Although the title might seem cryptic, this orchestral rock track lives up to its billing by offering both a simple, anthemic melody, as well as a churning orchestration that’s complex in instrumentation and effects. Imagine the stillness of a babbling brook, the beauty of nature: that’s the verse. Now imagine the grandeur and sheer power of nature you find in Niagra Falls: that’s the chorus. To put it in strictly musical terms, at the beginning of the track, authentic acoustic guitar fingerpicking and swooping synths accompany a simple piano melody in the verse, which swells into a full-on orchestral rock/pop chorus complete with acoustic drums, distorted electric rhythm guitar and electric lead guitar. At the end of the chorus we’re returned to the stillness of the opening scene, to see just how far we’ve come.

ALthough this track is orchestral and cinematic, it also features a traditional drum set playing a contemporary beat in a half-time groove. Don’t let the words “half-time” fool you, though, this track is driving and moves with purpose. This track defies easy description, so if these words don’t give you enough of a picture, just listen for youself. For now, envision a kingdom from an earlier time, but instead of your typical “ye olde kingdom” kind of music, imagine a unique, slightly offbeat one. The track starts out with a pulsating accordian in solo, followed by a piano, supporting pad, and then the drums and orchestra kick in, and the full weight of the violins, violas, cellos, and double basses carries us through the chorus, bridge, and beyond.

It’s big and bombastic from the word “go” in this dramatic, orchestral action/adventure track. The whole string section is sawing away nearly the whole time, from the double basses all the way up to the violins. French horns and trombones play the melody at first, with the strings and winds in countermelody, and then they switch roles, giving the music direction and momentum. Along with the driving nature of the horns and high strings, a syncopation is built into the bass line (double basses and cellos) which provides accents that, along with some epic drum sounds, might just make your pulse quicken a bit! “The Conquering Hero” is not for the faint of heart!
