I’ve mentioned a number of custom pull-to-refresh components most recently a component for cooking apps with a boiling pot animation along with a library simplifying the creation of your own pull-to-refresh components.
Here’s an open source component submitted by Michaël Azevedo that allows you to create a great looking custom refresh control with a neat gears animation, and also allows you to easily customize the animations called MAGearRefreshControl.
MAGearRefreshControl allows you to customize the look of gears shown on pull (color, size, number of teeth), and you can easily add gears with everything neatly animating when pulled.
