How to Make Amazing Outer Space (Part 2)

This two part tutorial will teach you how to create a image of outer space. In this Part 2 (of two) you will add color, stars, dust and everything else that is still missing on our galaxy.

Final Image Preview

How to Make Amazing Outer Space

Step 1

Open PSD file that was created on Part 1 of this tutorial. Select layers Nebula and Galaxy and merge both layers by going to Layers > Merge Layers (Ctrl+E). We will have now three layers: black, white, and the one with the galaxy. It’s worth noticing that space is very beautiful, all colors can be found in it, so let’s add them into our galaxy. Create a new layer and change the layer Blending Mode to Color. After that select a soft-edged Brush Tool, opacity 10%, 300 pixels in diameter, color #5a78cc and paint it arbitrarily.

How to Make Amazing Outer Space 2

How to Make Amazing Outer Space 2

Step 2

Keep Brush Tool selected and change color to #ff0000 to add red color.

How to Make Amazing Outer Space 3

Step 3

Keep Brush Tool selected and change color to #fff000 to add yellow color.

How to Make Amazing Outer Space 4

Step 4

Create a new layer. On this new layer we create the centre of the galaxy. Select a soft-edged brush, 500 pixels in diameter, color #ffffb7, opacity 100%.

How to Make Amazing Outer Space 5

Step 5

Change the brush diameter to 300, white color (#ffffff) and apply.

How to Make Amazing Outer Space 6

Step 6

Shape the shining to the galaxy outline with the help of Edit > Transform > Scale:

How to Make Amazing Outer Space 7

Step 7

Rotate using Edit > Transform > Rotate:

How to Make Amazing Outer Space 8

Step 8

Any galaxy needs stars and our galaxy is not an exception. To bring bright stars to the canvas, create a new layer, select a soft-edged Brush Tool, opacity 100%, white color (#ffffff) and open Brush Panel to adjust settings (Windows > Brush or press F5).

How to Make Amazing Outer Space 9

Select Shape Dynamics option and change settings.

How to Make Amazing Outer Space 10

Select Scattering option and change settings.

How to Make Amazing Outer Space 11

And on Transfer option update opacity to 100% and change Control to Pen Pressure.
Important: On older Photoshop versions there isn´t any Transfer option but Other Dynamics option is available and this is where you update settings.

How to Make Amazing Outer Space 12

With the help of this brush, change its diameter according to the situation and your taste and we can create stars along the outline of the galaxy and slightly beyond its bounds.

How to Make Amazing Outer Space 13

Step 9

It´s worth remembering, that the closer the stars the bigger they appear to be on the picture. So you need to keep changing brush size.

How to Make Amazing Outer Space 14

Step 10

There is also its own nebula around the stars. Duplicate the layer (Crtl+J) and blur the layer that is below using Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur:

How to Make Amazing Outer Space 15

How to Make Amazing Outer Space 16

Step 11

Stars have color too. Select the Gradient Tool and set up following presets:

How to Make Amazing Outer Space 17

Go back to original stars layer and select stars. Create new layer and apply gradient.

How to Make Amazing Outer Space 18

Move this layer below both layers that contain stars.

Step 12

Apply Soft Light Blending Mode for the layer with the gradient.

How to Make Amazing Outer Space 19

Step 13

To be more realistic our galaxy lacks dust. To create dust we select standard Dry Brush, opacity 100%, black color (#000000), change the diameter according to the situation. We apply strokes along the galaxy shape on a new layer.

How to Make Amazing Outer Space 20

Step 14

Now we adjust the dust outline using the Eraser Tool, select a soft-edged brush, opacity 50%, diameter according to the situation.

How to Make Amazing Outer Space 21

Step 15

Then we remove hard edges of brush strokes and get realistic dust.

How to Make Amazing Outer Space 22

Step 16

Now let´s apply color to the dust layer. We treat the dust in the same way as the stars, select the layer with the dust and apply the same gradient.

How to Make Amazing Outer Space 23

Step 17

Apply the Multiply Blending Mode for the layer with colored dust.

How to Make Amazing Outer Space 24

Step 18

It remains only to add volume to our image, we select a soft-edged brush, 900 pixels in diameter, opacity 30%, black color (#000000) and darken the image above and slightly on the edges on a new layer.

How to Make Amazing Outer Space 25

Step 19

We can say the galaxy is ready but we can add some more details. Let it be very big stars or constellations. Create a new layer, select the Brush Tool and brush with 70 pixels in diameter, opacity 100%, color #6191dc.

How to Make Amazing Outer Space 26

Step 20

Let´s change brush color to white (#ffffff).

How to Make Amazing Outer Space 27

Step 21

Deform slightly using Edit > Transform > Scale and Edit > Transform > Rotate.

How to Make Amazing Outer Space 28

Final Image

It´s possible not to deform and so it depends on your taste. Add a few stars on the same principle.

How to Make Amazing Outer Space (Part 1)

This two part tutorial will teach you how to create a image of outer space. In this Part 1 (of two) you will create the galaxy and the nebula.

Final Image Preview

How to Make Amazing Outer Space

Step 1

Let´s start our tutorial by creating a new document with 1920×1200 pixels (72 dpi) and fill canvas with color #000000.

How to Make Amazing Outer Space 1

Step 2

Create a new layer above the black one and fill it with pure white color (#ffffff).

How to Make Amazing Outer Space 2

Step 3

We have now two layers: the black one and the white above it. For the layer with white color we change the Layer Blending Mode to Dissolve, layer opacity 1% (no more than this amount) and get something resembling space.

How to Make Amazing Outer Space 3

Step 4

Create a new layer on top and give a name to the layer, for example “Nebula”. (Note: Right now we will be creating the galaxy but in the future this layer will hold the nebula). Select the Brush Tool, with a soft-edged brush, opacity 100%, 125 pixels in diameter, white color (#ffffff) and simply apply several brush strokes on the new layer as shown in the screenshot:

How to Make Amazing Outer Space 4

Step 5

Apply the Filter > Distort > Twirl:

How to Make Amazing Outer Space 5

How to Make Amazing Outer Space 6

Step 6

Deform the result a bit with the help of Edit > Transform > Perspective:

How to Make Amazing Outer Space 7

Step 7

Further on we apply Edit > Transform > Scale:

How to Make Amazing Outer Space 8

Step 8

And then we apply Edit > Transform > Rotate:

How to Make Amazing Outer Space 9

Step 9

This shape suits to be the galaxy, but we will improve it. Apply Filter > Blur > Motion Blur:

How to Make Amazing Outer Space 10

How to Make Amazing Outer Space 11

Step 10

And apply the Twirl filter once again Filter > Distort > Twirl:

How to Make Amazing Outer Space 12

How to Make Amazing Outer Space 13

Step 11

We deform the galaxy again using Edit > Transform > Perspective:

How to Make Amazing Outer Space 14

Step 12

Scale the galaxy to the desired size using Edit > Transform > Scale:

How to Make Amazing Outer Space 15

Step 13

Rotate it a bit with the help of Edit > Transform > Rotate:

How to Make Amazing Outer Space 16

Step 14

We now have our galaxy. Copy the layer by pressing Ctrl+J and name it “Galaxy”.

How to Make Amazing Outer Space 17

Step 15

Any galaxy contains nebula, so let´s create one. Temporarily hide Galaxy layer (eyeball) and select layer Nebula. This layer should be blurred with the help of Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur.

How to Make Amazing Outer Space 18

How to Make Amazing Outer Space 19

Step 16

Choose the Smudge Tool (Strength: 31%) and brush Spatter 59 (it’s a standard Photoshop brush), set diameter to 150 and begin stretching the nebula out a bit in the galaxy direction, at the same time we can change the brush diameter sometimes, for the galaxy not to be uniform.

How to Make Amazing Outer Space 20

How to Make Amazing Outer Space 21

Step 17

We switch on visibility of the layer Galaxy.

How to Make Amazing Outer Space 22

Step 18

Keep on changing the layer with the nebula, apply Filter > Distort > Wave:

How to Make Amazing Outer Space 23

How to Make Amazing Outer Space 24

Step 19

Now we copy the layer with the nebula by pressing Ctrl+J. After that, merge the two layers which have the nebula into one using Ctrl+E.

How to Make Amazing Outer Space 25

Step 20

With the help of Eraser Tool, we make the nebula more opaque to adjust its shape and transparency. The edge of the nebula is more transparent, but on the borders of the galaxy quite the contrary, though it depends on somebody´s taste, it´s advisable to use the brush with 500 pixels in diameter and opacity 45. Also we should slightly adjust opacity on the layer with the galaxy, especially on the edges.

Step 12

After that we have to feather the selection borders a little bit. Use Select > Modify > Feather to feather selection about 5 pixels.

How to Create Symmetrical Abstraction 17

Step 13

Ok, then get ou the Eraser Tool (Opacity: 30%) and a soft round brush about 50 pixels to make small clean work. But please be very careful with the Eraser Tool cause if you will apply to much, the icon will not be looking good.

Resources

Step 1

Open up the photo in Photoshop. Go to Image > Image Size and resize it to 600×750 pixels.

Step 2

For this tutorial i will need to create a grid before we can start with stylizing our photo. Create a new document with size of 55×55 pixels and draw black and white dots by using Pencil Tool (Size: 1px) as on picture below.

Step 3

Then go to Edit > Define Pattern and save it as pattern. After that you can close this document without saving. Go back to main document, create new layer and fill it with Paint Bucket Tool by using our created pattern.

Step 4

With pattern layer still selected, change layer to Overlay with opacity of 80%.

Step 5

After that go back to our background layer. All the actions we will be making with it only. Get out the Rectangular Marquee Tool to create selection like on my screenshot below. Hold Shift button to get proportional to the square selection.

Step 6

Apply the Dodge Tool (Brush: 100px, Range: Midtones, Exposure: 30%) for this selected area.

Step 11

In the end I would like to add a few blurred cells without changing brightness.

Step 12

Now let’s add some text. Get out the Horizontal Type Tool (just the regular one) and write out some text with white color. I’ve used the font called Bitsumishi (30 pt, Crisp).

Learn How to Create Liquid Plastic Effect

In this tutorial i will teach how you can create in a few steps the effect of liquid plastic on Photoshop.

Final Image Preview

Step 1

Start tutorial by finding picture to work with. I prefer to use this picture to demonstrate effect on it. Open file.

First thing which you need to do is to unlock the background layer. To do this, double click on the “Background” layer and name it “Mouse”. Move layer a little bit upper, then create new layer under “Mouse” layer named “Background” and fill it with white color

Step 2

Now get color sample from the bottom part of mouse by using Eyedropper Tool. I got color #c3bea3.

Step 3

Select the Pen Tool (Shape layers mode) and try to create shape of falling droplets somewhere on the bottom part of mouse using the same color as we selected before.

Step 4

When our shape is done, just rasterize it with Layer > Rasterize > Shape. Then select the Burn Tool (Brush: 20px, Range: Highlights, Exposure: 40%) and make bottom parts of run a little bit darken.

Step 5

After that select the Dodge Tool (Brush: 25px, Range: Midtones, Exposure: 35%) and make small dodge work in places where the light should fall.

Step 6

Go to Layer > Layer Style and apply the following layer styles to this layer:

You should get this effect:

Step 7

Create a new layer above and merge it with previous to get all the effects in one layer. After that select the Eraser Tool and soft round brush about 50 pixels to remove visible border between current layer and mouse.

Step 8

Then select the Dodge Tool (Brush: 60px, Range: Midtones, Exposure: 10%) to remove color difference between keyboard layer and run layer.

Step 9

As we can see, keyboard surface has some noise on the surface. It means that we have to add the same texture to the run surface. Select this layer with Select > Load Selection, then create new layer and fill it with black color.

Step 10

After that remove selection with Ctrl+D and apply Filter > Noise > Add Noise with similar settings to these:

How to create Caramel Text Effect on Photoshop

I am going to share with you how to make a caramel text effect by using some layer styles. First, find some suitable background to demonstrate our text effect on it.

Final Image Preview

Step 1

Create a new document with size of 1000 x 500 pixels with default settings (RGB, 72 dpi, white background).

Step 2

I am going to use a image to create caramel effect. I found one good image at stock.xchange for this tutorial. Open it and go to Image > Image Size and change width to 1000 px. After that copy it to our document as new layer (i named this layer “Caramel effect”).

Step 3

Create a new layer called “Text” and select the Horizontal Type Tool (T) with these settings: Arial, Black, 230 px, Smooth. Write your text on the middle of canvas, for example “Photoshop” in whatever color you want.

Step 4

We are now going to create caramel text effect. First set up Fill to 0% for this text layer.

Step 5

Go to Layer > Layer Style and apply the following layer styles to the text layer:

After applying all these Blending Options we should get something like my image below:

Step 6

Now I would like to increase contrast on the text. For this duplicate text layer (Ctrl+J) and then create new layer named “Filter”. Merge both layers (new text layer and “Filter” layer) to get all text effects in one layer.
After that apply Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur with next presets:

Step 7

Change layer mode to Soft Light and Opacity to 50%.
