One final insult: what if iOS 4.2 goes live for iPhone before iPad

One last iOS 4.2 thought before it lands today: with iPad users having had to wait the entire life of their device for iOS 4 functionality to arrive even as iPhone users have had most of the 4.2 features for months, what about the pecking order today as far as how 4.2 is pushed out on Apple’s servers? This is, after all, the first time there’s been a simultaneous release of the same numbered version of an iOS update for both iPad and iPhone users. Until now it’s been all 3.1 iPhone and 3.2 for iPad, and then 4.0 for iPhone and 3.2 for iPad, then later it was 4.1 for iPhone and 3.2 for iPad… you get the idea. With iOS 4.2 expected to put a massive strain on Apple’s servers today, it would make sense for Apple to push out 4.2 for iPhone and 4.2 for iPad at times that are at least slightly staggered. But Apple had better be careful about how it approaches that, for fear of insulting a core chunk of its user base.

Statistically speaking, most iPad and iPhone users won’t even know iOS 4.2 exists until sometime later this week when their iTunes automatically checks for it, discovers it, and alerts them as to its existence. But among those who are the most clued-in, the repeated clicking of the update button in iTunes has already commenced. And for clued-in iPad users, who’ve already developed a complex about having had to wait so long for iOS 4 to arrive for them in any version, seeing iPhone users celebrate across the internet at the arrival of 4.2 for iPhone even as they’re left being informed that 3.2.2 is still their current version, such a storyline could cause a near revolt based on bruised feelings.

If Apple is smart about things, it’ll go ahead and put iOS 4.2 on the server for iPhone and iPad at the same time, and if the whole thing slows down because of it then so be it. Or Apple could do something truly novel and let iPad users have first crack at it, even if only by a few minutes, as a thank-you for their long running patience.

How To Convert a SIM to a MicroSIM

Perhaps like me, you had the problem using your sim on the iPhone 4  and iPad  using a micro-SIM.

Above is a picture of the SIM cards – as you can see, they vary a lot, but the only parts that matter to us are the contacts which are common to the MicroSIM and SIM.  Electronically, the SIM and MicroSIM are the same so we can cut the rest away and not worry (so long as we are careful).

To begin with, line up the three contact on the MicroSIM with the same ones on the SIM card.  You can just look for the 2 centre lines and make sure they are in line and that the top of the MicroSIM is straight. Then get your meat cleaver and press down gently to score a straight line.

Cut along the score line carefully.  Once you have done this, line the top of the SIM with the MicroSIM and you should see that the contacts are aligned.

Turn the SIM & MicroSIM round 180 degrees, line up the bottom and repeat with the meat cleaver, then cut along the score line once again.

The SIM should now be the same height as the MicroSIM – we are halfway there!

Line up the centre of the MicroSIM with the SIM so that we can be sure it will be aligned within the iPad

Repeat the process with the meat cleaver and scissors, then you should have a SIM which is almost the right size, save for the top edge and corner.

Once again, repeat the process with the meat cleaver and scissors, then you should have a SIM which is the same size apart from the corner.

Cut off the corner of the SIM card – you can just use the meat cleaver for this if it is nice & sharp.

Your SIM card is almost ready to go in to your iPad.  As you can see, the AT&T MicroSIM has slightly rounded corners.

Use your meat cleaver to take off the tiniest of amounts.  Remember, you can take more off, but you can’t put it back on.

Your SIM should now fit in your iPad MicroSIM tray.

Gently insert it in to your iPhone 4 – iPad 3G.

Will Apple Announce Web Based iTunes Tomorrow?

We will never forget whatever Apple’s announcing tomorrow, according to the teaser text on the company’s website. “Ah, November 16th. The day Apple launched iTunes for the web,” we might say in the year 2056. That’s not to say that Apple’s launching iTunes for the web, but a web-based version of iTunes would certainly be a relatively big announcement.
It could be a more mundane announcement, such as unlimited iTunes music downloads for a fixed monthly price. Rumors that Apple’s been pursuing such features have been floating around for a bit, but competitors have been offering unlimited music downloads for years now.

(More on Techland: Apple Considering Monthly Fees for Unlimited iTunes Music?)
But Apple may finally be making good use of its Lala acquisition. Lala was a cloud-based music service that functioned similarly to iTunes but lived entirely on the web.
So imagine instead of downloading iTunes on your computer, you’d open it up in a website. All your previously-purchased songs and videos would be there and you’d hopefully be able to upload and synchronize media from your hard drive that you’d gathered from other places.
The killer use would be to open up iTunes on your iPhone or iPad and have access to all of your music and videos in the same way. As long as you have an internet connection, you’d be able to stream anything.
If you’re without a connection, you’d hopefully be able to transfer songs to your device’s storage similarly to how you currently transfer music to your iPhone, except that you wouldn’t have to connect it to your computer first.
It’d be a direct transfer. Just like you can buy and download music directly on your iPhone and iPad now, you’d be able to download tracks from your own collection as well.
(More on Techland: Google Music Rumors: Labels Happy About iTunes Alternative?)
With Google’s rumored music service apparently just around the corner, Apple would be wise to make a big push for the cloud. Google rarely creates downloadable software, so its music service would almost certainly be a cloud-based, web-only affair. Apple’s already betting big on streaming-only, rental content with Apple TV. Perhaps it’s about to try the same with music, albeit with both download-to-own and monthly subscription options instead.

iPhone jailbreaking unlock made legal

Owners of iPhones and other smartphones are one step closer toward taking complete control of their gadgets, thanks to a new government ruling Monday on the practice of “jailbreaking.”
This weekend has seen a flurry of activity about digital rights, but the biggest news dropped Monday morning, when the Library of Congress announced that it had made the controversial practice of “jailbreaking” your iPhone — or any other cell phone — legal.

Jailbreaking — the practice of unlocking a phone (and particularly an iPhone) so it can be used on another network and/or run other applications than those approved by Apple — has technically been illegal for years. Most jailbroken phones are used on the U.S. T-Mobile network or on overseas carriers, or are used to run applications that Apple refuses to sell, such as Safari ad-blocking apps, alternate keyboard layouts, or programs that change the interface to the iPhone’s SMS system and the way its icons are laid out.
While technically illegal, no one has been sued or prosecuted for the practice. (Apple does seriously frown on the practice, and jailbreaking your phone will still void your warranty.) It’s estimated that more than a million iPhone owners have jailbroken their handsets.

Apple fought hard against the legalization, arguing that jailbreaking was a form of copyright violation. The FCC disagreed, saying that jailbreaking merely enhanced the inter-operability of the phone, and was thus legitimate under fair-use rules.

The upshot is that now anyone can jailbreak or otherwise unlock any cell phone without fear of legal penalties, whether you want to install unsupported applications or switch to another cellular carrier. Cell phone companies are of course still free to make it difficult for you to do this — and your warranty will probably still be voided if you do — but at least you won’t be fined or imprisoned if you jailbreak a handset.

In addition to the jailbreaking exemption, the FCC announced a few other rules that have less sweeping applicability but are still significant:

• Professors, students and documentary filmmakers are now allowed, for “noncommercial” purposes, to break the copy protection measures on DVDs to be used in classroom or other not-for-profit environments. This doesn’t quite go so far as to grant you and me the right to copy a DVD so we can watch it in two rooms of the house, but it’s now only one step away.

• As was the topic in the GE ruling I wrote about, the FCC allows computer owners to bypass dongles (hardware devices used in conjunction with software to guarantee the correct owner is behind the keyboard) if they are no longer in operation and can’t be replaced. Dongles are rarities in consumer technology products now, but industrial users are probably thrilled about this, as many go missing and are now impossible to obtain.

• Finally, people are now free to circumvent protection measures on video games — but, strangely, only to investigate and correct security flaws in those games. (Another oddity: Other computer software is not part of this ruling, just video games.)

Cydia Is Now Saving iOS 4.2 SHSH Blobs

The iPhone developer and hacker behind Sn0wbreeze has confirmed that Cydia has started saving SHSH Blobs of iOS 4.2 betas for the next untethered jailbreak on the final version of iOS 4.2.

Now as to why this is important? Geohot’s Limera1n uses a userland exploit from Comex to make an untethered jailbreak for all iOS 4.1 devices. While Apple cant patch the original hardware based Limera1n exploit, the userland exploit though has been patched in the final version of iOS 4.2 firmware.

The next update to Limera1n based iOS 4.2 jailbreak tool will require SHSH blobs for iOS 4.1 for an untethered jailbreak on iOS 4.2. So if you don’t save your SHSH blobs now, you will get tethered jailbreak on iOS 4.2, NOT untethered.

Since Apple hasn’t released iOS 4.2 to public yet, now is the time to save your SHSH blobs to make sure you get an untethered jailbreak once iOS 4.2 is out. Once the public version of iOS 4.2 is released, Apple will stop signing the old firmware, making it impossible for you to save blobs for iOS 4.1. You can follow our step by step guide posted here to save SHSH blobs on iOS 4.1 before it is too late.

Mac Pro 2010 EFI Firmware Update 1.5 problem error

if like me you have a Mac Pro and have  tried to update firmware  (Mac Pro EFI Firmware Update 1.5)

without success, I recommend how to fix the problem with Firmware Restoration CD 1.9

About Mac Pro EFI Firmware Update 1.5

This update is recommended for all Mac Pro (Mid 2010) models and addresses the following issues:

  • Resolves an issue that prevented the firmware password prompt from being displayed
  • Resolves an issue that prevented the Boot Picker from being presented if Ethernet is connected to a network without DHCP

To complete the firmware update, wait for your Mac Pro to finish installing and shutdown. Hold down the power button until the power indicator light flashes, or you hear a long tone, then release the power button.  A gray screen with an Apple logo and progress bar will appear while the update is taking place. When the update is complete your Mac Pro will startup normally.
Important: The update may take a few minutes. Do not unplug, shutdown, restart or disturb your computer while the update is taking place.

iOS 4.2 Jailbreak

The iOS 4.2 jailbreak may be delayed because Cydia is not yet ready for the new firmware, according to a tweet from Comex.

However, a 4.2 jailbreak might be delayed because Cydia doesn’t work on 4.2 yet. Not sure how close @chpwn is to finishing his fixes.

Comex also noted earlier that anyone with blobs for 4.1 or earlier should be able to get an untethered 4.2 jailbreak.

Anyone with blobs for 4.1 or earlier should be able to get an untethered 4.2 jailbreak; this is not done but is being actively worked on.

Apple yesterday released the new iOS 4.2 GM Seed firmware to developers which indicates the public release is coming very soon.

The 58-inch iPhone Table in Action [Video]

We covered the Table Connect for iPhone (a 58-inch surface that mirrors your iPhone screen) a few days ago, and now the developers posted a video of the “device” in action: as you can see in the video above, the table requires you to start an app on the iPhone (likely available through jailbreak) and plug in the cable. Wifi is not supported at this point.

The two guys in the video seem to access the Springboard just fine, they swipe between pages and launch the Photos app. It doesn’t look like a fake, as many readers claimed. The iPhone also seems to be able to output UI elements on that bigger screen just fine.

The Table Connect is still in development, so we’ll keep you up to date with the project.

Update: some readers have pointed out that the guy in the video holds the power button down when firing up the app required to output the iPhone screen.

Just a little heads up to inform you all that the iPhone Phonebook SIM card hacktivation trick has been completely blocked by Apple. The iPhone developer and hacker Sherif Hashim who first found this trick back in July has confirmed this on his Twitter account.

Sometime today, apple has fixed the bug thru which Phonebook sim cards used to activate, they r of NO USE anymore, don’t depend on/buy them

Fortunately, we ve hacktivation supplied by new jailbreak tools based on LR exploit, PB sim was a good help during spirit & star jbs thu

Phonebook SIM card were required back in those userland based jailbreak days, with tools like JailbreakMe and Spirit to bypass “Connect to iTunes” screen.
