Getresponse Signup Form For Joomla Site

I need a signup form for getresponse (www.getresponse.com) that I can put into a Joomla site and that will allow people to choose which of my getresponse campaigns they want to sign up to. I have 4 campaigns, but only want to use one form (the standard getresponse forms only allow you to attach one campaign to each form, meaning I’d need 4 different forms on my site!).

I want the form to have name and email fields, as well as a dropdown menu so they can select which campaign they want to sign up to.

The iPhone belt buckle holster is for the cowboy in you

What do you get for the cowboy who has everything? How about a huge brass iPhone belt buckle/holster? The $300 brass or aluminum cage sheaths an iPhone 4 or 4S and allows the wearer to choose how he displays his phone- either as a belt buckle or a pocket holster. Either way, should he ever be challenged to an iPhone duel, the top of the holster easily flips up for quick draw access to the iPhone. John Marston, lookout!

October 16th is "Steve Jobs Day" in California, private memorial planned

California Governor Jerry Brown tweeted Friday night that tomorrow, Sunday October 16th, will be “Steve Jobs Day” in the state. The honor comes just eleven days after the Apple co-founder died due to complications from pancreatic cancer.

October 16 is also the date when Apple will hold an invitation-only memorial service for Jobs at Stanford University. Invites to the memorial, which is closed to the public, were sent to “a range of people” including “prominent Silicon Valley executives,” according to an Apple spokesperson.

Later this week, Apple will hold another private event — this time for Apple employees — on its Cupertino campus. The October 19th event will be “celebration of [Steve’s] life,” according to an email sent by Tim Cook.

Apple fans around the world who want to express their memories and gratitude for Steve Jobs can do so by sending an email to Apple at [email protected].

Review: ioSafe SoloPRO fireproof external hard drive

If there’s one thing I always tell people who work with valuable, irreplaceable data it’s “back up your files!” Thankfully most of us do back up our data. We usually use an external hard drive. Or sometimes, we only rely on cloud-based storage, like Dropbox or Apple’s soon to be defunct iDisk. However, if any of you work with very valuable data — data which would leave your business or family in dire straits if lost — I highly recommend you buy an ioSafe SoloPRO external hard drive.

I’ve been testing out the 1 terabyte USB 3.0 version ioSafe SoloPRO for about a week and I can’t imagine carrying out future data backups without it now. You see, the ioSafe SoloPRO isn’t your typical external hard drive. For one thing, it weighs almost 18 pounds. That’s because it’s built like a tank and it’s the size of a small printer. I know, I know, people like their external hard drive sleek and sexy. And actually, the ioSafe SoloPRO is rather sexy looking. But it has its mass and bulk because the drive is built for one thing and one thing only – protecting your data from physical harm.

Data protection: Cloud storage versus physical storage.

This week I’ve debated with a friend of mine who says people who want true security for their data should just back it up to a cloud-based service. That way no matter what happens at their location, their files are always secure elsewhere. While my friend does have a point to some extent, there are some very important facts people should consider before thinking cloud-based backups are the best way to go for their most important data.

First off, people need to think about cost and speed. I have another friend who produces videos for a living. For him, backing up hundreds of gigabytes of video to a cloud-based solution would be both time consuming (for the upload) and costly (hundreds of gigabytes of cloud storage costs a lot in annual fees). For huge file backups, external hard drives are the way to go.

Second: easy access. I’m also a big fan of externals for sensitive data like wills and contracts. If you’ve got such data saved to an online storage solution and something should happen to you, would your friends, coworkers, or family know how to access it? If all they have to do is plug in an external, there’s really not many accessibility problems that could arise. But as my video producing friend found out, your data on those hard drives is only as safe as the hard drives themselves. Even though he backed up his video files to three different drives, everything was lost when his studio caught fire.

The drive.

The ioSafe SoloPRO is both fireproof and waterproof – and when looking for the ultimate in data protection, you want both of those. If your office or house catches fire, the ioSafe SoloPRO enclosure can be engulfed in flames and hit head on with a fire hose. The hard drive that resides inside will come out without a scratch on it. As a matter of fact, the “fireproofed computer” mentioned in this article was actually an ioSafe drive, according to the company.

The ioSafe SoloPRO I tested was the 1 terabyte USB 3.0 version (it also comes in eSATA and USB 2.0 flavors up to 3TBs). It worked fine on my MacBook Pro’s USB 2.0 ports and will work on any Mac running all the way back to OS 8.6 or later. As for the beating the drive can take, it can survive in temperatures as high as 1550°F for up to 30 minutes. It can also survive submerged in ten feet of water for up to three days. Also, the drive includes up to $2500 in forensic recovery services should such services be required. Best of all, the SoloPRO is Time Machine compatible, and using it with Apple’s backup software is like encasing your Mac in an armored safe each night.

This obviously isn’t a drive for everyone, especially those that need to transport a lot of data from one location to another. As I’ve said, the drive weighs almost 18 pounds and won’t exactly fit into a pocket. However, if you run a business where your digital files are of the utmost importance, or if you simply want to ensure that all your family’s documents and photos can survive almost anything, I highly recommend the ioSafe SoloPRO.

ioSafe is a relatively new company in the storage scene, only having been around since 2005. However, its hard drives are some of the best I’ve ever tried (I’m also testing out a bullet-proof, portable dual-Firewire 800 external of theirs).

Since it’s at the higher-end of the hard drive world, you won’t find the ioSafe SoloPRO in Apple Stores just yet, but you can buy the 1 TB USB 3.0 version that I tried directly from ioSafe and also on Amazon for US$249.

You got your iPhone 4S. Now what?

I don’t. Have one, that is. I’m still waiting. In the meantime, here’s some Q&A from today’s in-box.

Q: Just got my iPhone 4S, finally got hooked up to AT&T and I tried to fire up Siri. The old Voice Control app shows up. What gives? Have you heard of this with anyone else?

A: You need to enable Siri in Settings.

Q: What you can say to Siri?

A: A *lot*. For example, you can try out “How much wood could a wood chuck chuck if a wood chuck could chuck wood”, “Siri, tell me a story”, “Open the Pod Bay Doors, HAL”, etc. See our round-up of Siri examples.

Q: For those of us mere mortals who have waited till Friday the 14th to get our new iPhones delivered, one of the first things to be done is to get apps & data transferred from current iPod or iPhone to the new iPhone. I have just sync’ed my device so the backup in iTunes is up to date. Now, what is the procedure to ‘restore’ everything to the new iPhone?

A: iTunes will ask you about it automatically. You don’t have to do anything special. Just get past activation, and iTunes will prompt you.

Q: The 4S is out of range for me. I bought the second generation iPod touch when it came out a few years ago but seeing as it is not compatible with iOS 5, I was thinking of getting the new one although isn’t it just the same as last years model, so I’m wondering if I should by it?

A: Yup. Same as last year’s model. Consider buying a refurb unit instead if money is an issue.

BreakTime: A Timed Recess From Your Computer

You know how everybody says you’re supposed to take about a short break from the computer every hour if you want to keep your sanity? Chances are you’ve heard of this but don’t really practice it. Time moves differently while you are working on a computer, and sometimes it’s hard to keep track of how long you’ve been in front of the screen.

Today we are reviewing an app called BreakTime that reminds you of when you are supposed to take breaks from the computer. But how well does it work at keeping you away from the computer once you have those scheduled breaks? Let’s see.

How Does It Work?

In Action

In Action

BreakTime is a very lightweight and simple app that sits in your menu bar, quietly counting away the minutes until you need to take a break from your computer. You have a few settings that you can tweak to decide how often you want to take your breaks and how long you want them to last. After you tweak them, the clock will start counting away the minutes until your next scheduled break. You can check the time left until your next break by clicking on the menu bar icon, which will also show you an on/off button and a progress bar.

A few seconds before your break starts, the clock will automatically show a countdown so that you are aware that your computer is going to be disabled for a little while. Once the countdown is over, your screen will fade out a little and in the center you’ll be shown a “break window” with a small progress bar, some snooze buttons with one, five and ten minute settings and a “Done” button which will disable the break. After your set time is done, the progress bar will turn from blue to green, but the clock will keep going.

Now, there are two ways to go around using this app. If you use the “Enforce” mode, you won’t be able to quit a break in the middle, in fact, you can do nothing but wait until the break is over. If you do not activate this feature, then you can stop the break anytime you’d like. There’s also a very cool feature where the app will monitor your activity, and if it doesn’t detect any, then it will reschedule your breaks as it thinks you’ve already taken them (you can deactivate this feature if you’d like).

Do You Need It?

Preferences

Preferences

If you spend a lot of time on the computer because of your job (I’m pretty sure I just described all of you), and are concerned about your mental/physical health during your work hours, then you could give this app a try and see if you enjoy the little breaks it “enforces” you to take. I like to think of it as a little game where you have to work as much as you can before the clock runs out and if you run out of time, it allows you to do other interesting stuff while you are on a break.

You should be careful with how you use your break times. If you are going to use them to check your phone or make some advances on your newest iPhone game, then it really isn’t doing much work at keeping you away from the screen, but distracting you from your work. Sure, finding some time to check on your messages or playing a little game might be useful at dealing with stress, but ideally you’d want to use this time to take a break from electricity altogether and go find a glass of water, someone to talk to, and you know, stretch your legs.

You should also be careful if this app is making you less productive at work. People work differently, and I know a lot of people (me included) that find it very hard to concentrate on something after they have been interrupted at it. When I used this app, once the break started I tended to end my “productivity time” and once the break was over I would use the time to check my Twitter feed and my email before going back to work.

Conclusion

I’m always a fan of these type of strange apps that want to help you do something like focus more on what you are doing or keep you away from working or procrastinating too much. The thing is, I always use them for just a little while and then I get bored with them and they end up getting lost in my Applications folder.

For example, FocusBar seemed like a good idea at first, but I haven’t really used it since a few days after I got it. Granted, these two are different type of apps, but they fall into the same kind of weird productivity app category.

I could see myself using this app for a few days and being excited about it, but once the novelty was over I’d probably just go back to not using it. It’s a pleasure to use, the design is nice, the idea behind it is great and the details included in it are all well-thought, which makes it not be as annoying as it could; but I just think with time this app would become a burden and it’d be something else to distract me from doing real work. It’s a good idea, but it’s probably not for me, and especially not for the type of work that I do, which needs a lot of concentration for long periods of time. What about you? What do you think of these type of apps? Would you use this app, or do you use anything similar?
