One of the most important aspects of a successful video game is the environment. The background is what sets the stage for the player, and knowing how to create great-looking backgrounds will improve your value as a designer.
In our new course, The Fundamentals of Background Art for Video Games, you’ll learn some basic game design concepts, and then put it all into practice by designing two tileable game backgrounds using Adobe Illustrator.
What You’ll Learn
Tuts+ instructor Gary Simon will take you through the basics of environment design and tiling backgrounds, as well as exploring the differences between vector and non-vector approaches.
Then he’ll show you how to use Adobe Illustrator to create two scrolling backgrounds for video games: one with a jungle design, and another with a haunted house image.
By the end of this course you’ll have created two different video game backgrounds, and will have learned some crucial skills to take your design work to the next level.
