In this tutorial, I’d like to show you how to create a crumpled paper logo animation with Trapcode Mir.
Step 1
Create a new composition by clicking Menu->Composition->New Composition. Name it Logo
and change the resolution to 1280×720 and set the duration to 13 seconds.
Step 2
Put your Text, Image or Logo in the Logo
composition.
Step 3
Create a new composition by clicking Menu->Composition->New Composition. Name it Final
and change the resolution to 1280×720 and set the duration to 13 seconds.
Step 4
Open the Final
composition and create a new solid by clicking Menu->Layer->New->Solid. Change the resolution to 1280×720 and name it Background
. The color is not important!
Step 5
Select the Background
layer and after that go to Effect->Generate->Ramp and change the ramp shape to linear ramp. Let’s change the start color to #494845 and the end color to #636363.
Step 6
Create a new composition by clicking Menu->Composition->New Composition. Name it Map
and change the resolution to 1280×720 and set the duration to 13 seconds.
Step 7
Open the Map
composition and let’s create a new solid by clicking Menu->Layer->New->Solid. Change the resolution to 1280×720 and name it Background
. The color is very important! Change it to # A0A0A0.
Step 8
Let’s duplicate the Background
layer and rename it Transition
and after that select the rectangle tool and create a mask. The color is very important! Change it to # 000000.
Step 9
We have to animate this mask so let’s press the M key twice on the keyboard to reveal the mask properties. Go to the first frame on the timeline and click on the stopwatch. Move forward to 13 seconds and select the mask and move it down.
Step 10
You have to make a simple vertical mask transition. I also add the Roughen Edges plug-in to create uneven edges. So select the Transition
layer and go to Effect->Stylize->Roughen Edges and apply the following settings!
Step 11
Open the Final
composition and drop in the Map
composition. Turn it off and drop in the Logo
composition as well.
Step 12
Let’s create a new solid by clicking Menu->Layer->New->Solid. Change the resolution to 1280×720 and name it MIR
. The color is not important!
Step 13
Select the MIR
layer and apply Mir by going to Effect->Trapcode->Mir, then apply the following settings. Open the Geometry tab, go to the first frame, and let’s set the Bend X and Bend Y properties to 10. After that go to 4 seconds and change this value to 0.
Step 14
Under the Fractal tab, I animated the Frequency X so go to the first frame and let’s set the value to 112. After that, go to 12 seconds and change this value to 140. If you want a static effect then you can skip this part. Last but not least, let’s use the Map
composition as the Amplitude Layer.
Step 15
Let’s change the Shader properties.
Step 16
We’re going to use the Logo
composition as the Texture Layer.
Step 17
(Optional Step) If you duplicate the MIR
layer and change the Draw property to Wireframe under the Shader tab then you can create a "web" or a Plexus-looking effect, which can works really well with specific logos. Other times it’s just ugly though so try it with your own logo to see if it works!
Step 18
It’s time to add some light! Create a new Point Light by clicking Menu->Layer->New->Light.
Step 19
Here’s my light Position values. You can add multiple lights if you want or you can animate the light position as well. It’s up to you.
Conclusion
So as you can see, this is not too complicated or difficult of a technique. You can create a lot of great things with this technique and I hope it will help you create some cool animations. If you get stuck in the tutorial, simply leave your question in the comments below! Thanks a lot for your attention.
