How to Downgrade iOS 4.3.1 to 4.3, 4.2.1, 4.x

Download your desired firmware for which you’ve SHSH blobs saved and want to downgrade to:

Method 1: Using TinyUmbrella

Download TinyUmbrella

If you’ve SHSH blobs saved on Saurik’s server via Cydia, download them into your computer first. To do that:

Connect your device, Fire up the TinyUmbrella and Check mark the Advanced Options.
Select your device and hit the save SHSH button. that’s it.

Step 1 – DFU Mode

Put your iPhone into DFU Mode (How to: enter DFU Mode)

Step 2 – Start TSS Server

Run the TinyUmbrella
select your device from the left pane and make sure that downloaded SHSH blobs has been cached (right pane) by TinyUmbrella for iOS 4.3, 4.2.1, 4.1 or older.
Now hit the Start TSS Server button.

Step 3 – Restoring The Firmware

Open the iTunes
Hold down the Shift (Windows)/Alt (Mac) key and hit the Restore button.
Select the downloaded firmware (iOS 4.3, iOS 4.2.1, iOS 4.1 or older) and let the restore process complete.
iTunes should bring up the error 1015, 1013 or 1011 message. Don’t worry, it’s normal. You’ve successfully downgraded your iPhone/iPod Touch Firmware.

Step 4 – Getting Out Of Recovery

Now in order to get out of recovery mode, hit the “Kick Device Out of Recovery” button on TinyUmbrella right below the Start TSS Server button or you can also use RecBoot. That’s it!

Save SHSH Blobs for iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch with TinyUmbrella (Windows, Mac)

Using TinyUmbrella you can save SHSH blobs for iPhone 4, 3GS, 3G, iPad, iPod Touch 4G, 3G, 2G and AppleTV 2g. In this guide you’ll learn how to save SHSH blobs for iOS 4.x, 3.1.x firmware with TinyUmbrella in both Windows and Mac OS X.

What Is TinyUmbrella?

TinyUmbrella is a unified version of Firmware Umbrella and TinyTSS. For more details,

Firmware Umbrella

When you try to restore an older firmware on the devices listed below, Apple won’t let you do that. Once you ‘upgrade’ they don’t let you downgrade. The way they stop you is basically by a simple response that iTunes receives when you try to restore the firmware of your choosing. See, the firmware is now signed for the below devices. It is signed with a unique id (ECID) that only your device has. Apple takes the firmware version files and combines them with your ECID and generates a hash that ONLY APPLE can generate. iTunes packages up this valuable information and sends it to your device. Your device checks the information and verifies the signature (making sure it really came from Apple because it CANNOT be forged as the encryption is very high). If the signature matches then the restore process can continue. If the signature does not match, the device raises an error and the restore process stops. Apple stops signing older firmwares once a new one is out.

Download TinyUmbrella

Download TinyUmbrella 4.30.00
(Supports iOS 4.3.1)

  • Windows [Mirror 1] [Mirror 2]
  • Mac OSX [Mirror 1] [Mirror 2]
  • Linux OS [Mirror 1] [Mirror 2]

What Is An SHSH Blob?

An SHSH is a secure signature hash. Basically its a unique key. (To avoid a lengthy discussion).

Why To Save SHSH Blobs?
Apple only allows you to restore to the firmwares they ‘sign’. This ‘signing’ only lasts for a limited time. Once they stop ‘signing’ the SHSHs for a firmware, there is no way to restore that firmware ever again. The core purpose of saving SHSH blobs is to secure future jailbreak. If you want to downgrade back to and older iOS 4.x, you will need your SHSH blobs saved either on Cydia or in your computer via TinyUmbrella.
Cydia can save SHSH blobs automatically (If you have ever tapped the “Make My Life Easier!”), it is recommended to use TinyUmbrella to ensure that you have SHSH blobs on file both on Cydia and on your Computer.

Note

  • TinyUmbrella can save SHSH blobs regardless of jailbreak.
  • You can save SHSH blobs for any latest firmware even if you’re on an older.
  • It does not matter what firmware version is on the device TinyUmbrella will get the currently signed firmware + all blobs saved at CYDIA Server (if any) by default.
  • iPhone 2G and iPod Touch 1G users do NOT need to save SHSH blobs.
  • iPhone 3G, and iPod Touch 2G (MC) users need SHSH blobs for iOS 4.x/newer only. SHSH does NOT apply to iOS 3.x for these devices

Follow the Steps mentioned below to save SHSH blobs of iOS 4.x, 3.x firmware for iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G, iPod Touch 3G and iPod Touch 2G (MC).

How to Save SHSH Blobs for iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch

  • DOWNLOAD TINYUMBRELLA

Step 1

Run the TinyUmbrella.

(Mac users: Copy the app to your desktop or you’ll get repeating password prompts if you ran the app from within the DMG).

Step 2

Now Connect your iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS3G, iPod Touch 4G, 3G 2G, iPad or Apple TV 2G to your computer. TinyUmbrella will detect your iDevice.

Step 3

  • Make Sure iTunes is closed
  • Now Simply Hit the Save SHSH button at Top-Right side of the window.

TinyUmbrella will save SHSH blobs of the latest firmware + all those blobs that you had saved for older firmwares (if any) on Cydia server. This will also generate a ticket to save SHSH blobs for the latest firmware to Cydia server.

All Done! You have secured your future jailbreak by saving SHSH blobs for iOS 4.x using TinyUmbrella. You can find the saved SHSH file directory under advanced Tab on TinyUmbrella and Cydia will also display your Saved SHSH blobs/status pending.

Troubleshooting

MAC ONLY: When I try running TinyUmbrella it crashes, in console.app it shows an error 255. How can I fix that?

A: This is a permissions issue. Run the following from Terminal:

  • sudo chown -R $USER ~
  • sudo chmod -R u+rw ~

And then after that reinstall TinyUmbrella. This should solve the issue.

GUIDE: How to prevent iTunes update your iPhone to 4.3 iOS

In this article we have warned all interested users to jailbreak your iPhone andall’Unlock, informing them that, currently, there are tools and programs that canperform these two operations on the new firmware 4.3. Therefore, for this type ofusers, it is very important not to upgrade software. To be sure to avoid any problem inthis way, you can follow this tutorial.

There are two steps: the first involves the installation of a tweak via Cydia, and therefore requires a jailbroken iPhone, the second, however, can be performed on the original terminals. Let’s see how to proceed.

RecoveryGuard | Cydia

RecoveryGuard is a tweak that is able to prevent the entry iOS automatic device in Recovery Mode, thus avoiding accidental restore or upgrade the terminal. Todownload it you must add the following repo in Cydia: http://cydia.pushfix.info

Once installed RecoveryGuard, if we try to restore / upgrade your iPhone, iTunes, wenow return a message that will be indicated as the latest available version of thefirmware that was installed on our own devices. This tweak does not inhibit, however, entry into DFU Mode option that you can then use to restore your device when you need it.

Uninstalling the RecoveryGuard instead will return to the normal behavior of iTunesin recovery mode and the input of the device.

Manual procedure
Here we have the manual procedure that acts directly on iTunes and can be followedby all users:

Make sure you have iTunes installed 10.2 or 10.2.1;
Open the Terminal with iTunes closed and then type:
defaults write personalized com.apple.iTunes-installation-server-host / dev / null

If you decide you want to upgrade, you should follow these steps to undo the changeand restore normal functioning of iTunes:

Make sure you have iTunes installed 10.2 or 10.2.1;
Open the Terminal with iTunes closed and then type:
defaults delete com.apple.iTunes personalized-installation-server-host

For maximum safety we recommend following both procedures.

iPhone 5 Leaked Parts Shows 4-inch Display, Thinner Bezel

According to the report, iPhone 5 will feature a 4 inch display. Later in that week, we presented you with a mockup of iPhone with a 4 inch display in same encasement. Quite honestly, that was one of the ugliest products Apple may ever produce and that is what led to the debate if Apple will be using the same encasement or larger.

A Chinese reseller of Apple’s parts has recently published an image of the digitizer panel of what it appears to be 5th generation iPhone’s. The part looks similar to that of iPhone 4 but with a larger cut for display to support 4 inch screen. If the leak is authentic, this may mean Apple is looking forward to fit the screen in the same encasement and your iPhones are probably going to look like this (I am not going to buy one if it does).

Reports also suggest that Apple has invested about $4B in some technological development which we are speculating to be in display technology to feature a larger screen on same encasement by getting the display to the edge of the phone. My only wish is they make it look lesser ugly than it does in the mock up.

Unlocked Verizon iPhone works on Chinese CDMA carrier, is Sprint next?

Can the Verizon iPhone be unlocked? That has been a huge point of curiosity since Big Red first announced the device. CDMA handsets do not use external, swappable SIM cards, so being able to unlock it and pop in another carrier’s SIM would be out of the question. But despite seeming kind of tricky, in theory, it still should’ve been possible.

Well now, it looks like we may have a definitive answer: Chinese carrier China Telecom claims that it has unlocked the Verizon iPhone and successfully got it to run on its CDMA network.

Considering this model is packing a world-mode chip capable of working on GSM as well as CDMA networks, we’re beginning to wonder if there will be any network the iPhone won’t work on. Unfortunately, there’s still that issue of no SIM card tray — at least in this version. But who knows? The iPhone 5 could be a game changer. And if so, you know the iPhone Dev-Team will be all over it.

In the mean time, here’s another interesting scenario to ponder: Verizon isn’t the only CDMA carrier in the U.S., right? Are we on the precipice of seeing jailbroken and unlocked iPhones running on Sprint now? Show of hands (comments): How many of you would jump at the chance to rock the 4 on the other CDMA carrier? Let us know below.

Is it Possible to Unlock Verizon (CDMA) iPhone 4?

Verizon (CDMA) iPhone 4 has already been jailbroken on iOS 4.2.6 using GreenPois0n tool. What about unlock? Is it possible to unlock Verizon iPhone 4? Can we use Verizon iPhone 4 on Sprint network or on any other CDMA operator? Can Verizon iPhone 4 work on GSM networks as well like AT&T iPhone 4? Well, it’s hard to answer all of these questions. We’ll just discuss the options below.

Can it work on GSM network?
The answer is “No”. Verizon iPhone 4 is powered by Qualcomm MDM6600 chip which supports both GSM and CDMA but Verizon iPhone will only work on CDMA only due to lack of SIM slot. Apple didn’t include SIM/GSM support.

Can it work on any CDMA network in US?

The answer to this question is “Yes” and “No”. Legally you can’t unlock CDMA iPhone 4 as it requires an “ESN/MEID” (Globally unique number identifying a CDMA mobile station equipment) from a donor phone in service and this is considered as a federal crime in US.

Let’s discuss the illegal options:

  1. Even if it’s unlocked, you will still need someone on Sprint network to activate it on their system which I can assure isn’t a piece of cake.
  2. Sprint offers the facility to upgrade to a free smartphone that supports 3G data. What you can do is that you take free phone’s ESN and put it in CDMA iPhone 4 by uncloking or any other means. This way when Sprint will activate that ESN, it won’t know it’s an iPhone 4, it will look like a Sprint smartphone on their side.

Can it work on any CDMA network outside US?

Well if it can work on any US CDMA carrier, it should be able to work on CDMA operators outside US as well. Having said that, it might not be that easy as there must be some adjustments that would be required on per carrier basis.

iPhone Hack Reveals Passwords in 6 Minutes [VIDEO]

A group of German researchers have been able to reveal stored passwords from a locked iPhone in under 1/10th of a minute, that without cracking the phone’s passcode.

The attack requires the phone to be in possession and hits the Apple’s password management system called “Keychain”. Keychain, first introduced in Mac OS 8.6, stores various type of passwords like FTP servers, SSH accounts, network shares, wireless networks and groupware applications along with private keys, certificates and secure notes.

The attack compromises the passwords for networks and corporate information systems by making use of the existing exploits that provide access to large parts of the iOS file system even for the locked device.

For the attack to be able to run, the phone has to be jailbroken with an SSH server installed. The attack script is then copied to the phone which uses the phone’s functions to retrieve information from Keychain and output it. This can be demonstrated in the video embedded below

Explaining the attack, the German researchers said:

The attack works because the cryptographic key on current iOS devices is based on material available within the device and is independent of the passcode

Even though the attack lets retrieve the passwords from Keychain, other protection classes are still safe from it.  Some of the passwords which were retrieved on the test are of Google Mail as an MS Exchange account, other MS Exchange accounts, LDAP accounts, voicemail, VPN passwords, WiFi passwords and some App passwords.

For now, since their is no fix to this, the owners of the lost iDevices should instantly change their passwords

Apple To Launch iOS 4.3 On February 14th, iPad 2 24 Hours Before?

It looks increasingly likely that Apple will launch the iPad 2 on the 13th of February with the iOS 4.3 coming one day later, which would correspond to the end of the day at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

Macstories quotes a reliable source to back the above statement adding that iOS 4.3 will be live by 1000 PST; iOS will improve support for AirPlay, clean up the existing code and introduce iTunes app subscriptions that will support The Daily and other third party APIs.
This obviously reminds us of what MacNotes, a German website, published last week; an anonymous iPad accessories manufacturer had said that Apple would be planning a small event to launch the iPad 2 and the iOS 4.3 at the same time.
Apple might time the release to occur on the 13th of February which is the Sunday before MWC. The iPad 2 is unlikely to go on sale before the end of April 2011 with the tablet hitting other territories in the se

White iPhone 4 Shows Up At AT&T, Orange UK And Three

Well well well, what do we have here? Boy Genius Report are, err, reporting that the fabled white iPhone is showing up in AT&T’s Online Account Management system.

If that wasn’t enough, it seems the same white handset is also showing up on the sites of both Orange UK and Three. Things are starting to get interesting!

No date for expected arrival is given, but this does open up the white iPhone rumors once again. BGR speculates a late February or early March release, which pushes us closer and closer to the iPhone 5.

Will Apple even bother with a white iPhone 4 at this point? Maybe the iPhone 5 will break from the usual 12 month release cycle?

As with all things Apple, time will indeed tell. Watch this space folks!
