Pintrest + Ping = This Is My Jam

As we all, know social sharing is huge and is becoming more and more popular. We have sites like Pintrest and Gentlemint, which I reviewed a while back, that have grown in popularity due to people loving to share the things that they like and want others to know about. So I guess, it would be only natural that people would also want to share the music they are listening to as well.

I know there have been times when I have just wanted to share with others a song that is inspiring me for that day or a song that was stuck in my head. This Is My Jam could very well be that site that fulfills this need for me. It is kind of like what you would get if Pinterest and Ping for iTunes decided to combine one day.

Getting Started

When you first go to This is my Jam, you have to register an account either with your Facebook, Twitter account, or using your email. The next thing you need to do is pick a song that you want to share with others.

There are a few ways you can add a new song your page. The first way is you can search for the song either by title or by artist. You will then be presented with a list of songs that match your search. The results are separated into two columns, one is just the audio of the song, the other is the audio and video of the song. Next, you need to choose the song that you want, either just the audio, or the video.

If you want to get a little more creative, there are a couple of different ways to share a song. The first one is through a SoundCloud link and secondly, you can upload your own music as long as it is in mp3 format. The nice part of these two, is that it opens up the possibility for you to share your music that you create with other people.

Once you have selected your song, now you have to put the finishing touches on it before you share it out. You can edit the title as well as the artist if for some reason the app has it wrong. A description of the song or your thoughts as to why you chose it can also be inserted here.  You can also customize the cover of your song. A snapshot of the video is taken and used as your cover and you can use this or you can upload your own image to use as the cover if you like.

Once you are done customizing your song, you are now ready to share it out to the world. Your song will automatically be posted to the This Is My Jam site, but you can also share it to Twitter as well as Facebook.

 Getting Social

As we know by now, no sharing app is complete without some kind of social interaction around what you share with others. With This Is My Jam, if you connect your Twitter and/or Facebook account, it will search them to see which of your friends are using the app. There is also a Suggested People list that you can choose to follow, which includes people that have similar song interest as you, as well as others who have the most popular song of the month or currently.

When you visit someone else’s “jam,” you can interact with it in a variety of ways. Songs can be “liked”, commented on, and they can also be shared out to the world with Twitter by tweeting the song. You can also post to you Timeline, like, or send the song to someone else on Facebook.

 Music Discovery

This Is My Jam is more than just sharing music though; it is also about discovering music and there are a handful of ways that you can do this. First, you can check out the Popular Jams; these are songs that are popular for the current day. Although this is a good feature to have, I wish you could see popular songs for the last week, month, etc. I will assume as the site gets more members it will start to be able to expand to these choices.

You can also discover more music by playing the songs of the people that you follow. So, if you follow a lot of people that are interactive on the site, you can possibly get a good music collection going. Then lastly, like I had mentioned before, you are also given a list of people to follow based upon your song choices and what is popular.

 Conclusion

Overall, I definitely like the concept of This Is My Jam. I think it is an easy way to share and interact around the music that you and others like. Being that it is in beta there are not a whole lot of users in general and not many people that I know so I haven’t had much of a chance to interact with others. But I am sure as it grows this will be able to happen more. My other minor gripe with it is the interface could use a little work. It works well, but visually, I think there is something missing.
