Aplication – Forum Section Crawler

I need an application to run in my computer, that goes to a forum section and grabs the title of each post, date, number of views and number of replies – for the entire forum section.. ALL the pages that forum section has (it doesn’t need to go inside every post.. just go through the pages and grab the titles/dates/number of views and number of replies of each post).

I need that application to let me define the interval (X hours, days, etc) when the application goes to the forum section and performs the “crawl”.

I also want a button to do it instantly when I click on it.

I need that application to let me define the forum section URL I want it to go and do the “crawl” so I can use it in multiple forums. Although I specify a single URL for the forum section , I need it do be able to go through all pages of that section, not just the URL I specify.

Please have in mind that the URL structure for different forums can be different, some can be like:

forum/forumdisplay.html?p=1
forum/forumdisplay.html?p=2
forum/forumdisplay.html?p=3 … etc

and others can be like:

forum/section/
forum/section/index1.html
forum /section/index2.html

( note that the URL structure for the first page of the forum section is usually different from the following pages ).

The application has to be able to handle all this.

That application then sends the collected titles of each post along with dates, number of views and number of replies to a webpage.

I need to be able to define the webpage I want the collected information to be sent to (the url), in the application that runs in my computer.

On that webpage I want to be able to organize that data.

I want to be able to select the interval of the collected data I want to organize (last X hours, last X days, last week, last month or all available data (the entire database).

On that webpage, I want an option where I can input a certain keyword like “forex” and it goes over all the titles (for the selected interval of time – last X days, last week, last month, all available data, etc) and only displays the titles that have “forex” in it.

This option has to be optional, not required to do the organization, I only use a keywords if I want to.

Then, I want an option to choose “most views” and it displays the titles with most views first and the ones with less views at the end.

I also want an option to choose “most replies” and it displays the titles with most replies first and the ones with less replies at the end.

These last 2 options are the main options, and they have to work when I specify a keyword (with the keyword option) as well.

I will own all the rights to the application.

I also want the source code.

If you have more questions, please let me know.

Android Fundamentals: Scheduling Recurring Tasks

Many applications have a need for regular, background actions to take place. For instance, in the “TutList” application we’ve been building over a recent series of tutorials, the content list is stale until the user initiates a refresh from the options menu. Why can’t the application simply update its data at regular intervals? Well, it […]

Weekly Poll: Ever Spilled Something on Your Mac?

Earlier this week, while chatting to someone on Skype, I reached forward and knocked a full cup of coffee straight over my Apple Wireless Keyboard. This wasn’t a minor spillage – the whole keyboard was completed drenched (I don’t do things by halves!)

As quickly as I could, I followed the advice so wisely imparted by a fellow Envato colleague. I took out the batteries, and tipped it upside down to let the liquid drain out.

Two days later and it seems that, unfortunately, the keyboard isn’t going to recover from its coffee encounter. None of the keys work (something of a problem…), and the only key that does work remains depressed constantly! Thankfully it wasn’t my actual MacBook, and the replacement cost isn’t all that bad.

Spilling something on your Mac is everyone’s absolute worst nightmare, but it happens to most of us at some point. Or does it? Maybe I’m more clumsy than most…

Have you ever spilled something on your Mac or keyboard? What was it, and did your machine recover? Let us know in the comments!

Firefox 4: Welcome Improvements & Helpful New Features

In the Mac browser wars, there are many contenders for the crown. But the big three are Chrome, Safari and Firefox. On my desktop, I found myself using Safari and Chrome more often than Firefox because Chrome looks better and I could ditch Flash on Safari easily.

But more importantly, Firefox was slow to load and didn’t offer anything better for me than Chrome or Safari, so why use it?

Now there’s a reason: Firefox 4 is out and it’s packed with new features that make it worth the download. So what are these fancy new bits that kick Firefox up a notch? Let’s take a look after the break.

For Starters

Let’s get this out of the way now. This isn’t going to be a technical review where we discuss how quick Firefox is, and post up benchmark tests of how it works. No, our mission here is to point out some of the cool new features about the browser, and we’ll leave the benchmarking to the other guys. With that out of the way, let’s move on.

The new look for Firefox 4 stands out from the rest.

The new look for Firefox 4 stands out from the rest.

The Big Stuff

The first really big thing that we noticed about Firefox has to do with the tabs, and for that, let’s use an example. Right now I’m writing this review in Firefox, in our fancy blogging web app. I also have a few other tabs open for research purposes and my Gmail account humming away.

Now, were I working in Chrome, I’d be bouncing around tabs and I could accidentally close one or two in the process. Firefox not only stops that from happening, but it does so in a cool way.

App tabs keep your apps locked in place.

App tabs keep your apps locked in place.

It’s called an App Tab, and it’s a way to pin your tabs to the side of the top bar. By pinning certain tabs in place — for my situation, Gmail and our blogging platform — I can’t accidentally hit command-w and close a tab as I do so often.

It also means that they’re always there, even when you close and reopen the program, which is even better if you’re working on a project but want to eliminate memory leaking. For me, this is the No. 1 reason I use Firefox more than I used to.

The preferences tab offers many different customization options.

The preferences tab offers many different customization options.

Grouping Tabs

Let’s travel back to the previous scenario. Say I have another window open entirely, with a whole other set of tabs in place. Maybe I’m researching for Mac.AppStorm in one window, and surfing the web on the other. Now, my problem is that I either have two windows open at one time, or I have one minimized and, of course, I’ll forget about one of them when I close the browser — and that would suck.

Group your tabs for easier navigation.

Group your tabs for easier navigation.

Firefox calls it Panorama, but you can call it tab grouping, if you prefer. This option lets you switch between windows easily by grouping your tabs in one place. Never lose track of a window again, because they’re all easily accessible. Very handy for a web junkie like myself.

Further Customization

A few other highlights stand out. First, there’s Firefox Sync, which lets you sync your bookmarks and tabs from your Mac to Firefox Home on your iPhone.

Setup a sync account to sync your browser on multiple devices.

Then there’s the look of the app itself. Like many browsers, the window is customizable. Remove the navigation bar, switch off the add-on bar at the bottom, or flip around where the tabs sit. Change it up to your preferences, and make it yours.

Change up your browser's looks easily.

And of course, there’s the veritable cornucopia of add-ons available at Mozilla’s website. There are a few thousand to choose from, so take your pick of extensions for whatever you want.

Add-ons make Firefox infinitely customizable.

Add-ons make Firefox infinitely customizable.

Final Thoughts

I like to break up my browsing duties depending on my tasks. For example, I used to use Chrome for all of my goofing off, because Flash is onboard all the time, and it’s fast. I used Safari for my blogging work, mostly because I added Click to Flash to stop Adobe from slowing down my browsing. Firefox just sat in my Applications folder, unused and neglected.

Now, I’ve switched from Safari to Firefox for all of my work needs. If I had to put my finger on why, it’s all down to the app tabs for me, because that’s improved my productivity ten fold.

I can’t tell you how many tabs I accidentally closed in my fervor to clean up my browser, and yes, I could just reopen them if need be, but it took time. Do that a few dozen times in a day and those precious seconds start to add up.

That said, it’s not perfect. It’s definitely not as slow as Safari, but it’s slower than Chrome for sure. Since it’s so new, many of the add-ons I already had on Firefox don’t work because they haven’t been updated yet. And it’s also crashed on me once or twice, although admittedly, pretty much every browser does that to me on occasion.

I do really dig Firefox 4, and I’ve recommended it to a few friends and colleagues since it was released. But it’s not Chrome, and right now that’s pretty high up on the quality list in my book. Out of the three browsers I use, I’d put it at a solid No. 2 — and with a few updates, it might just move up to No. 1.

I’d like to say a big thank you to this week’s AppStorm sponsor – Patterno. This unique app is a tiled pattern and background image generator for Mac OS X, and can be a huge time-saver for graphic designers everywhere.

BananaTunes beta streams beautiful music from iOS to your Mac

One of the great things about being a buddy of Erica Sadun is that sooner or later, she surprises you with an amazing app. [Ed: This is also known as “assault by beta testing” under Utah’s penal code.] Her BananaTunes beta evolves iOS-to-Mac video app BananaTV to the next logical step — it transmits full stereo music from your iOS device to your Mac.

Built around the recent AirPlay reverse engineering, Sadun promises that this capability will eventually be factored back into BananaTV, her iOS-to-Mac video app. For now BananaTunes allows you to bring your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad to the office or a friend’s house and use its built-in iPod app AirPlay functionality to stream music to a Mac running this software.

BananaTunes is currently available as a limited-time beta app so that Erica can work out bugs as time permits. It requires Mac OS X 10.6 and 64-bit, so be sure that you know what you’re running before you try out the Mac app.

When BananaTunes becomes part of BananaTV, users will need to bring their own key.pem file for authentication. Want to give it a spin? Either download these two zip files off of Erica’s site and follow the instructions, or use this all-in-one installer package. Word of mouth is that the installer package works great but our standard TUAW paranoia mandates that we warn you that we’ve been unable to authenticate its contents. (In other words, use at your own risk, but it’s probably just fine.)

In my limited beta testing today, I found that BananaTunes worked very well with my iPad 2. Tunes beamed from my iPhone 4 experienced some garbling. This could be due to network traffic, so be aware that your mileage may vary. Then again, it was a 1950s Dean Martin recording, so he may have been gargling Scotch while crooning the tune I was listening to.

In the end, BananaTunes is a fun Mac app for when you want to control your music world from your iPad.

Rumor: Next MacBook Pro to sport completely redesigned case

Get ready to say goodbye to the current form factor of the MacBook Pro family. MacRumors is reporting that the next MacBook Pros will sport an entirely redesigned case. A redesign next year isn’t such a surprise, as Apple does tend to redesign their laptops about every three years. However, the next MacBook Pro design, according to the rumors, could be the most significant to the line in years.

In February before the latest MacBook Pros were unveiled, iLounge stated that the 2011 MBPs would be the last to sport the current form factor and that next year’s MBPs were already under development at Quanta in Taiwan. The next MacBook Pros are reportedly a big “milestone” release for the Pro family. There’s no hard details yet on what the redesign will include, but given the popularity of the MacBook Air, it’s not a stretch to assume that Apple is going to eliminate the optical drive in hopes of making the MacBook Pro family as thin and light as possible.

Looking for Easter eggs in iOS and its apps

We’re one day late on this one, but rather than brightly colored hidden eggs for Easter, in this case we’re of course referring to “easter eggs,” little secrets that programmers hide in their applications and code. Macworld has a great roundup of four easter eggs hidden in popular App Store apps, from a secret edition of the 1926 Kelly Blue Book in the official Kelly app to the funny result you get when searching for “tilt” in Mobile Safari.

Off the top of my head, the only other app easter egg I know of is the fact that you can play with the various characters wandering around the title screen of Halfbrick’s Monster Dash. Yelp’s Monocle AR service was originally an easter egg, although it is now part of the full app.

And it’s not technically an easter egg, but some people may not know that you can access iTunes controls either by double clicking the home button while your iPhone is locked, or by double clicking it while unlocked to bring up the background app icons, and then swiping those to the right.

Any other hidden iOS features or app easter eggs that you know about? Share with the rest of us in the comments below!

Concept case would turn your iPhone into a Leica

OK, so yes, this Leica i9 case for the iPhone 4 is still just a concept. You can’t actually buy a case yet that fits around your iPhone and turns it into a Leica camera (though you can buy some nice lenses or an audio tape case). But this idea is just too cool to pass up. Outside of the standard retro charm of having a Leica attached to the back of your iPhone, the idea here is that you can use the iPhone’s dock port to attach a high-quality premium camera to the back of your high-quality premium smartphone, enabling some really excellent mobile photography.

There’s probably some technical magic that has to be worked here as well — I don’t know how feasible it is to have the dock hook up to and even control a high quality camera lens like this, especially with that design and size. But heck, if we can get the iCade made into a real product, this is certainly possible, right?
