Facebook holding mobile event on Wednesday

TechCrunch reports that Facebook is holding a mobile event on Wednesday. Why is this of interest to Mac users? Maybe part of the event will include the unveiling of the long awaited iPad app. Also, an update to the Facebook iPhone app wouldn’t hurt.

Then again, there’s that Android-based Facebook Phone rumor that’s been flying around. Hey, maybe that Jobs/Zuckerberg dinner may have been Jobs’s way of trying to feel out the Facebook CEO’s plans for his company’s mobile future.

In probably unrelated news, Apple is also reported to be holding a “secret summit” meeting with select iOS developers that begins on Tuesday. Looks like next week is going to be a busy one for mobile news…

Found Footage: The geekiest marriage proposal ever

On October 24th, after a two year relationship, Frank decided to propose to his girlfriend Kasey in romantic Central Park, found in the heart of New York City. Lots of people have done this, but never as geeky. Frank got a bunch of techie friends together to pull off this one-take event. Employing musicians, playing Kasey’s favorite song, a famous bridge, a rowboat, a bunch of iPhones running custom apps and a MacBook Pro to mix it all together, Frank popped the question.

The result was a big “Yes!” and a video that looks like it came out of the credits of Trainspotting. It’s a fun three-minute watch which raises a question: what would have happened if Kasey didn’t catch the ring?

Homemade Angry Birds costumes take flight

We’ve seen Steve Jobs and an iPhone so far, and here come some Angry Birds costumes, from the hit iPhone game. These were all made by crafters (from what looks like fabric, felt, and plastic), and some of them look pretty elaborate. I like the pig costume the best, although dressing yourself in a costume shaped like a large yellow triangular bird has to win points for something.

Very cool, and given how many Angry Birds fans there are out there, it’ll probably nab a lot of candy on Sunday. Are you dressing up in a Mac- or iPhone-related costume this Halloween? Be sure to take pictures and send them in — we’d love to see it.

Trick or Treat with TUAW: iPhone 4 and iPad cases from iSkin

TUAW is giving away a gaggle of ghoulishly good gadgets over the next few days. Be sure to come back every day between now and October 31st for a chance to win. The good part of the giveaways? You don’t need to wear a costume to win ’em.

With the surprisingly active adoption of the iPad in the healthcare industry, as well as recent concerns about how microbes can live happily on iPad screens, wouldn’t it be nice to have something that would at least keep bugs off of most of your device? And since the iPhone 4 is also apt to pick up germs when being used, how about having a way to keep it sanitary as well?

iSkin has a line of iPhone and iPad cases that will make germaphobes happy, since the company has started to use washable silicone materials with embedded Microban antimicrobial protection for some of their products. The iSkin Duo case for iPad and revo4 case for iPhone 4 both use these materials to keep you protected, and they look darn good in the process.

If you’re not as concerned about the germs as you are about protecting your investment, iSkin has the great-looking iSkin Vu for iPad and iSkin Solo for the iPhone4. And for four TUAW readers, you’re going to win one of these cool cases in a random giveaway. Here are the official rules:

  • Open to legal US residents of the 50 United States, the District of Columbia, and Canada (excluding Quebec) who are 18 and older.
  • To enter, leave a comment telling us what kind of case — iPhone 4 or iPad — you’d like to win.
  • The comment must be left before midnight on Monday, November 1, 2010, 11:59PM Eastern Daylight Time.
  • You may enter only once.
  • Four winners will be selected in a random drawing. One will receive an iSkin Duo Case for iPad (Value: US$49.99), one will receive an iSkin Vu Case for iPad (Value: $64.99), one will receive an iSkin revo4 Case for iPhone 4 (Value: $39.99), and one will receive an iSkin Solo Case for iPhone 4 (Value: $29.99)

iPhone apps on sale for Halloween

Happy Halloween weekend! This is my favorite holiday of the year, not only because it’s a fun time for parties during my favorite season, but also because it seems to be an excellent time for developers to put a little something special into their apps — like put them on sale. There are quite a few sales hitting the App Store this weekend — Sega has some of their titles on sale again (including Ecco the Dolphin and the great Shining Force), and Namco Bandai is doing the same. You can pick up Bit.Trip Beat and the original Pac Man game for just a buck each, among a few other good deals.

PopCap has brought Plants vs. Zombies down to a buck for the holiday, and EA has a “Monster Sale” going on, too, with Wolfenstein RPG, Snood, and more on sale for just one cent less than a buck.

All treats, no tricks on this Halloween weekend. There will probably be a few more sales announced before the weekend ends — we’ll try to keep an eye out for them, and let you know when we see them. Want even more quick app sale announcements? Watch our Twitter feed — we’ll often post quick free app and sale app notices there.

iphoto 11 updateApple has released iPhoto 9.0.1 via Software Update. The update addresses issues that, in extremely rare cases, could result in data loss when upgrading a library from an earlier version of iPhoto. Indeed, many of our readers have complained of such issues and our own Mel Martin wrote about them in his review of iPhoto ’11.

The update weighs in at 33.87 MB and requires iLife ’11 and Mac OS X 10.6.3 or later. You can also download the update here and read Apple’s knowledgebase article here.

3G now available on Mount Everest

Happen to be climbing Mount Everest in the near future? Take heart — you can probably use your iPhone there now. Provider Teliasonera has reportedly installed a 3G antenna at the base camp of Everest, connecting the remote location to a modern cell phone network for the first time. Previously, climbers had to use satellite phones to stay in touch with the rest of the world, and according to Reuters, the summit is still off limits — the highest video call was made from an elevation of about 17,388 feet, which is where most climbers begin their journey to the summit at 29,035 feet.

Unfortunately, your iPhone will still have to be roaming — while TeliaSonera has been running iPhone-specific services in Europe and elsewhere in the world, the iPhone hasn’t officially launched in Nepal yet. Even though it’ll probably cost a ton in charges, you can now call in from Mount Everest’s base camp. Now about the actual climb…

Review: iPhoto ’11 is a very mixed bag

When iLife ’11 was announced, I was quite excited to hear there was an update to iPhoto, and even more surprised to learn my local Apple Store had the software in stock the day after the “Back to the Mac” event.

The feature list for the latest version of iPhoto is impressive, and since I do so much photography it seemed a no-brainer to get it. New features include:

  • Full screen mode
  • A direct link to Facebook for posting comments and pictures
  • New slideshow templates
  • New book designs
  • Enhanced templates for emailing photos
  • Letterpress Cards for sending to family and friends

For US$49, with GarageBand ’11 and iMovie ’11 in the mix in addition to iPhoto, I was ready to buy iLife. Let’s go over the changes, then deal with some of the ugly truths.

Microsoft also declares record revenue, but Apple still on top

Apple isn’t the only technology company that’s posting record revenue this year — Microsoft has brought in $16.20 billion in the last quarter, which stands as a record with a 25 percent increase from the same time last year. The Seattle giant also increased net income to $5.41 billion, so it looks like Halo Reach (in September) and Office 2010 (in July) sent things in a good direction.

Apple announced revenue of $20 billion last quarter, which puts the Cupertino company on top by $4 billion in terms of incoming money. But Microsoft still rules net income, with Apple pulling in $4.31 billion for the same quarter. That may change next reporting period, given Apple’s steam in the industry so far, but no matter which way you slice it, both of these companies are rolling in the dough.

Ratings missing from the App Store?

A few readers have notified us that app ratings have disappeared entirely from the App Store in iTunes. The ratings still appear on the iOS App Stores and in browser previews of apps, but for the desktop iTunes view of the App Store, they are nowhere to be found.

iTunes Connect was apparently down for a little while last night, but it’s been down before and ratings have never vanished from the iTunes App Store. More likely than not, the ratings and reviews will reappear in the iTunes App Store soon; it’s just odd that Apple hasn’t sent a note out to developers about this.

China’s new online Apple Store sells out of iPhone 4s on day one

Just 24 hours into business, China’s first online Apple Store has sold its entire stock of iPhone 4s. Writing for The Global Times, Wang Xinyuan says, “Apple Inc’s new online Chinese-language store was a big hit with consumers Wednesday after it sold out its entire stock of iPhone 4s on the first day.”

Apple hopes to tap into China’s fast-growing online shopping market, which saw business of 120 billion yuan (about US$17.91 billion as of this writing) worth of transactions in the third quarter of this year.

More importantly, Apple hopes the online store will further thwart the gray market that has been a consistent problem in China. Supply shortages and the prestige of owning the device have created a large network of unauthorized resellers. Recently, Apple Store security was required to temporarily close a Beijing Apple Store and adopt a one-per-customer policy when customers began to purchase iPhones in bulk and re-sell them right outside of the store.

As for the online store, The Global Times reports that its stock will not be immediately replenished, and is encouraging customers to check back often for updates.
