Two men charged over woods attack

Detectives investigating how a woman was left abandoned and in a distressed state in woodland have charged a man and a teenage boy.

The 25-year-old and the 17-year-old have been charged in connection with attempted murder and kidnap.

They were arrested after the 27-year-old woman was found near Woodsome Hall Golf Club, Huddersfield, on Saturday night.

They will appear before Huddersfield Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

The 25-year-old man has also been charged with possession of a weapon for discharge of electrical incapacitant.

Another man, aged 49, and a 46-year-old woman are also being questioned on suspicion of attempted murder.

Police want to speak to anyone who saw a Vauxhall Astra car in the area.

West Yorkshire police believe the woman might have been taken from an address in Penistone Road, Huddersfield, after 2300 BST on Saturday.

The X Factor judging panel has been confirmed as three singers and a pop-music impresario.

Pop mogul Louis Walsh is joined by Take That’s Gary Barlow, singer Kelly Rowland and Tulisa Contostavlos of urban hip-hop band N-Dubz.

There was no return for Cheryl Cole, who was axed last week from the American version of the show.

Former judge Simon Cowell said: “These four are totally up for it, each of them bring a different attitude.”

Cowell added: “They have had a ton of hits between them and they are all committed to finding a star.

“I have a feeling Louis and Tulisa will have slightly different points of view as to what the next star should look and sound like.”

‘Fireworks’

Barlow said: “I’m extremely excited about working on The X Factor. I’ve always been a fan of the show and always enjoyed performing on it too.

“My one goal is to find a global superstar. If I don’t find one, I won’t have done my job.”

N-Dubz star Tulisa said she looked forward to bringing “something fresh” to the panel.

She added: “I’m not going to be afraid to speak my mind and mix things up a little.

“I can’t wait to meet the world’s next superstar”

Kelly Rowland X Factor judge

“I am hoping to find some hot new talent and mentor a winning category. It is also going to be great to get to know and work alongside the other judges. Let the fireworks begin.”

Rowland added that she was thrilled to be heading to one of her “favourite places in the world”.

She said: “The music coming out of the UK right now is incredible, with artists like Adele, Jessie J and James Blake, so I’m confident this season of The X Factor will give me opportunity to hear a few diamonds in the rough.

“Being a judge is never easy but I promise to be as sternly honest as I can and also encourage everyone who crosses the stage. I can’t wait to meet the world’s next superstar.”

Walsh said: “I’m delighted to be back for my eighth series of The X Factor, it’s my favourite job in the world and I’m really excited this year to work with Gary Barlow and the rest of the new panel.

“I’m the last original judge standing and I’m determined to find an act that can win this year and show the others how it’s done.”

The first audition will be in Birmingham on Wednesday, then on to Glasgow, Manchester, Cardiff, London and Liverpool.

At least six people have been injured by two explosions in the hometown of Nigeria’s Vice-President, Namadi Sambo, officials have said.

The blasts in the northern city of Zaria struck a bar on Sunday night and the old quarter on Monday morning.

There are also reports of an attack on a military patrol in Maiduguri.

At least 10 people were killed by a bombing at a market place in Bauchi on Sunday evening, hours after President Goodluck Jonathan’s inauguration.

No group has yet said it was behind the series of attacks.

The BBC’s Abdullahi Kaura Abubakar in Kaduna says the two bombings in nearby Zaria targeted a beer parlour in the government reservation and an old part of the city. Two children were injured in the latter attack.

Kaduna state police spokesman Aminu Lawal said the blasts were both caused by “locally-made explosive devices”.

“We have intensified security in the affected areas and we have deployed more patrol teams,” he told the AFP news agency.

On Sunday, three explosions at the Mamy market attached to the Shadawanka barracks in the city of Bauchi killed 14 people and injured 29 others, the chairman of the Bauchi state emergency operations team told the BBC.

The BBC’s Ishaq Khalid says that although the site has been cordoned off by security forces, he saw a great deal of devastation there.

The bombs were planted in three different locations in the popular market area, where traders sell food, drink and other goods to soldiers and civilians in the evening, our correspondent says.

Police said they were still investigating the explosions, and were not yet able to say who they believed were behind them. It was also not clear if they are connected to the blasts in Zaria and Maiduguri.

The Bauchi attack came only hours after President Jonathan was sworn in for his first full four-year term of office in the capital, Abuja.

Mr Jonathan was promoted from vice-president after northerner Umaru Yar’Adua died in office in 2010.

April’s election was largely considered free and fair, but hundreds of people were killed in three days of rioting and reprisal killings in northern towns following the announcement of the result.

Mr Jonathan secured nearly 60% of the vote in the election. His main challenger, northern Muslim and former military ruler Muhammadu Buhari, came a distant second with almost 32%.

Analysts say that Mr Jonathan will have to tackle the Christian-Muslim conflict and also the simmering tension in the oil-producing Niger Delta.

Yemen forces ‘kill 20 protesters’

Injured protester in Taiz. 29 May 2011Yemeni troops moved in to sweep the protest camp from the centre of Taiz, witnesses say

Security forces in Yemen have shot dead at least 20 anti-government protesters in the southern city of Taiz, medics and organisers say.

Soldiers reportedly moved in to end a four-month-old sit-in in the city.

Meanwhile, four Yemeni soldiers have been killed in an apparent ambush near the city of Zinjibar, reportedly held by al-Qaeda fighters, officials say.

President Ali Abdullah Saleh refuses to step down despite months of protests and strong opposition from a key tribe.

A protest organiser told AFP that security forces backed by army and Republican Guard troops drove the demonstrators out of Freedom Square in the city centre.

“At least 20 protesters have been killed,” the organiser said.

Earlier reports quoting witnesses and doctors said security forces attacked protesters with rifles and water cannon and set fire to their camp.

Sadek al-Shugaa, head of a field hospital at the protest camp, was quoted by AP news agency as saying soldiers fired into the crowds indiscriminately.

In Zinjibar, security officials said the soldiers died when their convoy came under attack.

“A convoy of reinforcements fell in an ambush by al-Qaeda elements 1km from Zinjibar. Four soldiers, including a colonel, were killed and a number of others were wounded,” the security official said.

Government reports from Zinjibar suggested the town had been seized some days ago by gunmen from al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP).

A battle has reportedly been going on since as forces loyal to President Saleh try to take it back.

However, there are conflicting accounts of the loyalties of the armed men.

The government has blamed previous attacks in southern Yemen on al-Qaeda, but the country’s opposition has accused President Saleh of stoking fears of an Islamist takeover.

The opposition coalition Common Forum said Mr Saleh had “delivered Zinjibar to groups that he has formed and armed, to continue to utilise the spectre of al-Qaeda to frighten regional and international parties”.

On Sunday, President Saleh and the country’s most powerful tribal leader agreed a ceasefire after five days of fighting in the capital Sanaa, a mediator said.

More than 100 people have died in clashes between forces loyal to Hashid leader Sheikh Sadiq al-Ahmar and President Saleh.

The fighting had threatened to push Yemen into civil war.

Swansea fans’ exodus to Wembley

Swansea City fans celebrate after clinching a Wembley spotSwansea City fans celebrate after clinching a Wembley spot

More than 40,000 Swansea City fans are heading to Wembley hoping to see the club promoted to the Premier League.

The Championship play-off final is one of the biggest games in the club’s history and a win against Reading could net the Swans up to £90m.

The Swans have never played in the Premier League, and have not featured in England’s top flight since 1983.

Most fans are travelling by road, with an estimated 200 coaches booked for the 1500 BST kick-off.

The match comes just nine years after the Swans almost went bust and eight years since they beat Hull City on the final day of the 2002/03 season to stay in the Football League.

“Emotions are changing a lot during the week, but looking back, the nerves are not as stressful as they were going back quite a while ago when we played Hull City,” said Swans chairman Huw Jenkins.

“Everyone wrote them off at the beginning of the season so let’s prove them all wrong ”

Boxer Enzo Maccarinelli

“The build up to that game and the pressure involved and the fact that we were involved in the club at that time were far, far greater than they are today.”

Supporters are travelling from all over the world to see the game including Canada, United States, Argentina, Trinidad, Russia, Germany, Holland, Thailand and New Zealand.

One fan Garry George, is making a three-day trip, from Australia.

“People obviously think I am a little bit mad, especially with the short turnaround and immediate return to work,” he said.

The Swans received an initial allocation of 39,376 tickets for the final but were given extra after selling out in less than a week to take the total over 40,000.

Many fans are travelling up by road and should make it hassle-free as there are no planned works on the M4 on Monday.

Those travelling by train and tube have been warned they risk missing the match if they are caught taking alcohol on board as they face being removed from services.

“We want everyone travelling to and from the match to enjoy themselves,” said British Transport Police’s sector commander for Wales, Ch Insp Sandra England.

“But we know from experience that some fans can get caught up in the excitement of the day, and this, combined with alcohol, can result in some less-than-desirable behaviour.

“We’re asking fans to show some consideration for others on board the train and to moderate their language and behaviour – but above all to enjoy the day.”

One fan who cannot make it though is Hollywood star Catherine Zeta Jones, who is originally from Swansea.

“Coming from a family of Swans fans from such a young age I wait with baited breath for the playoff final in Wembley,” she said.

“I vividly remember the Swans when they were last playing top flight football in the early 1980s and loved every minute of it.

“My thoughts are with all the players and fans for this memorable day. Come on you Swans, let’s do it again.”

Swansea boxer Enzo Maccarinelli also sent a good luck message.

“The whole town is behind them,” said the former WBO world cruiserweight champion.

“Everyone wrote them off at the beginning of the season so let’s prove them all wrong and get them into the Premier League.”

Rugby side the Ospreys have thrown their support behind their Liberty Stadium colleagues.

“They have earned their place in the final with some outstanding performances this season, and deserve their place at Wembley,” said Ospreys managing director Roger Blyth.

Swansea City team coach sets off

Swansea City’s players were given a send-off by fans on Saturday

“Swansea is a sports-mad city, and to have Premier League football and Wales’ leading rugby region playing out of the Liberty Stadium will be something wonderful that all sports-mad people in the region will be able to gain great satisfaction from.

In Swansea, there are no planned events for match day, although supporters will be hoping for some kind of celebration should the Swans go up.

“The Swans have already done superbly well but promotion to the Premier League would be an enormous achievement,” said Swansea council leader Chris Holley.

“It’s a league that’s watched by many millions of people throughout the world and means thousands of fans from across the UK and beyond would be coming to Swansea for the first time.

“It’d represent a wonderful marketing opportunity for Swansea Bay as a destination and would boost traders and accommodation providers across the area.

“Football is generating a magnificent feel-good factor across the city at the moment.”

Bafta race row stylist apologises

James BrownMr Brown was photographed arriving at the ill-fated bash on 22 May

A celebrity hairdresser has admitted using racially insulting language at the Bafta awards, blaming his “out of control” drinking.

The abuse came to light when TV presenter Ben Douglas revealed he had been addressed using a racist word eight times at the London ceremony.

Mr Douglas had refused to name the man responsible.

But James Brown, who has a line of hair care products at Boots, has now confessed.

Mr Brown’s spokesman, former newspaper editor Stuart Higgins, released a statement on his behalf which said: “I’d like to make a public apology to Mr Douglas, to his friends and to Bafta for my offensive and stupid comments.

“The simple truth is that I had drunk far too much on the evening and my behaviour was totally unacceptable.

“Everyone who knows me knows I am not racist in any way whatsoever, but this incident has shown me that my drinking is way out of control and I need to take urgent measures to deal with it.”

The statement continued: “I have been in touch with Mr Douglas and will be writing to him and to the Bafta organisers to apologise personally.

“I am very sorry and very embarrassed.”

A Bafta spokesman said: “We were unaware of the incident until we read the newspaper story yesterday.

“Neither party has contacted Bafta directly about the matter but we will be investigating it further.”

Lagarde in IMF charm offensive

Christine Lagarde is planning to visit China, India and Brazil to drum up support for her bid to head the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

The French finance minister said she wanted to visit the three countries in an effort to ease concerns over her candidacy.

Emerging economies have voiced their concerns over the continuing hold of European nations over the IMF.

All 10 of the fund’s managing directors since its inception have been European.

Leaders of developing economies have voiced their displeasure, saying that the head of a global body should be chosen purely on merit.

India’s prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh was quoted as saying “We would like to remind the industrialised world that there is a tacit agreement that the top positions in international financial institutions must not go to specific countries as a matter of right,” according to a transcript of comments issued by the Foreign Ministry.

“You do recognise that those who exercise power, they don’t want to give up power and therefore the struggle for a better, balanced world order, a more equitable world order… is going to be a long haul”

Dr Manmohan Singh Indian prime minister

The balance of global financial power has changed drastically in the past few years.

Economies like China and India have grown at a much faster pace that those in the developed world, making them increasingly important players on the world stage.

However their influence at global bodies like the IMF has not altered much during the same period.

And India’s prime minister Dr Singh said it will take a long time for that change to happen.

“You do recognise that those who exercise power, they don’t want to give up power and therefore the struggle for a better, balanced world order, a more equitable world order, including the management of global institutions like the IMF, World Bank, Security Council… it is going to be a long haul, I am afraid,” he said.

His views were echoed by Professor Charles Adams of the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy in Singapore, who said that though the IMF had been moving in the right direction, the pace had been too slow.

“We have seen some changes in the IMF away from the European and major advanced economies to the emerging market economies, but it has been slow, at times painful,” he said.

“It does not yet reflect the economic reality,” he added.

The French foreign minister Alain Juppe said that Ms Lagarde had received the backing of the leaders of the Group of Eight Nations (G8) of developed economies.

“Among the eight heads of state and government, plus the president of the European Commission and the president of the European Council who were there (at the G8 meeting in Deauville, France), there was unanimous support for Christine Lagarde,” Mr Juppe was quoted as saying by the Reuters news agency.

The Group of Eight Nations represents some of the biggest and most powerful economies in the world.

Its members are the US, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Canada and Russia.

Bangladesh woman cuts off penis

Monju BegumMonju Begum says her neighbour had been harassing her for months

Police in southern Bangladesh say a woman cut off a man’s penis during an alleged attempt to rape her and took it to a police station as evidence.

The incident took place in Mirzapur village, Jhalakathi, about 200km (124 miles) south of the capital, Dhaka.

Monju Begum, 40, a married mother of three, told police that neighbour Mozammel Haq Mazi forced his way into her shanty and started assaulting her.

Mr Mazi, who denies the accusation, has been admitted to a nearby hospital.

“We will arrest him once his condition gets better,” police spokesman Abul Khaer told the BBC.

“She said she fought back and cut off his penis and brought it to our police station in a polythene bag to prove that Mr Mazi tried to rape her,” police spokesman Abul Khaer told the BBC.

“She has registered a case accusing him of attempted rape,” he said.

“It is quite an unusual incident. As far as I am aware, this is the first time that a woman has brought a severed penis to the police station as evidence.”

Monju Begum had previously complained to the police that Mr Mazi, a married father of five, had been harassing her for the past six months.

But Mr Mazi denied the allegations.

“We were having an affair and recently she suggested that both of us can go and settle down in Dhaka,” Mr Mazi told the BBC from the hospital in nearby Barisal.

“I refused and told her that I cannot leave my wife and children, so she took revenge on me.”

Prof AMSM Sharfuzzaman, a senior surgeon at the Sher-e-Bangla Medical College and Hospital in Barisal town, told the BBC it had not been possible to reattach the organ.

“Police brought his severed penis several hours after the incident,” he said.

“We are treating him so that he can urinate normally without the penis.”
