the iPod Nano hasn’t been jailbroken

So I won pink 8gb iPod Nano at some awards I was at recently and hacked it on the flight home. I’ve successfully done a basic springboard hack, figured out how to bypass the cache comparison and uncovered some interesting stuff as whats to come on the iPod Nano.

The springboard hack is just the removal of a app and creation of a blank space. Not that amazing, but whats important is the bypass of Nano’s cache comparison, which compares any modded SB file and reverts it if it doesn’t like it, this opens up the possibility of hacking and modding, while not adding bootloaders or any of that fun stuff.

Next is the discovery in some of the device’s plists of reference to support of Movies, TV Shows, Apps, Games, vCards, Calender events and so on, with a few other cool things like a passcode lock. With the bypass I figured out, I hope to enable these pretty soon. It seems like the OS is a rehashed version of the previous Nano’s OS.

iPhone 5 and iPad 2 to Feature a Dual-Core CPU

An analyst at Rodman & Renshaw claims that the upcoming Apple iPad 2 will feature a dual-core CPUtocompete with the likes of RIM PlayBook, and the Android “Honeycomb” based Motorola Tablet.
Apple is on track to refresh the iPad by March and iPhone by late summer. A key component upgrade across these platforms will be a dual-core processor featuring a pair of 1GHz ARM Cortex A9 cores.

If this happens, it will be the first iOS product from the Cupertino-based company to sport a dual-core chip. And since both the current iPad and iPhone 4 shares same A4 CPU, it will be a no brainer for Apple to include the same chip in iPhone 5 that they are going to use in iPad 2.

The analyst also told CNET something about the Verizon iPhone:

iPhone volumes could also be maintained at the 15 million/quarter level through next year. The launch at Verizon could support an incremental 8 million units.

There is now a new app available on the App Store which gives you full access to WikiLeaks’ old and new archives. Dubbed as WikiLeaks App, it delivers recent and old updates along with tweets, all presented in a nice and clean interface. How to Unlock Your iPhone 4.2.1 with UltraSn0w

The Dev Team has updated their UltraSn0w iPhone unlock for iOS 4.2.1. UltraSn0w 1.2 will unlock iPhone 4 baseband 01.59.00 and iPhone 3G/3GS basebands 04.26.08, 05.11.07, 05.12.01, 05.13.04 and now 06.15.00.

If your iPhone 4 is not on baseband 01.59.00, you will not be able to unlock it. If your iPhone 3G or 3GS is on one of the baseband version mentioned above, then you can follow the instructions below…

If your iPhone 3G or 3GS is not on one of the baseband version mentioned above, you will have to first update your baseband to 06.15.00. See our PwnageTool

Step 1: Make sure your iPhone is jailbroken using PwnageTool

Step 2: Launch Cydia, and search for UltraSn0w.

Step 3: Download UltraSn0w.

Step 4: Reboot your iPhone.

Your iPhone is now unlocked. There is no real way to test it until you pop a different SIM card in.

Untethered iOS 4.2.1 Jailbreak Confirmed!

Unlock iOS 4.2.1 on iPhone 3G/3GS with Ultrasn0w 1.2

iPhone Dev Team has just released a new version of Ultrasnow to unlock iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS, still there is no news about iphone 4 user and its looks like that they have to wait for some more times. If you are using iPhone 4 and using ultrasn0w for unlock then you should just stay away from iOS 4.2.1 update from iTunes because this version of ultrsn0w will not unlock iPhone 4?s baseband.

Here are the complete instructions posted by iPhone Dev Team:
Today we’re pleased to announce our free carrier unlock for iPhone3G/3GS owners with a baseband later than 05.13.04. The unlock for that baseband exploited the AT+XAPP command, thanks to a crash initially discovered by @sherif_hashim (@Oranav also found this crash). So what hole are we exploiting today, since Apple closed that AT+XAPP hole? Well, we’re exploiting the exact same hole!
It turns out that the very first iPad firmware 3.2.2 has baseband version 06.15.00 still vulnerable to AT+XAPP. The iPad baseband is built for the exact same baseband chip as the iPhone3G/3GS — they’re fully compatible! Some of us have been running 06.15 for weeks now on our iPhones in preparation for this release.
Since 06.15 is a higher version than 05.14 or 05.15 (where AT+XAPP is gone), anyone stuck at those versions can simply upgrade to 06.15 to unlock again! Luckily for us, Apple *still* provides the iPad FW 3.2.2 with this vulnerable baseband right from their own servers. (Grab it now, before they take it down!)
We’ve been busy updating both PwnageTool and redsn0w to make the baseband update as seamless as possible.
1. First up is “PwnageTool 4.1.3 Unlock Edition”. It has a special dialog box which will ask you if you want to update to the iPad baseband. You must already have the iPad 3.2.2 IPSW on your computer (see the above link)….so just point PwnageTool at it (or let it find it on its own if you’re in “simple” mode).
2. Directly after PwnageTool 4.1.3 is available, the official ultrasn0w repo http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com will be updated with ultrasn0w 1.2, which covers iPhone 4 baseband 01.59.00 and iPhone 3G/3GS basebands 04.26.08, 05.11.07, 05.12.01, 05.13.04 and now 06.15.00.
3. Finally, we’ll release an update to redsn0w today for those without Macs and can’t run PwnageTool. The new redsn0w will give you the option to update your baseband to 06.15 too.
WARNING — YOU DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK! PLEASE UNDERSTAND THE CONSEQUENCES OF UPDATING TO 06.15.
1. There is no way to come back down from 06.15, and there’s no hiding the baseband version from Apple. You’ll be voiding your warranty in a very obvious way.
2. If some future baseband comes out with a critical fix, you won’t be able to update to it if it remains down in the 05.xx sequence (then again, you wouldn’t update to it if you wanted to keep your unlock anyway).
3. Starting with FW 4.2.1 if you have 06.15 on your iPhone you won’t ever be able to restore to stock firmware (it will fail). You’ll need to only restore to custom IPSWs (then again, if you’re unlocker you should already be doing that).
Certainly don’t update to 06.15 if you don’t need to! Only do this if you need the unlock and you’re stuck on 05.14 or 05.15, and you’re willing to assume the above risks.
This PwnageTool also contains a 4.2.1 bundle for iPhone3G owners…for all else, it’s still only 4.1. If you have an iPhone3GS with an old bootrom, the new redsn0w will handle 4.2.1 for you (in fact it covers 4.2.1 for all devices, even though some of them are still tethered at 4.2.1 until @comex can work some untethering magic). iPhone3GS users with old bootroms who want to go to 4.2.1 should not use this PwnageTool! Update to stock 4.2.1 first, then use the upcoming redsn0w to update your baseband.

Cydia to the Mac

Apple is busily working to bring the App Store to the Mac and now Saurik has announced that he will be bringing Cydia to the Mac as well.

According to TUAW, Saurik presented at 360|MacDev giving an overview of his upcoming jailbreak store for Mac OS X, Cycript, and Cydia Substrate.

Currently, Cydia Installer has been used by about 10% of all iPhone users, or about 10 million devices. There are well over 30,000 packages available for iOS, and a lot of open source material can be downloaded from Cydia. He refers to Cydia as a store for things that are not apps, but extensions of what iOS devices can do.

Freeman felt that the same type of store would be useful for Mac OS X devices; the result is a Mac Cydia, which will be available “within weeks.” With today’s news that the Mac App Store will not support in-app purchases, something that is critical to the freemium app model that is so successful in the iOS world, a Mac Cydia might be just the web store for a number of Mac developers.

How To Download And Install Latest Version Of Cydia On Jailbroken iDevice

A new Cydia (cydia_1.0.3366-1) has been released by Saurik and is reportedly pretty fast. If you can’t wait for the jailbreak tools such as Limera1n, etc, to get updated with this new version of Cydia, then here are the steps to download and install Cydia manually on your jailbroken iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad using SSH.

1. Download Cydia Debian Package to your desktop.

You can find all versions of Cydia here: http://apt.saurik.com/cydia/debs/. Choose the version that is the latest. The current latest version we are using in this article is cydia_1.0.3366-1_iphoneos-arm.deb.

2. Connect your iPhone or iPad using OpenSSH with your Computer. Here is a guide on how to install SSH and connect to PC/Mac wirelessly.

3. Copy the Cydia debian file you downloaded in Step 1 to your jailbroken iPhone using an SSH client such as WinSCP for Windows or CyberDuck for Mac. In WinSCP’s dual explorer, you can simply drag and drop the file from your desktop to a folder on your iPhone file system.

4. Install iFile, a powerful file manager app that is available in Cydia.

Search for ‘iFile’ in Cydia and install this app. This app is available in System section of BigBoss repository.

5. Next start iFile by tapping it’s icon from your iPhone Homescreen.

6. Navigate to the folder where you earlier saved the Cydia debian package in Step 3.

7. Tap the cydia_1.0.3366-1_iphoneos-arm.deb and tap ‘Installer’.

8. Tap ‘Done’ when the installation is completed.

9. Respring your iPhone. If you have SBSettings installed on your device, then simply slide your status bar to open up SBSettings and tap Respring. Otherwise do a reboot.

10. That’s it. Open up Cydia and scroll down to see the version to confirm that the installation is properly done.
