Hollaback: an iPhone app to combat harassment

hollaback appThis week the anti-harassment website ihollaback.org has released an iPhone app that they hope will help encourage women to stand up and report cases of harassment in public places.

The Hollaback iPhone app does pretty much what you’d expect it to do. If you’re being harassed or are witnessing someone being harassed, you can whip out your iPhone running Hollaback, take a photo of the violator and upload it to the Hollaback servers along with location data. A follow-up email comes back to you later, where you’re asked to detail what happened. Once that’s done, the scumbag’s photo and your story are posted for all to see on the company’s website. Though the US$0.99 app is now available in the App Store, I wasn’t able to test it out because, well, I doubt I’d find volunteers to try it out on.

Allowing these incidents to be reported so quickly and easily could be a great way to help authorities nail down problem-ridden locations, but I have to wonder if whipping out a cell phone rather than running away or calling for help is the answer. Maybe you’re better off pretending to make a call. Also, why is there a price tag on this app, when it was reportedly paid for already with donations?

Amazon deal could affect Apple’s publishing efforts

Amazon has just backed down a bit on its newspaper publishing program for the Kindle service, and it’s possible that it happened as a result of pressure from Apple itself. Amazon has announced a new plan for newspapers and their content that would give them a full 70% royalty split, a deal very similar to the ones Apple is making with all kinds of content developers lately. Originally, Amazon had contracted various newspapers around the world to provide content to its Kindle service under a much more restrictive plan, but as we’ve reported here before, Apple is now trying to do the same thing for iPad, and that is likely giving newspaper content creators some leverage against Amazon’s original agreement.

Under the terms of the new agreement, it may even be possible for newspapers to submit their content to both Amazon and Apple, and that was previously not possible before. That means that next January (when Apple is expected to introduce a second version of the iPad), we may finally see an Apple-run way to get newspapers and even blogs on the device, perhaps through iBooks or another brand new app.

This is all speculative, at this point — right now, all we know is that Amazon has moved towards a more Apple-like deal in terms of sharing newspaper content. But it certainly seems like a deal to bring more newspapers to the iPad is coming soon.

Apple changes policy on liquid damage to iPods

According to a memo acquired by The Boy Genius Report (BGR), Apple has altered its policy on treating iPods with water damage. Under the new guidelines, service personnel will be required to do two things. First, confirm that the device’s internal Liquid Contact Indicators (LCIs) had been activated. Second, the tech must positively identify secondary evidence of water damage. Previously, they were only required to confirm the LCI activation. BGR wonders if Apple has begun to mistrust the LCIs, and therefore ordered the search for secondary confirmation.

Last year, a number of users complained of damage suffered while using the iPhone during a workout. Yes, the iPhone plays music and has that spiffy Nike + app, but if you’re going to hit the gym, we suggest picking up a US$49 dollar — and significantly more liquid-resistant — iPod shuffle.

WOWKeys integrates keyboard and iPhone dock

A keyboard called WOWKeys is trying to make good use of your little touchscreen-based iPhone when it’s just sitting there charging itself up. The keyboard includes an actual iPhone dock, and with a switch on the device, you can go from controlling your computer wirelessly to using the keyboard on the phone. The US$100 USB keyboard even has a set of hotkeys that allows you to control things like song changing, volume, and even go to your iPhone’s home screen straight from the keyboard itself.

And depending on the apps you have loaded, you can of course use the iPhone to control any number of other devices, as it obviously works as usual while plugged in. My iPhone does sit next to me all day (and I will sometimes pull it up while a program is loading on my Mac to play a quick game or check Twitter), but a dock like this might help me include it in my workflow a little more officially. $100 is perhaps a bit steep, but it’s an interesting device.

ARDefender augmented reality shoot-em-up hands-on

ARDefender has been out for a couple of months but surprisingly it’s fallen under the radar of a lot of iPhone users. Combining augmented reality technology with a basic aim-and-shoot, ARDefender allows you to transform your physical desktop or office floor into a battleground. It costs just a buck and it’s a great way to both have fun and to showcase the iPhone’s [1] ability to integrate with the world around it.

To use the game, print out a special PDF template on any printer, trim to size, and place it on any flat surface. As you aim your device’s camera at the the template, tanks and planes start zooming around your virtual world. The template becomes a 3-D tower, so you don’t actually see it on the device screen.

Aim your tower’s cannons by tapping on the screen and shoot with a button in the lower-right corner of the screen. Other weapon controls and information are located at the periphery.

I have terrible coordination and have not managed to get past the third level, but most people will be able to shoot their way much higher. The fun is, of course, seeing these attackers interact with your real world environment and blasting them away before they manage to reach, for example, your coffee mug.

There’s not a whole lot more to ARDefender, but it’s fun and well worth the one dollar investment. It’s not a terribly deep game but it’s a fun one.

[1] Versions exist for the iPhone 4 (also the iPod touch 4th gen) and the Samsung Bada. Symbian S60 and Nintendo DSi iterations are forthcoming.

iPad launched in Russia today with very limited stock

Apple has officially launched the iPad in Russia today (or yesterday, if you happen to be in Russia at the moment). All six models are available from three retail chains including M.Video, Bely Veter and re:Store.

There’s quite a few strings attached to this launch, however. According to Tatar-inform, the iPad will only be on sale in five cities including Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Volgograd, Rostov-on-Don, and Kazan. Perhaps even worse for Russian Apple aficionados who hope to get their hands on an iPad is that there are only 3,000 to 4,000 iPads available in the country on launch, but Apple does plan to ship forty to fifty thousand units to Russia by the year’s end.

Prices range from 19,990 rubles (US$650) for the 16GB WiFi model to 32,990 rubles (US$1,075) for the 64GB WiFi+3G model. Those prices might seem high, but Tatar-inform says that when the iPad launched in the US in March, they almost immediately penetrated the Russian gray market and fetched prices as high as 100,000 rubles, or US$3,256, apiece.

Thanks, Vlad!

Zaggmate iPad keyboard case joins the fray

zaggmate ipad keyboard case
Have an iPad but still feel the need to have a case and/or keyboard to go with it? While we have certainly seen similar iPad cases with keyboards and even some cases made out of wood, you may want to check out the newest addition to the “iPad case with keyboard” category from Zagg. While there are two different versions of this new Zaggmate case, one with a built-in QWERTY keyboard and one without, I imagine the one with the keyboard will be the bigger seller of the two, especially for those looking to make their iPad their travel computer.

Made from anodized aluminum and packed with military grade high-density padding, the keyboard connects with your iPad via Bluetooth, enabling horizontal or vertical use. Priced at US$99.99 with the keyboard and $69.99 without, Zagg says the cases are “Coming Soon” but you can sign up to get an email notification when they are available for sale. Check out videos of both models below.

MobileMe finds a missing iPad but it’s not a happy ending

Find My iPhone/iPad is one terrific benefit of MobileMe. In fact, to me, it is the best part of the service. For an Indiana man, the ability to find a missing iPad worked as it should, but too late to do much good.

Here’s the depressing story. One of our readers was moving stuff into his car with his Dad. With hands full, Dad put the iPad on the hood of the car. Then the pair drove off, leaving the iPad in the street. When our reader discovered the missing iPad he went straight to MobileMe, and the service dutifully located the iPad a few blocks away.

The police assumed the iPad was stolen, and as they searched the apartment building where the location was, the police asked the owner to send a sound to the iPad so it could be found. They did locate the iPad, and the guy who had it said he found it in the street and was going to try to find the owner the next day.

The iPad had been run over while it was in the street, and the case didn’t look too spiffy, but amazingly the iPad still worked well enough to contact MobileMe servers, but the screen was cracked and not displaying anything.

Lessons #1: don’t leave your iPad on the top of a car. It’s unlikely to stay there. Lesson #2: Find My iPhone really does work. Lesson #3: the iPad can “take a licking and keep on ticking,” as the watch commercials used to say.

Check the gallery for Find My Phone in action and the grim results.

Thanks to Jack K. for sending us his tale of woe

iSWiFTER is another Flash-to-iOS app featuring video and games

Currently free for a limited time, iSWiFTER is yet another contender in a growing category of what I’d call “service” apps which allow you to play Flash content on your iOS device. While Skyfire was iPhone compatible, iSWiFTER is iPad-only. How does it work? Just barely.

This is not designed for accessing the rich universe of creamy Flash content. This is a list of 15 games or videos from around the web. Game interaction is primarily poke-based, as there’s no multi-touch or swipe behavior support. Not really, anyway, as the lag from the transcoding service makes for poor response time. Games are “mostly playable” depending on this lag. They are presented in a smaller window inside a border, likely to spare bandwidth. Still, audio can get choppy. If you absolutely must play the less than dozen games available and all you have is your iPad, then here’s your app.

Video was an even less useful experience. The app includes TED content, but there’s already an app for that. One video (a YouTube clip, no less) refused to play, and another site required scrolling. Well, if you ever remote-controlled a computer on a slow connection you may guess what happens when you “scroll” via remote — the page flies and you’re nowhere you wanted to be. Finessing the scrollbar before even getting to the video is no way to use your iPad, son. I also got a big screen of static at one point.

For free I’d say iSWiFTER may provide you with a few grins from poking around some very simplistic games. But it’s more of the same from these apps, a clunky tech demo that ultimately reminds us there’s no Flash on iOS, for better or worse.

iOS 4.2 to launch Friday?

MacStories.net is reporting that one of their sources working close with AT&T revealed that Apple will release iOS 4.2 on Friday at 10AM PST for the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. MacStories is also reporting that tomorrow will see the release of iTunes 10.1 and Mac OS X 10.6.5 via Software Update. Both iTunes 10.1 and Mac OS X 10.6.5 are presumed to be required for the iOS 4.2 update for its AirPlay and AirPrint functionality.

Last week the Gold Master of iOS 4.2 was released to developers and just last night a new version of Mac OS X 10.6.5 was seeded to devs. Apple had previously stated that iOS 4.2 would be released sometime this month.

iOS 4.2 coming this week to an iPhone near you

Rumor has it that Apple will release iTunes 10.1 and Max OS X 10.6.5 today with iOS 4.2 coming out this coming Friday at 10:00 AM. iPad owners eagerly await this release because they will finally get iOS 4 along with several nice features.

The new functionality in iOS 4.2 includes AirPrint, which allows users to print wirelessly and AirPlay which lets you stream music and video. iTunes 10.1 is required to install iOS 4.2 on the iPad and you will need Mac OS X 10.6.5 to share a printer with your iOS device. Windows users won’t be left out as they will be able to share a printer through iTunes 10.1. Other highly anticipated features for iPad owners are multitasking and folders.

These rumors are brought to you by MacStories citing an inside source at AT&T.

Introduction to Android development

Welcome to the first Android development articles on Mobile Orchard. We are going to start a series of articles to introduce you to the world of Android development. We are going to start off with the Android platform and the necessary tools to start Android development.

Android Software Stack:

This picture describes the Android software stack that can be described as a Linux Kernel and C/C++ libraries exposed through an application framework that provides services for and management of runtime and applications.

Android Software Stack

The elements of the Android software stack are:

  1. Linux Kernel: provides abstraction between the hardware and the rest of the stack, responsible for device drivers (Camera , Wi Fi, etc…), resources management , power management, security and net working
  2. C/C++ Libraries: such as SQL lite, Graphics libraries OpenGL ES, media framework and webkit layout engine.
  3. The Android Runtime: includes Core libraries and the Dalvik Vitual Machine.
    The Core libraries provide most of java libraries + additional Android libraries.
    The Dalvik VM provides (Just In Time) JIT compilation. the VM is optimized to run multiple instances of VMs. As Java applications access the core libraries each application has its own VM
  4. The Android Application Framework: Provides classes required to develop an Android application and abstraction between hardware access. the Android Java API’s main library include telephony, content providers (data), resources, locations and UI.
  5. Application Layer: all Android applications(native or third party) are built on the application layer using the same API.

So Android applications are written in Java, but remember it is not Java ME (Mobile Edition). It’s just Most of J2SE libraries + Android’s own Java libraries.

The Android Application structure:

Android architecture encourages component reuse allowing you to publish and share activities, services and data between applications with security restrictions defined by you. This enables developers to include out of the box components such as the phone dialer or contact manager to their applications, or add new functionalities to them.

The bases of the Android applications are:

  • Activity Manager: which controls the life cycle of the activities, activities can be compared to the windows or web forms they carry the controls (views) that construct the interface, an activity represents a single screen.
  • Views: the UI components that construct the interface. They can be compared to the swing or windows forms controls
  • Notification Manger: provides a consistent mechanism to notify or alert users.
  • Content Providers: lets applications to share data between them.
  • Resources Manager: much like the ASP.NET resources concept. Enables the developer to store resources such as strings or images.

Android Versions:

Android has been updated many times since its release, these updates were to fix bugs and add new functionalities. Each Android update has a name of a dessert.

  • Android 1.5 (Cup Cake).
  • Android 1.6 (Donut).
  • Android 2.0/2.1 (Eclair).
  • Android 2.2 (Froyo).
  • Android 2.3 (Gingerbread).

Getting started with Android development tools:

Android applications can be developed on Windows, Mac or Linux platforms.

To start developing Android apps you need:

  1. Download and install the Java Development Kit (JDK).
  2. The Android SDK
  3. Eclipse IDE .
  4. Follow the installation links from this link.

After you’re done you will be ready to start developing Android Applications.

Our First Android Application:

Now we’re going to explore our first Android application which will be the famous Hello World application. We are going to explain the structure of an Android application and some of the basic concepts we must understand.

  1. Open Eclipse and select from the menu File>New> Project, you’ll see a window like this from the Android node select Android project and press Next.
  2. Now there are several fields that appear here they are:
    Project Name: The Eclipse project name, the name of the folder that will hold the project files.
    Application Name:The name of the application that will appear on the phone.
    Package Name: The application package name, a good convention to use to avoid applications package name conflict is com.mydomain.myapp.
    Create Activity: the name of the basic activity class of your application. it’s optional to create.
    Min SDK Version: the minimum API level required by the application. You see in the Build Target list there is a list of the available SDK versions to use for the application and in front of each one the corresponding API level. You must ensure that you application API level is supported by the device select it to be 8 (for Android 2.2).
  3. Press next; we won’t create a test project for our application yet.
  4. Press Finish then navigate to the project  press run and choose run as Android Application, the emulator will start, wait until the main screen appears.

The Android Emulator may take some time, so please be patient. After the emulator launches, unlock it and your application will launch automatically. it should be like this:

Android Project Structure:

The project contains the following folders:

  • Src: Contains all the source code (class files) for the project.
  • Gen: Contains the R.java class file. The R.java is an automatically generated class file that holds a reference to each resource in the application
  • Android 2.2: Its name changes according to the sdk version you use (2.2 here). Contains the Android API class files packed in android.jar files
  • Assets: You can place any external resources (text files, images,…) in this folder. It’s much like the res file except it’s more like the file system where you put files that you want to access them as raw bytes
  • Drawable folders: Contains the images required for you application. You can add your own image files to this folder. Notice that there are three folders with hdpi,ldpi and mdpi suffixes. These folders are used to include image resources with different resolutions suitable to the different phone screens. And at runtime Android will pick the suitable image from the suitable folder.
  • Layout: Contains the main.xml file that defines the view that construct the User Interface of the application
  • Values: Contains other resources that can be used for your application such as string resources, styles or colors

Now we’re going to take a deeper look on the Hello Android application and know what each line of code exactly means
The MainActivity.java file contains the following code:

package mina.android.hellowolrd;

import android.app.Activity;

import android.os.Bundle;

public class MainActivity extends Activity {

/** Called when the activity is first created. */

@Override

public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {

super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);

setContentView(R.layout.main);

}

}
  1. The first line is the package name of the application.
  2. Lines 3,4 are import statements of two libraries(): android.app.Activity and android.os.Bundle
  3. Line 6 is the declaration of the MainActivity class which extends from Activity , Activity represents the User interface view or window of your application much like windows or web forms.
  4. Our class contains one function which is onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState). This function is called when the activity is first created, it should contain all the initialization and UI setup.
    This function has a parameter savedInstanceState of type Bundle
    this object holds the activity’s previously saved state if exists (similar to asp.net view state concept)
  5. Line 10 calls the super class’ OnCreateMethod with the activity’s
  6. Line 11 calls setContentView(R.layout.main); method which dsiplays the layout definition in main.xml file in res/layout directory by accessing a reference to it from the R class
    This method is required to display the user interface, if the activity does not include this function then it would display a blank screen.

If we went to main.xml in the layout folder we will find it like this:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
    android:orientation="vertical"
    android:layout_width="fill_parent"
    android:layout_height="fill_parent"
    >
<TextView
    android:layout_width="fill_parent"
    android:layout_height="wrap_content"
    android:text="@string/hello"
    />
</LinearLayout>

This xml layout file defines a vertical LinearLayout Container with a TextView inside it.

The TextView has a text property android:text=”@string/hello”. This means that there is a string resource called hello is defined in the values/strings.xml with the value “Hello World, MainActivity!”.

What if we want to reference this TextView from our class, we will add an id property to the TextView to be like this:

<TextView
    android:layout_width="fill_parent"
    android:layout_height="wrap_content"
    android:text="@string/hello"
    android:id="@+id/txtHello"
    />

The id of any view in Android must be in this format “@+id/(id of the view)”

After we added the id property to the view, we reference it from the code like this:

@Override
    public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
        super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
        setContentView(R.layout.main);

        TextView txt=(TextView)findViewById(R.id.txtHello);
        txt.setText("referenced from code");
    }

Run the application it should be like this:

Notice that we reference our TextView with the method findViewById(int Id).

The id of the TextView (txtHello) is strongly typed as it was added automatically to the R.java file and assigned an integer value:

public final class R {
    public static final class attr {
    }
    public static final class drawable {
        public static final int icon=0x7f020000;
    }
    public static final class id {
        public static final int txtHello=0x7f050000;
    }
    public static final class layout {
        public static final int main=0x7f030000;
    }
    public static final class string {
        public static final int app_name=0x7f040001;
        public static final int hello=0x7f040000;
    }
}

Note:

You do not to add views (controls) to your activity in the xml directly. You can switch to the layout view by pressing the layout tab in the main.xml file and choose the views from the toolbox.

There is also a nice UI generator tool called Droid Draw.

Summary:
The basic Android application with only one view consists of a class that extends the Activity class. This class preserves the activity frozen state (like viewstate in asp.net) and it displays the UI defined in xml file layout file or defined explicitly programmatically.

We hope you found this tutorial informative and look forward to bringing you our new series on Android app development.

With enough users to populate a small planet, Facebook has become the quintessential Internet experience. We’re all hopelessly addicted to it whether or not we agree with some of its business practices.

Since I’m a big fan of the iPhone Facebook iPhone app, I naturally went straight to the App Store when I bought my iPad in search of the iPad version and was quite disappointed to see that one doesn’t exist. In lieu of an official app, today we’ll look at your three primary options for getting Facebook free on your iPad.

Why Free?

I’ll start by saying that there are a few non-free apps available that let you use Facebook. However, since Facebook is a free service that works fairly well, as we’ll see below, in the plain old iPad browser, I just can’t see why I should dish out a single cent to use it.

Call me cheap but unless someone develops a revolutionary Facebook experience in a paid app, I’m sticking with free!

Option #1: iPad Safari

The first option is the most obvious. It’s important to remember that the iPad is not the iPhone. It doesn’t have a tiny screen that makes using full-size sites difficult and time consuming. In fact, the screen is only a little smaller than the MacBook screen that I’m currently staring at.

Using Safari, you get nearly the full Facebook experience, excluding of course games and other Flash-driven content. You can update your status, comment, like, and poke to your heart’s content. The site design is minimal enough that it’s actually quite easy and even enjoyable to use.

If you want something a little touch-friendlier, navigate to touch.facebook.com for an even simpler interface.

iPad Safari Verdict

I really don’t mind using the full Facebook in Safari for most of the time. However, I do think that the touch version is too simplified and doesn’t really feel like it’s taking advantage of the iPad as a device.

There are some major downsides to the full version though. Uploading pictures form your iPad isn’t easy. As far as I can tell, the typical upload system doesn’t work at all so you’re forced to work with an email workaround. Further, video content isn’t the best. In my tests, videos shared by my friends continually launched the YouTube app and closed Safari. This is quite annoying and usually makes me avoid watching videos altogether. Finally, Facebook chat is disabled in mobile Safari.

So the verdict here is, skip the touch version, use the full version. It’s just a much richer experience and has the general feeling of Facebook how it’s meant to be.

The Facebook iPhone App

Let’s not forget that the iPad runs iPhone apps just fine. You can either use the Facebook iPhone app in its actual size or choose to blow it up and suffer through the ugly pixelation that occurs as a side effect.

The functionality here is excellent. Everything that you love on the iPhone app works perfectly and it’s designed specifically for an iOS touch experience.

Facebook for iPhone Verdict

As I mentioned above, I really like this app on the iPhone. Facebook has done more than simply port the site to a small screen, they really took the time to make it a unique experience.

However, the iPad isn’t a small screen. If you use it small, it feels like a phenomenal waste of screen real estate. If you use it large, things get ugly. Further, even large it’s really not making good use of the screen. The layout just feels like a blown up small app rather than something that was designed for a large screen.

With the Facebook app you’re also stuck in a vertical orientation for certain parts of the app (some screens work in horizontal mode). Since I really like using my iPad horizontally, this bugs me a lot.

Overall, despite liking the iPhone app on the iPhone, I think the Safari experience is much better on the iPad. Adding photos and a few other functions are a lot easier on the iPhone app, but a quick stop by the service feels much better on the full version of the site.

Friendly for Facebook Lite

Up until recently, Friendly was a paid-only app. However, they just released a free lite version that is surprisingly fully featured. In fact, I’m not sure what the differences are between the two aside from an ad placed at the bottom of the lite version (which is easily closable).

Friendly looks a little like a more developed version of Facebook’s Touch site and is quite close in functionality to Facebook’s official iPhone app. You can chat, upload images, edit your profile, watch videos without being rerouted to another app, check in with places, view your notifications and a lot more.

Friendly not only matches the functionality of the official Facebook iPhone app, it surpasses it with something I haven’t seen in any other Facebook option: multiple account support.

Choosing Your Account

When you start up Friendly, you are given the option to login using one of four accounts that you previously setup. This is great if you share an iPad with a spouse like I do.

Friendly for Facebook Verdict

Friendly is awesome. As far as I’m concerned it’s just as good or better than an official Facebook iPad app would be. I’ve only just started using it but it has quickly become my standard option for Facebook on the iPad.

It’s important to note though that the Safari version does have a couple of advantages of Friendly. For instance, it’s nice to be able to filter your feed by photos, links etc. However, in my opinion, the clear benefits of Friendly easily make up for these small missing features.

Before you decide that the full Facebook site in Safari is the way to go, download Friendly for Facebook Lite. It’s Facebook on your iPad, it’s free, and it’s amazing.
