Corona On Android

Lately Android has been on my radar. It’s gone from easy to ignore to something impossible to ignore.

I’ve tried to ignore it because I don’t care for Java. It’s a fine language, but it’s not for me. So, I’ve been quietly learning Scala to use instead.

Then this came across my inbox today: Corona, the Flash-like way of creating iPhone apps in Lua, is releasing an Android version.

The Ansca Mobile team has done a good job creating a viable alternative to Flash on the iPhone; interesting that they’re broadening to make their stuff run on Android.

Using App Gifting for Promotion

Natalia Luckyanova, half of iPhone Gaming’s cutest couple, wrote to share their experience giving away 1000 copies of Harbor Master using the new Gift-This capability of the App Store.

Here’s what she had to say, emphasis added by me:

We decided to try a mass giveaway to see how gifting really works. We gave away 1,000 copies of Harbor Master to promote the upcoming Harbor Master HD for iPad. This got a lot of very heated reactions from other developers (mostly worrying that gifted apps affect rank and this would allow anyone to buy their way into the top 100 apps).

Interestingly, we found that gifts do NOT count towards an app’s rank at all. Also, awarding that many gifts definitely took a lot of time. However, it was a great experience for us nonetheless. We got some publicity for Harbor Master HD and got a lot of love from the player community. If nothing else, app gifting will help not to be limited to 50 promo codes when trying to share an app with media and the community.

Tutorial: Share App Data Through E-mail Attachments

There are many different reasons why you would want to share app data through E-mail with users, for one thing it could be used as a way to import data collected in other applications, another could simply be because you want to include a system for users to safely backup data used within your app.

There are several steps involved in the process, for one you need to modify the info.plist file to allow the file type used for storing your app’s data, and you will also need to know how to import data from the E-mails, and create that data used for sending the E-mails.

Ray Wenderlich has put together a great step-by-step tutorial on doing exactly this, check out:
How To Import And Export Data Via Email In Your iOS App

Looks like some very useful, and not too difficult (at least with Ray’s tutorial!) functionality to add into your apps.

Should You Buy an iPad Instead of a MacBook?

The iPad has been notoriously labeled an oversized iPod Touch by countless skeptics, reviewers and even owners since its first day on the market. Despite its high success rate, I still encounter people daily who don’t even understand why the iPad exists or who it’s targeted toward.

Today we’ll discuss why the iPad is flying off shelves, who should consider getting one and why it beats a MacBook for many consumers.

For Apple Fanboys Only?

The first snide remark posited by skeptics is that the iPad only exists for the hopeless Apple fanboy types with too much money on their hands. These legendary and resourceful individuals own every iPod ever made and couldn’t wait to add a shiny new iPad to their collection of MacBooks and Mac Pros.

screenshot

If Only Such A Button Existed

To be fair, this category does exist. I’m admittedly a complete Apple addict who drools over every new product launch even though I can’t actually afford to run out and grab it all on launch day (I’m still using a 2007 MacBook and a first generation iPod Touch!).

However, if you actually know a few typical Mac “power users” that already have a Mac Pro for home and a MacBook Pro for the road, you’ll notice that many of these people don’t even plan on buying an iPad in the near future.

The reason is that many professionals, such as graphic designers who live and breathe Photoshop, simply can’t use the iPad for much work activity and therefore are keen on sticking with the more powerful Apple products.

So if the primary target isn’t the professional who already owns ten grand in Apple equipment, who is the iPad for and how is this market different than the laptop market?

Why Not Just Get a MacBook?

Take a look at the specs on the latests MacBooks and MacBook Pros. 2-4GBs of RAM, hard drives with hundreds of gigs of storage, super fast processors; these are impressive machines.

This kind of power is absolutely necessary to run many of today’s popular Mac applications. The speed and versatility of Apple’s line of notebooks makes them perfect for college students and working professionals that spend a great deal of their day in front of a screen.

But what about everyone else? How many users out there do little more than browse the web (primarily Facebook) and check their email? Why does the typical person need Photoshop or even Microsoft Office? Your average soccer mom or manual labor worker isn’t exactly spending their Friday nights throwing PowerPoint parties.

The truth is, many people are drawn to the style and quality associated with Macs but really don’t need the $1,000+ machine that they end up with. This is especially true for people that already own a desktop computer and just want something to take with them on the road.

What Can the iPad Do?

If you’re not convinced, think about your parents or even your grandparents. What do they do on their computers that the iPad can’t accomplish just as well or better?

The iPad can browse the web (Flash excluded) and even provides a richer, more pleasant experience than a desktop computer in this arena. You can use Facebook and Twitter, send and receive email, plan your day, organize your contacts, play games, watch movies, create documents, read books, and do a million other things. In the near future this functionality is likely to extend to include photo/video creation and editing.

screenshot

The iPad is amazing for web content

The relevant question becomes not what the iPad can do, but what can’t it do? The Internet has become the quintessential piece of our computing lives and when a $499 device provides it in such a beautiful format, I can’t help but wonder how many non-professional computer users need anything more.

For those that do need more, the App Store fills almost every gap imaginable, often without the need to spend a single cent. Want to keep a database of all your random daily information? Try Evernote. Want to access the files on your desktop? Grab Dropbox. Want to create a custom planet and rule over an entire race of beings? Check out GodFinger. All of these are completely free apps that come as a bonus to simply owning the device.

Closing Thoughts

Though I would love to be able to end this post by saying that I can completely function on an iPad alone, it simply isn’t true. Even for structuring simple blog posts I often take web screenshots and then crop/resize/edit them in Photoshop, a task that could probably be done on an iPad but not in the seconds it takes me to do it on my laptop.

Further, as a designer and photographer, there are simply way too many processor and hard drive intensive tasks that I do on a daily basis to work from an iPad. However, Apple isn’t targeting me with the iPad, but rather everyone else. Interestingly enough, while many scratch their heads and wonder what niche of consumers the iPad satisfies, I can’t help but wonder if everything else will one day become the niche.

Designers, photographers, videographers, musicians, these are niches that need powerful workhorse machines. The iPad may not perfectly suit the needs for anyone of these categories, but perhaps it’s the perfect device for everyone else. Maybe the recent history of making computers faster and stronger will give way to an era of devices that are convenient, practical, fun and perhaps even a little “magical.”

Leave a comment below and tell us how many people you can think of in your own life that don’t really do much beyond browsing the web on their computers. Do you think the iPad would be a better solution for these consumers? Why or why not?

Stumbling on Your iPhone with StumbleUpon

There is a huge amount of content on the web. Billions and billions of pages all waiting to be discovered. Millions of pages are being added everyday. The problem is finding the little guys. The guys who don’t have an audience because their voice is swallowed in the sea of information. The guys who turn out pithy one liners and insightful pieces.

Stumbleupon is an online service for discovering content on the web. By hitting “Stumble” you are whisked to photos, videos, comics, articles and more about your favorite topics.

Once you log in, you are taken to the home screen. This is the control panel for all your stumbling. We’ll start at the top and work our way down.

screenshot

StumbleUpon Home Screen

Basic Stumbling

This screen is the meat of the app. In the top navigation bar bar we have our main tools. First, we can go back home. Next, we can give the stumble a thumbs up, or a thumbs down. Finally, we have the Stumble button. This takes us on to another stumble.

screenshot

Stumbling

The bottom toolbar hosts the buttons for interacting with the stumble. First, we have the standard web view controls. Back, forward, refresh. Next we have the action button. This lets us send the stumble to different social networks and services. There’s the standard stuff, Facebook, Email, Twitter. And then there’s some cooler actions. Instapaper, copy the link to the clipboard, and send to Tumblr. You can turn on and off as many of these services as you want.

screenshot

Sharing Options

The final button reveals an entirely new content view. We can see how many times the page has been viewed by other Stumble Upon users, and what categories it’s in. We can switch into a new view by hitting the “Liked By” button. This shows us a grid of users and their profile pictures. Finally, you can read reviews of the stumble to see what other people thought. You can also write your own with the little pencil button.

screenshot

Adding a Review

Now lets go back to the main control panel and explore some more.

Specific Sites and Content

screenshot

Specific Sites

Just below the “Start Stumbling” button is a quad button complex. Each of these lets us go stumbling for the different content types and sites.

You can choose from:

  • Photos This choice takes us only to photos.
  • News This stumbles us to various news sites, CNN, BBC, etc.
  • Flickr Only flickr pictures.
  • Youtube Videos from Youtube

Remember, each of these four choices also factors in your topic choices. This makes them very powerful. I really like using the news category. My topics are all centric around computers. Programming, hardware, and hacking.

Lets head back to the home screen.

Topics

screenshot

Topics

At the bottom of the screen we find a tableview with all of our topics. Touching one of these sends you stumbling through only that topic. At the bottom of the table view is a link for editing your topics. This pulls up a new modal window for adding more topics to your account.

Following and Favorites

screenshot

Favorites

When you’re on the home screen, two buttons are added to the toolbar. The first is a little star icon. This takes you to a list of all your favorite finds. Tapping on an individual item takes you to it.

The second button takes you to a list of people you’re following. This produces a stream of your friend’s latest favorites. Again, tapping an item takes you to it in the stumble viewer.

Applause & Criticism

Stumble Upon is great, but there are a few hiccups. The scroll bars can get wonky. The horizontal bar can be present, even if it’s not needed, and it collides with the vertical bar causing issues. Also, and I’m nit picking here, but some of the interfaces can be a bit raw. For example, the stumble detail view.

Unfortunately, the app chooses a web view over a set of native controls many times. This is very frustrating and awkward. For instance, adding more topics to your account. Too many links and check boxes to click. Some of the main features aren’t available in the app either. Like following other users.

The Stumble Upon service is fantastic. I didn’t expect much, just another suggestion network, but I’ve discovered some great stuff. The ability to find interesting pieces based on interests is tremendous. Ever more, Stumble Upon’s library is based on user submissions. The more votes an item has, the more you see it. Stumble Upon is a team of like minded fellows donating their free time to filtering the best content on the web. Seriously, give it a try.

Wrap Up

Overall, Stumble Upon is truly a great app. You can do almost everything you can do in the web interface right in the app. There are a few kinks, but it’s a great way to find things on the topics you are interested in. Things to make you laugh and things to make you think. It’s perfect for your down time. I highly recommend this app.

Microsoft joins Apple in stance against Blu-ray

Apple has a surprising ally in its campaign of apathy against Sony’s Blu-ray disc format. Microsoft, of all companies, has also stepped out with a passive-aggressive stance against the standard, as UK head of Xbox gaming head Steven McGill says that “Blu-ray is going to be passed by as a format.” He says that Microsoft was right to stick with the older DVD format for its game consoles, and that with the rise of streaming content and the infrastructure to deliver it, there’s no more need for a disc-based format any longer.

Apple would probably agree, given the recent introduction of the Apple TV and its streaming content possibilities. Apple and Jobs alike have never been interested in Blu-ray as a format — originally, the reason was given that they just wanted to see whether HD-DVD or Blu-ray would become the preferred standard, but at this point, with iTunes moving more and more away from physical media entirely, it seems unlikely that Apple will court Sony and its proprietary format at all. So on this issue, at least, Apple and Microsoft appear to have found some common ground.

Apple raking in the mobile profits

While taking a look at the Fortune Magazine online tech blog i saw some comments by Canaccord Genuity about Apple profits in the mobile market. They are a head-turner.

Apple mobile profits are stunning, and even better when compared to the rest of the industry. The really interesting item is that Nokia, Samsung and LG combined sold about 400 million handsets worldwide for the first 6 months of the year, and together those 3 firms garnered 32% of the profits in that sector.

Meanwhile, Apple sold 17 million mobile devices over the same period, and snagged 39% of industry profits. Wow — Steve and friends must be doing something right. It’s especially notable because Apple wasn’t even in the cellphone business until 2007. Sure Android is coming up fast, and may pass Apple in smartphone sales, but in terms of profit Apple has everyone else on the run.

The Pocket God Update Song, by Jonathan Mann

Pocket God is still rolling along — it was one of the first big original iPhone games out there, and more than any other title on the App Store, Bolt Creative has been able to both keep the app popular with constant updates and content additions, and even license the app elsewhere in the form of comics (and presumably other media, if they can swing it).

Here’s another example of that — Bolt posted this video Steve Jobs’ favorite new singer songwriter Jonathan Mann (he of the extremely awkward iPhone Antenna song played at the Apple event a while back) singing a new tune about the game and its fans’ constant requests for updates and new content. The song was commissioned to show off the new Dance Pack content, which lets your little islanders boogie down for 99 cents.

It’s cute. We’ve heard this from the Doodle Jump folks as well — one of the best things that App Store developers can do for their apps is provide a string of content updates, as those both keep current fans interested, and do well to drive new purchases of the app. Of course, it sounds like Bolt is a little stressed out over all the requests, but the app is doing so well that they have to be happy with it.
