Manage Your Posterous Blog On Your iPhone

Do you want a simple way to share the things that happen on the go without taking tons of time to format a nice blog post? Posterous describes itself as the simplest way to blog and share anything you want, so let’s see if their new iPhone app brings the same tradition of simplicity for mobile blogging.

Posterous is one of the most unique simple blogging services. To start a blog, just send an email to [email protected], and seconds later, you’ll have a new Posterous blog with that email as your first post. This means that every iPhone and iPod Touch have a built in Posterous blogging app: the Mail app. You could also blog from a more advanced email app such as MarkdownMail. Still, when you want to post pictures or manage your blog itself, you’ll want more power. That’s where the new Posterous app comes in.

Create a New Blog With a Post

The Posterous app doesn’t take away any of Posterous’ simplicity. Right from the launch screen, you can simply press Post to create a new blog post without even creating a Posterous account. In fact, even if you already have a Posterous blog, you don’t need to login first; just tap “Press” to quickly create a post and you can add the new post to your existing blog later. Enter the title and post content you want, then tap the i or plus button to add extra content to your post.

screenshot

Create a new blog by just creating a new post

The i button lets you add tags and choose whether or not to geotag your post with location data from your GPS if you’re posting from an iPhone. Then, from the plus button, you can add existing images or videos or capture new ones to add to the post. Once you’ve added content, you’ll see a new attachments button that shows how many items you’ve added to your post. Feel free to add more pictures and videos if you want; each post can contain up to 100Mb of media. You can then view and organize the content from the paper clip button.

screenshot

Adding tags and extra content is simple from the app

Now you’ve got a blog post with pictures, tags, and more ready to publish, so just press the “Send” button on the top of the article draft to upload it. Moments later, you’ll see your new blog’s info with the new post listed. Tap View Site to see the new post, or press share to email your new blog’s address to friends.

screenshot

Publish and create a new blog without any extra steps

You can share the blog directly and keep making new posts like you just did without ever creating an account. But, if you want more control over your site and want to make it look and work just like you want, you’ll want to sign in with your Posterous account or create a new account. To do this, press “Save your site.” Then enter your info and choose a site address to create a new account, or press “login” if you have an existing Posterous blog.

Seconds later, you’ll see your Posterous site listed in the Sites menu. If you signed in with an existing blog, you’ll see the name of your existing blog, and if you had multiple blogs already, you’ll see all of them listed.

screenshot

Sign in with your account, and your new post will be added to your old site.

Tap your site’s name to see all of your posts, including the post you just uploaded. You’ll see the number of times a post has been viewed beside the people icon, and also the number of comments on a post beside that. You can view, delete, or share a post if you tap on it; unfortunately, though, you cannot edit existing posts.

screenshot

Keep up with all of your posts on the go.

Once you’ve signed in with an account, you can change some of your account settings from the Settings button. Among other options, you can view your uploads and tweak your photo and video upload quality settings. Posterous can automatically post all of your blog’s content to all of your favorite social networks and other blog services, but unfortunately you’ll have to configure this via Posterous’ online interface.

Pros and Cons

The Posterous app definitely makes blogging on the go very simple. I was impressed at how easy it is to make a new blog without even creating an account, and then at how well Posterous merged our content with my existing Posterous blog once I signed in with an account. Of course, you can always post to Posterous from email, but this app does make it simpler to get pictures and videos online.

I wish the app offered more formatting options, though; for now, the MarkdownMail app is about the best way to create formatted posts on the go. Another feature most blogging apps don’t have is the ability to save a draft post to your blog; this is a feature I personally would love to see, so hopefully Posterous and other blogging apps will eventually add this.

Additionally, I was disappointed that you can’t manage your Posterous account more from the app. Right now, you have to login to the desktop web interface to add sharing options and change your blog’s theme. We hope the Posterous app gets more features over time, but for now it does do one thing good: it’s the simplest mobile blogging app I’ve used yet.

Conclusion

If you’re looking for a direct way to get content on your blog quickly and easily, the Posterous app is about as simple as it can get. It only takes seconds to post a unique blog post and share you latest adventures with the world.

Posterous is an increasingly nice blog service, so once you’re posting from your iPhone you can always tweak your Posterous blog online with themes, fonts, and more. You can also add numerous social services directly to Posterous to share your content online. Feel free to check out more info at our review of the Posterous web service. Once you’ve set these up online, your iPhone will be a mobile publishing powerhouse!

iPhone Game Friday: New Releases

Those of you in the northern hemisphere will no doubt have noticed that the chilly season seems to be upon us. As I write this, the first snow of the season is drifting down outside, so…welcome to winter, everyone!

This week, we’ve got another sweet lineup of games for you, so grab some hot chocolate and snuggle up with one of these…

They Need To Be Fed

They Need To Be Fed

They Need To Be Fed

It may not be entirely in the spirit of the season, but there’s nothing wrong with a little kamikaze cuisine now and again. YoYo Games’ new platformer, They Need To Be Fed, introduces us to some ugly looking monsters at the beginning, indicating that it’s our responsibility to alleviate their hunger. Apparently we take our responsibility very seriously, because…we’re the food.

The darkly humorous premise is supported by eye-popping high-contrast vector artwork and smooth animations, but what really sets this little platformer apart is its ingenious gameplay mechanic. The game features a sort of omni-directional gravity system so that you’re never really concerned about “falling” off of a platform. You can launch yourself off in any direction with the simple jump and directional buttons, and once airborne you’ll be drawn to the closest object. The gravity is very finely tuned, which makes for a great sense of freedom without being too simple; as you progress through the levels, you’ll need to jump just right to avoid spikes and other obstacles while seeking out diamonds to collect.

At the end of each level, your reward is the bittersweet opportunity to jump into the waiting maw of the little black beasties. It’s not exactly catharsis, but the game is satisfying and addictive.

Wispin

Wispin

Wispin

If you liked the colourful look of our previous title then Wispin will also be to your liking. Wispin is a colour-matching game wrapped in an arcade framework with pretty visuals and two different gameplay modes — each of which offer endless levels of increasing challenge.

Each level pits you against encroaching waves of coloured baddies called “Bloopers”. Controlling Wispin (either with an onscreen joystick or tilt controls), you use your right thumb to change Wispin’s colour to match that of the Blooper you want to attack. It’s a pretty fresh and enjoyable system that’s easy to pick up, but a clever combo mechanic and plenty of funny weapons, powerups, and bonuses will keep you coming back to perfect your skills.

The game sympathetically offers support for left-handed players and the colourblind, which if nothing else shows that the folks at GrumpyFace Studios have a lot more heart than their name might lead you to believe. Wispin’s definitely worth a look, so grab it now while it’s hot (and on sale)!

Magic Life

Magic Life

Magic Life

Magic Life is another game in the burgeoning simulation genre and is very much in the vein of We Rule, except that instead of overlording above a city or town or farm, you are in control of a magical apprentice on an island.

After creating your character, you begin completing quests and customizing your home. The art style is an attractive cel-shaded look reminiscent of recent mobile Zelda titles, and you will find that there is plenty to keep you busy on the island. The quests are fairly standard fantasy RPG fare — collect this, combine those, zap the other, etc. — but the added personalization and commerce systems make Magic Life feel vibrant and fun.

You can also invite friends and turn them into animals, visit their rooms, and more. Partway between a sim and an RPG, Magic Life strikes a fine balance and offers some rewarding gameplay — at a good price!

Elevator Zombies

Elevator Zombies

Elevator Zombies

Between the groovy music, linear gameplay, and solid artwork, Elevator Zombies has a lot to offer.

There are several game modes, but the basic premise remains the same: as Teddy, navigate through zombie-infested buildings and collect items to achieve your objectives and ultimately save your girlfriend Lily. There are a lot of fun weapons to collect and use against the zombies, and although there are no achievements (yet) to collect, you are always encouraged to struggle for a better score. The most significant element working against Elevator Zombies is the relatively small size of the virtual D-pad buttons — it can make for some frustrating mid-level slips.

Nevertheless, there’s more to like about this game than dislike. It’s legitimately fun and the smooth difficulty curve eases you in. Updates are sure to address the D-pad issue and add more levels, so you may as well grab it and push through the first set of levels for now!

Plasma Globe

Plasma Globe

Plasma Globe

Plasma Globe is one of those games that you get to impress your friends with your fancy touch-screen phone. It’s exactly what you expect it to be: an interactive plasma globe like the one you used to have in your basement, but what you might not expect is that it’s actually a game too.

Admittedly, there’s not much to the actual game aspect at this point, but it’s nevertheless a fun little time waster. Once you start, “enemy” circles begin approaching your globe from all sides, and you need to touch them when they’re in range to zap them with a plasma bolt until they’re destroyed. At the start, when there’s only one at a time, it’s a cinch, but when you start needing to use multiple fingers and the enemies get larger and more resilient, it actually gets to be quite challenging.

Either way, Plasma Globe is a beautiful-to-look at app that’s interesting to interact with. The fact that it even has the added benefit of a mini-game built in is icing on the cake. The free cake.

Weekly Poll: Mac or PC?

Since the iPhone is made by Apple, I have a tendency to think of our readers as Mac users and am interested to know if this is in fact the case. As always, this information will help us better target our articles to content that you’ll actually be interested in.

Just because you own an iPhone, that doesn’t mean you’re fully on board with Apple. I’ll wager that there are plenty of die hard Windows fans out there who love their iPhones but have zero intentions of ever buying a Mac.

Vote in the poll on the right to tell us if you’re a Mac or PC user, then leave a comment below and tell us about your setup. Are you running OS 10.6 on a Mac, Windows 7 on an HP or maybe even Linux on a Dell? We want to know!

Delibar: Beautiful Bookmark Management on Your iPhone

This article reviews the social bookmarking app Delibar for the iPhone and iPod Touch iOS devices. After explaining why social bookmarking on mobile devices is important, the article will explore the features and functions of the app before reviewing how it could improve by increasing the number of social bookmarking services that the app has access to.

Delibar is an iPhone and iPod Touch app that was created to connect iOS users with the social bookmarking services Delicious and Pinboard. With Delibar, you can view bookmarks that your friends have noted, access websites that you have added using your desktop and share what you have found with friends on Delicious, Pinboard, Twitter and Facebook.

Social Bookmarking on the iPhone and iPod Touch

Social Bookmarking improves on the flat, uninformative lists that form traditional browser bookmarks by allowing groups of friends to share the websites that they find interesting. Beyond social sharing, the most useful function of services such as Delicious and Pinboard is the ability to associate valuable information including descriptions and tags to website addresses. This makes long lists of bookmarks easy to manage and infinitely more valuable, especially on a mobile device such as the iPhone.

Web Browsers have become the ubiquitous window to the Internet that we enjoy. While numerous versions of browsers have been upgraded and released, one of their core features has been consistently ignored. Bookmarking has remained a flat, necessary function of FireFox, Internet Explorer and Safari, allowing services such as Delicious and Pinboard to succeed. These web based services and the browsers that empower them suffer from a disconnect both in user interface and functionality.

The disconnect between the browser and advanced social bookmarking services is the problem that the Delibar iPhone App and Delibar Mac Desktop Software solves. With Delibar, users have access to a thoughtful and refined user interface to control their own bookmarks and view the bookmarks of their friends.

Delibar Social Bookmarking App Features

Delibar has been created by Danilo Bonardi and Matteo Rattotti from iOS app development firm Shiny Frog. Similar to the Delibar Mac OSX desktop software app, the iOS version of Delibar is thoughtfully designed, exceptionally easy to use and features every function needed to browse, store and share bookmarks.

screenshot

The primary user interface of Delibar showing recent links and opening a link.

On the surface, the OSX version of Delibar and the Delibar iPhone App are functionally similar. However, when you think about the differences between how you use bookmarks on your desktop compared to how you use bookmarks on your iPhone or iPod Touch, the functionality of the Delibar iOS App stands alone.

screenshot

Reviewing bookmark details from Delicious and previewing the page.

Compatibility poses a small problem for iPod Touch users who do not have a 3rd generation Touch. While the iTunes store will remind 2nd generation Touch users that they must upgrade to iOS 4 before purchasing the app, the store does not check the hardware version. Delibar requires a 3rd generation iPod Touch. When it is purchased, installed and ran on a 2nd generation Touch, the app does not report an error message. It simply shows a black screen for a moment and then returns to the home screen.

Access Bookmarks Quickly

Accessing bookmarks is the primary function of Delibar on the iPhone or iPod Touch. The app does not immediately retrieve your entire list of bookmarks. Some users have thousands of bookmarks in their accounts with new ones added daily. Rather than weigh down both your mobile connection and the app itself, Delibar accesses your bookmarks only when requested. The app does however download all of the tags that you have used to enable their well-planned navigation.

Recently shared bookmarks are displayed in an easy to navigate list while the full archive is accessed by searching for tags. For example, if you remember that you bookmarked a great iOS app review and tagged it “iPhone App”, you could search for that tag for Delibar to return all of the websites that you have tagged with those terms.

screenshot

Searching for a bookmark and browsing pages in Delibar is accomplished with tags.

Full Delicious Functionality on your iPhone

The core functionality of Delicious has been implemented in Delibar. In order to use Delibar’s sharing functionality from within Safari, you must install the (free) Safari Mobile bookmarklet. Once installed, you can share bookmarks with Delicious, Pinboard, Twitter and Facebook.

screenshot

Core Delicious functionality including syncing accounts and viewing tags is easy with Delibar.

Thoughtful User Interface

Shiny Frog appears to have put a good amount of thought into the design of Delibar. Extending standard iOS elements, bookmarks are only one or two clicks away at any time. Users can assign a hotkey to open the App. From there, multi-account access and Delibar’s well conceived breadcrumb navigation make using the app easy.

screenshot

Delibar supports multiple Delicious and Pinboard accounts.

Summary

Shiny Frog clearly had the core functionality of social bookmarking service Delicious in mind when developing Delibar. By identifying the disconnect that exists between Safari Mobile and online social bookmarking services, Delibar connects iPhone and iPod Touch users with their Delicious and Pinboard accounts.

This iPod Touch and iPhone app does exactly what a social networking app should do. By connecting Safari Mobile with Delicious and Pinboard, users can organize, share and access a single set of common bookmarks. As web browsers begin to become a part of nearly every display we use, apps that collect data and make accessing it transparent are not only important, but essential. Surprisingly, FireFox, Internet Explorer, Safari and Chrome have ignored social bookmarking but with exceptional apps like Delibar supporting this functionality, they are likely comfortable relying on third party developers.

Rumor: iBooks update to bring Collections, PDF emailing and printing

Update: So much for rumors. Readers have let us know about two German websites pointing to explicit discussion of iBooks collections in the iOS 4.2 documentation, of all places. We can expect to see collection support in the next version of the iBooks app, which can be updated independently of the main OS releases.

Steve himself has hinted at improvements “coming” soon to iBooks, and 9to5Mac claims to have nabbed some internal Apple documents that lay out those improvements. The biggest feature is called “Collections,” and it sounds like it works the same as Folders in the rest of iOS — you can combine items in iBooks however you like, and the collections you’ve got in iBooks can be viewed right on your bookshelf in the main screen. Sounds handy, if not all that revolutionary.

Second, PDF users will get some nice additions — PDFs will be able to be shared via email as well as printed off with AirPrint directly from the iBooks app. That functionality won’t work for actual book files, obviously, given that if you want to read one of those, you’ll have to buy it. But if this document is legit, it should make things a little easier for people who want to share and print PDFs from iBooks itself.

We don’t know yet when these features will actually come to iBooks, but presumably we wouldn’t need to wait until an iOS update — Apple could update the iBooks app. We’ll keep an eye out for that soon.

TUAW’s Holiday Gift Guide: Standout iPad stands

Not a day had passed after the introduction of the iPad on April 3, 2010 that we began hearing about stands for the device. Let’s face it; an iPad is much lighter than even a MacBook Air, but your arm can get very tired holding one for any period of time. I’m not talking about docks here, just stands to hold your iPad in one place while you use it as an ebook, a movie player, a game device, or even a computer.

Rock and roll

One of the more unique iPad stands can be used to cradle an iPad in your lap or hold one on your chest while you’re in bed watching a movie. Are your kids watching playing games on your iPad in the back seat of the car? This is a great way for them to hold it in their laps. It’s the PropUp stand, which can be purchased for $24.99 from the PropUp store.

iOS 4.2 makes iPad a productivity rival for MacBook Air, says CNET

CNET’s Brook Crothers claims that with the launch of iOS 4.2, he is pretty much ready to abandon his MacBook Air in favor of full-time use of his iPad. Even before the upgrade to the mobile OS, Crothers found that he was almost exclusively using the 3G tablet in the airport, hotel and plane for his various tasks.

With the new functionality in 4.2 including multitasking, folders and printing he expects that trend to be amplified. The key to Crothers’ argument is what he calls the iPad’s “grab-and-go” capability. For content consumption and browsing as well as light editing/document creation, the iPad already wins easily; Crothers believes that future upgrades like twin cameras and perhaps even larger screens will only make the choice easier for him.

Unfortunately, Crothers does not mention whether he is comparing the iPad to an original MacBook Air or the new slimmer models that were recently introduced. For writers who don’t need to integrate images or multimedia content into their web work (like Crothers) the iPad is a spot-on solution. For those with longer writing tasks, photo research or video editing, a proper laptop may be a more productive approach. Hopefully we’ll continue to have both form factors for some time to come.

Lost in translation: Microsoft retail stores not matching Apple success?

In a pattern we’ve seen repeated numerous times over the years, copying the superficial look and feel of something often does not yield the same end result. Over the years, Microsoft has frequently taken inspiration from the work of Apple, including Windows, Zune and, of course, its new retail stores. The record of commercial success for Redmond has been decidedly mixed, with Windows obviously being huge and the Zune a dismal failure.

Despite hiring (and then losing to Tesla) George Blankenship, who helped craft Apple’s retail experience, and locating its stores adjacent to Apple stores, Microsoft just doesn’t seem to be gaining much traction. So far, Microsoft has opened seven stores but hasn’t said much publicly about their performance.

The LA Times did a bit of anecdotal analysis at the Shops at Mission Viejo mall, where the two stores sit near each other. Over the half hour period that the stores were observed, 19 customers walked out with purchases from Apple while only 3 did the same at the Microsoft store. This is far from a scientific analysis, but given the slow rate of expansion for Microsoft, it probably isn’t atypical.

Microsoft has said little publicly about its goals for the stores, other than building its brand. The problem is that most of the products that the stores sell don’t carry its brand, aside from a small Windows sticker or logo. Other than software and accessories, all of the main items available from an Apple store are from Apple.

The limited lineup of products made by Apple allows the stores to stock almost all of the variations available. Microsoft sells computers from HP, Samsung and others, and the limited space in a mall location means that it ends up with less selection and higher prices than a competing big box store like Best Buy. Without Apple’s hard to define “cool” factor and more focus, it’s not apparent whether Microsoft will be able to make a go of its stores, or if they will become the next Bob. What is it about Apple stores that makes you buy stuff there instead of Best Buy or Target?

Apple set to have a great holiday season, says Changewave

The holiday shopping season kicked off in America with Black Friday today, and Apple should finish out the rest of 2010 with a bang. ChangeWave, a firm that covers consumer trends, has told Apple 2.0/Fortune Tech that one of its surveys has consumers leaping for laptops, specifically those made by Apple.

10 percent of respondents told the firm they plan to buy a laptop in the next 90 days, and of those, 36 percent say they’re looking for a Mac. That’s an 11 point jump since the last time ChangeWave did this research, which one of its analysts says is “the highest level of planned laptop buying ever for Apple in a ChangeWave survey.” In short, Apple is likely to sell a lot of laptops this holiday season.

That’s not all — NPD is saying that according to its research, 11 percent of consumers (that’s all consumers) are planning to buy iPads from Apple by February of next year. That’s pretty nuts — the iPad’s sales chart has been heading upward for a long time, and the end of the year will apparently be no different. NPD also shared that iPad use time seems to increase the longer that consumers own the device, starting with 15 hours a week or so near purchase, up to 18 hours or more after a few months of ownership.

Sounds like Apple’s going to have a nice and profitable holiday season — not surprising, given its growth already in this and past years.

Kiwi 2 delivers groups and themes for Mac Twitter users

Kiwi 2Just in case you haven’t been happy with any of the seemingly countless Twitter clients for OS X, Kiwi 2 is here to offer you another one to try out. Full of new features like inline images, account grouping, gesture support for trackpads, and a themeable interface, Kiwi 2 is a pretty solid Twitter client that looks right at home on the Mac platform.

My favorite new feature I discovered when giving it a trial run? The ability to set rules to hide annoying tweets, which is something that should be built into any application designed to work with Twitter. I have been using Nambu on my Mac for months now, but it may have some competition in Kiwi 2 — at least until the next cool Twitter client comes out.

Kiwi 2 is available in 2 flavors: a free version supported by ads and an ad-free one which costs US $9.95. Click Read More to check out video of Kiwi 2 in action.

AirVideoEnabler ready for jailbroken iPhones/iPads, streams video to Apple TV

Apple’s much-awaited AirPlay service disappointed a lot of users when it shipped without API access for third-party apps — you can only send video from iOS devices out to the Apple TV from Apple-blessed apps like Video and YouTube. But that hasn’t stopped hackers from trying to figure out how to share more video across that AirPlay connection, and here they’ve gone and done it. Above, you can see a jailbreak app called AirVideoEnabler in action, that will push out video from any iOS app (including Safari) to the Apple TV. The app was supposed to be for sale in the Cydia store, but the creator, TUAW commenter Zone-MR, says he’s decided to make it free instead. You can add it from his repo, or look for it on your favorite repository soon.

Of course, the catch here is that you’ll need to be running a jailbroken iOS device, which means it can’t really be a mainstream patch in terms of fixing Apple’s AirPlay deficiencies. And if, like our own Victor Agreda, you wanted to stream this video to anything other than an Apple TV (like a MacBook or any other connected device), this solution won’t help you there, either.

But it’s a sharp demonstration of what the hacker community can do, even over Thanksgiving weekend. Maybe if it’s this simple for Zone-MR to pull off, Apple will see fit to bless the AirPlay APIs for use in App Store apps soon.

iPad 2 rumored to bring a Retina Display, more docks, and a camera

ipads

Now that iOS developers are rolling out plenty of iPad optimized versions of their apps, they may soon need to create yet more variants for the next generation iPad. Reports out of Taiwan are now saying that Apple will utilize a Retina Display, but if they do, resolution will have to increase from the current 1,024 x 768 and 132 pixels per inch to somewhere well north of 2,048 x 1,536.

Other changes that might arrive in iPad 2 include a USB port, a second dock connector to allow landscape use in the keyboard dock and dual (or at least front facing) cameras for FaceTime. Jonny Ive and the crew will probably find a way to make iPad 2 slimmer and lighter than the original as well.

A newer version of the tablet sounds great (and is practically guaranteed, even if not all of these features are). But a full-sized Retina Display could be a tough thing to pull off, and would likely provide some more supply issues for Apple. On the other hand, it’s always possible that Jobs could simply redefine the meaning of Retina Display, trending downward from the 300+ ppi he touted when the iPhone 4 was revealed last June. Since doing anything other than simply quadrupling the resolution the way that the iPhone did would make scaling more problematic, it seems probable that the iPad 2 display will keep the current resolution while perhaps getting other improvements like less glare and better viewing angles. As for the other features, we’ll have to wait and see what shows up on stage with Steve at the next event.

10 copycat Apple ads

Whether you like them or not, find them utterly frustrating or a delightful pleasure to observe, one thing is for sure, Apple knows how to put a successful ad campaign together.

In a case of imitation being the sincerest form of flattery, Business Insider has compiled a list of the top ten commercials most influenced by Apple’s advertising style.

From all white backgrounds to parodies of the “I’m a Mac vs. I’m a PC” campaign, to the Feist music sound-a-likes and up close and personal rotating video shots, these top ten ads have shown no shame in riding on the big waves that Apple’s commercials have made.
