4 Artists You Should Know: Diversity in Design
Celebrate
the work of these extraordinary artists. Each with their own unique
background, they draw inspiration from their culture and surroundings to
create phenomenal designs.

City, Me, and My Dog
I come from China, where I
studied animation which was a memorable experience
for me and led me to find what I’m really passionate about. Now I’m studying art in the US. Currently, I
am an illustrator and a motion designer and create illustrations. I also
animate my drawings.
Jing De Zheng Expo
When I add movements to my drawings I feel it
gives them a new way to express themselves and enrich my art language.
Most of my drawings are hand-drawn because I love experimenting with
different mediums and collecting textures. Due to this, I always draw
elements separately, combine them later, and transfer them into
animated works.
The Empty Airport
Mooncake Package Design
I love surrealism, eastern calligraphy, and Chinese landscape painting. I
enjoy exploring the difference and common-ground elements between western and
eastern arts. One of my professors said to me: “Never give
yourself a boundary, do not limit yourself with the title. If you are
an animator you can also think about how to find the in-between with
other fields. Create new ideas by combing new visual languages.”My inspiration comes from everywhere, I design items for my clients and I also make art just for expressing myself.
John (Viet-Triet) Nguyen
Graphic designer John Nguyen takes on awareness issues with the help of design. He encourages others to make better actions through his work.

What A Wonderful World II
I am a graphic designer from Southern California, USA. I come from a
Vietnamese family and I am a
marathon finisher (Los Angeles Marathon 2017). I am part of MenAlive,
the Orange County Gay Mens chorus. I enjoy lemon printed fabric and the
manatee is my favorite animal. One TV show that changed my life is HBO’s
“6 feet Under.”
Gruesome Playground Injuries
I like to create art that has fun, playful and colorful vibes that
encourage the world to think positive and focus on the joys of life.
My work has always been inspired by human rights and big or small
actions that make the world a better and more positive place. With art such as this, I hope to motivate people to
achieve greatness with the help of a companion or two and also remind
people that there is strength in numbers.
My Abilities Outweigh My Disabilities
Band Together: Pride
Also, I want to mention “My
Abilities Outweigh my Disabilities” artwork I created as a way to bring
awareness for people with disabilities and that they too can have the
chance at thriving in life.
I am
inspired by leaders and individuals like Harvey Milk and Gandhi who
believe in immediate, bold action to change the world. I created “Band
Together: Pride” to bring awareness to the LGBTQ+ community and the need
for equality.
Lidia Tomashevskaya
Next, we’ll walk into the magical and surreal world of artist Lidia Tomashevskaya. Formally trained in design, she creates work inspired by various types of folk art and cultures.

Illustration
I am a Russian born, self-taught Israeli illustrator.
My work is mostly about the human soul and about mental health feelings.
Portrait
Sometimes, I use animal images as symbols–birds as freedom, the wolf as depression and anxiety, and the fox as the soul.

I want to create thoughtful and honest work which I would be truly proud of. I love such artists as Reka Bucsi, Akira Kusaka and Mar Hernandez.
Komal S Pahwa
Our last artist is Komal S Pahwa from India. Inspired by her culture and the cubist art movement, she makes colorful illustrations that are beautiful and emotive.

Bus Advertising – Character Design
I started as a computer
engineer but was fascinated by different graphic styles of art in my undergrad. I am
about to graduate with an MFA in illustration from SCAD. I work a lot
with shapes. I have always wanted to work like that and have finally
found myself comfortable with what I do.
Book Illustration: Breadwinner
My inspiration comes from what I have always loved doing as a child. I am a
dancer and have been dancing since the age of five. My art has a lot of
color and motion. I love color and all that is inspired by my country
India.I also love the cubist art style. Especially how shapes define an
illustration. I have always loved Picasso and thereafter wanted to work
with shapes.
Social Awareness Poster Design
LA Promotional Poster Design
Recently, I was introduced to contemporary artists like Riccardo Guasco,
Sean Loose and Rafael Mayani. These artists interact with shapes
in a lot of different ways. And I take my inspiration from these great
artists.
