eMac becomes cat bed

This eMac-turned-cat bed is the product of a friend of mine here in LA named Colin Hughes. A little while back, he got a new computer to replace his old (though still working) eMac, and instead of junking it, he decided to clean out the hardware and turn the case into a makeshift kitty pad. He says it took about an hour, mostly because the inside of the case was full of dust, but after transferring all of his files off, cleaning it out, and taking a screwdriver to the actual monitor, the case was ready for its feline tenants.

The cat above is named Little Mama, and she shares the setup with Colin’s other cat, Elvis. Cute stuff — you can see a few more shots of the conversion in the gallery below.

The Civil War Today app brings four years of daily history updates to your iPad

History and A&E Television Networks Mobile have teamed up to bring an excellent history app to iPad owners. The Civil War Today application chronicles the events of the Civil War over the next four years.

Each day, iPad users will be greeted with an update detailing the battles and historic information from that date 150 years earlier. These details are presented interactively using photos, maps, newspaper clippings, diary entries and more.

Socially aware, the iPad app also includes a Twitter feature that lets you send telegrams via Morse code and a tie-in with GameCenter to earn Civil War achievements.

The Civil War Today application launched on April 12, 2011, the 150th anniversary of the beginning of the Civil War. Daily application updates also began on April 12 and will continue until April 26, 2015.

The Civil War Today app is available now in the App Store and will set you back US$7.99. All things considered, this is a reasonable price for four years of fresh content straight from the annals of history.

Apple patents hybrid laser projection technology for use in laptops, iPhones, TVs

Every time I write about an Apple patent, I make a point to remind my readers that Apple files patents for a lot of things that never see the light of day in products. With that in mind, Apple has filed one of its coolest patents yet. It’s for a hybrid laser projection technology that could be used in any number of devices ranging from laptops to iPhones, even TVs.

Apple describes the hybrid laser projection technology as cheaper than traditional projectors with the added advantage of eliminating the grains and specs seen on current projection technologies. With (admittedly far-fetched) rumors of Apple getting into the TV business later this year, wouldn’t it be interesting if we saw one without a traditional display? Knowing Apple, I wouldn’t put it past the company. Apple always seems present us with future science fiction-like technology before most people think such a technology is a viable possibility.

Adobe plans to add HTTP Live Streaming to Flash Media Server to support iOS

Adobe showcased several new and upcoming features of its Flash Media Server during the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) trade show last week. One interesting feature for media producers who plan to target iOS users is the eventual addition of the iPhone-friendly HTTP Live Streaming to the Media Server’s supported protocol list. Adobe blogger Kevin Towes noted this change in a “sneak peak [sic]” of developments on the streaming and encoding front, but no specific timeframe was given for delivery of the new feature.

HTTP Live Streaming is an HTTP-based media streaming protocol developed by Apple. It uses H.264 video and AAC or mp3 audio to deliver its media stream. The protocol is supported by QuickTime on Mac OS X and is compatible with the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

This move by Adobe to support a non-Flash streaming format could be framed as a win for Apple in the Flash versus HTML 5 streaming wars. Since Apple shows no signs of moving towards Flash support on iOS, Adobe is modifying its services to support mobile streaming on Apple’s platforms; this makes Adobe’s solution more universally useful and compatible, while handing Apple a small but significant win.

Rep. Jesse Jackson, Jr. calls out iPad as a job-killer

In March, Representative Jesse Jackson, Jr. (D-IL) pushed his idea to amend the Constitution to guarantee an iPad, Kindle or Nook for every school child in the United States. In the intervening month, something must have happened to change Rep. Jackson’s mind about Apple’s tablet device.

According to a report from Real Clear Politics, Representative Jackson is now blaming the tablet device for “eliminating thousands of American jobs.” He pins the closing of Borders and a decline in book sales at Barnes & Noble on the iPad and similar tablet devices. On the House floor on Friday, in remarks about the seeming inability of the current Congress to focus on America’s unemployment problem, the congressman stated the following:

“A few short weeks ago I came to the House floor after having purchased an iPad and said that I happened to believe, Mr. Speaker, that at some point in time this new device, which is now probably responsible for eliminating thousands of American jobs. Now Borders is closing stores because, why do you need to go to Borders anymore? Why do you need to go to Barnes & Noble? Buy an iPad and download your newspaper, download your book, download your magazine.”

As he continued his remarks, he noted (correctly) that the iPad is manufactured in China, not in the US.

What say you American people, do you think the iPad is killing jobs in the US, or is the honorable gentleman off track?

Google: "Whenever iPhone succeeds, Google succeeds."

In a somewhat parasitic admittance of being a team player, Google’s Asia-Pacific president Daniel Alegre said that Google wants the iPhone to keep growing, because Apple’s device is delivering so much mobile search traffic their way. “Whenever iPhone succeeds, Google succeeds,” Alegre told AdNews. “I actually don’t look at it as iPhone versus Android. iPhone is a very strong driver of query growth for Google. We also monetize apps through the iPhone…we actually benefit from iPhone’s growth.”

While it’s no surprise that Google benefits from iPhone usage, as its search engine is the default one on the iPhone, it’s refreshing to hear Google admit that the iPhone helps them. But before you start to believe that Google has only good wishes for Apple’s or any other manufacturer’s phones, Alegre does admit that Google believes having too many mobile OSs is bad for development. “We truly believe there has to be as few platforms as possible in order for apps developers to focus their development,” he said.

Get email design chores under control with equinux Mail Designer

If you’ve ever had to code together a complex HTML email then you know how painful it usually is. It’s like taking a trip back to 1999 before the web discovered standards and everyone was still doing table-based design — only with the addition of cumbersome inline CSS, and the challenge of dealing with scores of different mail clients and their divergent HTML rendering. Unless you do this every day the process can be unwieldy at best and a downright nightmare otherwise. For most of us, learning to code our own email is way more work then it’s worth.

That’s where Mail Designer, a new application from equinux, comes in; it provides a rich graphical email composer that goes far beyond what you’ll be able to do in your preferred email client’s editor. Mail Designer takes an iWork approach, focusing on a balanced feature set that makes it easy to use and hides all the technical bits in the background before sending your email to Apple Mail for delivery.

Nationwide Best Buy iPad 2 promotion begins Sunday, April 17

For those of you who are still trying to get your hands on an iPad 2, your best bet in the near term is probably going to be this Sunday at a Best Buy. According to a leaked memo obtained by Engadget, most Best Buy stores will have at least three of each iPad model (which isn’t a lot given the demand).

There are technically 18 models of iPads (six Wi-Fi and twelve 3G models), but it’s unsure if the Best Buy memo is saying each store will have three of each of the 64 GB 3G AT&T and Verizon models, for example, or just a total of three 64 GB 3G models.

Last week rumors were flying that Apple had ordered Best Buy to pull all iPads from the shelves because the company was actually stockpiling them for this event. While the stockpiling was true, the order from Apple turned out to be false. The memo also states that if you have a reserve order fulfillment ticket, you’ll be given priority over the normal Joes standing in line. But if you’re sans ticket and want and iPad 2 badly, get to your local Best Buy to beat the lines. Best Buy stores typically open at 11AM on Sundays. Good luck!

White iPhone 4s appear in Verizon’s inventory

After a ten month delay, the mythical white iPhone 4 is almost upon us. Earlier this week Bloomberg reported that the white iPhone 4 would be shipping by the end of this month on both the Verizon and AT&T networks. And now 9to5 Mac has posted the above image which shows white iPhone 4s have hit Verizon’s inventory.

In the screenshot the 32 GB white iPhone 4 is listed as model number MC679LL/A. Just as with white and black iPad 2s, the model number for the white iPhone 4 is one digit higher than the model number for the black iPhone 4. Now the question is: once the white iPhone 4s ship, do those of you who’ve wanted one since last June rush out and buy one, or do you wait for the iPhone 5, which might not be shipping until this fall?

iOS 4.3.2 Untethered Jailbreak Exploit Confirmed Working!

i0n1c, the hacker behind untethered jailbreak exploit for iOS 4.3.1 confirms that Apple didn’t patch the untethered jailbreak exploit in iOS 4.3.2 firmware. This is what i0nic tweeted about the iOS 4.3.2 untethered jailbreak exploit:

Apple has been nice. I just verified that the untether vulnerability is not fixed in iOS 4.3.2 – my Ipad 1 is running untethered jailbroken

According to i0nic, his iPad 1 is already running iOS 4.3.2 with an untethered jailbreak.

About the availability of this untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.3.2, he states that, “I won’t be able to create all the untethered binaries before Sunday, because I will be on planes, …”

Dev-team, on the other hand, does not have the required source code of the untethered jailbreak exploit so, can’t produce the untether binaries on their own and release RedSn0w or PwnageTool with untethered 4.3.2 jailbreak.

The dev-team cannot produce the untether binaries on their own, because they don’t have the source code to the untethered exploit.

Stefan Esser (i0nic) will start working on iOS 4.3.2 untethered jailbreak from this Sunday.

Next sunday won’t be a funday… It is when work starts not when it ends…

You can tether jailbreak iOS 4.3.2, for now, using RedSn0w by following the guides linked below:

Paola Antonelli Treats Design as Art

Just because you missed that awesome conference, doesn’t mean that you can’t still watch the lectures! This weekend we’re sharing a talk by Paola Antonelli, design curator at New York’s Museum of Modern Art, who wants to spread her appreciation of design — in all shapes and forms — around the world.

AudioJungle Author: OhmLab

An M-Audio Fast Track Pro, cooking nice meals, hand drums, and asking, “What would it sound like if…?” Our sister site AudioJungle is a royalty-free stock audio site that helps musicians earn money. In this interview series you’ll learn about those musicians, their gear, and their AudioJungle experiences. Today we meet Chris Gear (OhmLab).

Tell us a bit about yourself. Where are you from, what do you do for a living?

Well, my name is Chris Gear and I am from Portland, OR here in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. Currently I am nearing the end of a year-long break, I make music and assist others with projects.

I will probably make a return to a daily grind soon though. Most likely in the form of a social web editor, technology consultant, marketing director or continue offering training to businesses and individuals so I will still have time to focus on my music and endeavors like AudioJungle.

Which marketplaces do you belong to? What types of files do you sell?

Currently I belong only to AudioJungle. I may put out some Tuts at some point, but for now I’m very happy to be a part of the wonderful and thriving community of AudioJungle.

I sell songs across all genres, podcasting themes, loops and have just launched a secondary OhmLab project focused entirely on logos, idents and effects targeting all those branding and gaming projects out there. You will find these available for download on AudioJungle within a week or so. And hopefully soon you will begin to see more field recordings, it’s all about finding the time…

How did you get started? Have you had any formal training?

I have been making music since I was a small child. It has always been a passion of mine, and I truly enjoy knowing that it reaches other people and touches them in some way. Whether it makes them dance, inspires a new project or adds the final polishing touch to something they have already created, I’m happy to be in the mix. It still kind of blows my mind when I think of my music helping to bring another person’s work to life. I have worked in radio and TV, so I know just how difficult it is to find something to integrate into your own projects and have it work the way you hoped it would.

Describe your home workspace.

It’s a constant battle of what needs to be done to finish the polishing touches, and spending the time using the space to record. My main computer is a 24″ iMac, which I usually control with a Wacom Intuos 3 pen-enabled tablet. I use an M-Audio Fast Track Pro (for most projects) as my main interface. My primary keyboard is an AxiomPro49, my other controller is an Axiom61. (Not pitching anything here for M-Audio, just used to work very closely with them, so I had amazing access to quality gear at a low cost) ;) I also use a Roland TD-12 v-kit and keep my Mapex Mars Pro Series kit close by, as you can see. A Yamaha acoustic guitar, a bunch of different hand drums, various percussion toys and a Zoom H4n HD digital recorder round out the collection.

Describe your creative process. What steps do you normally follow to create your files?

Well, first comes the creative brainstorming process. I consider what I have wanted to make, but haven’t done yet. That usually lasts all of a few seconds, because I am always wanting to try something new. If I have been inspired prior to walking into the studio, I roll with that. If not, I allow my mind to open up and start asking myself some pretty incredible questions. Like, “What would it sound like if…?” or “I wonder what would happen if I…” or “Why doesn’t anybody mix these sounds…”. I tend to lean towards new innovation in hybrid sounds and creating new genre bending fusions in music. I guess it may stem from my days as a classically trained chef, when I was known for my “unique” approach and style in the culinary arts scene.

When beginning a new track I may start with a beat, a melody or just an idea of what a scene might include that I want to try to score. Of course the scene is non-existent, or at least I’m unaware of it at that point. It is quite common for me to try several things that seem like they will be the focal point of the song, only to have them all wiped away and replaced with something I never expected to appear. Sometimes I take ideas from those snippets that have been discarded and build a whole new song around them. Each song is different, the way it ends up being created. I guess it’s kind of like painting that way.

The final stages are always the same though. I listen to each track several times on different headphones and speaker systems, just to see how different people will experience the sounds involved. This is usually where I am the most critical of my work, and many tracks are never uploaded, either out of frustration or a thought that something just isn’t quite right and might work itself out later.

What is your advice to other authors regarding how to create a successful portfolio?

Perseverance and creativity are a great place to start, but an open mind and a drive to succeed are really the things that carry you through the days and across that finish line. You can’t know everything, and should therefore be open to other people’s feedback and opinions. We are all learning. And if you aren’t, you may not be paying attention.

I guess one of the most important lessons you can learn in any business, is that you aren’t in business for yourself. You’re in it to serve your customers. If not, it’s just a hobby. If you don’t know what they truly want and need from you, they will go somewhere else. It really is that simple. I can buy a widget from anyone, anywhere. But I choose to buy it from you because of the relationship and what it offers me. I feel it is more basic than supply and demand. It’s very human at its core.

You have to be able to think both critically and creatively at the same time. And there is also the fact that if nobody knows you have something to sell, you will never sell it. You need to engage your audience, be an active part of the community and market yourself intelligently. This is slightly different for every case, but the basics still apply. Always be positive, be honest, be accessible and approachable, be productive, be accommodating and leave your ego at the door.

What do you do to market your files?

I do my best to upload a few tracks a week to keep a steady amount of exposure within the AudioJungle community, I have a website and blog, I use Twitter, Facebook and other social services, I attend local meet-ups and industry events and I engage in my fare share of guerrilla marketing tactics as well. ;)

I also pay close attention to the trending of online activity and traffic sources, and track my analytics. If you keep doing the same thing each time and it doesn’t work, it never will. You need to be willing and able to change your approach completely, if necessary. And this requires you to have a working knowledge of how, why and where people find you. I engage in real conversations with people whenever possible, asking them for their unfiltered feedback and ask how I can better serve them in the future, knowing full well that I am not perfect and want to get better with every transaction made.

What are your three favorite files, and why do you like them?

Wow this question is much tougher to answer than expected. I guess because I become so invested in each piece I release, that it is hard to get away from that. So I will name three that have received some feedback that stuck with me.

Children’s Storytime is a track that I never anticipated recording. It is a far cry from my normal style and it surprised me just how much I liked it once I heard it up on the website. People enjoy it and I am looking forward to seeing how it gets used in their projects.

Download audio file (preview.mp3)

Ancient Club keeps coming up in conversation over the past couple week, so I feel I should include it here, too. It kind of sums up just how ridiculous some of my brainstorming questions/sessions can be at times. This track is the result of some downright silly questions, like “What if aboriginal tribes had clubs out in the middle of nowhere, back in the day…?” I know. And yet I still get songs out there that people seem to enjoy. Go figure. :)

Download audio file (preview.mp3)

Hidden Agenda is one of those cinematic tracks I have available through AudioJungle that is full of mystery, intrigue and a whole lot of tension. I find that music like this paints such a vivid image on its own that you can’t help but be drawn in. So it’s no wonder how much life it can bring to another project. It has a simple repetition to it that seems to fit nicely into all kinds of scenes. People tell me it sounds like a song from an X-Files episode.

Download audio file (preview.mp3)

Apart from yourself, who is your favorite marketplace author, and why do you like them?

Dang. That is a tough question. I am constantly blown away by the talent you can find here, and am actually quite proud to be a part of it. I think my favorite author varies from day-to-day honestly. Today it is Tim McMorris. If you asked me yesterday or tomorrow, I’m not sure what my answer might be.

What do you do in your spare time?

Spend as much time with my beautiful and loving wife as possible. You can usually find me cooking up a nice meal, out in nature, in the company of good friends, or seeing a good show and I am constantly on the prowl for something new to learn. I guess I’m a bit of a knowledge junkie.

This has really been a lot of fun doing this interview. Thank you for having me here, and thanks to all of my supporters out there that make it possible for me to keep doing it. I really do appreciate it!
