Apple’s Bud Tribble will testify before Senate committee, says Franken

In the ongoing commotion around location, privacy and what your iPhone knows about what you did last summer, the witness list for upcoming Senate Judiciary subcommittee hearings on mobile privacy has been announced. Senator Al Franken’s (D-MN) office told The Loop that Apple’s VP of software technology, Guy L. “Bud” Tribble, will be there, along with regulators, privacy advocates and Google’s VP of public policy.

Franken invited the companies to send representatives to his hearing a couple of weeks ago, as the location issues were making news. Tribble has been on the hot seat before when it comes to Congressional oversight of digital privacy; he appeared at a similar hearing last summer, alongside Facebook’s CTO and Google’s lead privacy engineer. He’s also one of the longest-serving Apple and NeXT veterans, and is credited with identifying the legendary Reality Distortion Field power of Steve Jobs. Perhaps he should borrow the field generator for his testimony.

The hearings will begin on May 10 at 10 am Eastern time. If you’re watching on C-SPAN, keep an eye on the senators as Tribble enters the room… the ones that recoil and run away are almost certainly Klingons.

Apple now ranks #35 in Fortune 500

Apple climbed its way into the elite Top 50 of the Fortune 500 list for this year. The Cupertino company climbed 21 spots to claim the #35 position between Medco Health solutions and Boeing. Apple was propelled upwards by sales of the iPad, the iPhone and content from the iOS App Store. Combined with its iTunes and Mac hardware sales, the company netted US$14 billion in profits in 2010 and is counted among the 20 most profitable companies in the world.

Apple leads both the tablet and smartphone market and its computer sales are growing. When looking at revenue for the Computer and Office equipment category, Apple settled in second place behind market leader HP and edged out Dell which dropped down to third place. Apple’s forecast for 2011 remains strong — the company continues to expand into new markets with its iOS devices and its Mac hardware line continues to be updated with the latest generation hardware.

iPad 2 sells out in 4 hours in Beijing

The iPad 2 made its official debut in China on May 6 and the popular tablet device sold out in just four hours at the flagship Apple store in Beijing. According to M.I.C Gadget, the scene at the Beijing store was reportedly wild with hundreds of customers waiting in line, scalpers on the sidelines looking to buy and sell iPad 2s for cash, security guards circling the crowd and even a German Shepherd on hand to keep the scene under control.

Similar to previous launches, demand for the iPad 2 greatly outstripped supply, a scenario confirmed by Apple during its latest earning conference call. Apple’s acting-CEO Tim Cook said the company was facing “the mother of all backlogs” with the iPad 2. Apple is working on increasing production and hopes to reduce iPad 2 wait times in the upcoming quarters.

Quality issues with LG manufactured panels to blame for iPad 2 shortage

Quality control problems with LCD panels from LG Display may have contributed to the prolonged shortage of the iPad 2. According to the report from Digitimes, early batches of the 9.7-inch panels supplied by LG had a light leak issue that limited LG’s ability to meet demand. As a result, LG only produced 3.2 million panels in the first quarter of 2011, a figure that trails the four million panels produced by Samsung. This report corroborates an earlier report from IHS iSuppli that blamed the iPad 2 shortage on an unknown manufacturing problem with LCDs.

LG has reportedly fixed this light leakage problem and is back on track to ramp up production this spring. Chimei Innolux is also prepping to contribute to the supply of IPS panels for the iPad 2 starting in May. If both these manufacturers can boost production, then perhaps iPad 2 supply constraints can be eased in this current quarter.

Cydia Search lets you search for jailbreak apps from your desktop

Cydia Search

Searching for the perfect Jailbreak app in Cydia on the iPhone can be a frustratingly slow experience. Cydia Search from Planet-iPhones.com eases your pain by allowing you to browse through the plethora of Cydia apps by category, repository or author, all from the comfort of a desktop browser. If you know what you’re looking for, you can search by name, description, author, version number or one of the many other search filters, which should make short work of finding what you’re looking for.

Once you’ve located a package you’re interested in, you can check out who wrote it, the price, the current version, which repository it’s stored on, as well as view the actual Cydia entry as it would appear on an iPhone. While this isn’t the first implementation of a desktop Cydia interface — ModMyi also provides a searchable front end for Cydia on the desktop — Cydia Search provides a fast, slick experience that’s well worth checking out.

It’s great for those people sitting on the fence as to whether or not they want to jailbreak their iDevice since it allows them to view all the programs, add-ons, tweaks and themes before they take the plunge. Likewise, if you’re looking for a new app or update, Cydia Search will allow you to find what you’re looking for before you head to Cydia on your device to download it.

Untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.3.3 now available from iPhone dev team

Jailbreakers hesitant to update to iOS 4.3.3 can now do so without losing their ability to jailbreak. The iPhone dev team confirmed iOS 4.3.3 is still vulnerable to the untethered jailbreak exploit that @i0n1c created for 4.3.1. Released earlier this week, this version of iOS fixes the location bug that made headlines a few weeks ago.

Both the PwnageTool and redsn0w have been updated and will jailbreak iOS 4.3.3 devices including the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 (GSM), iPod touch 3G, iPod touch 4G, iPad1 and AppleTV 2G (v4.3;8F202). As we have seen in the past, the iPad 2 is not yet supported and its jailbreak is still under development.

Head over to the dev team’s blog for more information about this untethered jailbreak. As with all jailbreak attempts, follow the directions carefully and proceed at your own risk.

TUAW’s Daily iOS App: Enduro

Enduro is an old Atari game that’s now on the App Store, and it’s available as a universal version for iPhone or iPad. Personally, I don’t really remember this one (it’s a racing game that’s similar to Pole Position, though the big innovation was that you could race through different environments like fog or snow), but bigger Atari fans than myself might be excited to see that it’s now playable on iOS.

The reason why Enduro is interesting, however, is that, as Touch Arcade reports, it’s an unsanctioned port. Atari has already released several games for the iPhone, and those are all officially sponsored, presumably giving a little bit of money back to the original creators (or in most cases, whoever owns the rights to them). But for Enduro, developer Nemo has strangely been able to publish the app without the official rights to the software — it’s a completely unofficial port.

At any rate, the game’s currently available on the App Store for US$0.99. If you want to play it, you better pick it up fast. Nemo could actually go get the rights to the game to publish it — that’s exactly what the folks behind the Commodore 64 app did, and that app is now official and approved. But there may be some rough waters ahead for this one if the original Enduro IP owners get word of Nemo’s app.

Photographer creates amazing photo book with iPhone and Camera+

Almost every day, we see people putting the iPhone 4’s camera to amazing use, but New York wedding photographer Joshua Brown took it to the next level. Using tap tap tap’s US$1.99 Camera+, Joshua created an entire photo book of a recent trip to Italy. The results are eyebrow-raising to say the least; every shot looks like it was taken with a high-end DSLR rather than the iPhone 4’s decent but decidedly consumer-level camera.

“I actually went out there to shoot a wedding in Florence, so I had my [Canon] 5D with me, but I really felt like I wanted to just relax and not haul a bunch of gear around all week,” says Joshua. “I did actually bring the 5D out a few times, but all the images that made it to the book were from the iPhone.”

You can check out some choice shots at tap tap tap’s blog, or check out a preview of the entire book here (sorry, iOS users, it’s in Flash it should work fine on the iPad or iPhone). Although it’s not going to replace my DSLR, after seeing Joshua’s shots, I’ll likely take my iPhone 4’s camera a lot more seriously than I have thus far. As an aside, if you have an iPhone 4 and are even remotely interested in taking above-average pictures with it, Camera+ is a must-have.

iPhone Dev-team has just pushed the RedSn0w 0.9.6RC15, the untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.3.3 firmware. You can download RedSn0w 0.9.6RC15 for Windows and Mac from the links below. RedSn0w 0.9.6RC15 incorporates i0nic’s exploit to provide untethered iOS 4.3.3 jailbreak.

redsn0w 0.9.6rc15
NOTES

  1. ultrasn0w unlockers must stay away from redsn0w! Use only a custom IPSW to update to 4.3.3, to avoid updating your baseband.
  2. ultrasn0w has been updated to v1.2.3 to be compatible with iOS 4.3.3 and earlier (the ultrasn0w update does not include any new baseband support!). Please reboot your iPhone using the normal “slide to power off” swipe after installing ultrasn0w 1.2.3.
  3. By popular demand, redsn0w now allows you to enable multitasking gestures (although most will find it useful only on iPads).
  4. iPad2 update: The iPad 2 jailbreak remains under development. As you may know, the original exploit @comex developed in the first week of the iPad2 release was mysteriously fixed by Apple within days of its development. Partly because of this, don’t expect much public discussion of the iPad2 jailbreak until it’s actually finished and ready for release (and please avoid asking about it). In all liklihood, it will be a userland exploit like the first (unreleased) one, not dependent on bootrom dumps. The first one can’t be released even for those with the original 4.3 firmware due to legal (distribution) reasons.

… three in a row! Apple released iOS 4.3.3 on Wednesday, and once again the untethered jailbreak exploit that @i0n1c created for 4.3.1 still works. That makes it an unprecedented three firmwares where the same userland exploit works. We’re not exactly sure why Apple hasn’t fixed the hole yet, but we’re not complaining!

oday’s PwnageTool and redsn0w incorporate @i0n1c’s port to 4.3.3 (it’s ironic that such a long-lasting untether doesn’t even have an official name!). It also of course uses geohot’s limera1n bootrom exploit to inject the jailbreak. The 4.3.3 untether works on all devices that actually support 4.3.3 except for the iPad2.
