Jailbreak iPhone 4 On iOS 4.3 Beta With PwnageTool

If you have been following the iOS jailbreak scene, you will be aware that Apple had recently released a beta version of its iOS 4.3 firmware that among other things brings personal mobile hotspot to GSM variants of the iPhone. Now, if you are a developer who has signed up to the iPhone Developer Standard/Enterprise programs, you may already have access to this upcoming iOS firmware in beta variant that you can install on your iPhone.

Now a new custom PwnageTool bundle that can jailbreak this beta version of iOS 4.3 is now out for those of you interested. Do note that the procedure is extremely complicated and do not proceed unless you are an advanced user (if you have access to the Developer Standard program, you probably are already one!). The creators have pointed out that you will need a Mac for the process. Also, the PwnageTool bundle for iOS 4.3 beta requires users to create their own ramdisk and will not upgrade baseband during the jailbreak process. Also, it is a semi-tethered jailbreak and you can find the downloadable here.

In any case, this is a complicated procedure and do not proceed unless you are well aware of the potential consequences.

Apple’s Steve Jobs takes medical leave again

For the second time in two years, Apple CEO Steve Jobs is taking leave of absence from the company because of a medical condition, according to a letter Jobs sent to Apple employees.

“At my request, the board of directors has granted me a medical leave of absence so I can focus on my health. I will continue as CEO and be involved in major strategic decisions for the company,” Jobs says in the letter.

Tim Cook will take control of the company in Jobs’ absence. Jobs says he has “great confidence that Tim and the rest of the executive management team will do a terrific job executing the exciting plans we have in place for 2011.”

Jobs’ letter continues: “I love Apple so much and hope to be back as soon as I can. In the meantime, my family and I would deeply appreciate respect for our privacy.”

Jobs, who is a pancreatic cancer survivor, has a history of medical problems and took a 6-month leave of absence in 2009, during which time he had a liver transplant.

The tech luminary is revered by Apple fans as a design-minded leader.

His health has triggered all sorts of questions in the tech sector, such as whether Apple will be able to produce innovative products without him, and how his health will affect Apple’s stock.

Apple, the world’s largest tech company and maker of the popular iPhone and iPad, is set to release an earnings report on Tuesday.

View List Of All Installed Apps From App Store, Cydia, System On iPhone [Cydia App]

If you want to keep a track of what all apps are installed on your iPhone or iPad, their version, size, and other information, then here is a free Cydia app AppInfo. Though not exactly perfect in working (does not support iOS multitasking), AppInfo does give you essential information for all the apps that are currently installed on your iDevice.

Search for ‘AppInfo’ in Cydia and install the app.

Launch ‘AppInfo’ from the icon on your Homescreen.

You can find a list of all installed apps under 3 different tabs – AppStore, Cydia, and System. Select an app to find out it’s details and calculate it’s size.

Tapping on ‘Open in Cydia’ did not work as expected. Hopefully the next release will bring in the bug fixes.

In case of App Store apps, you get to know a lot of information including it’s price, purchase date, the iTunes ID you used to buy the app, the section it belongs to in the App Store, and so on. Tap on ‘Open in AppStore’ to view the app in App Store on your iPhone.

If you nave iFile installed on your iPhone or iPod Touch, then you can open the selected apps’ folder in it by tapping ‘Open in iFile’. AppInfo is available for free download from the BigBoss repository of Cydia.

iOS 4.3 Heading For More Powerful GPUs

iOS 4.3 is one of the hottest topic today and people are just going deep and deep day by day trying to discover the secrets in it. One of the new discoveries includes a new driver for Imagination Technologies’ POWERVR SGX543 GPU. Apple’s iOS devices have leveraged the POWERVR SGX535 graphics processor. MacRumors summarizes the benefits of the SGX543 over the SGX535:

“The SGX543 is said to deliver performance of 35 million polygons per second and a filtrate of 1 billion pixels per second when running at 200 MHz, compared to 28 million polygons per second and a filtrate of 500 million pixels for the SGX535 running at the same clock speed. In addition, the SGX543 offers support for the Apple-backed OpenCL specification that allows applications to harness untapped potential of both CPUs and GPUs for processing purposes. Finally, the SGX543 support multi-core configurations allowing for even greater performance.”

iOS 4.3 is giving rise to a lot of things and this new chip will most probably work with the upcoming chip by Apple for iPhone 5 and iPad 2. Let’s hope it doesn’t disappoint us in the end

iPad2 to launch on April 2 or 9?

With so much of tablet news going round the web sphere, more so after the Consumer Electronic Show got over, what seems a bit strange is the contribution to this news stream from a company as formidable as Apple Inc. For a company that can be credited to have sown the seeds of the tablet revolution in the first place with the immensely successful iPad, it indeed is ironical for Apple to be in the headlines off late with more of rumors than some concrete details.

And the target of the latest round of rumors is of course the next generation iPad, which this time is rumored to be hitting markets in the US on the 2nd or the 9th of April, which turn out to be in either the first or the second weekend of April. The current iPad too was launched on the 3rd of April and it too was a Saturday and all the tentative dates rings true with the usual Apple practice of refreshing their product line-up within a year.
Also, as it has been with the first generation iPad, it is the domestic consumers who will get to have a taste of the iPad 2 before the tablet sets sail for offshore destinations sometime around July. The other piece of information that has come to the fore points out that it is Apple via its online or brick and mortar stores that would be the exclusive access points of the the new iPad (6 months) before others like Walmart or Best Buy comes on to the scene.
Meanwhile, we also have a clearer picture of the present iPad successor that is yet to get a proper name though much of it has already ceased to be a secret any more. Like what seems to be an almost surety is that the new iPad will have built-in cameras both at the front and the rear along with an USB port, both of which were so famously missing in the current iPad. In fact, its really amazing the iPad in spite of these missing on its feature list have yet managed to sell in millions, this notwithstanding the best efforts of many a celebrity manufacturer to come up with a suitable alternative to the iPad. Surely they must be ruing the missed chance as the next iPad will have all that the first version did not have and consumers have always wanted.
Also, the next iPad is speculated to come sans the home button, the only button that had been the hallmark of iOS powered devices such as the iPhone and the iPad. Instead, what the new iPad will have is some form of a new multitouch gesture that would bring back the home screen as well as act to launch the app switcher. In fact, the new 4.3 beta version of the iOS that has only recently been released already rendered the home button all the more use less. This has led many to speculate the new iPad to sport a clean front end with no button upfront, versions of which are already believed to be undergoing tests in Apple facilities in California.
Further, there are also reports of Foxconn, the company that manufactures most iOS based devices for Apple is ramping up its production facilities so as to start producing the device en masse, which is slated to begin next month itself.

Apple iPad 2 Possible US Release Date Revealed

No doubt all the iOS faithful out there are waiting with bated breath for the release of the next generation Apple iPad, the Apple iPad 2 as it has become to be known as, and apparently word is out on when you can expect to pick up the new iOS device.

According to an article over on the Boy Genius Report by Zach Epstein, German blog MacNotes claims that “reliable sources” have informed them of two possible launch dates in April for the Apple iPad 2.

Those dates are, if true, either Saturday the 2nd of April or Saturday the 9th of April and apparently the Apple iPad 2 will be exclusive to the United States for several months before the iOS device ses any international release.

Furthermore apparently the Apple iPad 2 will only be available for purchase via Apple for the first 3 to 6 months after which Apple partners such as Best By and Walmart will be able to offer the tablet.

So if the report is true US customers will gain the Apple iPad 2 in April while the rest of the world waits between a quarter and a half a year before they can gain the next generation iPad, good for US customers but no so of international ones.

PwnageTool iOS 4.3 beta jailbreak released

Just one day after Apple released the iOS 4.3 beta to developers, there’s an (unofficial) version of PwnageTool that can jailbreak the new OS. The new PwnageTool is based on the Limera1n exploit that has been around for a while now.

As with any jailbreak, you should be careful to back up your phone before installing any custom firmware files. This version of PwnageTool will not preserve your baseband, which means that it will break any carrier unlocking you’ve already done. Basebands are notoriously hard to downgrade, and an “official” PwnageTool carrier unlock won’t be released til iOS 4.3 is out of beta, so use caution.

WARNING NOTE: (Advanced Users Only) This unofficial version of PwnageTool (with custom bundles) wont preserve your old baseband. If you rely on an unlock, stay away from this release. Proceed at your own risk only. We are not to be held responsible if you end up bricking your iPhone.

Follow the instructions below to jailbreak iPhone 4 on iOS 4.3 beta using PwnageTool:

Step 1: Download and install the latest version of iTunes.

Step 2: Now start iTunes and sync your iPhone with your PC or Mac so that it backs-up all your important data including settings, apps, music, contacts and photos.

Step 3: Download PwnageTool and iOS 4.3 beta for iPhone 4 (devs only). Move all these files to your desktop.

Step 4: Start PwnageTool in “Expert mode” and select your device:

Step 5: Browse for iOS 4.3 beta firmware for your device as shown in the screenshot below:

Step 6: Now select “Build” to start creating custom 4.3 firmware file:

Step 7: PwnageTool will now create the custom .ipsw file for your iPhone which will be jailbroken.

Step 8: Now follow the following steps to enter DFU mode:

Hold Power and Home buttons for 10 seconds
Now release the Power button but continue holding the Home button for 10 more seconds
You device should now be in DFU mode

Step 9: Start iTunes, click on your iOS device icon from the sidebar in iTunes. Now press and hold left “alt” (option) button on Mac, or Left “Shift” button if you are on Windows on the keyboard and then click on “Restore” (Not “Update” or “Check for Update”) button in the iTunes and then release this button.

This will make iTunes prompt you to select the location for your custom firmware 4.3 file. Select the required custom .ipsw file and click on “Open”.

Step 10: Now sit back and enjoy as iTunes does the rest for you. This will involve a series of automated steps. Be patient at this stage and don’t do anything silly. Just wait while iTunes installs the new firmware 4.3 on your iPhone. Your iOS device screen at this point will be showing a progress bar indicating installation progress. After the installation is done, your iPhone will restart automatically and you should now have a fully jailbroken iPhone 4 on iOS 4.3 beta.

Geohot Speaks Out About Sony’s Lawsuit Over PS3 Jailbreak [Video]

Geohot appeared live on AOTS (Attack of the Show) today where he talked about the lawsuit which Sony recently filed against him for jailbreaking the PS3.
He made it very clear that his jailbreak (which is by the way still available on geohot.com) doesn’t enable piracy. All it does is to allow anyone to run unsigned homebrew apps for the first time on their systems (i.e. PlayStation 3). When asked “what exactly the issue is, what are you being sued for here?”. He confidently said, for “making Sony mad”.

Check out the whole (five-minute) interview in the video embedded below. It’s worth a watch!

Top 5 Discoveries In Apple’s iOS 4.3 Beta

Apple isn’t wasting any time getting to work this January after bringing the iPhone to Verizon earlier this week. The company released the first beta version of iOS 4.3 for iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch and Apple TV on Wednesday night. The new version of iOS promises all kinds of new features such as AirPlay support for third-party applications, four- and five-finger multitouch gestures and the return of the iPad’s screen orientation lock switch.

But that’s not all. Developers and bloggers have been hard at work overnight teasing out all kinds of new features and digging up fresh rumors about iOS 4.3. The new iOS hints at new iPads and iPhones, the end of the iPhone 3G, a mobile hotspot feature for all and the end of the home button. Here’s a look at the top five rumors, guesses and speculation surrounding iOS 4.3 Beta. New iToys Deep in iOS 4.3 beta’s code are purported references to two new iPhone models and three new iPads, according to Engadget. That’s five new iToys for 2011, although we’re most likely talking about two new devices. The gadget blog posits, and I’d have to concur, that these are most likely references to GSM and CDMA versions of a new iPhone, as well as CDMA, GSM and Wi-Fi only versions of a new iPad. Goodbye iPhone 3G? The next iOS release appears to dump software updates for the iPhone 3G and the second-generation iPod Touch, according to MacStories. Apple’s Developer site typically lists different beta versions of iOS that are specific to each iOS device. The lists currently in Apple’s developer center for iOS 4.3 leave both the iPhone 3G and the older iPod Touch out. This is not that surprising since AT&T dropped sales of the iPhone 3G once the iPhone 4 was released. Apple also dumped software support for the original iPhone with the iOS 4 release in June. If the iPhone 3G is getting cut now, how soon until iPhone 3GS owners are cut out of iOS updates?

Death To The Home Button?

Apple appears to have reignited its war on physical buttons in iOS 4.3. The company will reportedly do away with the home button on the iPad in favor of four- and five-finger multitouch gestures, according to Boy Genius Report. The new multi-finger gestures are included in iOS 4.3 as a preview so it’s unclear if they will make it into the final version of iOS 4.3.

The new gestures let you swipe up to see the multitasking bar, swipe left or right to switch between open apps and pinch to go back to the home screen.

There’s no word on whether the home button’s wake function will be replaced by a gesture or if you’ll have to rely exclusively on the iPad’s sleep/wake button at the top of the device. Personally, I’m hoping for a knock-to-wake gesture.

It’s not clear if the so-called iPad 2 expected in 2011 would lose its home button or if the rumored home button drop is planned for a later iteration of Apple’s tablet. Although BGR says both the iPad and maybe even the iPhone could lose their home buttons this year.

Hardware Rotation Lock

If you were sad to see the iPad’s screen orientation lock switch become a mute button in iOS 4.2, it looks like your prayers for the return of the screen lock have been answered. The Settings application in iOS 4.3 has an option to make your iPad’s side switch a mute button or a screen orientation lock, according to MacStories.

Hot Hotspot

The mobile hotspot option that debuted in Verizon’s CDMA-based iPhone is coming to all iPhone users with iOS 4.3, according to BGR. The feature allows up to five devices at once to use your iPhone’s 3G Internet access. But this new feature will probably be added at your carrier’s discretion, which means AT&T iPhone users may be left out in the cold.

One thing that hasn’t appeared in iOS 4.3 beta, or remains undiscovered, was any mention of an in-app subscription model for newspapers and magazines. We’ll have to see if that feature shows up in a later beta of iOS 4.3.

UPDATE: 9-to-5 Mac made another discovery in iOS 4.3 that appears to be references to the next iPad’s highly rumored front- and rear-facing cameras. The gadget blog found four files referencing the camera, and images of what the camera shutter effect will look like on the iPad screen. The images were 1024-by-768, which suggests the next iPad may have the same resolution display as the current model.

Next-gen iPad and iPhone could lose the home button

Apple’s obsession with removing physical buttons could continue. BGR is reporting that it’s received an exclusive tip from one of its trusted Apple insiders that the Cupertino-based company is testing next-gen iPads and iPhones that do not have home buttons.

Think of it like how the original Palm Pre lost its trackball when the Palm Pre 2 came out. Instead, multi-finger gestures could replace the home button entirely, as evidenced in last night’s iOS 4.3 beta software update. The iOS 4.3 beta release brought five-finger pinching to go back the home screen and four-finger swiping to the left and right to switch apps.

From what we noticed, iOS 4.3 beta’s new iPad update is much more intuitive, seeing as how double-clicking, and long holding the iPad’s home button to trigger actions becomes tedious after a while. The iPhone 4 hasn’t received any update for gestures, but that could just be a hardware limitation or Apple could be waiting to release gestures as a separate update after the next-gen iPhone comes out.

Regardless, Apple can streamline its hardware however it wants, as long as it doesn’t make things more complicated, customers will be happy. Besides, removing the home button is naturally the next step for Apple — when the hell are we getting touch-sensitive bezels on iOS devices hmm?

What iOS 4.3, And Specifically The New Multi-Touch Gestures, May Say About iPad 2

If there’s one thing that came out of CES this year, it’s that everyone, and I do mean everyone, wants a piece of the action that Apple absolutely dominates with the iPad right now. Tablets, tablets, tablet, tablets. We’ll see dozens upon dozens of them released this year. So how will Apple meet the onslaught? With the iOS 4.3 beta that just got pushed to developers today, it looks like we may have a first glimpse of the answer. One that may also point to the big answer: iPad 2.

As Macstories points out, a part of the iOS 4.3 beta looks to be new gesture support for the iPad. As they write:

It looks like iOS 4.3 has some cool new gestures built specifically for the iPad. 4 & 5 finger gestures; pinch to the home screen, swipe up to reveal multitasking tray, swipe left/right to switch apps.

Engadget snagged a picture of the settings for this.

Simply put: for hardcore iPad users, this is excellent news. It means that multitasking on the device will get a huge kick in the pants. What used to take a few somewhat tedious button clicks and touches of the screen can now be doing via swiping with the correct finger orientation.

Apple has a history of releasing multi-touch touch products with limited support for gestures, then adding new ones. This was the case with the original multi-touch trackpads, which gained new gestures over time. Now they’re doing it with the iPad as well.

But what’s really interesting about this is the timing.

Why is Apple including these features in iOS 4.3 rather than waiting for iOS 5, which will presumably come later this year when Apple unveils a new iPhone? Perhaps it means that iOS 4.3 will be the software that the iPad 2 launches with. It’s pure speculation, but maybe Apple decided that they wanted to have just a few nifty new software features (such as gestures and the mute/orientation lock option) for the new iPad launch, but will put most of the focus on the new hardware at launch.

Maybe the iPad 2 unveiling will also serve as a iOS 5 roadmap, which Apple has done in the past as its own event, outlining what’s coming in the next iteration of the OS so developers can get ready. Perhaps Apple doesn’t need developers to get ready for these gestures because it seems as if they’ll be system level. As in, third-party developers probably won’t have access to the four and five finger multi-touch options so that Apple can ensure they work in the same way for the new level of multitasking.

It took Apple quite a bit of time to unify iOS across the iPhone/iPod touch and the iPad. So you have to believe they don’t want to fragment it again. So maybe the timeline is this:

iOS 4.2.5 will launch alongside the Verizon iPhone on February 3.
Then in February/March, we’ll see the iPad 2 launch with iOS 4.3 for all iOS devices. At that time, we’ll get an outline of what’s to come in iOS 5.
And iOS 5 will launch in June for all supported iOS devices alongside the iPhone 5.

iOS 4.3 to Bring Personal Hotspot Feature to All iPhones?

BGR reports that, according to their source, iOS 4.3 will bring personal Hotspot feature to all iPhones in March, subject to the approval of individual carriers. If true, iOS 4.3 will support personal Hotspot out of the box, but it’s upto the carriers like AT&T to enable support for it.

Verizon iPhone 4, which is running a new iOS 4.2.5, comes with the support for turning the device into a personal Wi-Fi hotspot allowing up to five Wi-Fi devices to share the iPhone’s cellular data connection.
BGR also reports iOS 4.3 build version will be 8F5148b, baseband will be 04.08.00 and technical acceptance is planned for March.
