TUAW’s Daily App: HEXETERA

Here’s the deal: based on that screenshot at right, you already want to play this one or you don’t. You can probably guess what it is just from that. It’s a falling block game, except you match triangular tiles rather than blocks. There are goals you need to meet in order to progress through the levels (or there’s an unlimited mode for constant play, as long as you can manage). And there are various power-ups to pick up and carry out as you go through the game. It’s pretty straightforward.

Of course, you don’t see the great music in that screenshot over there. And you don’t see Game Center integration, which … err, sadly, the game doesn’t actually have (though you can keep and share high scores over both Facebook and Twitter).

But honestly, you probably knew right away whether this was one you wanted to play or not. If the idea of another falling block game doesn’t appeal to you, HEXETERA probably isn’t your thing — go ahead and wait until tomorrow when we’ll have another great app in the spotlight. But if that screenshot intrigues you (as it did me), you can pick up HEXETERA on the App Store right now for US 99 cents.

First Look: Ninja Steve for iOS

CEO. Industry Mogul. Superhero. That’s the idea behind the upcoming Ninja Steve app. Inspired by the fake story about Steve Jobs being denied the chance to take shuriken onto his private plane, Ninja Steve transforms an urban legend into a deliciously silly idea for a game.

It features a CEO hero named Steve, who leads a secret double life as a Ninja. The developers assure us that “[o]ur character share the name with Steve Jobs, but is a fictional character, he and his fictional company has no relation to Steve Jobs or Apple.”

Here at TUAW, we haven’t had a chance to play the game — and honestly, we have no idea whether it’s awesome or awful — but we were tickled by the marketing graphics and the developer was kind enough to give us an exclusive first peek at the game promo video, which appears after the jump.

This is not the first time we’ve covered the Ninja Steve meme, here on TUAW. Previously, we saw the fake “iPod ninja” concept ad, which we thought was hilarious.

Got any more Apple Ninja spoofs, games, or tributes to share? Let us know in the comments.

Apple expands lawsuit against Motorola

motorola vs apple

Perhaps the only department at Apple that works longer hours than engineering these days is legal. The most recent legal dust-up in Cupertino has just expanded, as Apple has amended a patent lawsuit against Motorola to include 12 more claims. This particular fracas began in October when Motorola sued Apple, claiming infringement of 18 patents relating to hardware and services.

Apple subsequently counter-sued, claiming that Motorola’s Android phones infringed on a number of Apple patents, mostly covering multi-touch technology. The filing last week adds 12 more patents to the mix, including nine phone patents and three patents that cover set-top box and DVR technology. These patents will probably also get added to Apple’s complaint before the International Trade Commission.

While Apple has 24 patents on the table to Motorola’s 18, that doesn’t necessarily mean much; any number of the patents on either side could be of dubious validity. The most likely outcome is that the two sides will go back and forth filing motions for summary judgements for the next several years. At some point, shortly before either a court or ITC hearing, the lawyers will probably sit down and hammer out a cross-licensing deal that allows both sides to walk away claiming victory, so they can move on to other battles with HTC, Nokia and Microsoft.

TUAW Talkcast tonight at 10pm ET: Two new Mac apps and the culture of Apple

This week on the talkcast (which is what we like to call our podcast, since it’s over on the interactive TalkShoe service), we’ll be talking about all of the most interesting stories out of Cupertino in the last week, including two stories about the culture of Apple, and two brand new Mac apps that are raising some buzz. Additionally, we’ll continue talking about what kinds of gifts are going around this year, and the potential for a few iPad-exclusive publications.

Here’s the master page to listen or join in on the show. To participate live on TalkShoe, you can use the browser-only client (just click the “TalkShoe Web” button on our profile page at 10 PM on Sunday), the embedded Facebook app, or the classic TalkShoe Pro Java client; however, for maximum fun, you should call in.

To call in on regular phone or VoIP lines (take advantage of your free cellphone weekend minutes if you like): dial (724) 444-7444 and enter our talkcast ID, 45077 — during the call, you can request to talk by keying in *8. (That’s a toll call, just so you know.)

If you’ve got a headset or microphone handy on your Mac or your PC, you can connect via the free SJphone or X-Lite SIP clients or by using the TalkShoe client’s ShoePhone tool; basic instructions are here.

We’ll kick things off at 10 PM ET/ 7 PM PT this evening. See you there!

Point Inside is another worthwhile holiday shopping and travel tool

We recently looked at GateGuru, a handy tool to help you navigate around airports. Now I want to point out another good free travel tool, Point Inside, which combines mall maps and info on nearby stores. A new update also allows you to create a wish list. Select a store, and scan an item that you want on your list. The item will be added, and you can share your list on Facebook.

The app produces nice airport maps with lists of stores, ATMs, location of baggage carousels, and parking locations. If you tap on a retail location at either an airport or a mall you’ll get a phone number and a description of what they sell.

There are a few negatives. Like GateGuru it doesn’t have a complete list of airports in smaller towns. It also drops quite a lot of malls in my area, even some big outlet malls. Searching around the country showed the same issue. Some malls that have been long out of business are listed, while many current malls simply aren’t there. The wish list is also a bit odd. You should be able to mail those lists, not just post them on Facebook.

Point Inside is still a handy tool. It’s worth adding to your iPhone if you plan to travel or if you expect to spend some time in bigger malls where you aren’t familiar with the layout.

iPhone, iPad top 2010 "obsessions" list

This may come as no surprise to readers of TUAW, but Apple has scored two of the top three spots on Yahoo’s “10 Obsessions of 2010” list. Coming in at #1 was the iPhone followed by the iPad at #3. Sandwiched between the two was Lindsay Lohan (get your minds out of the gutter).

Yahoo said their choice of candidates for the obsession list were partly based on a person’s need for compulsive, constant web surveillance and vigilance in getting the scoop as soon as any new information was available. That definitely describes the fixation interest most people seemed to have for Apple’s iOS devices this year.

Next year promises only more of the same with the coming of the second generation iPad and the fifth generation iPhone. And who knows? Maybe if Lindsay Lohan decides to stay home in 2011, Apple could sweep the top three if they unveil a real Apple TV.

How To Download And Install Latest Version Of Cydia On Jailbroken iDevice

A new Cydia (cydia_1.0.3366-1) has been released by Saurik and is reportedly pretty fast. If you can’t wait for the jailbreak tools such as Limera1n, etc, to get updated with this new version of Cydia, then here are the steps to download and install Cydia manually on your jailbroken iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad using SSH.

1. Download Cydia Debian Package to your desktop.

You can find all versions of Cydia here: http://apt.saurik.com/cydia/debs/. Choose the version that is the latest. The current latest version we are using in this article is cydia_1.0.3366-1_iphoneos-arm.deb.

2. Connect your iPhone or iPad using OpenSSH with your Computer. Here is a guide on how to install SSH and connect to PC/Mac wirelessly.

3. Copy the Cydia debian file you downloaded in Step 1 to your jailbroken iPhone using an SSH client such as WinSCP for Windows or CyberDuck for Mac. In WinSCP’s dual explorer, you can simply drag and drop the file from your desktop to a folder on your iPhone file system.

4. Install iFile, a powerful file manager app that is available in Cydia.

Search for ‘iFile’ in Cydia and install this app. This app is available in System section of BigBoss repository.

5. Next start iFile by tapping it’s icon from your iPhone Homescreen.

6. Navigate to the folder where you earlier saved the Cydia debian package in Step 3.

7. Tap the cydia_1.0.3366-1_iphoneos-arm.deb and tap ‘Installer’.

8. Tap ‘Done’ when the installation is completed.

9. Respring your iPhone. If you have SBSettings installed on your device, then simply slide your status bar to open up SBSettings and tap Respring. Otherwise do a reboot.

10. That’s it. Open up Cydia and scroll down to see the version to confirm that the installation is properly done.

Cinch: Record Audio and Share It Online With Your iPhone

Cinch is the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch app for the Cinchcast.com web service. Cinchcast can be thought of as a social network built around user generated audio clips. The Cinch iOS app and in turn Cinchcast.com, form a free service that gives users the ability to record, upload and share audio while cultivating an audience through the Cinchast.com social network.

Created by Blogtalkradio and used by infamous new media journalist Robert Scoble, the Cinch iOS app was developed to make the features and functions of Cinchcast.com available on the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch iOS powered devices. Scoble has been quoted as saying, “I use Cinch to interview tech execs and innovators. It is the best way to record audio and share it with friends and audiences.” On the surface, the Cinch iOS app is straightforward and easy to use. When you dig a little deeper into the app, you will find that the simple features and functions of this app become very interesting when mixed with the app’s parent service, Cinchcast.com.

Read more to find out what makes the Cinch iOS app interesting, what it does right and how it could be improved.

What is Cinchcast?

Without Cinchcast.com, the Cinch iOS app is a simple audio recording tool. Similar to the default iOS recording app, a quick press of the record button is all that is needed to start using the app. Cinch’s capabilities however lie beyond simple audio recording. This app is a front-end for Cinchcast.com; to understand why Cinch is a valuable, interesting iOS app, it is important to understand the capabilities of Cinchcast.com.

screenshot

The cinch splash and welcome screens

With Cinchcast.com, users have the opportunity to record audio using the Cinch iOS app, the web based flash audio recorder, or by dialling a telephone number. Users create personal channels and can share audio with their friends using the Cinchcast.com social network, Facebook or Twitter. Users can embed their audio clips and the audio clips of their friends on websites and forums using a YouTube like embed code or an easy to use Cinchcast widget.

If Twitter and Flickr had a love child that talked a lot, that love child would be named Cinch. The Cinch iOS app extends Cinchcast.com onto iOS devices. From their devices, users can record new audio, tag it with detailed information, save it and share it with their audience.

Cinch Features and Functions

Well known blogger, Robert Scoble has a unique and entertaining style of interviewing. His interviews typically centre around Internet industry heavyweights, CEO’s and trailblazers. Accessing these people is difficult and often take place without formal preparation. This is an ideal usage case scenario for the Cinch iOS app. With nothing more than the iPhone we carry around every day, an interview can be conducted anywhere, at any time.

Beyond Scoble style interviews, the Cinch iOS app lends itself well to immediate events such as news and to passive events such as personal audio blogging. Imagine being in the middle of a hurricane and recording what you see or simply archiving your ideas and personal anecdotes on your daily commute to work. From breaking news to passive archiving, the services that Cinch is capable of facilitating are unique and very interesting.

screenshot

Cinchast.com users such as the Scobelizer can be followed and heard on the Cinch iOS app.

Record Audio From Your iOS Device

Recording audio on your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch (with an attached microphone) is the most important feature of the Cinch app. With what may be an overly simplistic one-button interface, users can quickly and easily record audio. The iPhone 4 includes exceptionally high quality microphones, so if you’re lucky enough to have a new iPhone, you will receive the best quality recordings possible without the use of an external mic.

screenshot

Recording and listening is a Cinch. Sharing new audio clips with your friends and fans is also easy.

Add Detailed Information to Audio

After a recording is complete, users have the ability to add additional information to the audio clip. Starting with basic information such as the title, Cinch connects location data and importantly, a 140 character message that will be distributed to the Cinchcast social network.

Interact With the Cinchcast Social Network

This is the most powerful feature of the Cinch iOS app. After recording audio and adding extra information to describe what you have recorded, your message is broadcast across the Cinchcast network, with your friends on Facebook and your followers on Twitter. In addition, if the blog widget has been installed on your website, your message will be automatically published. Without this functionality or the audience that the Cinchcast network has access to, the Cinch iOS app is a simple audio recorder.

screenshot

Cinch audio broadcasts can be commented on and replied directly from within the iOS app.

Listen to Audio on Cinchcast and BlogTalkRadio

Archives of audio can be powerful and valuable. By using the Cinch iOS app to upload your audio to the Cinchcast.com web service, users create personal repositories of audio. These repositories can be organized into collections that become more valuable than they are independently.

screenshot

By pressing More in the app, users can access BlogTalkRadio’s full archive of audio.

What’s Wrong With Cinchcast?

Content is king online and it is difficult to find good quality content on Cinchast.com. Much of the audio presented on the network feels like self-help or marketing material. In the same vein, the Cinch iOS app does very little to help users create content that sounds good. It is difficult to create good quality audio recordings with Cinch. Variables such as the hardware device being used and the environment that the user is located in can not be controlled. However, helping users understand what good quality audio sounds like and how to create it would go a long way. Giving the Cinch community tools to rate the quality of a recording in addition to composing some basic “tips and tricks” documentation may begin to solve this serious issue.

Technically, while the Cinch app will run on the iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch, it only excels on the iPhone. The iPod Touch version requires an additional wired headset with an inline mic while the iPad version of the Cinch app is simply a scaled down version of the iPhone build. It’s nice that the app runs on the iPad, however a full iPad version that takes advantage of the entire screen would be a welcome addition.

Neither Cinchast.com nor the Cinch iOS app have a refined user interface. Both the app and the website are functional, but they both lack the polished graphics and thoughtful user interfaces that make good apps great. Notably, the embedable audio player that is used to make Cinch recordings available on a blog is not attractive and can not be customized. Cinch is currently being actively developed and as with any software in active development, style and user interface refinements are often one of the last things to be completed.

There are no audio editing controls. When I record a podcast or add audio to a blog post that I am writing, I find myself trimming the start and end of the audio. Leaving a few seconds of “dead air” both before and after an audio recording ensures that the recording software is running smoothly while avoiding the opening and closing taps and mouse clicks. Along with audio EQ controls, being able to trim, splice and edit audio using the Cinch app take this app from useful to invaluable.

Why You Should Use The Cinch App

Cinch is the easiest way to record audio on your iPhone and share it online. Cinch is designed to record audio, upload it to the web and share it with your audience. Together, the app and the web service do a very good job of this.

Audio that is recorded with the Cinch app is saved to the web and without any additional action, shared on Facebook and Twitter. After setting up both the Cinch app on your iOS device and configuring an account on Cinchapp.com, recording, uploading and sharing audio can be preformed in as little as 3 clicks.

screenshot

Connecting both Twitter and Facebook to the Cinch app is hassle free. After connection, audio can be broadcast automatically.

You will expand your audience by using Cinch. If you believe in developing and fostering an online audience at all, this single fact should make using this free service an easy sale. Integrating a variety of forms of media increases engagement in content. It doesn’t matter what content you deliver or what message you are trying to convey, some people simply absorb audio better than video or text. Most people become engaged in content when audio and text are used together. This combined with the fact that Cinchcast.com has a growing, loyal community and you will not only expose your content to more people but you will increase the engagement of your existing users by supplementing audio.

Simply put, Cinch is free and reliable. While the app and the service in general have minor issues and improvements that could be made, this is an outstanding app for anyone who has ever (even casually) thought that they would make a good radio host or would like to broadcast snippets of audio in any form.

Weekly Poll: Which Check-In App Do You Use?

When Facebook decided to toss it’s hat into the location-based social network ring, everyone feared the end for the original pioneers of the genre like Foursqare and Gowalla.

Now that the dust has settled and the various services are learning to integrate and play nice, we’re interested to see if the Facebook service has really impacted your use of the other apps. Vote in the poll on the right and help us find out who is king in the location service world.

Leave a comment below and let us know why you use the service that you do. Is it the user base, app design, feature set or something else?

iPhone Game Friday: New Releases

Hey, it’s December!

Any Christmas apps you’re looking forward to playing? ‘Tis the season to be jolly and all that, so let’s get you primed with some fun new titles that the App Store has provided this week.

Chop Chop Caveman

Chop Chop Caveman

Chop Chop Caveman

Gamerizon’s funny “Chop Chop” series continues with Chop Chop Caveman, a familiar and attractive platformer with all the style, art, and polish that you’ve come to expect.

Similar to previous games, you navigate the levels using fairly comfortable touch and slide controls. Tapping above the ground will make you jump, and there are some double-tap style moves reminiscent of the old butt smash from classic Mario games. Your goal is broadly to get the little caveman fed, but besides collecting meat and vegetables (they ate healthy back then), you also pick up pebbles and punt various prehistoric beasties along the way.

It’s good fun and a very easy way to spend some time. There are even achievements, and while some more levels would have been nice, they can only be an update away, and in the meantime there’s still plenty to do and see across the game’s 4 worlds and 20 stages.

Fun With Death

Fun With Death

Fun With Death

Fun With Death is a good example of taking a working gameplay model and tweaking it to make it your own. In this case, you may notice some, uh, homages to the Angry Birds series, both in terms of gameplay and art style.

However, the neat thing about Fun With Death is that it extends the gameplay mechanic by adding a twist: you can also place a variety of objects around each level to help you accomplish your goal. In this case, the goal itself is also more complicated. Instead of just aiming to wipe out every other thing on the screen, Death is an organized fellow and wants to make sure that only red souls get whacked — leaving the blue ones to enjoy their peaceful after-existence.

There is perhaps a slight drop in production values between Angry Birds and Fun With Death, but it’s really just a question of polish and future updates will no doubt clean up the occasionally stiff physics and dry sound effects. Luckily, neither of those complaints has any bearing on just how fun this little game is — if you loved Angry Birds and are hoping for something more involved, then definitely check out Fun With Death,

Floop

Floop

Floop

I hope you’re fond of throwing things cause I’ve got another catapulting title for you. Floop is a great take on the concept that has you flinging food across levels to reach the waiting mouth of a creature at the end.

As you progress, you unlock more animals than the squirrel you start out with, but the gameplay remains the same. Throwing the food follows the usual convention of touching and dragging to determine direction and throw strength, and the rest is essentially a very colourful and well designed game of golf, where you try to get your ball (food) in the hole (mouth) in as few tosses as possible while avoiding the obstacles.

Level design is quite clever and diverse, and the art is simply gorgeous, so there’s plenty to recommend about Floop.

Zapples

Zapples

Zapples

The homages continue with Zapple, a solid take on a concept made famous by one of my favourite App Store titles, Splode. In Zapple, instead of the whimsical story of igniting light-bearing poofy things, you’re out to zap some really bad apples — literally.

The idea is to create a chain reaction that catches as many of the Zapples as possible; just tap to zap. As you get into the higher levels, you’ll need to zap a lot of the Zapples on screen to progress and it can be tough to catch as many as you need, making for an unexpectedly great challenge. An upcoming update will feature helpful powerups, and in the meantime you can enjoy the OpenFeint integration to collect high scores.

Also similar to Splode is the exquisite production quality of Zapples. Music is cinematic and mysterious, the art is beautifully rendered, and animations are smooth. The menu interface could use a bit of polish, but once you get into the game everything is just as you’d want. If you’re after an addictive time-passer then Zapples doesn’t disappoint.

Dots & Boxes

Dots & Boxes

Dots & Boxes

Dots & Boxes is a streamlined and uncluttered version of the classic pen & paper game that lets you compete against friends beside you or anywhere in the world via the internet and Game Center integration.

The game is simple but requires planning and some tricky moves; when it’s your turn, you tap two points to join them with a line. Your goal is to create squares, but you must be the one to close the square in order to win a point. Once you win a point, you get another turn, so setting yourself up for lengthy combos is a good way to make quick work of the opposition.

As a freebie, Dots & Boxes is great. It’s agile, well designed, and quick to load, and it dispenses with sound effects and music in favour of plain old fashioned gameplay. If you like puzzles then have a look — it’s old fashioned, but it’s definitely fun.

iBooks, Kindle or Nook? Battle of the E-Reader Apps

The war of electronic reading devices is at its peak and has taken a strange turn not seen in many other rivalries. Even if you give in and buy an iOS device instead of an Amazon Kindle or Barnes and Noble Nook, you can still be a patron to these companies by using their free iPhone or iPad apps.

Below we’ll take a quick look at the three big names in book reading: iBooks, Kindle and Nook. I’ll give you my opinion of each based on a number of comparable factors like interface, features and shopping experience so you can decide which is best for you.

90 Awesome iOS Apps for Freelancers

Freelancers are constantly on the move. Not being tied to a specific office often leads to working anywhere we have an Internet connection. What better way to manage your freelance business on the move than with your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad?

Below you’ll find over 90 apps that will empower you as a freelancer to get more done when you’re away from your computer. Whether you’re a designer, writer, consultant or anything else, you’ll find tons of helpful tools.

Express for WordPress: It’s WordPress Made Simple

Have you been disappointed with the WordPress app and wanted more flexible ways to publish to your WordPress blog on the go? Thanks to the new Express for WordPress app and the WooTumblog plugin from WooThemes, you can now quickly publish a variety of content to your WordPress blog from your iOS device.

Express for WordPress is a new app designed to let you post anything you want to your WordPress-powered blog from your iPhone. One major problem of blogging apps is that most of us don’t want to write long, detailed posts from a cramped screen. Micro-blogging solutions such as Tumblr let you create shorter posts featuring an image, link, or quote, but WordPress sites are typically filled with longer posts. WooThemes is aiming to change that by making it easy to post simpler content to WordPress.

Dropbox-Powered iPhone Text Editors

Dropbox is one of the best free tools to ever hit the Mac. Much more than a simple backup utility, people use Dropbox in all sorts of different ways, from hosting entire websites to sharing files with classmates.

The Dropbox API makes it possible for developers to integrate Dropbox functionality into their own apps. The most popular use of this technology we’re seeing on the iPhone is a recent crop of Dropbox-compatible note-taking applications. These apps allow you to create notes on your iPhone and then access them on any computer or mobile device where you have Dropbox installed. Below we’ll take a brief look at a few of these Dropbox note apps so you can decide which is best for you.

Is the iPhone Ruining Film and Photography?

The web has become saturated with surprisingly high quality content created entirely on iPhones. Never before has a device that contains a camera merely as a secondary feature so impacted the worlds of photography and cinematography.

The question is, are these industries better or worse with the arrival of the iPhone? Is this device improving the digital world by putting multimedia-based art forms into the hands of the masses or is it critically cheapening decades of hard work from serious professionals? Let’s discuss.
