Apple Introduces the iPod Ninja

A little more than a week after Apple CEO Steve Jobs was reportedly prevented from taking Ninja stars out of Japan, the company has unveiled the iPod ninja, according to Scoopertino.

Today Apple announced the “dangerously cool” iPod ninja, the last of the new 2010 iPod family. This razor-thin iPod combines the fun of entertainment with the thrill of lethal weaponry. And it’s super-easy to buy.

“iPod ninja fits into that sweet spot between the iPod touch and a small handgun,” says Apple spokesperson Ted Wetmore. “It gives you peace of mind. You can either enjoy your music on the device — or you can fling it at anyone who looks at you funny. With a little practice, you can take down a foe at 50 feet.”

However, there is a dark side to the new iPod. As iPod ninja sales boom, some blogs are already reporting a “death grip” problem even worse than the one that plagued iPhone 4. If you hold iPod ninja in a certain way, you may require immediate medical care.

Raising the bar: Apple announces signal bar extender for iPhone

Cupertino, CA — iPhone signal bars still leave you wanting? Super-size them. Thanks to Apple’s new MegaBars accessory, puny signal bars are a thing of the past.

Like the bigger bars in Apple’s recent software fix, MegaBars has no actual effect on iPhone reception. However, those taller/beefier signal bars will make you brim with new confidence on every call.

“No smartphone available today offers bigger signal bars,” says Apple product manager, Kevin Solstice. “These bars are bigger than Droid X, BlackBerry Bold and Evo 4G combined.”

A perfect match for iPhone 4?s advanced design, MegaBars neatly plugs into your iPhone’s earphone jack. Its high-res Micro-Retina display is visible from 20 feet — so your signal bars will not only calm your personal reception anxieties, they’ll make an impression on friends and colleagues.

MegaBars offers two viewing options. Standard Mode displays five bars at 6.8x normal size. Enhanced Mode offers six bars instead of five. iPhone automatically recalculates signal strength to display it accurately on a six-bar scale.

While Android can’t currently compete with MegaBars, don’t count Google out just yet. Sources tell us that Android 2.3 will in fact be built on a 7-signal-bar foundation — no external devices required.

How to manually set your iPhone, iPad carrier APN using the iPhone Configuration Utility

With the iPhone Configuration Utility you can set your iPad or iPhone carrier’s APN (access point name) manually in case your 3G networking isn’t working properly, which can sometimes happen for developers running beta versions of iOS. It’s a workaround to be sure, but if you need your device on-network for testing and can’t wait for newer betas, sometimes a work around is just what you need.

Follow on after the break for step-by-step instructions.

  • If you haven’t already, download, install, and run the iPhone Configuration Utility from Apple for Windows or Mac OS X.

  • Go to Configuration Profiles under Library in the sidebar and then hit New in the toolbar.

Under General (Mandatory) enter a name for the profile you’re creating, and a unique identifier.

  • Google your carrier’s APN settings. Take note of them.
  • Scroll all the way to the bottom and, under Advanced, fill in your carrier’s APN info.
    • Plug in your iPad or iPhone and then select it in the sidebar under Devices.
    • Pick your profile and hit Install.
    • Approve the installation on your iPhone or iPad.

Enjoy functional 3G networking!

Software Update: iTunes 10.0.1 brings Ping to your music library

An update to iTunes answers the question a lot of us have had since iTunes 10 hit the streets: why can’t I use Ping to like or post about music that’s already in my personal library? iTunes 10.0.1 weighs in at 86.4 MB and also fixes some bugs that have plagued 10.0.

One new feature is the Ping Sidebar, which appears when you’re in your library. As seen below, Ping Sidebar shows the recent activity of your friends or artists you follow in a easily-accessed sidebar on the right side of the screen.

The update doesn’t require a restart, so fire up Software Update on your Mac and download iTunes 10.0.1 soon.

Rumor: New 11.6 inch MacBook Air on tap for this fall

Another new device rumor has popped up, this time about a replacement for the MacBook Air. Apparently, the “old” MacBook Air isn’t selling too well, so Apple is looking at refreshing the line with a smaller device equipped with an 11.6″ (measured diagonally) screen.

A device of this size is beginning to encroach on dangerous territory, considering how Steve Jobs and company have made negative comments about “netbooks” in the past. AppleInsider conjectures that the power and premium price of a more svelte MacBook Air would place it more in the ultraportable category than that of a netbook.

Not only would the new MacBook Air have a smaller display to differentiate it from the existing models, but rumor has it that the device uses a partial carbon-fiber enclosure to make it thinner and lighter. The new Air would allegedly pack an Intel Core i-series ultra-low voltage processor for extra battery life, Additional word from DigiTimes is that orders have been placed with manufacturer Quanta for 400,000 to 500,000 of the new Airs by the end of 2010.

The last time the MacBook Air received a refresh was in June of 2009, when the price dropped on the base model and a faster version with an optional SSD was released.

Introducing the iPod ninja

We here at TUAW fortunately passed on reporting the obviously fake story of Steve Jobs being denied access to Japan because of ninja stars he was reportedly carrying in his luggage. But we did like this fake Apple page from the folks at Scoopertino, featuring the iPod ninja, a brand new throwing star-shaped iPod. If Steve was carrying around ninja stars (and he wasn’t), maybe he was just testing a more weaponized iPod prototype.

For more yuks, be sure to read on about the “death grip” issue (“If you hold iPod ninja in a certain way, you may require immediate medical care.”), and I like the fact that sharing music with the ninja is easy — just wing it across the room at whoever you want to listen in. For just $149 for the 8GB model, Jobs may have something here with this new ninja model — his fake Japanese dismissal was not in vain!

Griffin’s Woogie turns iPhone into a plush

When I was a kid, we just played with regular stuffed animals, and then Teddy Ruxpin came along and blew us all away. But kids these days, they get all kinds of cool stuff. Like look at this thing: they can stick an iPod touch in a “huggable plush accessory” called the Woogie, and run around with it to their heart’s content, watching videos, playing with apps, and, I don’t know, checking the weather, or whatever else it is that kids want to do on an iPod touch.

I especially like Griffin’s selling point on this one — this case is a bonus for the kids, who get a piece of technology that’s a little more fluffy and friendly than Apple’s sleek designs. It’s a bonus for parents too, as it’s much harder to lose or seriously break the iPod when it’s wrapped in the big mass of furry green tentacles.

The $20 accessory even comes with its own app, where kids can preview Sesame Street books and, oh I don’t know, check the weather or something. If I sound a little bitter, it’s probably because I am: Teddy Ruxpin never ran Pocket Frogs for me.

StarDunk going to a free demo model

StarDunk is one of my most favorite apps recently, ever since I covered it back for Daily App a little while ago. It’s an amusing little 2D basketball game, made even more impressive by the fact that it juggles online multiplayer across the world — as you throw baskets, you’re also playing in real-time against other users, and competing with various powerups and stunts for as many points as possible. The game was also notable for being one of the first titles integrated into Game Center, back when that service first arrived on the iPhone.

But the app hasn’t been doing as great as it could be, according to developer Godzilab — first, they had some issues with piracy, and now they’re saying that the game’s just not selling as many copies as they’d hoped.

So the game has gone free — kind of. You can pick it up right now in the App Store for free, and play ten games without paying a single cent. Once you’ve played those games, then you have the option to buy the whole app via in-app purchase for $2.99. That’s not exactly freemium (it’s more of a demo version), but at least players will be able to get a feel for the game and how it works before laying down their three bucks. Personally, I still recommend the game — I bought it on my own and still enjoy a quick game (even though I usually land in the middle of the rankings). But if you’ve been waiting for a chance to try it out, definitely take advantage of the new model.

Code Snippet: Log Meaningful Information About (Nearly) Any Type In Objective-C

Being able to log information about data types at runtime can greatly aid in debugging and tweaking your apps.  With Objective-C you’ll typically doing this with the NSLog statement, unfortunately this can lead to crashes when trying to log non-Objective-C objects such as C strings.

I found out about a very useful macro that allows you to log meaningful information about nearly any type.   It is especially good for scalar expressions at runtime.   In fact the author even calls it the most useful code he’s ever written.

You can find the macro and more details on Vince Gable’s blog at:
The Most Useful Code I’ve Ever Written

This is a very hand macro to have.

Beginner Cocos2D Tutorial On Easily Making A Map Based Game (With Videos)

I’ve been asked in the past if there was a game engine for making 2D platformers, isometric and overhead map based games on the iPhone and iPad.

There are ways to do this with nearly any game engine, but the Cocos2D game engine has support for maps created with the previously mention tiled map editor, and also has added functionality to enable the proper z-ordering of objects on a map with ease (something which can be very tedious).

I was recently told about a beginner Cocos2D tutorial on how to make a map based game.  The tutorial comes in video format from a Youtuber known as thenewboston (who actually has over 900 different video tutorials).  They are very high quality, straightforward, and should be accessible to anyone with a basic knowledge of Objective-C.  Bucky does a great job in making the videos not just informative, but entertaining.

Here’s the first video:

MacTech Conference to offer Apple Certification Exams

Here’s good news for aspiring Mac techs attending the MacTech Conference in November. Attendees will be able to visit a study session and take their Apple Certification Exams right there at the conference. It’s a great idea, as you’ll already be in a “tech-y” mood. Here’s how it works.

Immediately following the last session of MacTech Conference, Apple Authorized Training Center v.2 Consulting is offering a study hour and exam session: November 5th, 12:30-4:00PM, on site at the conference. Conference attendees can take any Apple Certification Exam that is currently available at the time of testing. The cost of the study session and the exam is included in the US$899 registration fee (a $200 value). You’ll find which exams are available here and register here.
