Most of you that read Web.AppStorm read it because you love all of the cool apps that are being used on the internet. The internet is full of great information and great things to read. I am always looking for the next best thing on the web or reading great articles from other tech blogs that are out there.
Sometimes as we are searching the net, we can get overwhelmed with the information and saving it for later reading. There are some great services out there that help you save articles for later, but a new web app called Save & Search takes a little different approach. It takes all the things that you search for today and makes them searchable and easy to find when you need the articles later. Let me show you what I am talking about.
No Account Needed
One of the things that made this app stand out to me right away was that I didn’t necessarily have to create an account; I could start using the app right away. You do have the option to create an account using your Facebook or Google credentials if you choose to. As I started to use the app more and more, I realized that I really didn’t need to have an account to take full advantage of the app. I definitely liked this option, as most apps are not fully functional if you don’t create one.
Logging in with Facebook or Google
Saving
When you first start to use Save & Search, you have to think of it as a place where you can dump both links and text so that you can get to it later. As I started to use the web app, I started to realize that there are some great uses for it and it can be very handy. Here are some of the ways that I used Save & Search.
Save & Search Homepage
Let’s say you are on the internet and you come across an article that you want to read later or you want to save a link because you are doing some research. You can copy and past the link into Save & Search, give it a title and then write down your email address. You have now created a bookmark, so to speak, that can be searched for later.
Saving a link
Save & Search can also be used as a way to capture notes or thoughts. Maybe you came across a thought or a quote that you want to remember for later use. You can enter it in to the text box and save it so that you can look it up later if need be.
Another way that this app can be used is say you find something on the internet or you have to jot down some notes and you want to send them to someone else. You can enter the link or notes in Save and Search and instead of putting in your own email address, you can put in the email address of someone that you want to send it to and they will get an email with the link.
Saving notes to Save & Search
Searching
Links and notes are useless if you can only save them and not easily search for them later. Anything that you save into the app can be searched for later by typing in the title of the note, any words that are in your previous saves, or by email address. This is why an account is not needed; since you can search by email address, you can easily pull up all of your previous things.
Searching for things you saved
Interacting
Saving and searching are not the only things that you can do with this app. It is very interactive and your saves can be commented on by others. They can also be tweeted, “liked” and sent to others on Facebook and they can also give it a thumbs up or down.
Interacting with your saves
The integration of interaction really makes this more than just a save and search tool. It really opens up the possibility of collaboration with others on the things that you save.
Thoughts
The more I played around with Save & Search, the more I started to like it and the more uses I could find for it. Although I mainly use Instapaper to save articles and links for later reading, I soon realized that this is so different than just saving links for later. What sets this app apart from other similar services is that you can save notes and share ideas and collaborate with others all within the app.
There are a couple of things that I would like to see added to the app. For one, with the advent of HTML 5, I would love to be able to drag and drop text, files, and even pictures into the app and save those things for later usage and collaboration. I would also like to see a bookmarklet to easily get links into the app.
Conclusion
Save & Search is in beta at the moment and it actually works pretty well for an app that is in the infancy stage. I can definitely see this being useful for a lot of people. There are many uses for this app, ranging from simply saving links to more involved collaboration around ideas. Go and check it out and let us know how the app can be useful to you.
