enter a -1px Offset and click OK. Make sure that the resulting shape is selected and make a copy in front (Control-C > Control-F). Select this copy and move it 1px up and 1px to the left.

Reselect both shapes made in this step and click the Minus Front button from the Pathfinder panel. Bring the resulting group of shapes to front (Shift-Control-] ) and fill those thin shapes with the linear gradient shown in the following image. Don’t forget that the yellow zero from the Gradient image stands for Opacity percentage.

Make sure that the group of thin shapes made in the previous step is still selected and change its Blending Mode to Overlay.

Reselect your "main" shape and go to Object > Path > Offset Path. Enter a -2px offset and click OK. Bring the resulting shape to front (Shift-Control-] ) and set its fill color at white (R=255 G=255 B=255).

Make sure that this new shape stays selected and focus on the Appearance panel. Replace the flat fill color with the linear gradient shown in the following image, lower its Opacity to 30%, change the Blending Mode to Soft Light and go to Effect > Blur > Gaussian Blur. Enter a 3px Radius and click OK.

Reselect your "main" shape and go to Object > Path > Offset Path. Enter a -4px Offset and click OK. Bring the resulting shape to front (Shift-Control-] ), set its fill color at white then simply move it 1px up and 1px to the left.

Enable the Snap to Grid (View > Snap to Grid). Using the Ellipse Tool (L), re-create that 45px circle and the two, 50px circles and place like you did the first time. Make sure that all three circles are selected and turn them into a Compound Path (Control-8). Select it along with the thin, white shape and click the Minus Front button from the Pathfinder panel. Turn the resulting group of shapes into a Compound Path (Control-8), bring it to front (Shift-Control-] ) and change the Blending Mode to Soft Light.

Reselect the shapes and groups of shapes used to highlight your "main" shape and Group them (Control-G). Go to the Layers panel and simply name this new group "frontHighlights".

5. Add Shading and Highlights for the Round Pieces of Your Chemistry Tubes

Step 1

Return to “gridline every 5px ” and enable the Snap to Grid (View > Snap to Grid). Using the Ellipse Tool (L), create a new 45px circle, set the fill color at R=22 G=134 B=212 and place it as shown in the following image.

Switch to “gridline every 1px“, so go to Edit > Preferences > Guides & Grid and enter 1 in the Gridline every box. Using the Ellipse Tool (L), create a 39px circle, set the fill color at white, lower the Opacity to 10% and place it as shown in the first image. Continue with the Ellipse Tool (L), create a 10px circle, set the fill color at white, lower the Opacity to 70% and place it as shown in the second image. Focus on your Toolbar and simply click on the Blend Tool (or go to Object > Blend > Blend Options). Select Specified Steps from the Spacing drop-down menu and enter 15 in that white box. Now, make sure that the two circles made in this step are selected and simply hit Alt-Control-B (or go to Object > Blend > Make) to create a simple blend. In the end things should look like in the third image.

Return to “gridline every 5px ” and disable the Snap to Grid (View > Snap to Grid). Reselect your blue circle and make two copies in front (Control-C > Control-F > Control-F). Select the top copy and move it 1px up using the up arrow button from your keyboard.

Reselect both copies and click the Minus Front button from the Pathfinder panel. Bring the resulting shape to front (Shift-Control-] ), fill it with the linear gradient shown in the following image, lower its Opacity to 20% and change the Blending Mode to Soft Light. Remember that the yellow zeros from the Gradient image stand for Opacity percentage while the white numbers stand for Location percentage.

Reselect your blue circle and go to Object > Path > Offset Path. Enter a -1px Offset and click OK. Select the resulting shape and make a copy in front (Control-C > Control-F). Select this copy and move it 1px up using the up arrow button from your keyboard.

Select the resulting shape and make a copy in front (Control-C > Control-F). Select this copy and move it 3px down using the down arrow button from your keyboard.

Reselect both shapes made in this step and click the Minus Front button from the Pathfinder panel. Bring the resulting shape to front (Shift-Control-] ), set the fill color at white, lower its Opacity to 40% and change the Blending Mode to Soft Light.

Reselect your blue circle and go to Object > Path > Offset Path. Enter a -1px Offset and click OK. Select the resulting shape and make a copy in front (Control-C > Control-F). Select this copy and move it 1px down using the down arrow button from your keyboard.

Reselect your blue circle and simply hit the Delete button from your keyboard to remove it. Reselect the blend and the rest of the shapes used to highlight this round piece of the tube and Group them (Control-G). Move to the Layers panel and simply name this new group "roundSmall".

Enable the Snap to Grid (View > Snap to Grid). Using the Ellipse Tool (L), create a new 50px circle, set the fill color at R=22 G=134 B=212 and place it as shown in the following image.

Switch to "gridline every 1px", so go to Edit > Preferences > Guides & Grid and enter 1 in the Gridline every box. Using the Ellipse Tool (L), create a 44px circle, set the fill color at white, lower the Opacity to 10% and place it as shown in the first image.

Continue with the Ellipse Tool (L), create a 12px circle, set the fill color at white, lower the Opacity to 70% and place it as shown in the second image. Make sure that both circles made in this step are selected and simply hit Alt-Control-B (or go to Object > Blend > Make) to create a new blend. In the end things should look like in the third image.

Switch to “gridline every 1px” and enable the Snap to Grid (View > Snap to Grid). Using the Ellipse Tool (L), create a 16 x 6px shape, set the fill color at white and place it as shown in the first image.

Make sure that this squeezed circle stays selected, lower its Opacity to 70%, change the Blending Mode to Soft Light and go to Effect > Warp > Arc. Enter the properties shown in the following image and click OK.

Using the Ellipse Tool (L), create a 16 x 4px shape, set the fill color at white and place it as shown in the first image. Make sure that this squeezed circle stays selected, lower its Opacity to 50%, change the Blending Mode to Soft Light and go to Effect > Warp > Arc. Enter the properties shown in the following image and click OK.

Return to “gridline every 5px “. Reselect your blue circle and simply hit the Delete button from your keyboard to remove it. Reselect the blend and the rest of the shapes used to highlight this round piece of the tube and Group them (Control-G). Move to the Layers panel and simply name this new group "roundLarge".

Reselect your "roundLarge" group and duplicate it (Control-C > Control-F). Select this group copy and drag it above the right round piece of the tube as shown in the second image.

6. Add Shading and Highlights for Your Main Shape

Step 1

Disable the Grid (View > Hide Grid) and the Snap to Grid (View > Snap to Grid). Select your "main" shape and focus on the Appearance panel. Select the existing fill, lower its Opacity to 10% then simply replace the existing fill color with R=38 G=34 B=98.

Make sure that your "main" shape stays selected, focus on the Appearance panel and add a second fill using that same Add New Fill button. Select this new fill, set the color at white, lower its Opacity to 15% and go to Effect > Stylize > Inner Glow. Enter the properties shown in the following image and click OK.

Make sure that your "main" shape stays selected, focus on the Appearance panel, select the white fill and go to Effect > Stylize > Drop Shadow. Enter the properties shown in the top, left window (in the following image), click OK and then add the other four Drop Shadow effects shown in the following image.

Make sure that your "main" shape stays selected, focus on the Appearance panel and add a 1pt, black stroke. Select it, set the aligning to inside, lower its Opacity to 10% and change the Blending Mode to Soft Light.

Make sure that your "main" shape is still selected, focus on the Appearance panel and add a second stroke using the Add New Stroke button (pointed by the little, blue arrow in the following image). Select this new stroke, make sure that the color is set at black, align it to inside, set the size at 3pt then lower its Opacity to 10% and change the Blending Mode to Soft Light.

Make sure that your "main" shape is still selected, focus on the Appearance panel and add a third stroke using that same Add New Stroke button. Select it, make sure that the color is set at black, align it to outside, set the size at 1pt then lower its Opacity to 10% and change the Blending Mode to Soft Light.

7. Create the Background

Step 1

Pick the Rectangle Tool (M) and simply click on your artboard to open the Rectangle window. Enter 935 in the Width box and 365 in the Height box then click the OK button. This will create a 935 x 365px rectangle. Make sure that it stays selected, set the fill color at R=133 G=169 B=157 then send it to back (Shift-Control-[ ).

Next, you need to center this new rectangle, so open the Align panel (Window > Align). Set the aligning to Artboard (open the fly out menu and go to Show Options if you can’t see the Align To section as shown in the following image) then simply click the Horizontal Align Center and Vertical Align Center buttons. In the end your rectangle should cover the entire Artboard as shown in the following image. Move to the Layers panel, double-click on the shape made in this step and simply name it "bg".

Make sure that your "bg" shape is still selected, focus on the Appearance panel and add a second fill. Select it, change the Blending Mode to Overlay, lower its Opacity to 50% and add the radial gradient shown in the following image. Focus on your artboard and use the Gradient Tool (G) to stretch that gradient as shown in the following image.

Make sure that your "bg" shape is still selected, focus on the Appearance panel and add a third fill. Select it, set the color at black, lower its Opacity to 5%, change the Blending Mode to Multiply and go to Effect > Artistic > Film Grain. Enter the properties shown in the following image and click OK.

Make sure that your "bg" shape is still selected, focus on the Appearance panel and add a fourth fill. Select it, change the Blending Mode to Overlay, lower its Opacity to 15%, open the Decorative_Classic patterns panel (open the fly-out menu of the Swatches panel and go to Open Swatch Library > Patterns > Decorative > Decorative_Classic) and simply add the "Waves Smooth" pattern.

8. Create the Metallic Supports

Step 1

Enable the Snap to Grid (View > Snap to Grid) and switch to “gridline every 1px“. Using the Rectangle Tool (M), create a 6 x 12px shape, fill it with the linear gradient shown below and place it as shown in the following image. Make sure that your new rectangle stays selected and go to Effect > Stylize > Rounded Corners. Enter a 1px Radius and click OK.

Step 2

Using the Rectangle Tool (M), create two, 3 x 10px shapes and place them as shown in the first image. Fill both rectangles with black, lower their Opacity to 15% and change the Blending Mode to Soft Light. Using the same tool, create two, 1 x 10px shapes and place them as shown in the second image. Fill both shapes with black, lower their Opacity to 30% and change the Blending Mode to Soft Light.

Reselect the four rectangles made in this step along with the rounded rectangle made in the previous step and Group them (Control-G). Move to the Layers panel and name this new group "supportFront".

Step 3

Keep focusing on your "supportFront" group. Using the Rectangle Tool (M), create a new 6 x 12px shape, set the fill color at black and place it as shown in the first image.

Move to the Layers panel, name this black rectangle "supportShadow" then drag it below your "main" shape. Make sure that the shape made in this step stays selected and focus on the Appearance panel. Select the existing fill, lower its Opacity to 15% and go to Effect > Path > Offset Path. Enter a 3px Offset, click OK and go to Effect > Blur > Gaussian Blur. Enter a 3px Radius and click OK.

Return to the Appearance panel and add a second fill for your shape. Select it, make sure that the color is set at black, lower its Opacity to 5% and go to Effect > Path > Offset Path. Enter a 2px Offset and click OK. Get back to the Appearance panel and add a third fill for your rectangle. Select it, lower the Opacity to 5% and go to Effect > Path > Offset Path. Enter a 1px Offset and click OK.

Return to the Appearance panel, select your entire path (simply click on the "Path" piece of text from the top of the Appearance panel) and go to Effect > Stylize > Rounded Corners. Enter a 1px radius and click OK. In the end things should look like in the following image.

Step 4

Multiply your "supportFront" group and "supportShadow" shape then spread the copies roughly as shown in the following image.
