Sis – Student Information System

I have been requested by a local school to provide them with a reasonably low-cost S.I.S. – Student Information System – (see
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Student_information_system).

The leading private and commercial SIS providers are:

Pearson: PowerSchool – http://www.pearsonschoolsystems.com/
SkyWard: http://www.skyward.com/
Edline: http://www.edline.com/

Others not as popular are:
MMS: http://www.cri-mms.com/
SchoolMaster: http://www.schoolmaster.com/
Aeries: http://www.aeries.com/aeries_overview.asp
Sunguard eschoolplus – http://www.sungardps.com/products/eschoolplus.aspx

The only problem with all of these is that they are very expensive and many schools are not able to pay the cost to use them.

There are a couple of free Open Source SIS softwares out there. They are free to use and allow personal customization to individual needs Only requirement is that the Open Source part be kept public and available for anyone else who wants to use. The customized part does not have to be shared (see http://www.opensource.org/licenses/ecl2.php).

A few samples of free Open Source SIS are:

OpenSIS: http://www.opensis.com/
Class: http://www.laex.org/class/
SchoolToo: http://www.schooltool.org/
Open Admin for Schools: http://richtech.ca/openadmin/index.html
FreeSMS: http://freesms.sourceforge.net/

There is also a brand new one in the market which I like very much and has both FREE and Commercial versions: Spiral Universe: http://www.spiraluniverse.com/

I need to find someone who has the experience or required knowledge to use one of the Free Open Source SIS options above and customize it so I can provide it to the local school that is requiring this from me. I would also want to be able to commercialize this new customized version as some of the above Open Source companies have done, so I will keep the rights to do so after the software is finished. It needs to have a nice presentation and be very friendly.

I would love if it can be designed following the style used by SPIRAL (http://www.spiraluniverse.com/product/overview.html), but if not then the second prefered feel and look style is that of OpenSIS (http://www.opensis.com/features.php). This second one is available for free.

Please review carefully each of the links included above, starting from the Wiki definition to the commercial samples and the free open-source samples, and then reply to this posting with the subject “Open Source SIS” if you feel you can provide me with a solution. That way I know you are not just answering at random every posting in scriptlance and that you know what this particular project needs.

Please do not over-cost this project as most of what I need is already available as an Open Source and I only need customization so I can offer it to my client.
