Blog Action Day: Web Apps for Water

This year AppStorm is taking part in Blog Action Day to raise awareness about clean water and water conservation.

In this post we’ll take a few minutes to consider how the wonderful world of web apps affect water resources and how you can use them to benefit not only yourself but also the water enriched world we live in.

About Blog Action Day

So, what is Blog Action Day?

Blog Action Day is an annual event held every October 15 that unites the world’s bloggers in posting about the same issue on the same day with the aim of sparking a global discussion and driving collective action. This year’s topic is water.

Blog Action Day 2010

A few facts about water you may not know, provided by Blog Action Day.

  • Unsafe drinking water and lack of sanitation kills more people every year than all forms of violence, including war.
  • More people have access to a cell phone than to a toilet.
  • Every day, women and children in Africa walk a combined total of 109 million hours to get water.
  • It takes 6.3 gallons of water to produce just one hamburger.
  • The average American uses 159 gallons of water every day – more than 15 times the average person in the developing world.

I highly encourage you to read more about these facts via Five Facts About Water You Might Not Know and water.org.

“Technology and Water are Linked”

As David states over at Mac.AppStorm, technology and water are linked, though it’s incredibly easy to forget or never even make the connection in the first place.

In more or less every power plant around the world, water makes up a substantial cost. It cools the incredible heat produced by oil and gas power stations, and turns the hydro-electric turbines in others. Without water, we wouldn’t have any power – it’s as simple as that.

– David Appleyard, Blog Action Day: Get Your Mac Involved!

Web apps make a tremendous impact on energy consumption, though most of us never even think the connection through. Believe it or not but every time you run a Google search, you’re contributing to water usage, which isn’t to say that you shouldn’t be using Google search. In fact, you should be using Google search and other Google products to replace older and more energy consuming forms of obtaining data.

Google's Efficient Data Centers

Google’s Efficient Data Centers

At Google’s Efficient Computing site, Google states that it would take 850 Google searches to reach the equivalent CO2 emissions an average daily newspaper requires for production. As David stated earlier, water plays a big role in the production of energy, which also ties into CO2.

So what does that mean? You’d be saving energy, and in turn water, by choosing to use Google’s services rather than less efficient options.

Cloud Computing

One reason cloud computing has grown in popularity so significantly over the last few years is it allows large organizations, such as Google, Apple, Amazon and others, to build more efficient computing methods. Distributed computing (e.g. applications on each individual’s computer) just isn’t capable of being optimized to the same level as centralized computing (e.g. Google’s data centers), not to mention most data centers are upgraded and maintained far more often than most people’s home computers.

Those who run large data centers are able to make their systems far more efficient than the home computers we all use daily. So, how do you take advantage of that? Web apps!

Read more about Google’s effort to improve water consumption efficiency and bring clean water to those who need it.

Web apps, for the most part, use remote data center’s data processing and storage capabilities rather than your computer’s, which translates into more efficient use of energy. So by allowing data centers to handle the bulk of your tasks (email, task management, Twitter, etc) number crunching, you’re choosing a more efficient method of energy usage and in turn reducing your overall contribution to the consumption of water.

Here are a few good apps for calculating your water consumption and helping you increase your water usage efficiency.

There may not be that many web apps dedicated to helping you track or monitor your water usage, but you can help by using the power of web apps to raise awareness and educate others. It’s as simple as a blog post, a tweet or maybe mentioning it on Facebook!

Mac.AppStorm and iPhone.AppStorm also have some fantastic apps you can use on your desktop or iOS devices for keeping track of water, finding water usage information, etc.

Clean water is a serious issue for a large portion of the world’s population, though many of us in more developed countries may not think it. It’s easy to contribute to helping those less fortunate and even get something neat in the process. At water.org you can purchase a high quality CamelBak water bottle, with a portion going towards their work, or even just make a simple donation.

  • Water.org is a U.S.-based non-profit organization committed to providing safe drinking water and sanitation to people in developing countries. There are various ways to get involved with their work.
  • charity: water is another non-profit organization bringing clean and safe drinking water to people in developing nations. Backed by a handful of famous faces and celebrities, they guarantee that 100% of public donations directly fund water projects.
  • The Water Project is a non-profit organization that’s bringing relief to communities around the world who suffer needlessly from a lack of access to clean water.
  • The Unicef Tap Project provides access to safe water and sanitation facilities while promoting safe hygiene practices in more than 100 countries.

Share Your Contributions or Ideas!

If you’re making an effort to conserve on water, boost your energy efficiency or simply mulling over some ideas to do so, we’d love to hear about it in the comments below.

Many of us take water for granted and couldn’t even imagine a life where water is in short supply, but there are many people in the world that live a water-scarce life daily. It’s important for those more fortunate to take a step back, evaluate how we impact our environment and make a contribution to more efficient water consumption practices. You might also consider helping others who may not be as fortunate by donating.

10 Apps for Monitoring Social Media

The benefits of listening to or monitoring Social Media are growing at a break neck pace. Social media is the fastest way to reach out to people. For instance, if you’re looking to get open positions filled in your establishment, there’s a high probability of getting the word out quicker via social platforms. Not everyone is monitoring recruitment sites, your company’s careers page or the corporate blog for vacant positions.

When you send out a tweet with a proper hashtag, say “#jobs”, the chances of it reaching more people is highly likely. This is just a sample among some really lucrative domains like customer support, business intelligence and market survey, among others. Checkout our list of great apps for monitoring multiple social media platforms after the fold.

Hootsuite

Hootsuite

Hootsuite

Arguably the king of social media management tools, with an arsenal of features under its hood. This web app leverages the power of HTML5 to manage multiple social networks using multiple accounts, keep track of trends, monitor keywords and much more. Hootsuite helps you to make sense of the exponential downstream tweets and updates filtered and assigned to columns.

Multiple users can tweet from the same account helping you to rotate members of your customer support team working on shifts. Tweets can be scheduled and audio alerts can be set to notify when there are new tweets. They also have powerful mobile clients on all major smartphone platforms for on the go social media fix.

A lot of features that have now become standard features in major social media tools emerged from CoTweet. Until the arrival of HootSuite, they were the destination of choice for corporates and commoners alike when it came to social media management. Eventhough they’ve stopped calling them the “Social CRM”, the way user profile information and threaded conversations had with them are presented in the right sidebar is pretty useful.

You can also add notes to the conversation, add them to lists and see their social media influence with their Klout rating. Apart from Facebook integration, the app is tightly integrated to the ExactTarget’s email marketing app and the Salesforce CRM.

SocialOomph

SocialOomph

SocialOomph

With a homepage that looks like it was designed in the bygone Web 1.0 era, it’s hard to believe that SocialOomph packs so many features under the hood. With this web app, in addition to keeping an eye on Twitter and Facebook, you can also publish posts to your blog as well. With the help of predefined tweet channels, tweets from selected breaking news sites, technology news sites, celebrities and more can be viewed. You can schedule your tweets, replies, DMs, Facebook updates and blog posts with the help of SocialOomph.

Create Stunning 3D Slideshows with CU3ER

The simplest way to grab a visitor’s attention, impress a client, or draw eyeballs for an online promotion, is to go with slideshows created in Flash. Flash slideshows look snazzy, are light weight and are visible on almost any web browser. But how long can we scrape through with the good old two dimensional slide and flip transitions?

This where CU3ER steps in to our rescue. CU3ER comes with a great set of features, enabling you to create 3D slideshows with a wide range of customization options to make your slideshow as impressive as possible. Let us go check it out.

Overview

Overview

Overview

Simply put, CU3ER is an easy to set up and extremely customizable 3D image slider creation tool. With its tailor made 3D designs, all your images can be given a three dimensional twist.  CU3ER a can be used to create a content slider, image gallery or online advertisement that are sure to attract a bunch of eyeballs. Sign up is pretty standard and requires email activation.

Pricing

CU3ER has to two paid plans priced at $49 and $199 respectively. The former supports one domain and the latter supports upto five and you get to remove the CU3ER brand name from the sliders.

Pricing

Pricing

A free plan is available too but the primary feature missing from the free plan is the awesome CU3ER manager, the immensely simple to use 3D slide creator and the star attraction of the web app.

cManager

As far as CU3ER is concerned cManager is everything. It is the dashboard, it is the GUI, it is the editor and the list goes on. While free users don’t have access to this awesome tool, they can take it for a spin by clicking on the demo link in the homepage.

cManager

cManager

At first glance, cManager looks great with a minimalistic look and you will just see four icons in the left pane to control bulk of the functionality. There are four tabs to help you track the transitions and effects in the Tween. For those new to animation or Flash, tweening is the process of generating intermediate frames between two images to give the appearance that the first image evolves smoothly into the second image.

Adding Images

Using the Image Library icon on the left pane, you can upload images from the desktop to the library. Once the images are in the library you can add them to the slides you are creating.

Adding Images

Adding Images

You can a custom backdrop in the slide using an image from the library. From Settings you can control the alignment of images, their dimensions, transparency and image transform inputs.

Adding Visual Addons

Navigation and visual elements like arrows, auto play options, description of the slide etc. can be added from the Visual Addons section. While the arrows help move the slide (depending on the transition you are planning) along in either direction, auto play options help you decide if the slide has to start rolling without requiring the user to click anything.

Adding a Background Image

Adding a Background Image

Using the Preloader feature, you can add a status or progress bar indicating the viewer how far the slide has come and how much more to go. You can either use the default preloaders that come with CU3ER or create a custom one.

Preloader

Preloader

Shadows are part and parcel of the 3D experience as they add depth to the visuals. CU3ER allows you to create both static and dynamic (changes with the transition) shadows. Using distortion controllers, you can just start matching shadow perspective with slides.

Adding Shadows

Adding Shadows

Setting the Camera

Camera that is referred to here is a functionality that basically mimics how you will want the slide to be displayed at various angles, just like the way you do with a normal real world camera. Click on Camera button in Settings menu to start assigning X, Y and Z co-ordinates to change the perspective.

Managing Slides

Coming to  the crux of the entire process – the content (images). CU3ER offers you complete control over the configuration of the entire slide and that of the individual slides as well. Right from which slide to begin with to the duration of the slide and the number of times the slide has to be repeated (loop effect) everything is editable.

Arranging Slides

Arranging Slides

If you want the images to scale horizontally or vertically, use the Transform settings to suit your needs. You can also add a caption to the slides and link them to URLs.

Adding Transitions

Time to spice up the slides by adding transitions. You can create 3D transitions using the Flip motion at various degrees. 2D transitions like fade and glide are also available if you like to mix and match.

Transitions

Transitions

Using the Grid, you can choose exactly where the images should slice through during the transition. In the same manner you can also set the direction in which the slices should rotate – left, right, up, down or any combination of this four.

Timeline

Timeline

Timeline

Timeline helps you put the slides in order and in a sequence that makes perfect sense. In a nutshell, Timeline is a thumbnail display of all the slides and transitions. Slides are represented by respective images and the transitions by grids.

Updating the Timeline

Updating the Timeline

You can either fine tune the timeline by working on the individual slide/transition or using a slide and transition pair. Just click on the + symbol to insert a new slide or transition to the timeline and drag & drop them from their current positions to change an existing timeline. It’s that simple with CU3ER!

Conclusion

If all things are up to your satisfaction and the preview looks perfect, hit the Export option to get  the CU3ER package with all the relevant files included in it. Upload the files to your server and impress your audience with some mind boggling 3D effects.

With so many options to customize the slide and transitions, the possibilities of creating fresh and unique 3D slides are endless. Considering the cost of hiring a Flash developer, at this price point CU3ER is a steal, saving lot of time in the process. Just go for it!

Weekly Poll: Do you play browser-based games?

Browser-based games certainly don’t rival console or computer games, either in capabilities or the number of people playing them, but they’re certainly growing in popularity. Facebook has likely had a big role in the uptake of browser-based games thanks to several immensely popular titles that have even made their way onto mobile platforms like the iPhone and iPad.

OnLive.com was initially described as being browser-based gaming, though now the mention of “browser” seems to have disappeared. However, it’s still a revolutionary new way to play online games though a browser-like interface. It’s one service that could keep me from ever buying another console or regular desktop game again, once it develops enough of course.

I’m interested in finding out how many of our readers frequently play browser-based games, only occasionally, or maybe not at all. If you do play browser-based games such as the ones on Facebook, through OnLive or even ones we’ve previously mentioned before, let us know in the comments. Thanks!

Beautiful Web Analytics with Observer

For a webmaster, traffic analytics is a matter of ultimate concern. But for people who run blogs, forums or work in Search Engine Optimization (SEO) among other things, web traffic analysis is basically their bread and butter. Staying on top of traffic data can help you fine tune the content, target ads and to optimize the content for better SEO.

Sure, almost everyone uses Google Analytics. It is free and is pretty comprehensive with the data it shows us. At times, such a level comprehensiveness might be considered creepy and a lot us might feel overwhelmed with its too many features. One among the non Google Analytics app which is competent enough and has as many features is Observer. After the break, we have a detailed walkthrough of the web app’s features.

Overview

Observer is an easy to set up web analytics app with a great set of features, minimal design and quick to start tracking the traffic. If you have ever used Google Analytics, you might have noticed that it takes quite some time to get the traffic stats after you paste the code to the web page. But in the case of Observer the stats started showing up almost instantaneously.

Overview

Overview

Observer is currently in public beta, open to everyone free of charge. Signing up is relatively simple and you can start tracking the traffic within a few minutes.

Dashboard

Welcome Screen

Welcome Screen

A Welcome page with the tracking code to embed in your web page is displayed. All you have to do is paste the code below the body tag of the web page and you are done. In my experience, the traffic data started to appear within a minute of pasting the code.

Instantaneous Traffic Data

Instantaneous Traffic Data

The dashboard shows a bird’s eye view of the traffic stats of your web page. While there are no brightly colored pie charts and maps on the page , they are available in their respective sections. On the top, key traffic data – number of visits (both unique and overall) today, this week and this month are displayed across all pages. this way you do not have to comeback to the dashboard to view the vital traffic data.

Dashboard

Dashboard

If you hover over the graph, it will display the number of visits at that displayed hour and day. You can toggle the controls above the graph to see the visual representation of traffic data for the day, week and month.

In the traffic overview section, the number of hits are shown for every of the day with the unique and total clicks side by side. Past week, month and year’s traffic data is also available in the overview section for you to compare and analyze. The light shaded bars depicting the number of clicks as the background is a nice touch from the development team. It is subtle and informative.

Pageviews

Pageviews

Pageviews

The number of pages viewed on your web page is shown in numbers and graph in this section. The graph shows the comprehensive page view information and lists the popular pages on the number of hits received. While popular pages list shows what your users like in the site from the beginning, you can track the current trends from the Recent pages section.

Referrers

Referrers

Referrers

You can identify which sites are driving traffic your way from the Referrers section of Observer. Like in the case of Pageviews section, there is a graph that shows the number of referring sites per day and a list of popular and recent referrers along with a time stamp.

Searches

Searches

Searches

Searches section shows how well your site is optimized to the keywords from popular search engines. In this section, the traffic information is graphically visualized with two different types of graphs. Number of search results per day is shown in the normal graph at the top. A pie chart represents the share of search engines that send the traffic to your site. A list of keywords that resulted in the user landing at your site is also displayed. Based on these keywords, you can optimize the content to be more search engine friendly.

Location

Traffic by Location

Traffic by Location

Traffic by Location can be tracked from the Locations section. A color coded world map shows the countries from where your visitors come from. If the countries are white, there have been no traffic from that particular region. This geographical data can be used to fine tune content based on location and to serve targeted ads. Just hover over the countries with colors to see the percentage share of traffic from there.

Final Thoughts

If you are hosting a blog or CMS with a news feed powered by Feedburner, you can track the subscription stats right from Observer. No more need to switch back and forth between two different apps. Also, Observer allows you to keep track of multiple websites from the same account which is a welcome feature for those with bunch of sites.

One thing that is missing from Observer is the lack of comprehensive real-time traffic data. While this is a feature that even Google does not support at the moment, rivals like Clicky and Reinvigorate are nailing it with an unbelievable set of features. Yes, Observer is pretty fast to capture traffic data, is very responsive and gives the traffic information that we can put to use. However, I really doubt these would be major selling points, if they were to add premium plans. That said, Observer is a top notch web Analytics app and people who are worried about privacy should embrace it with both hands.
