Collection Digitization Projec

We had found that the sorting of images by file
name before linking them to Embark was taking longer that anticipated and
that I thought it could be automated. What I would hope to have is a
program that does the following.

Allow me to specify a folder where the images to be sorted are located on
the cantor-xserve. Then the program would check the first 5-characters of
the each image file name and the last 3 characters of the file name.
Finally, based of the first 5 and the last 3 characters the program would
move the files to the appropriate folder also on the Cantor X-serve. Most
of our file names are quite consistent but there are a few inconsistent
file names due to old accession numbers that would have to be accounted
for; I could explain there in detail to the programer. Here are some
examples of the consistent file names and what the program would do.

Example 1
File name: 1985.20.11_CDP-web.jpg
Folder where it should go: cantor-xserve/Cantor Annex/Images/1985

Example 2
File name JLS.12011_CDP-pub.tif
Folder where it should go: cantor-xserve/Cantor
Annex/Images/JLS.1000-1999/JLS.1000-1999_pub_images

Example 3
File name 1944.25_CDP-2-src.tif
Folder where it should go: cantor-xserve/Cantor
Annex/Images/1944/1944_source_images
